Drabble: Kittywalker

It was a quiet evening in Gravesfield. Hunter was peacefully sleeping on the couch. The perfect opportunity for Luz and Vee to do something mischievous. Drawing kitty whiskers on his face! Luz and Vee couldn't surpress a little grin.

Later, a certain starboy with fluffy lavender hair was floating into the living room. He couldn't help but chuckle softly as he noticed his big brother's painted face. Colli drew some whiskers into his own face to match with Hunter when he woke up.

There's a lot of posts circulating about the dangers of cats going outside alone, and as someone who used to own an ex-stray 'outdoor' cat when I was younger, I can honestly attest to the fact that the great outdoors is a threat to both your cat and to ecosystems. Cats don't only hunt for food; they hunt for fun, and they can actually single-handedly destroy entire ecosystems. They can also get run over, attacked by a larger predator or another cat, or get sick from a wild prey item like mine did, and much, much more.

So, I figured I'd give some solutions to people who feel bad about keeping their cats inside 24/7 like I do. Cats tread the line between domestic pet and wild animal a fair bit and if your cat feels more comfortable outside then here's some things you can do to make sure your cat, and things around your cat, are safe.

1) Use a harness.

Perhaps the easiest one is to train your cat to walk with a harness and leash and go for walks with it. It's preferable to start getting it used to the harness by walking it around indoors with it on, and then take it outside with it later. This will give both you and your cat exercise and will keep it out of harm's away from busy roads, wild animals, and things that could make it get sick. You can also use a cat stroller (yes, they make strollers for cats) if all your cat really needs is some fresh air and sunlight.

2) Build a catio.

Have a patio or balcony that you don't use much? Well, it can be repurposed to let your cat some fresh air in a safe, enclosed environment. Catios should give your cat plenty of room to climb around and play, as well as food, water, and a litterbox easily accessible. They're usually enclosed with a cage that they can't squeeze through. Premade catios also exist if you don't have the time, money, or skills to make one yourself, such as the Kittywalk.

3) Kittyproof your backyard.

Put up a tall metal fence so that your cat cannot escape the yard by jumping or climbing over it. Chain link fences won't work for this, mind you, as a cat could climb that relatively easily. Check if climbable objects like trees and furniture are near the fence, or if there's spaces in the fence a cat could squeeze through. Remove these objects and block these spaces, even if it takes cutting some branches or even an entire tree. As a general rule, shelter your cat from the elements such as storms or snow. Provide them with a kittydoor if they're especially active at night.

It's best to do what is the best for your cat, and that includes keeping it safe. If the 3 given alternatives would be undesirable or undoable, then keep your cat inside instead. You need to put effort into keeping your pets safe, and if you're not willing to do that for your cat, then yes. You are a bad pet owner like little 9-year-old me was. A pet being "independent" is not an excuse for negligence.
