I saw that you said that dutchies are the only herders for you. I am getting a dutchie and I think it would be very interesting to hear why you would get one in stead of a malinois or a gsd.

Mostly- I apprenticed with a mondio club that was like 99% KNVP line dutchies and liked them a lot. The thing with this type of breeding is that most of them are not... actually purebred the way most people think of it. My mentor’s dog was actually a dutch x mal, came out brindle, got called and registered as a dutch, end of story. He was bred with a GSD and produced a bunch of brindle-point puppies- those are dutchies too. Those puppies were bred with a mal and produced half brindle and half red- there were both “mal” and “dutch” puppies in that litter. Very common with that breeding style and so the focus is less on “breed” and more on “can the dog do the work”, which is definitely something I can get behind.

When I asked if they thought I could handle one, they said honestly their dutches were pretty similar to Creed and my ideals for a dog. The mals were more high strung, the GSDs more prickley bastards, etc. BUT once again, this is breeding where the dog’s breed is labeled based on what it looks the most like, NOT on actual purebred standards, so it’s possible to produce a ton of different “breeds” within one litter... and so it’s hard to say if the red puppies were high strung because they were red and mals are red so they’re “malinois”... or if they’re high strung because their owners expected them to be because they were labeled as mals.

Well, given that Logan is out of KNVP lines and KNVP is notorious for mixing breeds in order to create the best working dog possible, and that he's the only one in his litter that looks the way he does, it's actually highly likely that Logan is, in fact, a combination of breeds. Do you know if there are any breeds that are very similar to dobes? I know they're ubique in a lot of ways, but I have always adored their almost obsessive love for their people, their clinginess, their size, their intensity, etc. My family has always had dobes, and even the well bred ones all died before 10, and most died before 7. I'll probably have another anyway, but I'm currently just not ready for a dobe, so I figured I'd ask a more dog savvy dobe owner. Thank you, and btw, Creed is lovely

None identical, though many dobe people say boxers and whippets are a fairly good substitute. Boxers in my opinion are more clownish, while whippets are more sensitive. Quite a few (knvp line, mondio competing) dutch shepherd and mal people have told me Creed is a lot like a beginner-friendly version of their dogs, and if I can handle him then I shouldn't have a problem getting along with their dogs.
