What style of fashion do each nation wear (with images please)?

Asidian - Regency to Napoleonic! Capes and trains are a pretty big thing there

Molian - Practically anything French 1726-1799, honestly. 1750s are my fave tho!

Setaris - Anything 1800s, mostly like, 1840s to 1900

Birye - Dutch Golden Age type clothing, I suppose? I don't know what else to call it honestly

Almswit - Elizabethan! A lot of ruffs, a bigger ruff than the one in the picture below

Athaigary - Italian Renaissance, don't tell the other nations

Riya - Its so hard to like, describe what I want for Riyins honestly. The hair for the third one, not the dress tho. The Mancini women have like the exact hair that I imagine for Riyins

Here's a Two in One Birthday gift for @asteriskdatboi

The first one, he asked me to Yinna in her Kingdom Smash attire. Just without the Bamboo she uses. And I'm sure she'll have her deck of cards from her pocket or shorts. Then she's ready to help out with Shadow and the others.

For the second one, I drew Lighting giving Yinna a present, since her dad already gave her one, now it'll be her turn to give Yinna a present as well. Since she owes her one when they both went to be Mermaids together 3 months ago.

1) What was the first element of your OC that you remember considering (name, appearance, backstory, etc.)?

RIYA — because we knew the campaign at large would span the 15-year long third blight, the first thing i landed on was the base concept of a character who could grow into the type who would willingly brave that ultimate sacrifice to end the blight when it came down to it. obviously with no guarantee of Give Me That Death It's All I Want or even reaching that point, i was just interested in exploring what type of clown i could force into this inevitable character development. 

MEREDITH — god. it's been so long. it was probably her appearance because i went into origins as a baby da fan and didn't know what to expect. which is kinda funny now because her appearance is the biggest change she’s ever had thru all these years. 

ELLANA — on my second playthrough when i knew at least a little bit of what the fuck i was doing in the setting, i believe the first consideration for her was whether i wanted to double down on my interest in the elven culture in thedas that'd i'd developed during my first run of the game or if i wanted to try focused on other aspects (fairly obvious nowadays that i went with the former). 

3) How did you choose their name?

RIYA — i went back into dms with the dm and turns out i chose the name because of the cute nicknames you could get out of it. so pretty much nailed it first try because riya is iconic tbh

MEREDITH — she's one of my oldest characters which means i didn't do Any research before picking her name, meredith was chosen purely because i've been in love with the name since i first read the vampire diaries books when i was a tween. its meaning being “great ruler” was pure destiny, i'll never get over that discovery. 

ELLANA — default name pretty 🥰🥰 and no i still haven't landed on an extended version of her name, don't talk to me about it i have problems making decisions (someone send help).

4) In developing their backstory, what elements of the world they live in played the most influential parts?

RIYA — without a doubt the fact that mages in nevarra were given an absurd amount of freedoms compared to countless places, i loved that. i believe soon after that i stumbled upon the vague history tidbit that a duchess had donated her “palatial estate” to become the new college of magi because she had a mage daughter, and that became a solid base for the new pc right quick. riya was shaped so fast between that initial concept and these two discoveries it wasn't even funny. somewhere in there i found the grand tourney business, dunno when. 

MEREDITH — okay so take literally every element of the human noble origin story and its plot through the game and there. you got it. the entire laundry list that had me fucking obsessed with mere since the jump because everything there ticks my boxes. the politics, the family ties and history, the kingdom pride, the sense of duty that's matched in intensity only by the inescapable desire to enact justice (bordering on violent vengeance lmao) for your family and people with your own two goddamn hands because nobody else is going to get it for you. also you have a cute dog right off the bat, that rules. 

ELLANA — her creation is so. muddled to me because she was the first character i ever played a da game with, so most of the influential elements likely just popped up in inquisition at some point or other and nothing stands out there. my best guess would be that the vallaslin and god domains played a good part tho, because there being a goddess of motherhood and justice has been huge for her.

14) If you had to narrow it down to 2 things that you MUST keep in mind while working with your OC, what would those things be?

