Pastrami mazemen from @ramenkodaiko on Sacramento. Oh man, there was a lot of pork belly done pastrami style. There was shaved cabbage, smoked cheese, and caraway seeds. It was all the elements of a pastrami sandwich - and it worked. But too salty though for me. #sutoadventures (at Ramen Kodaiko) https://www.instagram.com/p/CYTAHDvLU20/?utm_medium=tumblr

“The Laughing Typhoon” -- Soundtrack Instruments
This one’s solely because a seemingly known trivia is “There are never more than four instruments playing at a time”.
Since there are obviously more than four instruments, I got curious as to how many there are and what they are. (Which isn’t easy for someone like me who doesn’t dabble much in music to really find out.)
I sent the track to my brother for help on finding an easy way to dissect it, since he knows more about music than I do-- came back to my computer fifteen minutes later and found he had a chunk of it worked out.
Obviously, if any other musically-inclined people have any hints, I’d love to know what your thoughts are!
In order of appearance:
Percussion, 0:00 / Shamisen, 0:00 / Piano, 0:14 / Bass, 0:20 / Synth, 0:20 / Brass, 0:33 / more Synth, 1:00 // Track loops to 0:20 at 1:14
Couldn’t specifically identify the brass (maybe a trombone?)
Couldn’t specifically identify the taiko drums (some type of kodaiko?)
Kotsuzumi once at 0:24, and then twice at 0:56
Possibly a den-den-daiko at 0:34 and 0:41 (type of rattle drum; considered a kid’s toy, would fit with Owen)
(There’s something in there that sounds like cymbals too)
(Maybe a sort of jingle ring or bell stick, as well?)
My brother thinks that the “never more than four instruments” might NOT intentional and was mostly a happy coincidence-- he’s pretty sure you can hear shamisen, piano, synth, bass, and percussion playing on two notes at 0:29, and can’t really think of a reason to go full orchestra on those two notes.

Days like this call for ramen, ice cream macaroon sandwiches, and sake juice boxes. 🍜 @ramenkodaiko has definitely become one of my favorite spots this year. #spicymushroompaitan #gingerelizabethchocolates #luckydogsake (at Ramen Kodaiko) https://www.instagram.com/p/B5jn-ySBAMcHz9Tun9Sihgyaf4rGB6mNXJBloY0/?igshid=14qxqm3mqyjhp

Yellow Days Sultry Vocal Proves “It’s Real Love” We’re Feeling
Tumblr media
Photo: Kodaiko Bayashi
England-based songsmith Yellow Days is not one to hold his emotions back. The young artist (born George van den Broek) has been channeling his feelings into music since the age of 16, recording from an impromptu studio in his parents’ garden shed and eventually gaining notoriety for his confessional songwriting and prolific production. Now 19, van den Broek returns with his single “It’s Real Love” to explore his romantic side.
The track opens with an intoxicatingly supple bass groove, creating a lush canvas on which Yellow Days paints his seductive vocal. Throughout the song, the artist layers in coats of heady synthesizers and hallucinogenic guitars, dyeing the song with ever-more vibrant colors and textures that reflect the singers developing emotions. This tension peaks in the chorus, with Yellow Days repeating, “Babe, it’s real love” in an aphrodisiacal drawl that will have your heart melting.
Candid emotionality is something that fans have come to expect from Yellow Days. In addition to the amorous feelings associated with “It’s Real Love,” the artist has addressed topics like mental health and wellbeing in his other songs. "I can talk about my feelings 'til the sun goes down,” says van den Broek on his songwriting. “I love to just assess my own human condition; why I act a certain way. That debate constantly goes on in my music.”
Recently, Yellow Days has been working with RCA Records to curate his full-length debut. Though it may have been recorded in a decidedly more spacious studio than his parents’ shed, you can be sure to expect the same poignant sensitivity from Broek that captured your heart from the start. Get a taste for what’s to come with Yellow Days’ single “It’s Real Love” here:

Day 4: The 21-day Composition Challenge
Happy 4th of July!
Today I chose the following quest for the 21-day Composition Challenge day 4 :
Drum Machine: Write an entire piece using ONLY unpitched percussion instruments (that means no xylophones, pianos, etc).
I actually decided to choose this one last night. I heard the sound of fireworks last night (somebody was already cerebrating 4th of July then!), it reminded me of Japanese Matsuri (festival). I grew up in Sumida area in Tokyo, which is famous for the Sumida River Fireworks Festival. Also, since my mom is from Aomori prefecture, I grew up with Nebuta Matsuri as well. For me, Summer = Fireworks = MATSURI!!
Anyway, to create this track, I decided to use as many Japanese percussion sounds I own as possible. Here’s the list of the instruments I used :
大太鼓 (Taiko)
小太鼓 (Kodaiko, Small Taiko)
締太鼓 (Shime -Daiko)
中太鼓(Chu-Daiko, Medium Taiko)
桶胴太鼓 (Okedo-Daiko)
ちゃんちき(Chanchiki)
手拍子(Tebyoushi)
拍子木(Hyoushigi)
I went big and used them all, but usually they don’t use this many instruments in Matsuri. Also they’ll have melodic instruments like Fue’ (Japanese flutes) as well.
Here’s my Day 4 track : Matsuri Daiko (Festival Taiko)
I hope you enjoy! Let me know what you think!
