We focus a lot on Aziraphale’s kindness in giving away his sword, but Adam and Eve make a really interesting choice there too. Because they’re no longer being chased out by an angel with a flaming sword. They have the sword. And sure, the angel probably has other ways to kick them out if they won’t leave. Maybe, fresh off God’s wrath, they know better than to try.
Or maybe, having tasted the fruit of knowledge, they realize they’re starving. Maybe they peer out the hole and see a vast and frightening and beautiful world, and they have to have all of it — lions included. Maybe it looks like a desert, maybe the first few steps are terrifying, but maybe they now have the power to create the world they want to live in (to be like God, knowing good and evil). Maybe they don’t want to stay in their safe, tiny little Eden. Maybe they want to be out.
So anyway, when Crowley and Aziraphale leave the bookshop-

he was made from his rib
“I wrote the first 5000 words of Good Omens. And I had the protagonist be a demon called Crowley - who was a demon, but he was a lot like Aziraphale. And what Terry did, when he did his draft of this, was to split that character into two. He’d […] gone: Actually, let’s have the cool half of that and the awkward half of that and split them off, into the good and into the evil. And there’s still that strange feeling that it’s one person.”

I don’t think we’ve ever seen you draw knight of dawn before 🤔 what are your thoughts about him? Or take?
I've drawn him a couple of times, just really little/in the background. but I should draw him more, I love this guy a lot! I have many, many thoughts about him and the way he parallels Silver...and also I think it is extremely funny that his ghost is stuck in a ring. especially considering where that ring has been for the last 16-ish years.

What Are We Missing in the Story of the Garden of Eden?
Why did God place the tree of the knowledge of good and evil in the garden and forbid Adam to east it?
Once again, I am reading the epic of Eden by Sandra Richter. She takes the orthodox, traditional position that Eden was perfect, man fell, bringing God’s creation down with him, and God is redeeming man with creation so that man will live forever in perfection, again, after redemption is complete. I write recently, poising the question, Was the Garden of Eden Really Perfect? I am leaning in the…

Entirely perfect weather AGAIN for Tadfield
It’s silly, but I’m so happy to see that Adam can, canonically, still fix the weather.

there are a lot of evil people in the world and a lot of darkness in the world and so it’s very important for me to stress that now more than ever is the time to spread kindness and compassion. combat the evil by not only not partaking in it, but actively refuting it. destroy the notion that being compassionate or generous or kind to someone is uncool or embarrassing or even scary. be the change you want to see. start a chain reaction. positivity only breeds more positivity. do an act of kindness for someone so that that person who is too afraid to do it themselves can see you, realize that they’re not alone, and perhaps sheepishly follow your example. and then the next person who is too afraid but sees that person can do the same. when bad news comes out about bad people or horrible atrocities in the world it’s such an easy impulse to despair, and obviously it’s important to feel what you need to feel. grieve. be angry. be sorrowful. be empathetic. but dust off your pants and get up and be a part of a chain reaction that, no matter how small the scale, and spread compassion and love and care. all the reasons why you might not—“it’s hard! it’s scary! people will make fun of me! it’s useless because there’s too much evil!” are all grade A arguments as to why you should. you have no idea how many people you could inspire to do the same. even if it doesn’t get you anyway far, you can at least say you have the nobility of trying. please choose love and please choose life. you are worth loving and you are worth inspiring others to love

