Random zk rant but everyone I know in real life loves zutara. Like I was talking about ATLA with my friend from Spanish class the other day and I made some comment about how I didn’t like a lot of the romances in the show. She was the one to bring up zutara first 😭 (And I had to pretend that I wasn’t feral and been obsessed for 4 years now). I’ve only had one encounter with someone who’s anti zutara irl and she was a very online person. It’s so different from when I hop on TikTok and people are mass hating zutara while simultaneously shipping zu/kka. Any zutara edit has so much hate under it and I just don’t get it 😭 I’ve seen hate on instagram too but it’s honestly the worst on TikTok. The worst part is that TikTok’s “not interested” button is useless because the users throw every random hashtag on their video.

Z*kka is a very good example I like to use when I talk about how trend, timing and tropes effect fandoms that you don't see happen in older fandoms

The ATLA renaissance happened during the same time the Voltron trainwreck happened. At the same time, certain tropes like opposites attract, blue/red gays etc are insanely popular. Almost every big thing falls into this easy category of who fits who in their incorrect quotes or popular tropes and ship dynamic.

And Z*kka fits the bill. Silly/Serious? Check. Conventionally attractive guys? Check. Blue/Red? Check. On paper, they sound like any other popular ships that technically speaking would make at least a decent ship.

Except they don't. Because they're from a 3 seasons show where they canonically don't have that much meaningful interaction, barely any acknowledgement of each other, and they just don't have chemistry. They DON'T. Just because they LOOK like they fit on the surface level doesn't mean they actually do. Sometimes opposites don't attract. Sometimes the characters who fall easily into a ship dynamic aren't actually compatible.

The ship is solid proof that modern fandoms these days prioritize surface level things over what canon actually gives them. I UNDERSTAND why some people like z*kka, but it DOES NOT deserve the level of popularity it receives! And the fact it became one of the most popular ships in ATLA because the voltron fans project kl*nce into the ship is IMO disheartening. They already choose what they wish to see instead of appreciating what these characters got and who they actually connect with in canon.

I know I sound pretentious, but I really can't stand these kinds of fans because of how much they REFUSE to engage in canon. Tropes are nice. Having preferences is not a crime. But actively forcing your own vision into canon just because they fit your tastes in the most shallow way possible is just sad. Why bother engage in any new media then? Why not actually pick up something that actively fits your taste?

I seriously had no idea where Zukka even came from until recently.

It wasn't a thing when the show was airing and then suddenly it just exploded out of nowhere. I was so baffled. I was like "why this?" Of all the slash ships people could have latched onto. Jetko is right there. Hell, even Zukaang and Sokka/Aang make way more sense.

You're so right, people just base everything off """vibes""" or aesthetics, or just jump on the bandwagon when a ship/headcanon gets popular without giving it any real thought. And because Zukka is just a copy+paste version of Klance, they just wind up wildly ooc and it's like they're two entirely different characters. I have to ask myself if these people even like Zuko or Sokka independently...

And for the record, I don't think you sound shallow at all. The enforcement of popular headcanons as canon is a problem in all fandoms, but it's especially bad in this one.

If it sounds like I'm pointing the finger solely at Zukka shippers, I'm not. Zutara shippers are just as bad, if not worse. As are those who shove the idea of lesbian Azula down everyone's throats.

It's just fucking exhausting.

Ship whatever you want. Headcanon whatever you want. Just stop torturing all of us with it.

i can't tell what's worse: when multishippers tag both ships in their "critical" posts or when normies tag kataang in their..... anti kataang posts. because why did i just see three posts tagged with zutara in the kataang tag. why did i just see a post talking about they would probably ship z*tara if not z*kka, tagged kataang. it doesn't need to be "tumblr etiquette" i think you just need to have a brain not to do it because what audience are you trying to reach here? why announce when you're shitting all over our floor?

I feel like I've criticized Z*tara a million times, so I'll talk about something else instead.

