Like every other Wednesday since you started dating Hyungwon, you’re heading to meet him at the cafe where you had your first date. And now you both meet up there before walking around a bit before heading to one of your homes and watching movies together. You get outside the cafe entrance to see him walking out with your two coffees in his hands. He smiles as he hands you yours, “I got you your favorite~” You grin and thank him before sipping on it. He wraps his arm around your shoulder, “So, how’s my baby been?” You smile, “I’ve been okay.” He pouts, “Just okay?” You sigh, “Do you remember that debut I told you about before?” “Of course I do. What about it?” “They’ve raised my rate by another twenty, and I was going to use that extra money to buy some records. And you’d think I’d already have paid it off by now, but the interest rates have been so high.” He lets out an “Oh,” and you look over at him, and he says, “I’ve dealt with horrible lenders before. It’s hard to hear you going through the same thing.” You shrug, “I suppose it’s okay, it’s just twenty bucks. Maybe by my next bill, I’ll have it paid off!” He smiles and clicks your coffee cups together, “Heck yeah!”

You smile, “So, how has your business been going?” He hums, “We have more money coming in now, and that’s nice.” You agree, and he leads you to a park bench, “Why do we always seem to end up at this bench?” He gives you an eye smile, “You know why.” You laugh, “It’s where we met.” He removes his arm around your shoulder to hold your hand in his. You lay your head against his shoulder, and he leans his head on top of yours. You chat quietly, taking in the early afternoon air. His phone rings, and he parts from you, “Do you mind if I take this?” You shake your head no, and he gets up from the bench and discusses in hushed whispers.

You wait for him to return, and he has a small pout playing on his face, “I have to go…” You pout back and go, “No, it’s our only day together until our date next week on Saturday…” He nods, and you get up from your seat. And he goes, “They really need me there. But I promise I’ll make it up to you.” You cross your arms over your chest, and in a faux stern voice, you say, “You better.” He laughs and kisses your forehead. You hold up your pinky and lock them, and he presses your thumbs together. “I promise.” You kiss his nose, “I know you will. I love you.” You let go of your hold. And he pulls you into a tight hug, “I’ll see you later.” You smile as you hug him tightly back, “You will.” And with that, you part ways, much too early for your liking, but you shrug when duty calls you must attend.

When you sat in your debt collector’s office the following day, pulling out the cash to pay him, he told you, “Your loan is paid in full. You don’t owe me anything this month or after.” You couldn’t believe your ears, “What?” He shrugs and goes, “Actually, I owe you some back pay.” You blink at him, trying to process it, “Huh?” And he pulls out a small yellow envelope, “Yeah, you’ve paid over a grand more than you owe.” He must be out of his mind! He just raised the rate last week! You scowl, “You’ve got to be kidding me.” He shakes his head, “I wouldn’t.” You shake your head, “No. Tell me what the catch is.” “There is none.” You glare, “Let me talk to your boss.” His eyes get big, “No one ever talks to him.” You shrug, “Well, I’m not just anyone. I want to know why you’re forgiving my loan.”

He sighs, giving up, “Okay, but I warn you, he didn’t give me an explanation either.” You look at him, baffled, “What do you mean?” He shrugs, “He walked past me, looked at my records, and recounted them. He threw out your file and told me that your loans were forgiven. Then he gave me a thousand to give back to you.” You huff, “That doesn't make any sense.” He sighs, “You and me both.” “Can I please speak with your boss?” “I guess.” He has you follow him through the several-story building. As you approach the top floor, he says, “I’ll warn you again. He won’t tell you.” You sigh, “Well, I at least have to try.”

He opens the door to the seventh floor, walks over to the entrance of the penthouse office, and knocks. You hear a loud voice boom, “What do you want?” Your debt collector’s voice is weak as he says, “Someone is asking you to explain why you forgave their loans.” A gruff voice says, “Come in.” Your loan shark goes in and gestures for you to follow him. The person is holding a newspaper with their legs kicked up on the desk without a care. He puts his newspaper down, and that’s when you see him. He’s wearing a long leather jacket, with leather pants and steel-tipped boots. He must have yelled at the guy to “Get out” because your collector is scampering out past you. But all you can see is that your once soft and sweet boyfriend is now your debt collector’s cruel and rash boss.

