I blame the Star Wars toxic fandom forcing the actors off social media for the fact that I always just assume that actors don't have accounts.
In other news, America Ferrera has an Instagram

i saw this post today where this person was talking abt fandom racism and was pointing out some real issues within my fandom and favorite ship that I too had noticed… but then kept bringing it back to the lack of one particular other ship they liked, when it's like, no that's not the problem, and that ship is unpopular because those characters have zero romantic or sexual chemistry and barely any scenes together. (it was really funny that someone had reblogged this to take their 'lack of seeing this one character in a sexual way in fic miiight be racist' complaint to be like 'i think you're right! we should have more fic about [a long list of different ships involving that character with people they have ACTUAL chemistry with].' it was really funny. ofc op totally missed the point they were making there.) anyway i just feel like way too many useful conversations about this stuff are ruined by people making it about shipping or other really subjective fandom preferences. i get that this is because something like 'number of fics X ship or character has on ao3' is an objective measure, and something like 'level of orientalism in how a lot of people are writing this desi character' is not, but i wish people would realize it tends to alienate more people that it converts. and ime, it's often the people who maybe would most benefit from hearing those criticisms (e.g. are writing unintentionally racist stuff in their works, and are someone who would want to know about that and how to do it differently) who tune it out the second you make it into insulting their shipping preferences.
i mean, there WAS some real racism in the star wars sequels fandom, including among the fanfic/shipping side. not just the shitty dudes harassing kelly marie tran. we saw the really bizarre 'predator' language people directed at john boyega just for making some joke posts on instagram about disliking reylo and its shippers. it was the very classic racist thing where people see something as automatically more threatening when a black man does it. ....but how many people had already tuned all that out because the people most outspoken about the racism in the fandom kept reducing it to 'if you ship reylo over finnrey, or kylux over finnpoe, you're a racist'? it's like a boy who cried wolf thing. if you've shown that you can't uncouple serious discussions and concerns from just being pissy that your otp is not more popular, people are going to see you as someone who can't be taken seriously and then ignore you when you do have a real complaint. it's like how i'm sure that some of stitch's essays are thoughtful and important, but i have no desire to read stuff by someone who is infamous for harassing people just for what they ship. i don't feel like i can take any of that person's judgments about fandoms i'm not in, for instance, seriously.
that's not to say fandom preferences in shipping can't ever be influenced by racism (or other 'isms') but is it ever really *that* specifically that is the problem, or the broader pattern it is part of? and i feel like 'maybe fandom is a little too focused on het and slash ships between two young skinny conventionally attractive white people' is a message more people are open to than 'your specific white M/M or F/M otp is racist'
anyway it reminds me of the stuff i've seen sometimes in academic fandom studies about how you can't really honestly study a fandom where you're deeply mired in its discourse - you need to focus your work on fandoms that you're familiar with but not in that way. and i think that maybe also applies to some of these discussions about fandom racism and misogyny. maybe you're just going to have better takes on something when you're not deeply invested in other unrelated arguments about it, like about which ship is the most popular. like i could not care less about star wars shipping and have zero take in reylo vs. finnrey, so that's why i feel like i could trust my perception that the way a small minority of reylos were posting about john boyega's instagram posts was racist. it didn't matter if he was genuinely being a jerk to them or about their ship. he obviously wasn't a 'predator' and it was pretty telling language for a group of largely white people to use about a black man making fun of their ship on a different social media site.
--
The laying pipe thing was blown so out of proportion, yes. Call it sexist, sure, but it wasn't fucking predatory.

