Akito had liked Sana. He had shown her that he liked her, and she hadn’t reciprocated. That was okay, that was normal with first crushes. Things were better now, she had Kamura. He was Fuka’s boyfriend now. Sure, they hadn’t gone anywhere without Tsuyoshi and Aya. Sure, all they did was walk home together. Sure, sometimes there were quiet moments where Fuka would look at him, and he knew that she wanted him to kiss her. And sure, he had continually pretended not to notice because his heart wasn’t in it. Fuka could be kind of a nag. She had really high expectations for herself and how she conducted herself, and those expectations were also leveled at Akito. But still, he would take the nagging over the insane babbling and unhinged arguments. He spent the rest of the day trying to keep his mind off of the auburn pigtails that were just a few doors down. - Chapters 28 through 51 of the Kodomo no Omocha Manga from Akito's perspective. ▶️🎉1 Year on YouTube ▶️ 🎉

Today marks my 1 year anniversary of being a YouTuber. When I started creating Kodocha videos, I never expected to make so many new friends and gain so many subscribers who feel just as passionately as I do about the series.

Thank you ALL.

Not only did I become a YouTuber last year, but I also became a wife and an official resident of a new state in the US. 2022 was a big, and difficult year for me. With all the changes and adjustments going on around me, it was comforting knowing that I had the Kodocha community to go back to each day. 

So what inspired me to create a Kodocha channel? There are many reasons, so let’s talk about them! First of all, Kodocha is my favorite animanga series, and sadly there isn’t many Kodocha content creators online. However, the ones that do exist do such AMAZING work for this fandom. I want to give a shout-out to my friend Li over on Twitter (https://twitter.com/kodomonomochaa) for her incredible work gathering Kodocha media and resources for fans to enjoy. She has been a big part of my channel’s growth and is just a sweet person all around. Make sure to give her a follow on all her platforms!

I also want to give a shout-out to @thekodochaarchive, another great resource for fans to see rare content. There is a lot of interesting rare Kodocha media over on that blog/channel, I highly recommend checking it out! Watching the old Kodocha commercials is like being able to go back and time and experience Kodocha at the time when it was first being aired. I would have loved to have been a kid who grew up with that show!

Last but certainly not least, I want to give a HUGE shout-out to my girl @dailykodocha aka M, who runs the BEST Kodocha blog around and writes INCREDIBLE fanfiction. Please go and check out her fic about Akito during the middle school years; it’s SO good and she gets the characters so well. It feels like it could be an official Kodocha novel. We have so much fun with it, and I look forward to sharing many many many more episodes with everyone!

So wanting to contribute more to a series I deeply love, I decided to create my YouTube channel, as I noticed there weren’t really any video essays about Kodocha anywhere. This felt wrong given how much there is to talk about with the series, and how deep the characters are. 

Many of the videos that you’ve watched from me for most of 2022 were formulated from ideas I’ve had in my head since I first saw the series back in 2016. That’s why I was uploading almost weekly, as the writing flowed so naturally as I’d had a lot of time to think about the characters and plot. 

I’m very proud of all the content I have put out thus far - but I will keep improving! I’ve been re-reading the series and am about to finish volume 10, and noticed some things that I should have talked about in previous videos. It’s crazy just how detailed Obana was when she wrote Kodocha! Just when I think I understand a character, I notice a new detail during a read-through and it completely shifts my perspective on them. I used to feel very indifferent about Fuka until pretty recently! Now she is becoming one of my favorite characters.

Another reason I started my channel was for my mental health. Being creative is what keeps me sane. Unfortunately, making music (my main creative hobby) just didn’t have the same spark for me anymore. It used to be my go-to activity for my mental health - but I think I had done it for so long that I got burned out. Also, I felt very limited in what I could do with music, but with my channel, I feel like I can exercise and hone my writing skills and also talk about something I love in a unique way. This summer, I created a second channel which I hope to upload more content on that focuses on obscure media, which I will use as another outlet to discuss things unrelated to Kodocha. I watch YouTube more than anything and would love to create similar content to YouTubers that I enjoy, where they talk about interesting things from childhood or just niche internet mysteries.