In a blur, he’s up from his chair and standing before you, tucking your hair behind your ear, “How did you get here, dear?” You want to be angry. You want to be livid. But you're at a loss for words. How is your sweetheart a loan shark boss? He never specified his business, but this is what he does? He waits for you to gather your thoughts, and you ask, “Why didn’t you tell me?” He gives you a tight-lipped smile, “This isn’t the type of secret you tell someone you wish to keep safe.” You sigh, you find that so sweet and kind. Just like the Hyungwon you’ve always known. But he’s different? He has a commanding air around him now. And if looks could kill, your debt collector would have been dead. Yet here he is, trying to protect you from his truth to keep you safe.

He waits for you to say something, searching your eyes for questions so he can answer them. With another minute of staring into each other’s eyes. He asks, “Would you like me to explain it over coffee?” And you ask quietly, “Will you explain everything?” He nods, “Everything you wish to know.” He looks over at his coffee pot, “Would you like to do it here or at our place?” You look around the room. It feels suffocating, “Our place.” He puts his hand out to you, and you carefully take it, wondering how this is your man. As you reach the main door, the rain starts pitter-pattering as your heart has since entering his building.

He grabs an umbrella from a stand, and outside the door, he opens it, shielding you both from the rain. “So um, are my loans really forgiven?” He nods, “Yeah.” You ask, “And the grand?” “Backpay, you were right. You've already paid off your loan. He was making a profit off of you.” “Is that why your business has been so great?” He laughs, “No,” and nudges you as he says, “Well… Maybe a little.” You shake your head at him, “Have your ‘lenders’ forgiven other loans?” He nods, “Yeah.”

He opens the door to the cafe and shuts his umbrella. You hear a bubbly voice go, “You two are never here on a Friday. What a pleasant surprise!” Minhyuk smiles as he goes, “Usual?” You nod with a small smile, and Hyungwon says, “Bring them over to us. I’ll pay later.” He nods, and you head to a booth in the back. “Are you sure you want to know more?” You nod, “I want you to explain everything.” Minhyuk comes over with your coffee. Hyungwon says something softly to him, and he quickly exits, changing the open sign to closed.

“Is he a part of this operation, too?” He nods, “A different faction. He just does this job for fun. He’s really a florist. But we’re on the same sort of team.” You sigh, “Damn, even our coffee guy.” He laughs, “You don’t seem to be taking it as hard now?” You shrug, “Well, honestly, I’m not sure how to take it. My soft sweetheart is a hardened criminal.” He rubs the back of his neck, “Yeah…” You put your hand over his hand that’s resting on the table. “I have no reason to fear, right?” He shakes his head, “I’ll never put you in harm’s way.”

You nod, and after a pause, “So, are you really a mafia boss?” He laughs, “In my faction, yeah, but there is someone above me. He’s a good guy, though.” You hum and ask, “I was wondering… Is it common for you to profit from people’s loans?” He grimaces, “Yeah… But I usually catch the loans when their time is up.” You tilt your head, “Why didn't you catch mine?” He drinks a sip of his coffee before brushing a hand through his hair, “I’ve been more focused on being with you than checking on the little details.”

You shake your head, smiling at him, “So, did you evaluate everyone’s?” He wrinkles his nose, “Not yet.” You sigh, “Won…” He pouts, “It’s partially on you.” You cross your arms over your chest, “But it’s because of me that you remembered a part of your job.” He sighs, “You have me there.” You ask, “Shouldn’t you be doing monthly checks?” He nods, “It’s actually bi-weekly checks because of how many we have, so it’s easier to spread them out across the month.” “And what day did you usually do these?” He averts his eyes, “Wednesdays.” You shake your head at him and tease, “Ditching your duties to be with little ole me, huh?” He laughs, “Exactly, I’d much rather be with you than in that stuffy room.” You nod, “Me too.” He smiles and flips his hand over to hold your hand in his.

You sigh, “I didn’t expect to see you today…” He laughs, “Same here. I didn’t want you to find out like this.” You squeeze his hand after sipping your coffee, “It’s okay. It’s better than finding out when your guns are blazing.” He laughs, “Yeah, I guess so.” You fiddle with his fingers, and he asks, “Are you still okay with dating me?” You squeeze his hands, “Yeah. You’re different from what I expected, but I’m content with that.” He brings his lips to the top of your hand, “I’m glad I love you.” You smile, flip your hands, and kiss his hand, “I love you too.”

You sip on your coffee for a while. Just taking it all in before a question pops into your head, “So when will I get to meet the rest of your crew?” He sighs, “I knew you were gonna ask that.” You wait, and he goes, “Whenever you wish, my dear.” You smile, “Okay~” He looks over at the clock in the building, “Technically, it’s quitting time now. Would you like to make up for yesterday?” You smile, “I thought you’d never ask.”