Moses Ingram, who plays the inquisitor Reva Sevander, aka the third sister in Obi-wan Kenobi, just posted on her Instagram story about the racist, hateful messages she’s been getting in her DMs.
Mind you, we’re only two episodes in.
She doesn’t deserve this. Especially not from the fandom that is supposedly so “welcoming” and “loving.”
But this is the pattern we always see. Over and over again.
They did this with Ahmed Best, John Boyega and Kelly Marie Tran. They keep doing this.
Welcoming is a myth. I’m sick of it. I’m glad she’s exposing this, but Star Wars needs to do better calling this out. This shouldn’t be her responsibility.
They need to protect their actors of color. But it’s sad that I don’t expect them to.

i remember reading tweets and shit when obi-wan kenobi was still airing and among all the racist nonsense abt moses having the audacity to be black and a woman with a lightsaber in a star wars show, dudes were complaining abt how reva was just being a “whiny bitch” and going on to explain how it was acceptable and “reasonable” when anakin did it but NOT her.
fuck her trauma and anger! and going beyond that just BEGGING to see a black inquisitor woman humiliated? it was a mess. i felt for moses and reva.
I'm so glad I don't have Twitter/X and have stopped looking at reels on Instagram. These places are fostering so much hate.
The level of misogynoir we've been seeing from fanboys is disappointing, but unfortunately not surprising. They wanted a movie about Obi-Wan and Vader fighting. They hated the idea of a show from the get go and they've been trying to find every reason to complain about it since. I've seen them rage about Leia, about Luke seeing a lightsaber (nevermind that this was such a traumatic experience his mind probably wiped it all out after) and meeting Obi-Wan, about the Path, about the First Inquisitor's look (as if that kind of prosthetic could hold in action sequences), etc.
They hate any kind of diversity and inclusion because to them Star Wars is pretty coloured swords and starships and a cool villain in a mask. Unfortunately for them, the women who have been brought on recently to create new Star Wars cinematic content (not talking about KK here) seem to care more about good stories than the fan reaction.
I feel terrible for Moses (just like I felt terrible for Kelly Marie Tran, but that has as much to do with how the movies treated the character as how the fans treated the actress). I hope that won't stop Deborah Chow from coming back with more material for Reva (I'm not sure anybody else could give her character the story she deserves), or for the comics/novels creators from writing about her.
Reva deserves a whole show, a comics run and/or a novel dedicated to her. She's a force of nature, and her story shines light on one of the few things we still know so little of (at least in canon). The Inquisitors have been used a lot in the decades between the prequels and the original trilogy, but we don't get much information on their path to becoming Inquisitors. Reva not only gave us that, she was also morally gray. Her entire life is dedicated to getting revenge on the guy who's essentially her boss now. There's so much to explore there!
Anyways, sorry this got so long. I am very defensive of Reva/Moses and I hate the fanboys with a passion 😅 Thank you for the anon!

No, Star Wars fandom, you're not racist for disliking Reva. You're racist for sending hate mail and death threats to Moses Ingram filled with racial slurs.
You're racist for bullying Kelly Marie Tran off social media with hateful posts and death threats littered with racial slurs. You're racist for bullying Daisey Ridley off Instagram with racial slurs and death threats for posting a picture of herself just standing beside John Boyega. You're racist for sending John Boyega hate mail and death threats filed with racial slurs. You're racist for acting a damn fool because there was a Black Stormtrooper in the trailer for The Force Awakens.
Why else do you think major news networks have done major pieces about how racist Star Wars fandom is? Why else do you think Disney and Ewan McGregor had to go out of their way to tell people not to be racist to the actors?
No, you're not being called racist because you don't like Reva. You're being called racist for doing racist shit.
"But I didn't know!"
Now you do.
"But I'm not doing that!"
So raise your voice against those who do.

Moses Ingram | Instagram Stories
(Part 1)
Smh....🤦 The racism in this Star Wars fandom is unreal... smh 😔
It's so SAD that black actors like John Boyega and Moses Ingram have to go through hate like this. Even Asian actress Kelly Marie Tran was given a lot of hate after "The Last Jedi". When is enough enough? 🥴

The official Star Wars Instagram page posted this video of Ewan today and I am so glad that he is in her corner.
I watched her Instagram story this morning after seeing a few posts about it and the messages she shared and her reaction to them just churned my stomach.
There is no reason for this behavior. It's bad enough when people comment it on things, but to directly send it to her DMs is monstrous.
It was horrible when it happened to John Boyega. It was horrible when it happened to Kelly Marie Tran. It was horrible when something similar happened to Ahmed Best way back when the Prequels came out.
The treatment of these talented actors based on their race and because you don't like the FICTIONAL character they are playing needs to stop.

