OMG I just finished reading Kittyquest by @dierker and i just gotta say, It's so freaking good, the ART OMG, they clearly put their whole heart (and full ass, no half ass here) into this thing, everything is stunning. It's a wonderful exploration of being a Demi-god in earth C and the most well-thought-out one I've ever read/seen. I hadn't read it yet because it was short (lol I know, "only" 1120 pages, I'm terrible) but I'm glad I found it through some fic links from a fanfic set around Roxy in the same universe. I have other thought's about it but ill put those in another post, so it doesn't spoil stuff for people and because I think any homestuck would enjoy the thoughts it popped into my head.

pilot light, pale rapture is a post-game fic about jade and her Issues. jade/davepeta. has some excellent jane work in there and is meant to imply june pre-transition. i'd also like to recommend this author's other work, including the collected works of the originators, and the fanventure kittyquest which you can find on mspfa. both the collected works and kittyquest are about a richly detailed take on earth C, with accompanying myths; kitty quest is about jade and davepeta's daughter kitty harley-leider. very very good.

Jade: Endure is about what it would have been like for jade to grow up with her corpse in her own house. short and very good. gen.

grant me wings that i might fly is about jade english raising jake english up to her eventual death. very good. gen.

one more night (your ex-lover remains dead) is a junejasprose fic about trauma and what it means to be a rose left behind. if you're going to read ANY jasprose fic you have to read this one it's literally iconic to me and changed the way i see her forever. junejasprose.

Light Without Effulgence is a jake & rose friendship manifesto and it is HILARIOUS. "rose, you gather, is like dirk if he were a woman and capable of being happy" like that's hilarious to me. gen.

Bitter is a fancomic about jade and rose and i'm not going to spoil the surprise of what it's about but it's DELICIOUS. jaderose.

CHARGING THE VOID is a space opera roserezi au with hints of vrisrezi left behind and also both rose and terezi are trans and also it's DELICIOUS like i can't even say anything about it. if anyone has read baru cormorant and is familiar with it it's like that. roserezi, unlike pretty much anything else i've recced here it DOES have a sex scene so if you're uncomfortable with that it's not for you.

think about staying alive is a kidswap au! about rose strider my favorite kidswap <3 gen.

Postscript is about rosefef, rebellion au, being the last two left alive carrying out a rebellion against the condesce. rosefef.

Transperience is about calliope and the trans experience! fancomic, gen. very good.

hi this is like super rando but i had a dream a couple days ago abt kittyquest

the dream basically went

after the fight and the reunion of the harley-leiders, kitty “woke up” properly. apparently my brain thought “yes kitty in coma” and her family werent real :( and i was in kittys pov when she woke up from the coma and she was in like, a grassy brick wall surrounded area then i stopped being in kittys pov AND I SAW WHAT LOOKED LIKE HUMAN RAMONA RUN PAST BUT SHE WAS WHITE. im still so confused

is this how kq will end canon?? /j

Have you read the MSPFA Kittyquest? It has beautiful illustrations and depictions of Earth C, a really nice outview on the post-game events, a LOT of meta on Jade and Davepeta, Earth C society shenanigans, some characters' journeys through parenthood + their mounting anxieties over immortality, and kids having creepy and emotionally charged adventures! I just thought you'd like it, if you haven't read it yet.

Kittyquest is one of my favorite fanadventures! I highly recommend it. I love how all the kids are depicted, all the pesterlogs are either very fun or very frank or emotionally resonating, and Kitty & Ramona are good characters on their own right, not only 'javepeta's kid' or 'rosemary's kid' - that's a massive win in my book. I also love love love the art.

if you ever had to make fankids for bdth (like no choice but you HAVE TO) what would they be. any pairing goes im just immensely curious what sort of children concoctions you would make given the chance.

i could literally never compete with kitty harley-leider and ramona flamel. they’re just so good. like. never in the world will i make a fankid as lovely as kittyquest

but you did ask so heres my process:

actually this is hellish because im VERY picky about making new characters for bdth. like theres a lot of new characters but theres a specific angle that each new character i make has to take. outside of my fucking light player brain im thinking about pairings and characters whod have that parental instinct and nothings really coming to me yet and i dont really like causing drama in rel8ionships. so heres some concepts

there is already a carapace who showed up in birthday train who isnt specifically anyones daughter but has fankid energies (shes the one with the big smile when putting out the fires. her name is KZ and shes actually just a character from boxgame whos been transplanted into bdth. i love kz.)

