Small Kitchen Ideas That Bring Form and Function Together

Every kitchen is the heart of the home - whether it's where you cook for your family or gather to entertain friends. From cozy seating nooks to clever storage hacks, these small kitchen ideas bring form and function together.

Matching cabinetry to the walls and backsplash creates a cohesive look that makes a room feel larger. Opt for a dark hue like burgundy to add mood and depth.

1. Remove the Upper Cabinetry

Wall-to-wall cabinetry can encroach on space and make small kitchen ideas feel cramped. To create a more open look, consider doing away with your upper cabinets. The key to making this work is introducing other storage solutions that allow you to keep your essentials close at hand.

For example, adding a hutch gives you a designated spot to store decorative accents and utensils that aren't used often. Alternatively, a slim pullout cabinet installed over the stove can hold cookware and kitchen spices for easy access.

If removing your upper cabinets isn't an option, paint the walls in a bright shade to instantly lighten up a small kitchen. Just be sure to select a color that works well with your current palette to avoid a clash.

2. Add a Hutch

If your small kitchen doesn't have room for a dedicated dining area, turn a cozy nook into a homey coffee bar. This design trick is especially useful if you live in a galley-style home, which can be difficult to fit a full dining room table into.

Display decorative items like pitchers or vases in groups to add height and dimension. This also helps prevent the decor from feeling too flat or one dimensional, and it's an easy way to update your space without spending a lot of money.

Another smart storage idea is adding a bar along the bottom of a shelf, where you can hang mugs or utensils. This simple hack is an easy DIY project and can make your small kitchen feel bigger by making everything easier to reach.

3. Install Pullout Cabinets

A smaller kitchen is more efficient and practical than a larger space, which can feel hectic and overcrowded. It also encourages a lean, clean eating and cooking layout and makes it easier to spot when dishes are out of place.

Use a mix of open shelving and wall units to maximize storage and avoid visually enclosing the room. If possible, choose tall cabinets that stretch to the ceiling to elongate the space. Designers like Kerri Pilchik have even hung a linen panel over shelving to create a crittall-style wall that's stylish, functional and inexpensive.

Darker hues can work well in small kitchen ideas and designs, but it's important to keep the color scheme light and bright. Otherwise, it can highlight daily messes and architectural blemishes.

4. Add Wallpaper

While it isn't always practical to remove upper cabinets in a small kitchen, you can still make them feel larger by covering them with bright wallpaper. This trick works well for dark kitchens since light colors help open up smaller rooms.

Look for a wallpaper with a large-scale print to visually expand your kitchen without making it feel crowded. Alternatively, try a simple stripe design to add texture and warmth.

For a bold statement consider putting a mural on an accent wall like

@lucyhamiltonathome did with her Garden of Eden wallpaper. This is a great way to bring in color and pattern without risking damage to the room as a whole.

Keep in mind that kitchens are often high traffic areas so surface printed designs may not be ideal unless you're willing to repaint frequently. For an easier option, look for peel-and-stick wallpapers that can be removed when you're ready for a change.

5. Add Art

Whether you prefer modern or traditional kitchen remodeling, adding art is an easy way to infuse personality into your small kitchen. Hang a gallery wall filled with children's drawings or a vintage soda fountain sign to create an inviting kitchen that makes you want to kick back and relax.

For a more subtle alternative, look for a room divider with a glass design. These space-saving options work well in narrow kitchens because they let light flow through and don't act as a solid barrier between rooms.

For tall ceilings, consider pushing storage up to the ceiling. A reclaimed wood rack like this one from Emilie Fournet Interiors adds texture to the kitchen and is an effective alternative to upper cabinets.

Season 2 of TRANSMISSIONS will run as eight weekly episodes screening every Wednesday at 9 pm BST and repeated on Friday at 9 am BST on Twitch. The 1st episode will air on 9th of September 2020. Each artist included in TRANSMISSIONS is paid a fee in return for their contribution. In some instances, artists have waived their fees in order to donate the money to a charity of their choice. With a sense of community, all the money used to pay artists in season 2 has been kindly donated by established art institutions and commercially stable artists.

Kat Anderson will show a collection of audio/visual notes on oppression, Black liberation and the white imagination.