RIYA — it physically pains me sometimes, but the first is that i have to remember just how privileged this woman was and try to reflect that in what she says and how she reacts to things (i took psychic damage when she blatantly was judging every bit of that little village). second would be that i have to remind myself how much pain and trauma is gathering up in this mage, unhealed and unacknowledged, because sometimes i can forget while caught up in all that’s going on just how fucking bad it really is. i’ll go quiet here and there during a scene not because i can’t think of what riya would say, but because i realized something would’ve triggered her to spiral into the negative feelings and all she’d be capable of is a “hm” or clear i want to get the fuck out of here one-liner lmao

MEREDITH — number one is that she’s putting noble responsibilities above all else always, sometimes to the detriment of other priorities and even relationships. second is that “canon” doesn’t matter at all and i can have fun with her story however i want, who gives a fuck. follow the fun and all that. i have to keep this in mind for her out of everyone because she has some Strong negative opinions on certain characters which have some,,,aggressive fans and that held me back for a good while lol

ELLANA — first is that she approaches things with gentleness and empathy 99% of the time, even if it’s not advisable and she has people pushing against it. second is naturally Legacy, because that fuck haunts her past, present and future. she's constantly musing on it for both herself and others, and its influence on her can't be noted enough. i have a vivid memory of pausing the hakkon dlc to repeatedly bash a pillow against my face to let out the emotions i was dealing with because the plot was trying to end my fucking life with ameridan and ellana.

18) What is the most recent thing you’ve discovered about your OC?

RIYA — the first thing i can think of was a few months back with the callout that correctly identified riya’s lowkey desperation to get warden-commander satine’s approval as her having mommy issues. blatantly obvious fact, yeah, but it had gone without being commented on and it took me tf out for a few minutes after hearing it. as you can imagine she’s thriving after each positive response from sending updates sent the warden-commander’s way.

MEREDITH — ooooh, a few things because of that long ass warden sheet i’ve been slowly chipping away at in the docs. i believe the most recent is that i never gave this poor woman some hobbies outside of a minor interest in map sketches, so i’ve been on-off thinking about that for a little while. who knows what i’ll land on, i’m lazy. embroidery was a contender because it's the Classic for noble ladies and also i think she deserves arts & crafts fun, just look at her life she needs it

ELLANA — nothing really, she's been consistent for a long while 🤷‍♀️ closest thing is that i did very briefly revisit the ancient idea that i think she deserves one or a few kids to fulfill her “mama bear” energy to a more literal degree but that's mostly a goof. 95% a goof. maybe 90%. if she ends up w kids at the end of this week i can’t be held accountable-

Albums Of 2022: 50-26

Welcome to another year, another countdown. My music listening time has shrunk once again, but there’s still plenty of great releases that have got multiple listens.

I’ve noticed a trend that releases are getting shorter, and people are still calling them albums when they are an EP or mini-album. So my criteria is this. If it is 9 or more tracks, it is an album. If it is 8 tracks or less and 30 mins or longer, it is an album. Any less than that, it is an EP or a mini-album and not eligible for this list.

Honourable mentions to some artists whose albums very nearly made the list but just missed out: 

Eye Of Melian, Andy Gardner of Plump DJs, The Birthday Massacre, Chase & Status, Let’s Eat Grandma, Mall Grab, xPropaganda, Riya Sawayama, Yumi & The Weather, HALIENE, The Hunna, White Lung, Witch Fever, Taylor Swift, Arcade Fire, The Anix and Röyksopp with the second volume of their “Profound Mysteries” trilogy.

3rd album of cinematic alt-rock from the Nottingham band, mellow songs building to string laden crescendos.

Nova Twins "Supernova"

The self described 'Urban punk' duo, of whom Tom Morello is a big fan, deliver their 2nd album, and it's a blend of punk, hip-hop and electronics mixed up to deliver a huge amount of energy.

Volturian "Red Dragon"

The Italians deliver another album of symphonic, melodic and easily accessible metal. Though there are other genres too, "Torn Asunder", for example, is completely electronic, inspired by trance and house.

Tinlicker "In Another Lifetime"

A blend of deep house, progressive house and trance, on the 2nd album from the Utrecht based duo, which is hypnotic and a times beautiful.

