She was born in the early 1900s in India to a Baghdadi Jewish family, and became the first woman to act in an Indian silent film. In the 1930s she started her own film production house, Rubi Pics, way before most female producers in Hollywood broke through. Ginger Rogers (Swing Time, Top Hat)—Look I’ll level with you, I’ve never seen her in a musical and I know that she’s an amazing dancer and she’ll be even hotter when I finally watch Top Hat but I’m not submitting her as a dancer I’m submitting her as an ACTRESS. She needs no introduction! An undeniable powerhouse on the dancefloor, and no less talented an actress. I once watched a compilation of cinema's greatest dance scenes and one of her and Fred Astaire's dances was featured, and one of the talking heads said he pitied her for 'having to keep up with him' - or something to that effect. Bullshit, I cry. Ginger Rogers was his absolute equal, and underplaying her incredible skill is downright criminal. I want the 'Cheek to Cheek' sequence from Top Hat to be permanently burned into my memory.

"Backwards in high heels", as the saying goes (though the pedant in me must point out that she in fact spent her fair share of time leading or dancing side-by-side). One of the earliest twinkle-toed ladies of the silver screen, and in terms of acting/persona, her balance of wide-eyed cuteness and movie-star glamour has never quite been replicated.

we all know her beloved string of musicals with fred but ginger also has an extensive and varied non-fred filmography that she's great in! a few ginger moments that are important 2 me personally ginger singing “we’re in the money” in gold diggers of 1933, complete with a verse in pig latin bc this whole movie is kinda mocking the concept of anyone actually being in the money in 1933; ginger and una merkel singing a verse of “shuffle off to buffalo” in 42nd street, providing some statler & waldorf-esque commentary on newlyweds from the upper berth of a railway car (interesting that belly was apparently a risque word in 1933 - maybe its bc the lyric is innuendo-ing about out of wedlock pregnancies - and that panties was a term for men’s underthings!); a favorite fred & ginger number

Ginger Rogers could do everything! She could sing, dance and act. She was hilarious in comedies, moving in dramatic roles (she won an Oscar for Kitty Foyle in 1940) and absolutely gorgeous!

Listen, no shade to Fred Astaire at all, but she both kept up with him step for step and then later went on to WIN AN OSCAR FOR ACTING. (which he did not.) truly a double threat!!!

One of the best dancers in Hollywood! Her work with Fred Astaire is just incredible.

ONE LINE: "Everything Fred did, Ginger did backwards and in heels" AND THEYRE RIGHT! Rogers was a total dance badass, and a lot of movie buffs know the story, but the Never Gonna Dance number from Swing Time took almost 50 takes, and allegedly by the end of filming it her white shoes had been stained pink because her feet were bleeding. As a note, she looks crazy gorgeous in this number. Watching these two dance is insane. They match up to each other in a way my mom describes as "divine" and she's right. DANCE NUMBERS!

What I would change on That '90s Show:

First, I just want to say that I think the writers wasted a lot of potential and the show could've been a successful spin-off like Frasier was to Cheers.

I strongly disagree with the decision to name Eric and Donna's daughter Leia. Donna would never allow Eric to name their child after a Star Wars character he had sexual fantasies about. Naming their son Luke would have been more believable. Instead, their daughter should have been named Stevie, after Steven Hyde, with a backstory explaining that Hyde died in an accident a few months before she was born. This would address Hyde's absence and honor his character, not the actor. I can separate actors from characters, and Hyde remains my favorite despite the actor's poor life choices.

For casting, a talented actress resembling Topher Grace and Laura Prepon would be ideal for playing their daughter. She should be tall with red hair. Stevie would be the same age as Leia but would be sent by Donna and Eric to stay with Red and Kitty in Point Place due to her rebellious behavior in Chicago. Eric is a professor and Donna is a writer, just as in the show, but Eric's teaching has nothing to do with Star Wars. Donna and Eric are happily married and good parents to their daughter; they're just at their wit's end when it comes to her recent behavior.

Stevie would resemble her mother but dress in all black, embodying the quintessential cynical, snarky '90s alt-girl similar to Daria or Darlene Conner. She would possess an emotionless, acerbic attitude, be highly intelligent, well-read, and a nonconformist, making her parents struggle to understand her. I envision Red and Stevie forming a bond over their shared sense of humor, cynicism, and tendency toward misanthropy, though Red would still be stern with her when necessary. Kitty, being the nurturing one, would have a hard time getting Stevie to open up but wouldn't be judgmental of her, reflecting her open-mindedness from "That '70s Show."