Kat Anderson is a visual artist and filmmaker, working under an artistic and research framework called ‘Episodes of Horror’, which uses the genre of horror to discuss representations of mental illness and trauma as experienced by or projected upon Black bodies in media.

On 30 May 2020, at 3:52 pm EDT, Plastique Fantastique watched the Spacex Falcon 9 rocket carry NASA personal (for a fee) to the International Space Station and thought, as below, so above (next stop the moon, then Mars)… there is much today, down here, that needs our urgent attention… and there is much in the future, up there, to worry about too (including one million people living on Mars by 2050 as the first stage of planetary colonisation)… Earth views Mars as a planetary symbol for the cocksure warrior, and for violence, passion, assertion, and the weaponization of skill and sex… above all, Mars is the sign of competition (and Mars is a goal for commerce)… Mars is not this Mars though... That land is not that land… We know a different Mars (we have been there)… It is the hominids of Earth that have projected this image (of themselves) onto Mars… all other animals know this… Mars as ruling planet is not to be feared… it is Earth as ruling planet (Earth in Mars and the Mars in Earth) that we need to worry about… For episode two of the second series of Transmission2020, Plastique Fantastique offer moving images, stories and songs about planetary problems, below and above, with help from our friends Gentle Stranger, Christopher Kirubi and the collaboration of Arianne Churchman & Benedict Drew. The broadcast will feature clips from a film by Plastique Fantastique commissioned by Southwark Park Galleries. Plastique Fantastique is a collaboration between David Burrows, Simon O’Sullivan, Alex Marzeta and Vanessa Page and others, including Mark Jackson, Motsonian, Benedict Drew, Frankie Roberts, Harriet Skully, Ana Benlloch, Stuart Tait, Tom Clark, Simon Davenport, Joe Murray, Lawrence Leaman, Samudradaka and Aryapala. The collaboration is a performance fiction produced through comics, performances, text, music, film and assemblages, and investigates the relation of aesthetics and politics and sacred, popular and mass cultures. Less than a year after the UK's traumatic General Election, after a pandemic that would surely have been far better handled if the principles of communality and solidarity had been at the heart of government, Juliet Jacques presents a selection of films that mostly look back at socialist politics and culture. Starting with comrade John Smith's film made in response to the Covid-19 crisis, and the government's chaotic communications, these films - by Jasmina Cibic, Octavia Cortázar, the Duvet Brothers, Deimantas Narkevičius, Oleksiy Radynski, Kerry Tribe and others - engage creatively with ideology and art in Yugoslavia, the USSR, Cuba, the UK and beyond.

Juliet Jacques (b. 1981) is a writer and filmmaker, based in London. She has published two books, most recently Trans: A Memoir (Verso, 2015). Her short fiction, journalism and essays have appeared in numerous publications including The Guardian, Granta, Frieze, Sight & Sound, Wire, New York Times, 3:AM, The New Inquiry, Arts of the Working Class, London Review of Books and elsewhere. Her short films have screened in galleries and festivals worldwide. She has taught art and creative writing at the Royal College of Art and other institutions, and hosts the political arts podcast Suite (212).

Lawrence Abu Hamdan is a “Private Ear”. His interest with sound and its intersection with politics originate from his background as a touring musician and facilitator of DIY music. The artists audio investigations has been used as evidence at the UK Asylum and Immigration Tribunal and as advocacy for organisations such as Amnesty International and Defence for Children International together with fellow researchers from Forensic Architecture.

Abu Hamdan completed his PhD in 2017 from Goldmsiths College University of London and is currently a fellow at the Gray Centre for Arts and Inquiry at the University of Chicago

Abu Hamdan has exhibited his work at the 58th Venice Biennale, the 11th Gwanju Biennale, the 22nd Sydney Biennial and the 13th and 14th Sharjah Biennial, Witte De With, Rotterdam, Tate Modern Tanks, Chisenhale Gallery, Hammer Museum L.A, Portikus Frankfurt, The Showroom, London and Casco, Utrecht. His works are part of collections at MoMA, Guggenheim, Van AbbeMuseum, Centre Pompidou and Tate Modern. Abu Hamdan’s work has been awarded the 2019 Edvard Munch Art Award, the 2016 Nam June Paik Award for new media and in 2017 his film Rubber Coated Steel won the Tiger short film award at the Rotterdam International Film festival. For the 2019 Turner Prize Abu Hamdan, together with nominated artists Helen Cammock, Oscar Murillo and Tai Shani, formed a temporary collective in order to be jointly granted the award.

BBZ present a snapshot into queer Black British archives, memes that shaped us and a re- imagined queertopia. BBZ is a Black Queer Art & DJ collective raised in London with roots in nightlife and clubbing culture, working to challenge institutionalised and post colonial behaviours. We prioritise the experiences of Black queer womxn, femmes, trans folk and non binary people in all aspects of our work, providing physical and online spaces for this specific community.

Deep Deep Dream is a journey through the techniques of awakening taking the hallucinogenic form of a palindrome. What is a world?

Ignota Books is an invitation to awaken, and at the same time, dream. Founded in the last days of 2017 in the Peruvian mountains by Sarah Shin and Ben Vickers, Ignota publishes at the intersection of technology, myth-making and magic. Deriving our name from Hildegard of Bingen’s mystical Lingua Ignota, we seek to develop a language that makes possible the reimagining and reenchantment of the world around us.

Anne Duffau

is a cultural producer, researcher, and founder of A---Z, an exploratory/nomadic curatorial platform exploring artistic practices and knowledge exchange through collaborations, presentations, soundscapes, screenings and discussions. She has collaborated with a range of projects and organisations including ArtLicks, Southwark Park Galleries, Mimosa House and Danielle Arnaud Gallery, London Please Stand By, or-bits .com, PAF Olomouc Czech Republic & Tenderflix. Anne has previously run the StudioRCA Riverlight, London programme (2016-2018) and is currently the interim curator at Wysing Arts Center, a Tutor at the School of Arts and Humanities, and is the acting Lead in Critical Practice, within the Royal College of Art’s Contemporary Art Practice Programme. She has performed live music under Alpha through a number of projects and collaborations.

Hana Noorali

is an independent curator and writer based in London. In 2019 she was selected (together with Lynton Talbot) to realise an exhibition at The David Roberts Foundation as part of their annual curator’s series. She curated Lisson Presents at Lisson Gallery, London from 2017-2018 and from 2017 -2019, produced and presented the podcast series Lisson ON AIR. In 2018 Hana edited a monograph on the work of artist and Benedictine Monk, Dom Sylvester Houédard. Its release coincided with an exhibition of his work at Lisson Gallery, New York that she co-curated with Matt O’Dell. In 2007, she co-founded a non-profit project space and curatorial collective called RUN active until 2011. In 2020 Hana and her curatorial partner Lynton Talbot will be publishing an anthology that examines the intersection of poetry and film with (p) (prototype).

Tai Shani

is an artist living and working in London. She is the joint 2019 Turner Prize winner together with Lawrence Abu Hamdan, Helen Cammock and Oscar Murillo. In 2019 Tai was a Max Mara prize nominee. Her work has been shown at Turner Contemporary, UK (2019); Grazer Kunst Verein, Austria (2019); Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo, Italy (2019); Glasgow International, UK (2018); Wysing Arts Centre, UK (2017); Serpentine Galleries, London (2016); Tate, London (2016); Yvonne Lambert Gallery, Berlin (2016) and Irish Museum of Modern Art, Dublin (2016).

Logan Family HCs !!

-the Logan family loves each other very much but uh,,,that house is a fucking circus

-Ted and Deacon are 4, almost 5, years apart

-They Love football in that house !!!!

-Ted n Deacon are very cool w/ each other they’ve promised to never snitch when the other is doin somthn Sneaky

-ted’ll sneak out sometimes but deacon sneaks out more (and its easy bc they have a one level house (maybe a basement? Idk) also its the 80s,,,what’s an “alarm system”?)

-when deacon sneaks out to do hoodrat shit with his friends ted will stay awake to make sure he comes home safe

-whenever they get in trouble their dad makes them do push-ups or wallsits n shit bc it “builds character”? And will “benefit them in the long run”???? Anyways Ted and deacons arms are strong as shit now

-capt Logan has been blabbing about military school for a while now but ted never thought he was, like, deadass

-Ted’s dad used to be a delinquent type in high school way back in the late 50s and *his* parents sent him to military school to “get him back on track” so he used to think that will help Ted… He knows Ted is a Good Boy, but when he found out he was almost about to flunk out of school, it reminded him of all the ways HE messed up back in his youth (including not doing well in school) which he believed would lead to Ted getting into the same Bad Shit he used to do like get in switchblade fights or joining a gang or something.. Capt Logan eventually realized that he was overreacting and WAY projecting onto Ted bc he was scared as fuck and he also realized that Ted will be able to navigate the world as a genuinely good person, who knows right from wrong, and he will be JUST FINE !!!! (As in just fine w/o military school)

-Deacon usually initiates family game nights so when they do that it ends up a damn mess.. lots of times it’s Pictionary that goes too far or UNO which gets real intense real fast

-sometimes they’ll do a movie night which is chill tho

-Ted is the hugger of the family so he also always initiates group hugs n shit (which are awkward for deacon and capt Logan but ted is oblivious to it)

-Deacon is pretty okay at baseball but ted was ASS when he played basketball,,he’s delusional tho he thought he was Michael Jordan

-Deacon doesn’t remember his mom much but ted and dad try to cheer him up with pictures where they are all together and that helps a lil

-Mama Logan was a cute Chinese/Hawaiian lady who loved her family and loved her babies!! Every other year Ted, Deacon, n Capt Logan take a trip to visit her side of the family in Hawaii and just have a good time spending time with each all of each other and remembering their mom!

-the big forehead gene runs in their family (both parents had 5heads so there’s no escaping it)

-Ted and Deacon were both born in Hawaii but then they moved to California like very shortly after Deacon was born

-Oh yea before this time Capt Logan only planned to be in Hawaii for a lil bit but then he fell in love and built a life for a while🥺

-Deacon or Ted will enter the bathroom to grab something (like quips) and not care who is in there already…their dad hates this bc they have interrupted many shits. (I.e. Dad where are the—stop screaming it’s just me—where are the cotton balls?”)

-If Capt Logan gets enough drinks in him he might…bust a move or two

-and that’s exactly what you think it looks like

-Ted gets Daphne and Kerry mixed up all the time and they give him so much shit for that he just refers to them as “deacons lil girlfriends”

-Daphne, Kerry, and Deacon are considered the cool kids at their middle school and everyone wants to be a part of their group bc they’re so fun and chill

-they go on way more moves than Bill and Ted imo .. they’re just havin fun in each other’s presence it’s so fucking pure

-Ted’s worst fear is going bald bc his dad is bald up top and he !!! Does not want to be bald!!!!

-Capt Logan and Bills dad aren’t really friends they just acknowledge that their sons are BFFs so theyll stay cordial .. for now

-Ted made a whole presentation to his dad called “Why Ted Should be able to Get an Earring”

-that was for his first one tho the second one was diy

-Deacon overshares way too much information for no reason he’ll literally be sitting at the dinner table and say something like “can I be excused from the table I gotta fart so bad..”

-Capt Logan is such a “back in my day” ass dude so Ted and Deacon have made it their personal mission to get him hip to the times

-as a result he’ll try and use slang but it’s never correct

-sometimes he’ll even watch MTV when the house is empty

-Deacon knows how to drive he doesn’t have a permit nor a license but he knows how to do it

-Their dad always tries to encourage them to eat healthy n stuff and this has resulted in junk food stashes in both of their rooms…shit, capt Logan has one too

-Ted always tries to dress comfortably while Deacon is more style oriented.. sometimes Ted will pick out an article of clothing that he believes will “spice up” the outfit (I.e. a vest, a tie, a bandana, patches) but uhh … he looks comfortable that’s all imma say

-Deacon got DRIP tho

-Their dad cooks the most but its usually something along the lines of vegetables, a side, and a meat.,,but they eat out lots of times too and LOVE TV dinners … u cant make them give up TV dinners

-one time deacon said “I got dinner this time” and presented a meal which only consisted of baked beans and rolls. He’s learning tho deacon loves to cook meals

-Ted drinks all of the juice and only leaves a sip left..deacon is the one that yells at him bc he was also planning to drink all of the juice (all teens love Minute Maid juice)

-They have a patio in the backyard for sittin’

-Ted is usually very bad at skateboarding but lately he’s been getting the hang of it go ted

Mindy is not the only celebrity posting about the importance of wearing a mask right now, as coronavirus cases spread across the country.