Bis "Systems Music For Home Defence"

The Glasgow indie-popsters return, with cheeky lyrics, catchy hooks and danceable beats. It's not quite up to their "Social Dancing" - "Return To Central" peak, but it's a big improvement on everything else released since then.

Confidence Man "Tilt"

90s dance influenced pop bangers are the order of the day here, with tongue firmly in cheek but with a clear love for the era and the tunes from it. As a comment on one of their videos on YouTube (written by an Andy Brennan) put it "They ride that line between sincerity and parody SO WELL".

Silversun Pickups "Physical Thrills"

6th album from the LA alt-rockers. Always reliably good, this might be a more varied and inventive collection than normal, and it works a treat.

Sick Joy "We're All Gonna F***ing Die"

I like the band's own bio... "Cutting together malign heaviness with acidic melody then tying into place with the reigns of contagious pop." It's a good description, for this band that mix a bit of grunge, a bit of punk and a whole lot of hooks, that wouldn't have felt entirely out of place in the 90s, without being a retro throwback.

Ciaran McAuley "Permission To Exhale"

Debut album from this rising star of the trance scene. The first half is a bit more mellow, seemingly taking inspiration from Solarstone's pure trance sound, the second half a bit more euphoric and club leaning (but only slightly). A few excellent guest vocalists on here too, such as Audrey Gallagher and Lisa Gerrard.

Fonzerelli "Silent Dreams & Misguided Stories"

Lovely mid-tempo trance and house (and a splash of breaks), beautiful synths and pianos and some great guest vocals.

Bloods "Together, Baby!"

3rd album from Sydney's Bloods who are on fine form with their punk-pop-meets-riot-grrrl tunes. Big melodies, bouncy riffy fun.

Cold Kingdom "Life // Love"

Powerful, big chorused hard rock from the Minneapolis band. Fans of strong female vocals mixed with big riffs should check them out.

Daxson "Face The Future"

Trance producer and DJ Dan Dobson releases his debut artist album. And it suffers from the same thing a lot of modern trance artist albums suffer from... too many tracks which are consequently too short (in order to fit them on the equivalent of a single CD). This means the tracks don't get to breathe, and some just get lost while you are listening. But regardless, there is some quality uplifting trance on here, so it's well worth an effort.

Röyksopp "Profound Mysteries III"

Their third album release of the year and the final part of their Profound Mysteries trilogy, they finish the project strong. Some cracking tunes on here.

Pale Waves "Unwanted"

Starting off as a goth-synth-indie-pop-rock band (is that a thing?), they changed their sound for album 2 and became an average Avril Lavigne soundalike. Tweaking that slightly here for album 3, they are now a very good Avril Lavigne soundalike. Songs filled with big choruses, singalong hooks, some joyous, some heartfelt, every track worth your time.

Kasabian "The Alchemist's Euphoria"

Kasabian's first album with Serge Pizzorno stepping up to the frontman role, and it is an interesting beast. He does a good job as vocalist, and musically the album has influences of rock, hip-hop, dance, even Pink Floyd-esque moments.

Bush "The Art Of Survival"

Only Gavin Rossdale remains from the original line up, but the rebooted Bush has been putting out passable albums since 2011. Their last album, 2020's 'The Kingdom' was suprisingly good, and this one is even better. Full of big choruses and chunky riffs, and though it doesn't sound exactly like 90s Bush, it feels like listening to Bush of the old days.

The Crystal Method "The Trip Out"

Kicking off with an electro-rock stomper, you'd wonder if TCM have radically changed direction, but don't worry, there are plenty of breakbeat and electro stompers with various guest vocalists on this short but varied album.