Z*kka - where did this even come from? It's so random yet seems insanely popular, almost on the level of Z*tara now. They're like brothers and they weren't even friends until near the end of the show. It amazes me how popular this one got and out of nowhere, basically I suspect just because the fandom thinks they're the two most attractive male characters in the main cast (Aang is too young and they think he's ugly anyway, they don't care for Jet or Haru).

Personality-wise I also don't get it. I mean yeah they don't argue as much as Z*tara do but even if one of them was a girl, I don't see at all how fandom thinks they'd work as a romance.

It's another cursed fire/water or red/blue pairing in ATLA for me.

So, given the full bootleg of Katie Knight-Adams is around now, has your opinion of her changed, or is she as bad as she was in the excerpts that were previously available?

...Oh right, I have a million new people I need to review. I guess now's as good a time as any to start on that.

To answer your question from the get-go, has my opinion changed? Yes... but also no. Watching Katie Knight-Adams in full feels a bit like being on a rollercoaster that's completely in the dark: I never know what she's going to do and I always feel like I'm being blindsided because sometimes I'll like it and sometimes it'll be the weirdest thing ever.

Also, as per the filmer, I cannot post any screenshots or gifs from the video, so just take my word for it that she's doing funky stuff. Speaking of the filmer, I should state that any criticism of KKA (as I'm going to call her from now on) is not a criticism of them; the video is really great! It's not their fault that they happened to film one of my least favorite Christines, after all. And honestly even if I don't like her, I'm still really grateful to have full video of her, or full video of anybody that I would otherwise only hear on audio.

All right, everything accounted for, onto the actual review.

So just from the start, I can already see some of that... wonkiness that throws me off with KKA, and it's that she clearly has a decent grasp on Christine, but her acting is so over-the-top. Her heart's in the right place, but even in that moment when Meg volunteers her up for 'Think of Me', KKA is just overdoing the scared, shy Christine aspect. It doesn't feel natural. On the other hand, she really loves stroking and grabbing hold of Meg's arm, so Christine/Meg win.

Having said all that, once she gets into 'Think of Me' fully, she's quite good. She's smiling, she's thrilled to sing, she's doing everything right, it's quite pleasant to watch her. KKA clearly knows how to act, but it feels like she doesn't know sometimes when to pull back a little. Now is also as good a time as any to talk about her vocals, and they are... fine, for the most part, certainly an improvement on her first run, though those high notes are clearly still a struggle for her and, honestly, kind of made me flinch a couple of times. This continued into 'Angel of Music', where KKA was fine, until she had to hit some of those floated notes, which... oof. And since this video was with Earl Carpenter during his run where his high notes were also not great, this sometimes made for painful listening.

Also of note is that when KKA is with Meg, she is a smiling, happy girl, grabbing hands and stroking her arm, and when she gets Raoul's letter she gets all excited when she reads "Little Lotte!", but when the Phantom congratulates her, she's completely blank-faced. This also continues in other Phantom-centric scenes (for example, she goes into "hypno-Christine" mode and is totally blank during 'The Mirror'). So I think I know who KKA's Christine wants to go with. (The answer is Meg, obviously. But Raoul is a close second.)

Heading into 'Little Lotte', though, it starts to fall apart. KKA's Christine is clearly quite happy to be with Raoul, but again, it's too much. She's laughing too hard, she's gyrating her body so badly, she's over-emphasizing everything, and it all comes off forced. It all culminates with the funniest, "Things have changed, Raoul!" and just goes on from there. I've already gone over 'The Mirror', the title song, 'Music of the Night', and 'Stranger Than You Dreamt It' before, so I won't go over it again, except to say: orgasm face.

To be honest, I did wonder if this was intentional on KKA's part: was she deliberately playing up the little girl aspect when she was with Raoul because, I dunno, childhood memories and all that, or trying to show her Christine was borderline hysterical whenever she starts acting too scared? But as I said above, that didn't quite jive because we have other scenes where KKA's acting is quite ludicrous and sometimes perfectly fine, and it's with those same characters (e.g. she acts totally over-the-top with Meg in one scene and then quite balanced in the next, she's utterly hysterical with Raoul in one scene and then calm in the next, she's completely blank with the Phantom but then right in 'Music of the Night', she pulls the orgasm face).