You leave after paying and waving goodbye to Minhyuk, who yells to Hyungwon, “You better flip the sign over!” Hyungwon laughs and does as asked before heading to your place to finish your belated date.

Date night with Kevin Moon 🌙

- impromptu date but Kevin suggests getting all dressed up to go see a play or check out a new art gallery in town

- he looks breathtaking in a dark turtleneck, blazer and fitted dress pants, and he wiggles his eyebrows at your outfit too, topping it off with a wolf-whistle and cheeky wink

- loops his arm through yours, opening the doors for you, bowing slightly with a fake posh accent "Shall we, my darling?"

- at the gallery, you might not know much about art as he does, but you love the way his face lights up and he starts speaking even faster when he sees artworks that he likes, asking you about your interpretations and thoughts too

- you could stand there and watch him go on and on with that sparkle in his eyes but he tugs you along excitedly hand in hand, like a puppy on a leash to check out all the works in the gallery

- afterwords you take a nice long walk down the cold streets, going wherever your feet take you

- his hands never leave yours, absentmindedly rubbing your hands to keep you warm. sometimes he'll bring your hands up so he can blow hot air on them

- his cheeks and nose will turn red from the cold and he looks absolutely adorable when he scrunches his nose laughing at your jokes and conversation

- you end up eating at some dingy fast food place, getting curious stares from some people because you're both dressed so fancily at such a casual place

- you end off the night with playful, giggly sex with lots of kisses and biting, fancy clothes strewn across the bedroom floor

- you lay there in comfortable silence, hand in hand again, staring up at the ceiling trying to catch your breaths

- until Kev breaks the silence with yet another random train of thought and you lean in to kiss him breathless

- he grins giddily at you, pulling you close to cuddle the night away

This was the photo I took the morning of your funeral. I was so...numb. I felt dead inside. I haven’t cried since that day. Seeing your urin with your photo was such a slap in the face. It made it so real and I’m still struggling to accept that it’s true.

It was beautiful Alex. The speech Seanie gave was so full of love. He talked about you guys growing up and I can see it all perfectly. From you guys playing basketball to running around the yard. Dylan and Marissa also gave amazing speeches. You have touched everyone that was in that church.

When we arrived at the cemetery, the father asked if anyone would like to speak. I raised my hand and stood in front of everyone. I talked about how we basically spent our lives growing up together. How you are still with us, even if not physically. I stated we need to remember you as the ray of sunshine that you are. Aunt Kebbie busted into tears.

Getting Steph to walk to your urin was the hardest thing I’ve ever had to do. All she did was sob as I tried to hold it together for her. She hugged me so tight after, saying how much she loved me. I think it scared her; the thought of losing me like seanie lost you.

It’s still not real, Alex. It’s been almost a month since we found out. I go through my days when randomly it will pop in my head that you aren’t here anymore. Did you know that on the 16th, it’ll be a year since I’ve seen you. It doesn’t seem logical that it’s been a year.

I found a song that is helping me cope in a way. There are these two lines:

•I’ll lace up my armor and fight for us both; Finish what you started and crown your stone.•

These words are pushing me to accomplish my end goal in honor of you. I refuse to give up. I will make you proud Alex. With everything in my being. I wear the bracelet in memory of you everyday; a reminder that life is short and to make it sweet.

The gods as dads head-canons Part 2

Balder

- Upon being told:

- He’s so ecstatic that he can't help but keep tripping over himself, more than usual.

- They a daughter named Nora.

- Balder's mother, Frigg, is the midwife for Nora's birth and is technically got to hold first before any of her parents.

- Nora is just as clumsy as her father. (Imagine her as a toddler learning to walk w/ Balder is a sight to see)

- “Are you two okay?” Yui asks the two, lying faceplanted on the ground.

- Nora is loved and spoiled by everyone around her.

- Balder especially spoils her rotten. So much that she's sometimes prone to be not mindful of other people and can be a little selfish. Only Yui and Thor scold her on this.

Loki

Upon being told:

- They have triplets: Fenrir, Jormungandr, and Hela. (Yeah....this section might get a bit more serious)

- The very day that they're born, a seer tells Odin of new information regarding Ragnarok...

- Fenrir and Jormungandr are shapeshifters. Fenrir turns into a a wolf pup while Jormungandr turns into a baby snake. (Still scares Thor though).

- Loki teaches his kids all sorts of tricks and manipulations to pull. Fenrir is only one who actually takes after him in this regard, while Jormungandr choses not to prank while Hela is way too much a cinnamon roll to even think about it and but does tend to get pulled into one.

- Fenrir is a wildchild who spends his time either pranking or running around in the forest in wolf form. He's very fast. It comes in handy for escaping from an angry prank victim.