Muse "Will Of The People"

Ah, Muse. I loved Muse. 4 brilliant albums, one of the best live bands on the planet... then it started going a bit pear-shaped. Yes, there was still the occasional great song, but they started veering into either being too bland, or far too theatrical Queen pastiche. And then came the entirely misjudged 'Simulation Theory', essentially an electro pop album, still with the Queen influences. It was lacking in punch, credibility and tunes. So, while flawed, 'Will Of The People' is a very pleasant surprise. Yes, it still contains some strong glam rock and Queen influences, giving it a sense of spoof, but it also has some of the best songs they've done in years. 'Won't Stand Down' and 'Kill Or Be Killed' are monsters that will go down very well live, 'Ghosts' and 'Verona' are actually rather pretty, overall it's the strongest Muse album since 'Black Holes & Revelations', so there's some hope for another classic yet.

Mass Sky Raid "Calm In Chaos"

Epic, melodic alt-rock from this Aussie band. Rock enough to not be middle of the road, mellow and radio friendly enough to be huge if given the right exposure.

Blood Command "Praise Armageddonism"

Blood Command's 4th album and first with vocalist Nikki Brumen. There are less electronic influences this time round, but still huge energy, chunky riffs, powerhouse drumming, screams and almost poppy melodic hooks.

Charlotte Wessels "Tales From Six Feet Under Vol. II"

The former Delain singer continues her solo career, full of all sorts of styles, from the symphonic metal she's known for, to rock to art-pop. This collection might not be quite as strong as Vol 1, but it still further proves we have a very special artist here.

Subjective "The Start Of No Regret"

Goldie & James Davidson bring us their 2nd Subjective album, and it's a winner. Beats that range from drum & bass to trip hop via breakbeat and house, deep bass and soulful vocals, it's a fabulous listen and is arguably Goldie's best album output since 'Timeless'.

Avril Lavigne "Love Sux"

Avril goes pop-punk for her best album in over a decade. Punchy, upbeat, and catchy as hell. I don't know whether it would necessarily win any pop-punk fans over if they weren't Avril fans to begin with, but it should work a treat on people like me who were Avril fans but were unimpressed by the last couple of albums.

Giuseppe Ottaviani "Horizons (Part 1)"

The trance legend releases a 2 part (well, 3 if you count the remixes) album for 2022, and this first part is full of lush, mid-tempo trance that mixes in elements of deep house and almost Jean-Michel Jarre like synths. It's warm, it's uplifting, you could certainly dance to it but it also feels perfect for chilling to on the beach or by a pool on a sunny day.

He asked me to draw Sammir in his Kingdom Smash Attire, and i wanted to make his outfit look similar to Roxas. I also wanted to include Sammir where he's going to join in with Shadow's Party and Miya decided to join too. I bet the three would be perfect to help out even if they want to find Spot and Riya in the game world. And for Sammir, i decided to make him a Swordfighter like Shadow and the others. Shadow explained Sammir when he encounters enemies like the Animal Crossers and the Smash enemies too. And Sammir manage to get his own deck of cards like Shadow and Miya. Now the three are ready to go on the adventure and find some of their family members and friends.

this is my moment to spread the truth that riya and minah would be excellent dance partners and they could have a lot of fun during downtime comparing which dances they both already know + teaching the other ones they don’t. minah was a in a whole ass troupe as a performer and riya used to spend at least 60% of her time as a thedas party girl, you can’t tell me that they don’t have a ridiculous bank of knowledge on this topic when putting their heads together.

RIYA — i believe in my heart she used to convince her brother sebastian of the most ridiculous lies simply to annoy him. hall of fame for the entire week she got away with convincing him that their mother was about to marry her off to some royal/noble in another region, resulting in him going on numerous rants until their father heard one and the truth came out. probably spawned from her getting irritated by his snide comments about the king's permissive nature with mage freedoms. she had no choice but to convince him she'd be allowed to leave with no push back whatsoever just for a marriage, if you think about it. somebody had to bully him about it!!