I also love how that scene implies that Aziraphale is already Reading Too Much (affectionate).
Because he’s read the plans for humans, right? And there are a couple possibilities for what’s in those plans:
They don’t mention the (human) Fall. Humans get permanent access to the tree of life and should therefore live forever. But also we’re ending the universe in 6000 years :)))) don’t worry about it :)))))))))
They do mention the (human) Fall. How will they fall? :)))) don’t worry about it :))))))))
Was the angelic Fall explicitly laid out in the plans? Possibly (in which case, yikes!), but it didn’t have to be. If it’s left out, the gaps themselves are incredibly ominous.
So based on the plans that he’s read, Aziraphale doesn’t just know angels could get in trouble, he knows they WILL get in trouble.
Like, we side-eye Crowley for yelling at his plants if they’re not ✨perfect✨, as if Aziraphale’s giant collection of books of prophecy isn’t also about his trauma from the Fall.
Crowley sees God as capricious. Aziraphale is trying to believe that she isn’t. So it must have been the reading that saved him! If everyone else had just read everything, they would have known how to avoid falling!
(as a former evangelical myself, this is big Biblical literalism energy. No, God doesn’t suck! You just have to know all the possible things that can make him mad and avoid doing them!! It’s easy!!! I can never stop reading!!!!)
something new about aziraphale that i’m getting emotional over on this fine night (no one is shocked): i cannot stop thinking about the first scene of season 2. specifically i cannot stop thinking about the fact that even then, in a moment where both he and crowley even looked younger due to their innocence / lack of doubt or questioning just yet, aziraphale is already doing somersaults to worry for those around him. he doesn’t even KNOW this angel, and the idea that crowley could get in trouble for asking questions shouldn’t occur to him yet, but he’s still so burdened by anxieties and doubts for other peoples’ well-being and conditioned to protect others at his own expense (not to mention eerily close to seeing through Heaven for what it is). aziraphale is so fundamentally good, worrying about other people and caring about them before the very idea that bad things could happen to a fellow angel SHOULD have ever crossed his mind in the first place. and to me that disproves all notions that aziraphale is naive, because he’s been tragically aware since before the Beginning— and before crowley. which makes moments like the post-Job “what does that make me” scene even sadder because by all accounts, if aziraphale was familiar with what it’s like to doubt and worry before the Fall even happened, before he ever should have known what those things were, then he should have been one of the angels to fall, right? Wondering and doubting and worrying about things leads to a Fall, right? Only he didn’t. In a world in which there’s a line dividing doubtless, brainwashed, “happy” angels from doubtful, too-curious-for-their-own-good demons, aziraphale might just be the loneliest being in existence. he’s quite literally the sole person (that we know of) who stayed an angel but is forced to carry a burden that never should have been his, that NOBODY around him in Heaven has to carry. and he can’t ask about it because now he knows for sure where asking questions leads you, but he probably doesn’t understand why he has to carry that burden in the first place. the one he’s been carrying it since before Earth was even created.

I think this is partially why he’s so intense about collecting books.
Because… look, it’s possible that the same files that described humans marveling at the stars also said they would be wiped out in 6000 years. It’s possible an angel would be given access to both pieces of information. But it seems enormously negligent* to do that — either there are some jarring, unexplained gaps, or the files would have to allude to the Fall (and the moment you start talking about the human fall, how do you avoid talking about fallen angels?).
So Aziraphale probably read through some plans he didn’t strictly need to do his job. Collected and cross-referenced the info across multiple projects.
And because he did that, he sort of knew about the Fall(s) before they happened. Maybe not in great detail, but enough to be nervous when talking about suggestion boxes.
Aziraphale definitely likes reading, but it’s also majorly saved his ass at least once (Armageddon) and probably twice (avoiding the Fall). Most likely, it will save his ass a third time during the Second Coming.** No wonder he hoards books, especially books of prophecy. He knows from experience that he needs that information.
*or chaotic, which to be fair is right up God’s alley
**…because he’s from a book and being screenwritten by an author, so you just KNOW the Power of Books™️ will win out lmao. There is no more beloved novel trope than “hero solves critical problem by reading a bunch” (the thing I, the reader, am also doing! oh wow!)
I've heard some theories that Angel!Crowley was working with the Book of Life, so I thought I'd share this well-timed screen grab.
The book says, "Nebula 231,280." 281? Hard to see clearly.
Tumblr media
So, no, that is not the Book of Life.
However, it does imply that Heaven has a library. An enormous one, at that, if every piece of creation has its own book.
Aziraphale is going to sniff out these books in Heaven like a pig to truffles, I tell you.