- "That's my boy!" A proud Loki yells from the side.

- Jormungandr is a very lazy but loves to swim in the ocean. He usually takes naps in the most random of places in snake form.

- Hela is very shy and takes after her mother in being mild-mannered. She's quite talented in magic and was born with immense potential for it. She's very attached to her mother.

- Because of their frost giant and human heritage, the triplets are primarily looked down upon by most of the other Norse gods

- Odin, Thor, Balder, Loki, and a select few are aware of the full prophecy regarding Ragnarok. Due to Balder and Thor insisting on their behalf, Odin decided to do nothing and observe (for now).

- Despite knowing that he may be the cause of his death, Thor is quite close to Jormungandr and is a mentor-figure to him. Thor dreads the fought of ever having to hurt him one day.

- Loki doesn't tell Yui. How could he ever begin to tell her that their children will bring the apocalypse?

- Loki's greatest fear is that his children will be taken away from him and knowing that, unlike him, Yui may never see them again.

Thor

Upon being told:

- Not that's he not happy but he kind of saw it coming and he's quite casual about it.

- But when his daughter is finally born, his stoic facade melts away.

- Tia, their daughter, is basically Arya Stark; wild, a tomboy, and loves to get dirty. (Much to Yui's chagrin).

- Likewise, Thor is very stoic but caring toward his daughter. He’s not too strict but he will lay down the law when necessary.

- Grandpa Odin laughs at her wild ways.

- Tia loves when Uncle Loki visits. Nobody is safe from them.

- “Loki, don’t be a bad influence on my daughter.”

- Imagine little' Tia riding on Thor's shoulders...

- "SO HIGH!"

- Tia loves the outdoors and wants to be a fighter like the Valkyries are.

Thoth

- "I have news. You're pregnant. Obviously."

- He's the God of Knowledge, he breaks the news to Yui and he's admittedly ecstatic.

- They have a daughter named Seshat, "female scribe." ( She’s an actual figure in mythology.)

- Thoth isn't outwardly affectionate but he does love his daughter a lot. He puts a heavy emphasis on her education.

- Seshat fervently studies under her father's tutelage and seeks his approval.

- Seshat is very intelligent like her father but thankfully she is patient and friendly like her mother.

- Seshat spends her free time reading and writing.

- She helps out at the House of Life, which basically the educational center of Ancient Egypt.

- Ra has taken note of Seshat's exemplary writing and her other skills.....

Anubis

- Upon being told:

“KABARA~!”

- Anubis likes to be near Yui’s pregnant belly. When he take his naps, he lies his head on Yui’s lap and cuddles around her belly.

- Thoth would be the one to guide them through the entire pregnancy.

- They have a son named Kebechet. ( Kebechet is originally a girl in mythology but I made them boy because there are more than enough girls. Besides, if Kamiaso can make Amaterasu a guy, so can I with Kebechet!)

- ‘Kebby’ is just as shy as his father and but loves to play hide and seek with his parents. ( Yui has a hard time when it’s her turn to seek, he and Anubis are too good at hiding.)

- Kebby speaks normal but he can understand his father.

- Kebby loves watching his dad make mummies.

Sorry for the wait... but I’m finally done. I’m not doing Akira and Melissa because, I don’t have a much of a feel for the former as I did Dionysus or Thor and for the latter ,.....I just can’t . Sorry, if you were hoping for them.

this ask has deadass been in my box for two years now um. holy fuck. its gonna be super long bc this is actually my excuse to force myself to figure out how this fucking story actually goes. youre my sacrificial lamb, babe <3

under the cut for toxic/abusive relationship themes | mostly stemming from not putting an end to toxic cycles and briefly refusing to believe it was an issue

so i had this old ass wip, right. it was called parisian lovers despite no one in the entire story being french whatsoever and it was basically a love story for a sexual relationship with danger turning into a genuine view into what happens when you dont. like check yourself before running headlong into what you think you want

ive since started readapting it to (surprise) swtor and an excuse to explore sith pureblood (henceforth referred to as "tsis") cultures surrounding whats considered normal in their dating/relationships, and also how it challenges familial relationships

the details of it are super fuzzy mostly bc all the meat of it was lost to twitter dms that i refuse to open. so heres a quick fast easy rundown

basically, youve got tsiksos. he is the third born and third son of an extremely powerful and wealthy union of bloodlines, and since hes really not the most important one, he decides he wants to study a niche theory of dark arts. something about how channeling power needed to cast sorcery can be amplified through vocals and choreography. basically he went to a contemporary dance school for the shadow wizard money gang

