Meet Rebecca
Meet Rebecca Rubin, a Jewish-German girl growing up in 1814 in New York City. Rebecca longs to be in the spotlight, which isn't easy in her big family.
Read about the historical basis of Rebecca's story under the cut.
Moving Rebecca's story 100 years back meant I had to make some changes. While New York City already had a thriving Jewish community by the regency era, it looked very different to that of 1914's. There was only one synagogue in the city and it followed Sephardic liturgy, despite the majority of the community being Ashkenazi. There also wasn't a large number of Russian Jews in New York, instead most new Jewish immigrants were coming from Poland or Germany. In the 18-teens and twenties German-Jewish immigration especially ramped up and by 1825, the German-Jewish community had established their own synagogue in the city.

Purim with Rebecca (1814)
Chag Purim sameach! Happy Purim!
This year, Rebecca is Little Red Riding Hood for Purim, complete with a mask that matches her cloak. The tradition of dressing up in costumes for Purim dates back to the medieval era and considering the popularity of costume balls during the regency era, Rebecca would have likely also dressed up.

Meet Lucy
Meet Lucy Morgan, a 9-year-old girl living in 1874 Victoria, British Columbia, one of Canada's newest provinces. Lucy's father runs a general store and the family lives in the apartment above. Lucy's parents are a part of a group of 700 Black Americans that left San Francisco and the extreme oppression they were experiencing, for Victoria in the late 1850s and early 1860s. These settlers created a thriving community in this growing city, however, they began to leave in large numbers after the end of the American civil war to return to the United States and Lucy worries that someday soon her family will leave too.
I can't wait to post more of Lucy's story in the future and its historical context!

Skirt from Kirsten’s Winter Skirt and Blouse
Female figure, unknown date, American Swedish Institute
One of my blog followers asked if I found any evidence that Kirsten’s Winter Skirt and Blouse were inspired by Sami design. It’s definitely a possibility, and this wooden figure wears a skirt which is very similar to Kirsten’s. She's also carrying a baby in her traditonal Sami carrying bag.

[BTW I'm @kirstenlarsons] I just received some dolls from my childhood (three fabric dolls from the My Doll brand my aunt found in her house) and I'm a bit stuck on the process of deciding who they're going to be. How do you usually go through with that?
Good question!
For modern characters, I like to give them a slightly obscure or unusual interest of mine. Then I can fully develop that aspect of my character's life, because it's something I'm passionate about and so can make it look realistic for them. You can also give them a major life event that has an impact on them, like maybe they visited a beach where they found an ancient coin washed up from a shipwreck, so now they're interested in metal detecting and finding all sorts of cool little treasures on the beach.
For historical characters, I pick a year close to where something especially interesting was happening, and incorporate that into the background of their lives, kind of the way American Girl does. It doesn't have to be a huge one-time thing; like with Samantha, she was coming of age in a time when technology was changing the way people lived their lives, when women began demanding the right to participate equally in society, and when the feelings around child labor was beginning to change. Compare that with Nanea experiencing a one-time historical event that shaped her life and her future.
I hope that helps!

Intro Post
I hope you're enjoying the ZoomInAG series!
I've realized that on the individual outfit posts Tumblr mobile does the zooming in for you, so it'll be blurry to look at. It shows up tiny and unblurred on browser though.
Here are some links that might be helpful:
Zoom In AG tag (just the art posts).
Rules of the game for how the series works.
Send me your doll or OC to draw link goes to a post with more info, which in turn has a link to a Google form with space for you to describe your idea or upload pictures or collages.
MistakesThere are definitely mistakes, and I'm open to corrections, especially if I got your culture wrong. Here's how to let me know.
Asks: I'm happy to post clips or zooms of anything I've posted before! Let me know if you would like to see:
A specific outfit and year ("Show me Addy's meet dress in 1875")
A specific run of an outfit ("Show me all of Addy's meet dress variations")
