47. i can take care of myself just fine

It’s not often that Ethan feels completely outmatched, but he has to admit that this time, it doesn’t look good for him.

“You sent out a distress call,” says the head asshole interrogating him. His voice is gratingly patient, but he’s still holding a corkscrew in his hand. Ethan doesn’t want to know what that’s for. “We just want to know who you work for, Mister - what was the name you gave us again?”

“Ansom.” Ethan flashes a smile. He’s still woozy - fuckers drugged him in a supermarket parking lot, of all places. Clearly he’s getting sloppy if they could tell he was tailing someone. He has to assume they work for the mob target he’s after; otherwise he’s the unfortunate victim of a completely random attack, and that’s too coincidental and insane to fathom. “And I don’t work for anyone.”

Corkscrew guy holds up Ethan’s car keys. There’s a key and a fob, a gym card, and a small, sleek cylinder. It’d taken some doing to press the right button with his hands tied behind a chair, but the guy is right: it’s a distress signal. “So you just have this for fun?”

Ethan coughs. His ribs hurt. Better not think too much about that just yet. “Everyone’s gotta have fun sometimes, right?”

Corkscrew guy opens his mouth to answer, but before he can there’s a crash from the hallway. He frowns. “What was that?”

“I have to assume someone tripped and fell,” Ethan said placidly. There’s another heavy thud, and a couple of choked-off shouts. “Hard.”

“Is this a game to you?”

“Never a game.” Ethan tilts his head, sizing the guy up. “I might enjoy this next part.”

“What ne,” the guy says, which is as far as he gets before there’s a loud, resounding thud and he keels over.

“He seems charming,” Ilsa says dryly, and drops the length of pipe that she’s holding. “You rang?”

“I did.” Ethan looks her up and down critically. She doesn’t look like she’s exerted herself all that much. “Are these guys amateurs?”

“Yes,” she says tartly. “You should really be embarrassed.”

“When am I not?”

Ilsa huffs and takes a couple steps closer. She’s going to untie his hands, probably, but when she steps into the light Ethan frowns. There’s a spot high on her cheekbone that’s swelling up. “What happened to your eye?”

She gives him an incredulous look. “My face just does this sometimes,” she says, cuttingly sarcastic. “What do you think? One of them got in a good hit.”

“We should get you ice,” Ethan says. It’s a little nonsensical. Goddamn drugs. “We don’t - what if it’s permanent?”

Ilsa’s eyebrows shoot up. “Did they drug you?”

“Yeah.” Ethan tips his head back to look at the ceiling. “I can probably still help you fight your way out of here.”

Ilsa shakes her head and goes to take care of the ropes. “I can take care of myself just fine, thank you very much.”

“What if I want to fight for your honor?”

“Then you should consider waiting until you can walk without falling over.”

Ethan considers this. It seems like a good point. “Fine,” he says reluctantly. “But I want that pipe. If I’m going to trip and fall, I’m going to fall swinging.”

“You’re truly an inspiration,” Ilsa says, breath warm against the back of his neck. But Ethan can hear the smile in it, the relief in it. “Let’s get you out of here, come on.”

☕️ + aussie tv shows.

i don’t know when you sent this but i know it was a long time ago and unfortunately, that means i have no idea what the coffee cup refers to. 

I LOVE AUSSIE TV SHOWS :))  absolutely love them!!! especially the ones on abc & sbs as they are usually my favourites but, i try and watch and support all of them, whether they are shows i like or not (unless they are incredibly problematic in a YIKES! kind of way then i don’t...). 

unfortunately and this is a BIG issue with aussie shows... THEY ARE TOO WHITE CENTRIC!!!! you either get a whole white cast without a single person of colour or you get a whole white cast with maybe one or two people of colour. it’s like they don’t even try and you end seeing the same white actors in almost every show (there are like 5 actors at the moment you can guarantee are going to be cast in EVERYTHING) and 9/10 there is zero reason why that actor or any white actor are even needed to play that character. IT SUCKS! and is a major turn off and so many shows that have come out this year and last year... they still push a 98% white cast. of course this isn’t always the case and there are shows that are led by indigenous actors with a predominate indigenous cast (some of my favourites) or are very diverse (the heights have aboriginal actors, asian actors, middle eastern actors etc.) but it’s just unfortunate that there aren’t more shows like this.

OOH good question. fun aside: i have this giant playlist on spotify and whenever i hear songs i like i add them to that, and i have been trying in earnest for the first time to get some things off of that, so i’ve been discovering lots of new stuff. with that in mind, in no particular order:
