One of my favorite commissioned projects I got to work on this year. HP asked me to create coloring pages that centered around diversity and inclusion. They gave me 100% creative freedom to do what I wanted and paid me well to do it. Download the free pages here.
It is so important to see color because every color has power and meaning. From a young age we assign certain behavior to particular colors without realizing that it is harmful and something we must unlearn. For this reason, I will always put black women and girls at the center of my work. I understand that dark skin is far too often devalued, misrepresented, and overlooked.
Had the opportunity to illustrate this wonderful ABC board book with @nmaahc @smithsonian this past year and it's now available for purchase!!! Definitely wished there was a book like this when I was growing up or even when my niece was first learning her ABC's. It's truly an original, empowering, inclusive book for all children 💛.
One of my 2019 goals was to teach myself how to roller skate because I struggled so much with it when I was a kid. Growing and knowing myself a bit more now, I know I can do pretty much anything I set my heart to if I allow myself the time and patience.
Analog Girl Jacket, 2017. Acrylic paint x Fabric Medium on Denim
I had fun painting Erykah Badu on this jacket, she was one of the first ones that sold...a lot of people were bummed they missed out. I’ll paint her again once my schedule frees up. xoxo -Ariel
As of now, by 2020 I'll have 4 different books featuring my art in your local book stores! So happy to have collaborated with Renee Watson and Bloomsbury on this one. 💙💖