All right, skipping ahead to Il Muto. Unfortunately, I don't get to see much of KKA here, but what I do see is fine, presumably because she got all that overacting out of her system for now. This continues when we pick up again on the rooftop, though to be fair, this is one scene where overacting would actually work, given Christine's mental state. Of course, we also get the suicide blocking for this scene, sigh, but oh well. And yes, KKA is much more obvious about this than Rachel Barrell, holding both arms out and clearly looking down, and then jumping back in shock when Raoul calls her name. Also, that trend of good acting from KKA? Starting to go away. She's not too bad in 'All I Ask of You', but she was starting to jerk her body around in a way that looked odd; it felt like she wanted to look scared or, I dunno, turned on by Raoul, but it only seemed like she'd run several laps around the rooftop and was breathing hard. Which is too bad because David Shannon is pretty good with her, and I do think that KKA's Christine is actually in love with Raoul, but it just feels like she's trying too hard to show it.

Okay, Act 2 is here! Nothing much to say about 'Masquerade' or most of 'Notes II', KKA is fine here, though honestly she doesn't have too much to do. It isn't until 'Twisted Every Way' that the overacting comes back out - it honestly looks like she's trying to punch Raoul with how hard she's grabbing onto him and shaking him. It kind of sucks because she has some good ideas here - she clutches at her face when talking about the Phantom and grabs her throat, she rocks back and forth - but it's so overdone it comes off comedic. Also I'm enjoying her voice less and less as the show goes on; she's starting to sound strained and squeaky, possibly because she's tiring from singing a score that's out of her range. It continues with 'Wishing' - I like that she covers her ears at one point in the beginning, but then she follows up by over-emphasizing her lines and gesturing too much, though interestingly she calmed down by the end.

See, this is what I mean by a rollercoaster in the dark. I never know what's going to happen next with her!

You ever seen 'Point of No Return' acted too sexily? Because that's basically what was going on with KKA in that scene, just over-the-top facial expressions, like she wanted everyone in the audience to know, "I'm turned on! Look how turned on I am." Again, there's plenty of decent ideas in there, it's just executed so badly. Also, the Phantom really has to drag her back out onto the stage when she tries to flee; KKA does not want to be with him.

I've already gone over 'Final Lair' before and I don't want to again, it's pretty much the same as everything I said before. KKA caps off her confusing performance by crying in the most comical fashion during the ring returning scene and then running off. Which led me to wonder what her interpretation of Christine even was. Is she afraid of the Phantom? Turned on by him? Sad for him? All of the above?

So overall, how do I feel about her? Honestly... no clue. KKA's Christine was a mix of decent ideas, sometimes done well and sometimes executed in the poorest fashion imaginable, with a loose and confusing interpretation of the character when it comes to the Phantom (with Raoul, and especially Meg, she was on more solid ground). Oh, and I think I liked her vocals less this time around. I will say that what people consider overacting is subjective, and what I find to be overkill might not be the same for everyone.

Having said all that, I legitimately have no clue whether I should move her a spot up because she was actually pleasantly watchable in some scenes, keep her where she is because so much other stuff was still so bad, or knock her down a spot just for confounding me. I'll think on it a bit, but for now, I'll keep her where she is.

One of the worst things about ATLA and its annoying fandom is white people once again see real cultures as fun fandom things, so you have all these racists, Orientalists, and cultural tourists treating Asian and Indigenous cultures as fun aesthetics to play around with, including using CLOSED PRACTICES to get backpats for omg you are so good at culture!! compliments and talking over people who have criticisms about how their cultures were portrayed by white creators.

Like, I just saw fanart of K*tara 'inspired' by real Inuit culture, and it's well-drawn, but the artist, who is not Inuit, drew Inuit face tattoos on her, which is a closed practice that I remember a lot of Inuit fans said that if you're not Inuit, you should not be drawing those tattoos on the W*ter Tr*be characters, especially when they have meanings that only the community knows and doesn't share with outsiders, again bc closed practice - and this artist even admitted to just drawing random squiggles, basically, so it's racist both in terms of engaging with a closed practice and reducing a meaningful practice to random doodles.