Star Wars Ethics and Platform Analysis
The Star Wars fandom has become known for being toxic, especially after the release of the sequel trilogy that began in 2015. After these movies were released, the main female protagonist, Daisy Ridley, very quickly began receiving hate and harassment online from male fans who thought her character was too powerful. When The Last Jedi came out, Kelly Marie Tran also began receiving mass amounts of harassment that had to do with her gender and her race. Harassing the actors, in general, is ridiculous, but harassing them for doing their job and playing a character they didn't create is insane. Both of these women were harassed to the point where they both deleted their Instagram accounts for years.
That being said, Instagram and specifically the comment section, became a very easy place to attack the actors and their comments sections were constantly filled with hateful words towards them and their characters. Instagram also has features such as tagging that can fill someones entire account with hateful messages. JUSTICE FOR THE STAR WARS ACTORS!

Ethics and Platform Analysis
The Star Wars fandom is very hostile when it comes to the franchise. With ongoing misogyny towards female actors and racism, Star Wars fans have been dubbed one of the worst fandoms ever. Jake Lloyd who played Anakin Skywalker in The Phantom Menace was bullied in school after the film came out. It became so bad that Lloyd burned all his Star Wars merchandise and has come to hate the franchise. Many fans have also made sexist remarks towards Daisy Ridley and Kelly Marie Tran due to fan's hatred of their characters. This resulted in Ridley and Tran deleting their Instagram accounts.
The platform(s) that are important in our analysis was mainly Instagram. When looking at the harassment of Ridley and Tran, we noticed that it mainly happened on this platform. Many people would post comments on their posts and would also tag them in pictures ridiculing them. Hate accounts are another thing that fans made to show their disdain for the actresses. This contributes to our analysis because these accounts are posting these things that will permanently be online for the world to see.

The ‘World of DC’ is really going through a shaky patch, at the moment, though the future looks hopeful. But the current scenario inside and outside the DC Entertainment and Warner Bros., is all about negativities, thanks to social media. The new case is of former DC Entertainment chief, Diane Nelson, who has deleted her Twitter account following a backlash from the fans on posts supporting the upcoming Joker movie, starring Joaquin Phoenix as the next clown prince of DC. Joker is the only project which has quickly gone into production since Walter Hamada became the new president of DC after Diane Nelson left in June, earlier this year. Nelson was also among those who were impressed by the official reveal of Joaquin Phoenix as Arthur Fleck aka Joker in his make-up photos, a few days ago. So, she wrote that she loved the look and praised the director’s vision (Phillip Todd), the talented actor (Joaquin Phoenix). And she also wrote that Joker movie’s what DC should have been doing after The Dark Knight trilogy of Chris Nolan, years ago. After this, many of the followers, being DC fans, took her post in a different perspective and thought that she was blaming Zack Snyder’s vision for the failure of earlier DCEU films-which isn’t true at all. So, to clarify things, she also responded to the hate comments by writing, that she really admires Zack Snyder the way she likes Christopher Nolan, as both of them have made memorable films. But the hate comments continued even after her trying to make sort out the complications. And then she blocked the comments from non-confirmed followers on her posts, the picture of which you can see, below. JOKER: Former DC chief Diane Nelson deletes Twitter account after angst from fans But later, her remarks about favoring Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker also made many DC fans and followers furious, which ultimately forced her to delete her account permanently. Many fans are not happy with Joaquin Phoenix as the new Joker. Well, the cases of big names in the industry deactivating their social media accounts have slightly increased. Before Diane Nelson, Star Wars: The Last Jedi’s Kelly Marie Tran deactivated her Instagram account, after being bullied and Stranger Things’ Millie Bobby Brown had also closed her Twitter account due to similar reasons. Most recently, before Diane Nelson, actress Ruby Rose also left Twitter after being bullied for being cast as the Batwoman for this year’s upcoming Arrowverse crossover. These things are very wrong for the entertainment industry as hatred and negative reactions from users have gone onto a totally different extension, which is dark and dangerous.