tsiksos meets ûtainoz, who is practically a beast in this school. he sees the valedictorian spot and hes steamrolling anyone he needs to. hes ruthless, hes heartless, hes a smooth-talker, he will do anything to get his way, and tsiksos found that hot and sexy and definitely worth falling in love with

predictably, this goes terribly. tsiksos doesnt know what the hell he walked into, only that he may as well enjoy it because hes sleeping with the hottest, most talented guy at this school. ûtainoz got a little too comfortable, though, and by the end of their tenure there lost his valedictorian spot to tsiksos,,, who was also gunning for it right under his nose

but whatever, its fine, they go their separate ways with the taste of one anothers venom permanently burned in each others mouths. they both fill their own niches. ûtainoz goes into more of a performative, traveling role and relies on his aesthetic rather than his power - whereas tsiksos followed through with his intent and deepened his connection to the dark arts through what he learned. he became something of a siren, honestly

anyway anyway anyway. tsiksos moves off of his homeworld. he decides he wants to actively burn fires through everywhere ûtainoz has been. and hes extremely successful. he wants to win, he needs to win, he will win. he meets utajhaiw while in the new city, and while poor utajhaiw falls in love - tsiksos sees someone he can keep close with him if he just uses all the right words.

which works! theyre together, its great, theyre fucking almost daily. but they argue every hour. to the point where it gets violent more often than not with tsiksos on the offensive. the arguments are largely fabricated or instigated out of boredom. but isnt it worth it for the sloppy nasty disgusting hateful makeup sex?

yeah well. the neighbors of their apartment dont think so. theyve nearly called the cops every time, until neighbor laishtzi comes over to investigate what just hit the wall. he gets pulled, literally, into the middle of their fuck. his partner rîshja follows and, likewise, gets pulled into the middle of their fuck. its like some sort of apology thing for them too and it becomes regular.

enter: their friend nunjor, a lawyer (i think. something like that) who also ! gets pulled into the sex life. whats worse is that both tsiksos and utajhaiw both fell in love with nunjor and wanted to have him as a permanent third.

sometime after this, the whole hatefucking thing gets a little too hateful. tsiksos actually genuinely nearly kills utajhaiw, and hes starting to hide the knives in earnest. nunjor suggests that they attend actual couples' things instead of just their joint performances where utajhaiw plays and tsiksos conjures something.

they try it. they enjoy it. their relationship actually improves. they make a vase together in a ceramics class.

by the way, utajhaiw has asthma. tsiksos has been stressing him out so bad hes started smoking. on purpose. yes it is what you think it is and tsiksos thinks its hot because he wants to shotgun the smoke from his mouth

anyway, something happens and tsiksos starts backsliding. they have another argument and he breaks their ceramic vase. all that dust from the glaze and the clay triggers a pretty bad asthma attack, bad enough that the neighbors come over (it had been so long without an incident) and call the paramedics to come get him. utajhaiw actually snaps at tsiksos in the middle of literally coughing himself to death, and this is uh. a little traumatizing. because its never been this bad before.

utajhaiw makes it to the hospital fine, refuses to see tsiksos, and nunjor is on utajhaiw's side - that was fucking uncalled for, dude. tsiksos goes back to their apartment, alone for the first time since they bought it together. naturally he should not be alone at this time

laishtzi phones a friend, kaqur (psychiatrist-adjacent) and his partner jashru (probably a psychologist, if not professional "wtf is wrong with you, stop that"). they agree to take tsiksos in while utajhaiw is back home with his family.

its about a year i think? that tsiksos stays with them, basically on s-watch, and it turns out he has a really severe derealization + depersonalization whammy going on, spurned from still dressing the way ûtainoz liked him to dress and the way other people wanted to see his body. he punched through a mirror. so once he started dressing in looser, more comfortable clothing - surprise! he felt better!!!

(meanwhile, utajhaiw spent a year at home strengthening his lungs again, writing songs and poetry, and reconsidering his entire life. spoiler alert: he actually was in love with tsiksos)

but things are never easy. at some point, tsiksos has a bit of a meltdown and breaks out of his little prison, steals the spare key to his apartment, and ends up burrowing in the bed wearing utajhaiws clothes and sleeping on his side of the bed because he feels so fucking bad about what he did to him. but uhhhhhhh.

