Today’s kiln opening before and after. I’m thrilled to have these guys going into my shop when I re-open later this month! Just look at how gorgeous that @maycocolors Blue Grotto glaze is😍 This is one thing checked off my shop opening list✅ Much more to do! Not to mention a couple other things I’d like to play with before. I’m tying to get my hands on some specific glazes that have been hard to find. Anyone else having supply issues?? It seems the handful of things I have my heart set on have been out of stock forever! Slowly chugging along, I’ve been battling with pets and a child who think sleep is for the weak. Swipe to see the after from today's kiln opening. After being glazed the berry bowl will get fired at a higher temp and will turn a much deeper brown. I can't wait to get that one glazed in a new green I've never used before💚💚💚 I will be doing a lot of glazing next. I will be making my fall update items too! I was told recently my feed looks very "aesthetic" which is honestly such a flattering comment because it's one of the things I've had the hardest time achieving! I'm posting this and possibly ruining that though. Why?! Because reality is IMPORTANT! As a self taught artist a lot or trial, error, and frankly, a load of luck has gone into the pieces I've made and continue to make. A recent reel showed failures during the building process which aren't very catastrophic because you squish the clay and restart. THIS however is a failure of the final product. There's no going back, tweaking, adjusting, it's just a ruined piece. While trying to detach my stilts this piece shattered. BUT, I'll tell you about this failure. It. Was. Beautiful! Sparkling, perfectly fused layers of glaze, that danced together while firing to create this superb swirling melting design! They just melted a tad TOO much. I needed to share the beauty of this glaze combination more permanently than just in stories though, it's too lovely. And although the piece was a loss, I did keep a remnant of the disaster as inspiration. I also have two more made which will be similarly glazed, with some adjustments! TL;DR Just a reminder not everything goes perfectly, particularly if your trying something new. So don't be discouraged if it doesn't work out right away, keep at it you'll figure it out. And remember all the "perfection" you see on this app has endless failures hidden behind them, they just aren't "pretty" enough to share. Another glaze kiln load finished. I can't get over the metallic look on that one leaf. It wasn't quite what I had imagined but incredible none the less! The dark part of the moons is the same glaze @maycocolors burnished steel, I'm loving it! The leaves need final detailing and will be good to go. The moons will be getting beaded too. Before and after of the moons from yesterday. Also, some comparisons of two glazing techniques I used with @maycocolors light magma glaze. The moon with more even cratering was achieved by putting the glaze on in thick coats, the less even cratering used multiple thin coats. I also added more glaze and refired the latter to get more craters. I will be using the thicker application technique from now on, unless specifically looking for a less even texture. I'll add a reel later this week of how I put the glaze on in thick coats. My small kiln load was mostly successful. One cup was uncooperative but that's OK. The rest turned out well! The two bisque pieces need glazed and fired once more. Many many moons... I'm so digging how these came out! These are the test batch for an eventual collab which will be announced at a later date. Here's the before and after of this small kiln load that was fired to figure out whether the design/glaze worked well full scale and to see how many fit in the kiln in one go. I've been wanting to make some moon phases for a while and finally had a great reason! I have another experiment to do with new clay AND glaze, this time high fire. This means the kiln will heat to 2200°+ instead of the normal 1900° I fire at.