Kelso and Brooke's daughter Betsy should also be a main character and Stevie's friend. Betsy would be bubbly and free-spirited, dragging Stevie along on adventures. Intelligent and well-read due to her librarian mother, Betsy has more fun with her goofball father Kelso, who became a sergeant in the Point Place police department. Betsy and Stevie would become instant best friends, balancing each other out and finding common ground. Betsy would introduce Stevie to her friends, including a boy-next-door romance living in the Pinciotti's old house. Stevie wouldn't have a large group of friends (like Leia or Eric) she'd have Betsy, her neighbor, and maybe one or two of Betsy's friends.

Jackie would distance herself from the gang after losing Hyde and moved away. She'd have a job that requires constant traveling and even get married a few times. Donna is the only one Jackie had kept in touch with.

As for Fez, he can continue with whatever he's doing. I don't care.

Hyde's death would affect everyone to this day and be a major catalyst for why Donna and Eric are so over-protective of Stevie and afraid that her troublemaking could lead her down a tragic path.

Stupid Game!

“Holy shit! What the hell do they want me to do!?"

This was the 17th time you complained about a complicated task in the new action game 'God of War - Ragnarok'.

When Jenna met you, she soon realized her passion for Greek mythology and for the so magnificent god of the Nordic war, on your first date you even mentioned your fanaticism for the franchise. But today was an exaggeration. When the news of the launch came out, you soon bought it in the pre-order, and spent the rest of your time waiting for it. Months and months passed and the moment that you knew that it was released in the PlayStation catalog, you turned on the video game and started your long-awaited journey of accompanying God and his son. The bad thing about this story is that only you knew about your stupid addiction, and why didn't you tell someone about it? You didn't even know, maybe you were afraid of having to abandon your entertainment. Maybe. After all, you don’t know how to deal with it.

But it had already passed dawns, days without sleep, the only time his brain rested being when he fainted from exhaustion. Jenna was really worried about the bag that covered her eyes every time she saw you, but when she confronted you with it, the only thing your girlfriend could receive was a weak smile and the same usual phrase, "I'm fine, when I'm done with the game I swear I'll stay with you the time you want kitty". But this kind smile you had as your brand lasted only for the first 4 times

You understood that you had to maintain a healthy routine for your game in the worst way. Just hurting your family and your girlfriend that you learned to share your time, take care of yourself and think about the feelings of the people you cared about.

“Jenna please listen to me” you approached the door of your shared room leaning your forehead on the cold wood, all your body produced was fear and sadness, you didn't want to have gone that far. Approximately 15 minutes ago Jenna hugged you and asked to you two go to the garden, feel the breeze and the natural aroma of the flowers, something like that. In reality you hadn't paid much attention, after all, you were in the damn game again.

So, you didn't answer, she let you go and repeated the request, you still didn't hear anything at all, and the moment she lost control, you could hear buzzing, enigmatic buzzing that you didn't make a point of deciphering.

But you regretted it the moment you noticed the bang of a knock on the door next to you.

Here you were, begging for your girlfriend's permission so you could try to do something. However, there was nothing you could do, you were wrong in every way. It was you who ignored it when she called her to watch her favorite terror. It was you who was not your award for best actress, when she called you to this special occasion and you neglected what she did for you. Acting like it's nothing

Your option was to compensate Jenna. You had to conquer it again, as in the old days, without any addiction involved.

Your plan started with you asking for a leave of your work, wanting to spend time with Jenna even if she wasn't at home you would be there waiting. Even if she refused to talk to you, you were there for her, regardless of whether she wanted to refuse you, from this day on you would be open to her. You bought flowers and left them at Jenna's bedroom door. You started sleeping on a mattress, without wanting to bother Jenna with your unfortunate presence. Your video game.. it was sent to your little brother Dexter, you knew he had more self-control than you.

After a few days doing the same procedure, she finally sat with you at the table, without any words exchanged, you left Jenna at ease, without wanting to press her to listen to your apologies, you allowed yourself to wait for a sign to start, "Uh, are you okay?" Jenna said breaking the silence, but continuing to look at the food on her plate.

“In fact, I really need to talk to you," you said and raised your face to look at Jenna, straight eyebrows, slightly closed eyes and a certain hesitation on them.

