Impending Lunacy

I used to never believe in the whole idea that full moons make people crazy, but after 7 years of emergency management work, I can firmly say I’m a convert.  But is the upcoming total solar eclipse also having a similar effect?

Weird things keep happening.  Friday, when I went to get the mail, I thought I saw a small balloon in the back of the mailbox, behind the mail.  Whether from years of videogames or having similar calls at dispatch, my mind immediately went to it being a dead drop.  Y’know, people leaving a package of drugs behind, someone coming by & leaving money to be picked up later.  Now, I live about as close to the middle of nowhere as you can get while still getting cellphone reception -- & even that’s spotty -- so drugs aren’t that big a thing.  But we have had meth labs, & there was that one time police pinned a man at the end of our driveway addled on drugs & fleeing from a domestic, so anything’s possible.  But after some investigation, & dragging my mom down the quarter-mile driveway, we found it was just a pear.  Glad it wasn’t drugs, but why was there a pear in my mailbox?  I doubt the little sparrow making a nest in the unused newspaper slot dragged the thing up, not to mention there are no pear trees in the area.  Was it some weird secret admirer thing?  Did someone see me on my morning walks & think I might need a snack?  I don’t, by the way.

Then, Sunday, I was coming out of the mall after getting my new contacts & I see a man coming in dressed like Jason, from the Friday the 13th movies.  Not just wearing a regular hockey mask, but a proper Jason costume.  I mean, I know there’s a Hot Topic & all, but... And his friend coming in with him was dressed completely normally.  Just smiled at me when I said, “Hi.”  Because what was I supposed to say?  I know one of the stores had Fan-con thing with lots of people dressing up, but I think that was on Saturday.  Maybe it was on Sunday, too?  I haven’t seen anything on the news about anyone being arrested for trying to stab the place up, so I guess it was on the up-&-up.

It’s things like this that make my mom paranoid for me to be on my own, but I just look at it as having a good story to tell.  If I didn’t look at it that way, I’d lose my mind myself.