apparently nunjor also decided to pay a visit that night. and tsiksos, in some nightmare-sleep-haze, reacts to nunjor trying to wake him as if he were ûtainoz - meaning he tried to apologize through offering his body. rubbing his hands on his thighs, face in his crotch (since nunjor was standing at the side of the bed). when nunjor gently corrected him and woke him (not that he would have been upset at the idea of fucking him again, buth he didnt seem to be in the right headspace) it actually uhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh sent tsiksos into a worse panic. scrambling out of the bed. tripping on something. breaking a glass.

oh, hello ptsd - it sure is nice crab-scrambling backwards on your hands and bare feet over glass while hyperventilating and sobbing so hard you genuinely cant see. again, laishti and rîshja to the rescue getting him back to kaqur and jashru.

so heres where the fun happens. ûtainoz comes back. hes genuinely changed for the better, he is apologetic. he wants to make it up to the person he hurt the worst. does tsiksos take him up on that? yes. should he have? yes, actually, because he needed the closure.

they start rekindling what little flame they had together. days turn into weeks, months, and theyre getting along just fine. apparently nunjor had left, and tsiksos had no comm - by the time tsiksos noticed, it was uh. almost a little too late.

theres a time where tsiksos and ûtainoz are in a speeder together and ohhhh nunjor is a poet, its in his full name, but he also composes. he sings. and he sings about how badly someone has just lifted him higher than ever before dropping him down into nothing. tsiksos has a breakdown on the lawn of some random recreational park.

things will get better again, though! somewhere along the way, tsiksos and ûtainoz make peace with who they are and who they were. nunjor comes back and he and tsiksos talk it out. they forgive each other. and then tsiksos and utajhaiw reunite. they explain a lot. they forgive each other.

tsiksos/utajhaiw/nunjor throuple endgame is the only thing that matters to me actually.

Tedeschi Trucks Band at Chicago Theater January 27, 2018

My wife and I had another amazing evening seeing Tedeschi Trucks band live at the beautiful Chicago Theatre. This is the second time we saw them in the past year (almost exactly a year later), and the third time seeing them for me. (Rochester, NY in October 2011 was the first). They put on such a wonderful live show with their jam based repertoire of Rock, Blues, R&B, Gospel and Jazz. They have a 12 piece band including Derek (guitar and slide guitar), Susan (guitar and lead vocals), bass, keyboards, two drummers, a three-piece horn section (sax, trumpet and trombone) and three back up singers. Mike Mattison also spends some time as lead singer. Derek Trucks is just a phenomenal guitar player, one of the best in the business. Susan Tedeschi provides the powerful lead vocals with an incredible set of pipes. She is no slouch on guitar herself, and I always wish she would get the opportunity to solo just a bit more than she does during the shows. Some of the show’s highlights for me were the opening song Don’t Let Me Slide, Anyday, the Derek And The Dominoes cover with lead vocals by Susan and Mike sharing lead vocals; Don’t Miss Me, the Derek Trucks Band song that included a frantic extended improvisational saxophone solo by Kebbi Williams and then smoothly transitioned into the beautiful Midnight In Harlem; the Allman Brothers Band song Whipping Post, and Kofi Burbridge (piano) accompanying Susan on a solo of the Leon Russell tune, A Song For You, and closing the show with the uplifting Bound For Glory. We had great seats, on the main floor, a bit left-of-center, 19th row. I could not see what was happening in the balcony, but fortunately, everyone on the main floor stood for the entire show so we could dance and move to the music. It was the third and last night for TTB at the Chicago Theatre. They are a band I will continue to see as often as possible. Prior to the show, we had an excellent dinner at the Swedish restaurant Tre Kronor in Chicago’s North Park neighborhood. All in all, a great way to spend a January Saturday night in Chicago.

You’re leaving work after a boring shift when you hear your phone ring; you dig it out from the depths of your pockets and see it’s Changgu. Your best friend, who you have slight feelings for, you excitedly answer, “Hey, Changgu! What’s up?” You can almost hear his grin as he goes, “Us right now!” You roll your eyes as he continues, “I was wondering if you’d like to watch the Christmas tree lighting with me?” You grin, “Yeah, I would love to!” He goes, “Alright, I’ll pick you up in an hour, okay?” You nod before realizing he couldn’t see you, “Okay, that works for me! See you later, Ggu!” “See you later, (N/n)!” And with that, he hangs up, and you make it the rest of the way home.

You change out of your work clothes and into something warm and cozy. Before relaxing in front of the TV, the Christmas specials serving as background noise to your phone scrolling. You catch the time and see it’s about to turn to the next hour and pull on your winter coat and shoes. As you hear your front door ring, you grin, “One second!” You hear his muffled agreement before you walk out of the door and see him and ask, “Are you ready to see the tree all lit up?” He grins, “I am! Are you?” You nod happily and follow him out to his car.