“I don't know if-“ at that moment you couldn't wait any longer, you didn't want to keep looking like a stranger to Jenna. "I really need you, I need to make up for you somehow, I know I shouldn't have stayed that long in that shit. You deserve everything, everything I can offer and everything I can't offer, you deserve someone who gives all this and more, your love, your smile, you are something rare, someone that should be taken care of better than I took care of" you held Jenna's hand, that touch you so much wanted to try again. But you didn't want to make Jenna feel uncomfortable, so you disconnected your fingers quickly, still leaving them on the table.

In irl, she's named after two singers: Gretchen Parlato, and Betty Carter. Etta James actually wasn't the inspiration for her nickname, I just felt it'd fit her. It just came as a plus lol. Also, her original last name was actually Jones, but then I found out there was an actual Etta Jones (a jazz singer, too!) so I had to change it lol.

Name Origins: In universe, I'm keeping it just a bit of a mystery as to how Kat's name was workshopped as it’ll be revealed later. I can say her mother, Gretchen, really loved Anna Karenina. However, she didn’t want her name to be a full on reference to the book. Katerina was born! This isn’t a spoiler cause it’s subtly revealed in the first chapter lol, but her middle name, Anita, is from Anita O'day. Irl, tbh I really liked how Katerina sounded, plus I love characters that have long fancy names but prefer nicknames (thus, Kat). plus, I wanted the name to have Kat in it somewhere so she could eventually get the nickname "Kitty” (no bearing on my own nickname, I'm not projecting that hard) as many blues and jazz singers get that nickname. As mentioned in her mother's profile, her last name comes from Betty Carter.

Despite being older, she views Kat as the older sister in their sisterhood. While more responsible, Kat is much more leader-oriented and outspoken than her. She's even taller than Kat by several inches but due to Kat's loud personality she's always felt small compared to her. She's a little envious of this.

Name Origins: In universe, Georgia wasn't named by her parents. Instead she was named by the nurse who found her, as she was abandoned at a hospital. Smith is more or less a common last name she was assigned, as the nurse didn't want to become too attached to her </3 Unlike the other ladies on this list, irl Georgia wasn't named after any particular singer. She's instead named after a song, the famous "The Devil Went Down to Georgia" due to Kat's perceived influence on her (also "Georgia on My Mind" by Ray Charles is a plus) And yes, this will be mentioned/joked upon... eventually.

Reverse Unpopular Opinion on X-Men: The Last Stand please :D

I knew you would go there. You had to.

So, let me say something nice about the film I loathe most out of this franchise:

It was very good that finally in the third film we actually got Kitty Pryde as a character and not just random-girl-going-through-a-wall. Elliot Page was an excellent casting choice and I know it became a meme and all, but I unironically love the way Kitty stopped Juggernaut for a second. The horrifying implications of Kitty clipping people into walls like glitching videogame characters. A+

The beginning is promising, with Jean's vast powers and poor bb!Warren growing wings, immediately met with hostility from his father. And oh, to have a Danger Room session that includes a Sentinel. Good start to a film! (Please know my first viewing was a triple feature, I was hyped up.) They gave us the Fastball Special with Colossus throwing Wolverine!!!

The angst level of the moment when Mystique loses her power is great. And I can't say anything else about that scene here. But overall I find cure-storylines fascinating, so it was nice the films tackled it. (We do have this wonderful heritage post on tumblr about "sorry Storm, you create weather, this girl kills people by accidentally touching them - this is not the same".) Also absolutely adore Logan's line that boils down to "if you wanna get the cure, go and get it, but do it the fuck for you and not because of a boy". Best friend.

Jean turns people into dust, very cool of her. Get that girl a snickers. And it is nice that all of that is remembered and the emotional consequence of the ending drips into The Wolverine. (I'm happy when Famke Janssen is employed.) Overall mutant powers in action - love it, here for it, always! Fry all the bitches, Storm:

Oh, right, this film gives us Moira MacTaggert, actual geneticist. Before she became a CIA agent in the films and we will not talk about the self-hating mutant she became in the comics. Played by Olivia Williams and I was interested in where that could have gone. Which doesn't count as complaining about wasted potential, it was a genuine last interesting post credit moment. Speaking of actresses in cool roles - honorary mention goes to Shohreh Aghdashloo as Kavita Rao. All the lady scientists, please!

Cillian Murphy had a terrible medical emergency on the Oppenheimer set

In a recent interview, Emily Blunt confessed that her co-star Cillian Murphy had a medical problem while filming. Emily hit Cillian's character many times during filming a sequence in which her character is supposed to smack him, with director Christopher Nolan's approval.