There's also the fact that Indigenous peoples have been saying for YEARS how racist it is that the show depicts the Inuit-inspired characters as uniquely super misogynistic when Inuit culture is more egalitarian, and it's shitty that white creatives chose to depict the darker-skinned Natives as more misogynistic than the light-skinned cultures that were historically more sexist than the Inuit, but everyone keeps doubling down on how S*kka being a cartoon misogynist is so essential that it needs to be kept to protect the sanctity of their annoying cartoon to protest N*tflix, like idk maybe care more about actual POC than your cartoon made by two Orientalist white men?

And of course that they STILL like to make that one (1) scene where Asami was angry at Korra supposedly problematic, and that Mako is somehow the one who actually cares about Korra... ugh...

The only somehow new argument now is that it is somehow bad how TLOK comics supposedly ignore the relationship between Korra and Mako.

As we know, Korra shouldn't be focused on her relationship with her actual girlfriend and instead be more in contact with her ex-boyfriend, because as we know, all people should stay in close contact with their exes, and ignore their actual partners, for reasons...

It seems like in 2014 there was sort of an even split between Korrasami and m*k*rra but I think the latter has fallen off. Like I'll come across z*t*r* randomly (again not as much as before) but m*k*rra is rare, at least in the case that you don't actively seek it out.

I like to think tastes have matured over time. Because back when LOK was running the only ships there dominating the fics, Deviantart, Tumblr, etc. were the aforementioned Z, M and T*kka (all of which, if it isn't clear, I don't like). All the best artwork was dedicated to these, the volume of fics outnumbered those for the canon couples, and poor Mai and Suki got pushed to the side, with poor Mai getting the worst of it.

I'm pleased that Maiko, Sukka and Kataang are finally getting their moment to shine these days. Again either tastes matured or the next generation of viewers didn't align themselves with those who wept when the moody firebender didn't hook up with the waterbender.

Speaking of moody firebender and waterbender, let's talk Korra.

2013: Korrasami is considered the "crackship". Book 2 puts the kabash on m*k*rra because let's face it: M*ko is a boring character. Cardboard has more personality. He is there to fulfill the stereotype of moody firebender and have cool firebending skills that animators can have with. Want something on fire? He's your guy.

Other than its the trope of tragic backstory that have no bearing on the plot whatsoever. In fact, M*ko doesn't have any bearing on the plot.

M*ko & Bolin find their family: no impact.

M*ko & Bolin have a dynamic with Kai because of similar backgrounds: lasts an episode or two. Kai interacts with Jinora for the rest of the series.

M*ko is Wu's bodyguard: aside from the kidnapping episode, which is a great episode, this subplot goes nowhere apart from some "comedy"

It's a shame that the roles weren't reversed. Firebender is the comic relief and the Earthbender is the serious one.

But alas we're stuck with off-brand Diet Zuko.

2014: The season that changed everything: Book 3.

Book 4: This is where the fractures started to form. With Book 3, those that had been routing for Korrasami (for clarification I jumped on that train in Book 2 because M*ko was such a prick in that season) found validation and with the finish line in sight, there were those that somehow believed that a relationship that soured years prior was somehow going to mend itself. As you mentioned, lack of communication between the two and a lack of trust. M*ko doesn't seem to trust Korra a lot until toward the end of Book 4.

Then the finale aired and something happened that really didn't occur when ATLA ended: Mike and Bryan wrote a post that stated definitely that Korra and Asami were together. Not just "good friends". No "up to interpretation." Korra and Asami are a couple.

Of course after LOK, there was more LGBTQ stories and characters in TV going forward, with varying degrees of success as is all media.

There are some idiotic posts that criticize Korrasami while viewing it from the perspective of having shows like She-Ra, Owl House, etc. for the past couple years. But rightly those criticisms are pushed back by those who know how much of a risk it was to even get on the air.