He holds the door open for you, all gentlemanly-like, and you shake your head with a smile before sitting in the seat. You click your seatbelt in as he shuts your door, you smirk and reach over and pop his door open, and he shakes his head as you push it out. He catches the door with a sigh and slides into his seat as you slide back into yours. He clicks his seatbelt on before turning over the car and turning on the heat. You immediately put your hands on the vents to warm them up. His music softly plays through the speakers, and you can’t help but feel more at peace as you watch him drive.

Within less than fifteen minutes, you guys arrive and find a parking spot, “Oh, look, the crowd is starting to gather now!” You say with excitement as he reverses into a parallel space and pulls in. “Oh wow, look at how huge the tree is!” He cheers, filled with excitement too. You grin before getting out of the car and waiting for him on the sidewalk, “Let’s find a nice spot to view it!” He nods, and you two walk beside each other. And you ask, “So, anything exciting at work or home?” He hums, “It’s been peaceful, almost too peaceful…” You grin, “Do you think someone is up to something, then?” He shakes his head, “Yes, but no. Shinwon is always up to something, so that’s nothing new. But the others? They’re hiding presents from each other. So, it's leading to more sneaking around and suspicion. It's amusing to see their prying eyes every time someone comes home.” You nod, “Oh~ Where are you hiding yours then?” He grins, “My car. I sleep with my keys for a reason.” You shake your head at him, “Weird but not out of a reason.” He laughs, “What about you?” You shrug, “It’s been boring with the holidays right around the corner. Everything has come to a lull, it seems.” He nods, “But that’s nice, though. Isn’t it?” You smile, “Only if there is something fun to do afterward.” He smiles, “Does this count?” You grin, “Absolutely!” He nods, and you guys spot a place on the side where you can see the tree without being blocked by others and quickly head over to it.

He looks down at his watch, “Twenty minutes until the lights come on!” The two of you sway to the carolers singing in front of the tree and softly sing along. When it’s five minutes til the carolers clear out and join the crowd. And everyone gathers in closer to watch the lights, and to keep you close, Changgu places his hand on your waist, “You okay?” You nod, “You?” He nods as everyone grows silent and begins to brim with anticipation.

When the first stage, the lowest branches on the tree light up, everyone ‘oohs’ and ‘aahs’. And the lights continue turning on until it reaches the very top. The golden star glows brightly and shines so beautifully in the night. You gasp as cheers break out in the crowd and turn towards Changgu, “Woah! Isn’t that the brightest thing you’ve ever seen?!” And he shakes his head with a soft smile, “Christmas lights can’t compare to how bright you shine.” If your cheeks weren’t already red from the cold, they certainly were now. You gasp and look down at your shoes before telling him a small thank you, “I mean it. I think your beauty shines inside and out. You make me so happy.” He pauses momentarily, staring into your eyes, “I was wondering if you would want to be mine?” You hold his stare, and without skipping a beat, you say, “Yes, of course. I’d love to be yours if you would be mine as well.” He grins, lifts your chin with his mitted hand, and kisses you softly, and you wrap your arms around his neck.

You pull back for a minute and stare into his eyes before pulling him into another kiss, and he dips you back a bit. You grin as you hold onto him tighter, and when the two of you pull away, you giggle, “I can’t believe this is real.” You tell him softly, and he agrees, “I’m so glad it is.” You can’t help but laugh harder and kiss his cheek, “Do you want to get some warm apple cider?” He grins and sees the stand not far from where you two stand, “I’d love to.”

You carefully reach out your mitted hands for his, and he happily wraps his hand around yours. You swing your arms together as you wait in line. You ask him, “When did you know you liked me more than a friend?” He smiles, “I think I noticed I liked you last Christmas when you snuck us both a cookie from Hongseok’s freshly baked sheet. And you gave me a cute cheeky wink before we both had to hide from him.” He shakes his head with a laugh before continuing, “I think I always knew I liked you, but I didn’t realize it until then. When did you notice?” You think for a few minutes, maybe it was when he kissed your cheek on New Year's Eve, or maybe, it was the Halloween before that. Where you two wore peanut butter and jelly couple costumes that you realized you had more than friendly feelings for him. “I realized I had more than platonic feelings for you last year on Halloween, but I think it really hit me when you kissed my cheek when the clock turned twelve this year.” You smile as you see his cheeks turn red, and he scratches the back of his neck, “You remember that?” You nod, “I don’t think I could ever forget it. Maybe this time, you can do it for real?” He grins, and you pay for the warm cider and walk back to his car, mitten in mitten. And glasses in the other, enjoying your first evening as a couple.