MAEVE — i keep thinking of sad things to do with carden and i don't want that in my life. i'm shoving them all into a box and ignoring them, we don't need his bitch ass rn. so ummmmm how about just goofing on the fact that maeve's cranked the drama, angst, and romance levels all up to 169% in most of her stories and convinced such a staggering amount of people who read her stories of some absurd things. anti-witcher propaganda is in shambles because the beloved bard wrote of one that wept on his knees while confessing his love to a partner because the emotions were all Too Much and now that's just spreading around as gospel to some folk. i don't know who that tale would be about but it's funny, and also rip to the witchers who play into the "we have no emotions" thing for extra intimidation if they run into any of these bard fans, it's gonna be a rough one ✌️

🥣 for a food-themed headcanon

RIYA — i feel that as somebody who grew up in an incredibly privileged position, as well as in a kingdom that goes so hard with its aesthetics and appreciation for beauty that it extends into their cuisine, presentation is the most important part of food for riya. she'd be willing to overlook a dip in quality of the ingredients (mostly. she'd probably still lowkey shade it) if the plating was beautiful enough, but anything that looks low effort will immediately have her appetite leaping out of the nearest window.

MAEVE — (food adjacent so i'm counting this) maeve can't cook for the life of her so she turned to setting tables to feel useful during meal times, then ended up Loving it as an activity because it was an unexpected and easy output for her creativity and attention to detail. carden would've ruined this for a few years (as he did with most things), but this is something she could've rekindled enjoyment of fairly quickly after he'd gone with the help of greyson. he gets to go ham in a fully-stocked rich kitchen and she gets to spend 40 minutes deciding which flowers are perfect for the evening’s dinner before finally working on any other part of the table, and that's just good teamwork idk what to tell you

🎉 for a celebration-themed headcanon

RIYA — i stand by my goof statement from numerous sessions ago that riya used to crash a bunch of parties/events in cumberland just because she could get away with it. she's done it technically twice now in-session so i believe she deserves to have gotten away with it multiple times in the past. probably, yes, she would have been invited to so very many events because of what family she's from, but i'm not talking about those ones we're ignoring those rn. we're talking about riya walking into a semi-private gala hosted by royalty or some shit and getting away with it because she batted her eyelashes at the right guard or noble and then she got to spend the night vibing out as andraste intended. i'm counting this as celebration themed bc she'd certainly feel celebratory for getting away with these things lmao

MAEVE — the thing is that this bard has too much money and that means she can get away with throwing celebration parties over whatever she wants purely as an excuse to call all her friends and loved ones together so they can have a night day&night enjoying themselves. maeve's gestures are so grand that she's planning parties just so people can have a break and feel her affection through the efforts.

Chatty Puppets

After spending a few days at Srirampur and kick-starting the summer with fun and food, mother and I were back on our original plan to spend some days in Solapur. It felt great to reunite with some cousins and five minutes into meeting each other after a year, we were already planning some of our adventures. This included swimming in the river, going to the village fair, and watching the annual puppet show.

Swimming was the most fun, with so many children, there were many games we played in the water and it was definitely refreshing given the 40 degrees Celsius temperature of the summer. However, my cousin, Riya was the most excited about the puppet show. I couldn’t understand what was so fascinating about the puppet show but she said that it was based on a true story which had taken place centuries ago in the village. Village stories always interested me, coming from a big city I couldn’t comprehend these myths and tales which circulated in the village and everyone knew about them.

One evening we finally went to watch the most talked about the puppet show, the story was about a tragic love story between a prince and a princess from rival kingdoms. I enjoyed watching it and the traditional elements specific to the village grabbed my attention. After the show was over, Riya wanted to go see the puppets up close, and hence we went backstage to check them out.

Riya and I went backstage and interacted with the women who were controlling the puppet, they explained to us the materials the puppets were made of and the process of making these traditional ones specifically. They were amazed by our interest and we were intrigued by their effort and story. They left us alone some time with the puppets while they went to get some tea and snacks. After chatting for a while among ourselves, we felt that one of the puppets moved. Riya laughed it off but next, something that we never thought happened. The puppets started speaking. We were startled and didn’t know how to react. But we didn’t get a creepy feeling and wanted to stay to listen, the princess went on to talk more about her love for the prince. We stayed to listen but the women seemed to take longer than expected.

We shared our goodbyes with the talking puppet and still couldn’t believe what was happening. We decided not to tell this to anyone, and just enjoy the fact that we had a very unique and unbelievable experience. At the end of it, Riya had succeeded in convincing me that this was the best experiences to be had in the village.
