~ PRIVATE AND SEMI-PRIVATE LESSONS ~

Private & Semi-Private Art Lessons • Type of class: fine art • Description: Artist and educator Laurie Brenden offers private and semi-private art lessons in the fine arts including watercolors, drawing, mixed media and much more. A private lesson is for one student. Semi-private lessons are for two students; the students can be siblings, family members, friends, etc. These lessons are available by appointment only and spaces are limited! Please contact the instructor directly for more information or to sign up. • Ages: 6 years to adult • Class Term: September 23 to November 15, 2019 • Day & Time: by appointment ONLY! • Class fee: Private -> $90.00 (for 6, 1 hour sessions) + $20 materials fee;   Semi-Private -> $66.00 per student (for 6, 1 hour sessions) + $20 materials fee (*Supply fee depends on media and unit chosen.)

~ KIDS, 8 to 12 ~

Kids Can Draw: Chibi Monsters • Type of class: drawing • Description: Manga is a Japanese style of comics; one popular aspect of manga is the chibis which are tiny, and often cute. Full of personality, style, and pizzazz we will learn how to draw chibi creatures, popularly known as “pocket monsters”. Each student will be encouraged to develop his or her own anime/manga characters and unique style of drawing. Skill Level, Beginner/Intermediate: No prior experience required. Small group instruction. All supplies are included. • Ages: 8 to 12 • Dates: September 24 – November 12, 2019 (8 weeks) • Day & Time: Tuesdays from 4:30 to 6:30 pm • Class fee: $71 + $25 materials fee

Kids Can Paint: Expressionism • Type of class: painting/mixed media • Description: Expressionism is exciting paintings full of emotions. In this class, students will explore the artwork of six famous expressionists, and then use their works as a springboard to explore art and creativity. Each artist will have an “inspiration” piece based on their style, use of color, etc. However, each student will be encouraged to explore his or her own artistic style, and create their own unique work or art. Skill Level, Beginner/Intermediate: No prior experience required. Small group instruction. All supplies are included. • Ages: 8 to 12 • Dates: September 19 to November 14, 2019 (8 weeks)        NO CLASS 10/31 • Day & Time: Thursdays from 4:30 to 6 pm • Class fee: $71 + $30 materials fee

For the last five years, I've been writing various pieces. Sometimes I finish them, sometimes I don't. There never seems to be enough time and I'm always shelving them in hopes that divine inspiration will hit me and somehow make them better. Even when I do finish something, I never quite figure out what to do next. 

I've resolved to change that. 

For the longest time I've wanted to get back to blogging, but I've been putting it off. Probably because this time, it's not to make money, or forward my professional career, or show that I might know something valuable about a particular topic...it's simply to quiet an insatiable need to write. 

I go back and forth about whether I'm a good writer or not. It's a constant inner struggle. But struggle or not, all I know is this: if an inexplicable force frequently arrives, quiet and unannounced, at a door inside your mind only you know about—and speaks words that compel you to immediately drop everything you're doing, no matter what you're doing, and write them down for fear you'll lose them forever—well, then, I'd say that means you're a goddamned writer. 

And who am I to deny that, or demean it because I'm afraid it isn't productive, or doesn't serve anyone, or just...sucks? Let the adjective before the noun change as many times as it damn well pleases—just so long as that noun is "writer." That’s what really matters to me. 

If one of my children told me all of this, I'd say, what the hell are you waiting for? Who really cares if it sucks? Just start writing!  

Time to get out of my own way and just do what I'm inexplicably called to do.