Tedeschi Trucks Band made their way back to Tulsa’s Brady Theater this past Tuesday night for yet another magical evening. Seemingly always touring, this year the Jacksonville based band is supporting their fourth studio release, “Signs” (see our album review here: https://americanahighways.org/2019/02/22/review-tedeschi-trucks-signs/). The past couple of years have certainly been tough for the band, fraught with losses of close friends, peers and a key member, Kofi Burbridge. Also, there was the departure of an original member (bassist Tim Lefebvre and the subsequent line-up change. Still, they soldier on, and in doing so, they seem to get better and better in spite of, or perhaps as a result of, all the tribulations. I’ve said it many times before; I think Tedeschi Trucks Band is the best band playing on any given night.

This evening was no different, and there was no place I’d have rather been. Tedeschi Trucks Band will change it up time to time, playing one lengthy set while using a supporting band to open shows, but other times performing two sets in “an evening with” format. Tonight was the former, and despite the shorter show, they undoubtedly gave the Tulsa audience their money’s worth. This just might have been my favorite performance of all the band’s shows I’ve seen. Over the course of the next two hours, the band introduced the Tulsa audience to songs from their new album playing “Signs, High Times”, “When Will I Begin”, and “Shame”. For those that aren’t familiar with TTB, it’s a large band; a musical ensemble if you will, of incredibly talented musicians. The band consists of, Susan Tedeschi (Guitar, Lead Vocals), Derek Trucks (Lead Guitar) Mike Mattison (Vocals, acoustic guitar), Mark Rivers (Vocals), Alecia Chakour (Vocals), Kebbi Williams (Saxophone) Ephraim Owens (Trumpet), Elizabeth Lee (Trombone), Tyler Greenwell and J.J. Johnson (Drums) and newest additions Gabe Dixon (Keyboards) and Brandon Boone (Bass).

Even with all of that talent occupying the stage, when Susan Tedeschi steps up to the microphone, she immediately captures your attention. When she sings, she owns that stage and proceeds to break your heart, or fill it with joy via her powerful vocal presence. Such was the case as with the evening’s versions of “Learn How To Love” and Dylan’s “Don’t Think Twice, It’s All Right” and the jaw dropping cover of Elton John’s “Border Song”. All highlights for sure, but the real stand-out of the night was the inspired Beatles/Derek and the Domino’s duo of “I’ve Got A Feeling” and “Keep On Growing.” It was one of those moments that you’ll tell people about over and over.

I don’t know how they do it, and I’m not even sure they’re consciously aware that they’re doing it. But somehow, some way, Tedeschi Trucks Band has an inherent talent, a process or a method in which they tap into that mystical “X” factor or “the zone”.You may have heard those terms associated with bands before, most commonly mentioned with “jam” bands or improvisational genres such as jazz, or even blues. It’s probably most noticeably associated with the Grateful Dead, and it references a band’s ability to “feel” the music, to connect within the music with each member’s individual contributions enhancing the overall sonic excursion. Perhaps it’s a rhythm, or individual notes or even a musical tease of another song. Somehow it all ends up coming together like a single musical octopus determining the course of the moment’s journey. To be sure, it’s not always happening. The majority of Tedeschi Trucks Band shows follow a pretty straightforward method. There’s a per-determined setlist, one supplied by a seemingly endless selection of classic and lesser known songs, that the band manages to reverently perform. But there are moments, where they step outside the known boundaries, and that’s where the magic happens for many of us.

If one was to give that aforementioned octopus a name, it would likely be Derek Trucks. It’s something special watching him lead and direct the band throughout the night. A head nod here, a glance or a small gesture there, the rest of the band looks to Trucks as he provides the musical path for them to follow each night. This Tuesday night in Tulsa was no different, and no matter how many times I’ve witnessed it, it’s still something incredibly special to experience.

Joining TTB on several dates this tour were a special young band called Southern Avenue who come out of Memphis and absolutely represent and honior the Memphis sound. Consisting of vocalist Tierinii Jackson, her sister Tikyra Jackson on drums, Ori Naftaly on guitar, Jeremy Powell on keys and Evan Sarver on bass.The band grabbed the attention of the Brady Theater audience early, and Tierinii’s energy proved contagious the remainder of the set. It’s fairly rare that I see an opening band command the attention of the audience the way Southern Avenue did, and that should speak volumes to their future trajectory. Southern Avenue blends soul, funk, gospel, blues and rock like a spicy gumbo that you can’t get enough of. The band has a current album, a self-titled release via the legendary Stax Records that’s available now.