jaderoxycallie. human twins named calendula and calpurnia, who kind of inherit duality is waking/dreaming. calendula has the vibe of constantly having just woken up and calpurnia has the vibe of constantly having just fallen asleep

thats really all i got here, im not on the right wavelength for fankids with bdth i dont think. like, its hard thinking in terms of “pairings and nuclear families”, like. i think one of the things that sets bdth apart from hs2 and subscript and such is that a lot of time is spent thinking and deconstructing their approach to cre8ing a society and at least to most characters, it starts with the shape of a family, and even to those who lived with their guardians, its hard to grasp, because the guardian and their charge does not always a family make

How do you put together the backgrounds for Kittyquest? I’m planning to make my own fanadventure sometime in the future and have no idea how people do it XD

hello! i started doing collage-type backgrounds for fics that were in complicated scenes that i didnt want to draw, so i had to find a way to work around it. some of my earliest collage work can be seen in a pacific girl in america.

ive considered filming my process for how i create, say, a room in kittyquest. for example, i have a new room coming up that will probably involve me taking an empty room stock image and filling it with furniture. but depending on the scene, my approach is different. for this panel, i took a picture of a forest, put a gaussian blur on it, played with hues and overlays, and drew some trees on top of preexisting ones so the figures wouldnt look out of place. for this panel - i basically used gdansk for all of my parlourhouse scenery - i wanted to use two different streets that dont converge in real life. so i took out the vanishing point of the street, replaced it with another building that i removed the sky from, and used an entirely different image for the sky itself. for kitty and ramonas rooms, on the other hand, i had to basically do it all myself. a lot of rooms in the harley-leider house are empty rooms that i then painted the walls of and furnished individually. this can backfire and cause you to hesitate in suspending your belief, however, when you try to image how the house is set up. kittys house from the outside does not match the window placement of the interior, but i try to make things look as seamless as i can. another thing that becomes important is making sure you have multiple shots of the same room. this became a massive pill when i was doing both rose and roxys homes, and it was why i had to painstakingly craft multiple angles of ms joanas classroom manually.

there are a few things that will get you through the process faster. remove.bg, if you dont use photoshop and thus cant use a subject select tool, and sketchfab, which has a lot of good free 3d models that you can rotate around and screengrab to fit your backgrounds perspective.

the most important thing that sells a collaged background, i think, is how your figure interacts with it. that means making sure that shadows and lighting fall in a convincing way. i try to make sure they cast a shadow on their surroundings and sometimes add a trace of reflected light on one side of them. something else you can do is use overlays to indicate a time of day. for example, in the early pages of kittyquest i used a lot of oranges and yellows to show that it was morning, then took those overlays away as morning turned to early afternoon.

i guess what im saying is that you really have to just play around with it. there are a lot of ways to make things flow together convincingly and i learn new tricks all the time just by experimenting. its satisfying when everything just clicks together - its like solving a puzzle.

its a shame “jades daughter” isnt exclusively referring to kitty harley-leider, the only fan kid who’s ever fucking mattered, ever, besides ramona flamel, the other fan kid to ever matter. 

aside from that, i’ve kind of come around on it, honestly. like, yeah it’s objectively pretty shitty representation, and i really wish that if kanayas role in meat was to suffer it also wasnt to suffer in candy too, since like. rose cheating is for sure a fanfic trope, but kanaya is getting the shit end of the stick in both timelines, but it seems like kanaya has reacted like kanaya does, which is to be Okay With It, until shes not, and im excited to see her go apeshit because she deserves it more than anyone in homestuck. i think vriska and kanaya should go apeshit on earth-c together. 

thats how i fucking feel. its bad writing, but as far as bad writing goes, this is the kind of thing ive always wanted from the candy timeline. its strayed from being offensive on purpose and is now insane and stupid on purpose, which is still insane and stupid but homestucks always been insane and stupid. at least its not actively triggering anymore