However, the sequence did not make the final edit, but it produced a tense atmosphere on set. Emily observed that Cillian's cheekbones got more visible with each take. Another instance featured Emily handing Cillian a pillow to help him sleep during filming, but he ended up bashing his skull against a bedside table out of excitement. This resulted in a brain injury that necessitated medical attention on-set. Despite these obstacles, both actors gave their best to their characters in the picture, which is a strong contender for the Best Picture Oscar.

While the Oppenheimer cast is close, Cillian Murphy appears to have suffered a medical problem during filming, according to actor Emily Blunt.

In a new interview with The Sun, the Oscar-nominated actress, 40, claimed she and co-star Cillian Murphy, 47, delved deeply into their characters for the picture, which is considered a front-runner for the Best Picture Oscar.

Emily's Kitty is intended to smack Cillian's Oppenheimer during a difficult interaction, which her scene partner and director Christopher Nolan both encouraged her to do numerous times.

Apple White: A Character Study (Chapter 3)

We’re back in business!

I watched Spring Unsprung last night intending to write a separate post about it, but I realized a few minutes in that it wouldn’t make for a good solo post. Apple spends the majority of the special under the topsy-turvy spell, meaning she wasn’t acting of her own free will and can’t really be held responsible for what she did or said (nor can we examine her character). So I’ve decided to combine Spring Unsprung and Way Too Wonderland into one post. That one will be coming soon. For now, please enjoy my write-up of Apple’s character in Chapter 3.

CHAPTER 3

(Side note: why has it taken me until now to realize Raven’s makeup is the best in the show? Suits her perfectly.)

(Side note: if Ashlynn lateness curse is tied to noon, not midnight, how was that ever going to work with her story? Was the ball gonna be a brunch? An afternoon tea party?)

I think it’s interesting (and a good character choice) to have Apple help Ashlynn work around the rules of her destiny. While Briar is ready to yank the stepsisters off the stage, Apple uses her clever nature to make the best of the situation. But she never tells Ashlynn that she shouldn’t have to wait on her stepsisters, especially since they’re so mean to her. This also makes me wonder (a bit off topic) why Ashlynn, now a rebel, has to listen to what they say. Is it a magical constraint? Is it learned behavior that she’s having trouble letting go of?

I still don’t know what to make of Apple and Ashlynn’s friendship. I know that Apple has been close friends with Briar and Blondie for a long time, and Ashlynn and Briar have known each other since nursery (rhyme) school, but it seems like Ashlynn and Apple didn’t have a lot of interaction until they started at Ever After High. Adding the strain on their friendship that occurred during True Hearts’ Day (and Apple’s mini-feud with Briar during Thronecoming), it’s surprising to see them chumming it up so much in these episodes—and that Apple was the first person Ashlynn wanted to take with her. Perhaps she was being nice because Apple was right there?

Junior year! Arguably Apple’s worst. She was immature as a sophomore, but the events of Dragon Games are tough to beat. Let’s see how her character changes after summer break.

Apple volunteering Raven to work on the yearbook instead of asking her first…hm…

I can’t fault Apple for not wanting to look bad in the yearbook. Have you taken a look inside yours from high school or college? That shit looks BAD. And she’s supposed to be the future queen of Ever After. That’s prime gossip rag material right there.

(Side note: Raven’s response to seeing Poppy and Duchess flail through the air was to take a picture instead of using her powers to help them lol)

(Side note: I must point out that in my story Poppy and Sparrow used to be a thing, and now Duchess and Sparrow…Poppy definitely seems like the kind of person to be chill about those sorts of things. Not Duchess though 😂)

(Side note: Bunny and Alistair really got their own episode 🙄 thankfully Kitty has had enough of hetero nonsense and is our sole source of entertainment here)

(Another side note, I know: do Maddie and Kitty not feel any existential dread at the fact that the narrators can alter and rewind their lives? Make them do things they don't want to do? Change their relationships with the people around them? Isn't that a gross violation of their personhood?)

CONCLUSION

You can see instances of Apple slowly starting to adapt her Royal ideology to be a better friend, which is good. I don't know what would have sparked this change over summer break, but I'm sure people like Ashlynn, Briar, and Raven really appreciated it. It seems like she was on an upward trend until the Big Event of junior year, which is a little heartbreaking.