Kodocha is the only thing in my life that has ever consistently brought me joy. Ever since I found the series, it’s turned my life around in more ways than one. When I first watched the anime in 2016, it made what could have been a miserable year for me into something hopeful. Sana’s enthusiasm and positivity really awakened my own, and it’s stuck with me ever since. Maybe taking life so seriously isn’t the answer. Sometimes you just gotta shut up and smile, and not worry about things you can’t fix, and just go with the flow. I never knew by 2023 Kodocha would have brought me so many new friends and just a better understanding of myself and life in general. I hope everyone watching my videos can learn not only about the characters of Kodocha, but about themselves as well. My latest video, part 2 of “Exploring Sana & Akito’s Relationship”, actually helped me in my own marriage. Yesterday, my husband told me that he’s the happiest he’s ever been. It made me feel so good because the research and time I put into that video helped me better understand my husband’s love languages, which ultimately strengthened our marriage. 

Kodocha really is my light in this dark world and I hope I am able to spread the joy that it’s instilled in me.

Just wanna ramble a bit since not many people talk to me anymore lol rip

wrote a fic for wolf lord's lady and am realizing it will probably never get any more foot traffic, the only some of which were from apparently three-ish faithful followers of mine specifically who got a work posted email lmao

not really complaining about it because at least i got two whole comments on it like damn <3 but it's the only fic for the fandom so i had to make up all the tags and that sucked

which made me realize that two fics i had conceptualized to a fair degree would, if i ever wrote them, also be the first of their kind.

which makes me a bit sad cuz if i did write THOSE there'd be a lot more heart in them, so if I went through the trouble of writing them and coming up with godforsaken tags for them and they also pretty much flopped ngl i'd be a little sad.

on a related note while i guess i understand Viridescent Crown not having any fics it's bizarre to me that Stepmother's Fairytale doesn't, considering it's fairly popular

(in retrospect i also wonder if Most Heretical Last Boss Queen (Pryde) will get any fic traffic now that it's getting an anime)

(shit just realized that a good chunk of almost every fic i conceptualized kinda-sorta recently has no fic-presendence. Another Typical Fantasy Romance? The One Within the Villainess? Marriage of Convenience? Bring the Love? Vengeful White Cat? Flirting with the Villain's Dad? Second Life of a Trash Princess? jesus fuck. The only fandoms I've "conceptualized fic for" with precendence is like Kodocha and WMMAP.

i haven't read the fanbooks, the short story collections, the manga (it has extras, i think?), nor the sequel (hannelore's house of lords, right?) yet. i'd like to think that's going to last me for a while, but the brainworms are too strong and i just KNOW i'm going to finish them all in under two weeks, tops. do you have any aob fic recs? or any other book/light novel/web novel/manga recommendations? PLEAS EI'M NOT READY TO LET GO OF AOB FJEAKFN

I've only read the ones that have been translated and for the most part they are just different POV on what we already know happened in the series, I like them, but not much more story wise. . . I think Hannelore's is set after the series though, I looked at a few on the site and they seem to be after Rozemyne has 'graduated' from school, but I didn't want to read them yet so not completely sure they all are... maybe you can clarify after you read them.

I did try to look into AOB fanfiction, but A LOT of them are spoilerly so often I couldn't follow (as I haven't read all the way to the end) or didn't want to be too spoiled. I'm looking though my AO3 history and I only looked at a few before I  decided to just wait, so maybe you or other can add their favorites.

There was one I remember reading and liking was Schlaftraum's Blessing

I admit this is what lead me to finally seeking out the Japanese website and spot reading a few of the chapters. Most fanfiction likes to focus on romance or a romantic moment over telling a story, but this one integrated nicely with the series and had a nice thru arc between all the parts and was written well. I see that the author TheChatteringMagpi has since started a few more AOB stories and they all look interesting, one is AU and the other about Adolphine, so maybe even I can read them without needing to have read everything yet. So if I had to recommend one this is the best I got as I haven't really done a deep dive on AOB fanfiction / Japanese doujinshi.

Would love anyone else with recommendations to add their favorites stories

As for other series... I guess I could write more about this later with a better break down... I actually used to read a lot more when I was younger, but took a break from it, but during Covid I jumped into manga/anime again so I've been playing catchup ever since, it feels like there are more titles than ever now.

21. What was the first fanfic you ever wrote?Um, other than the Sailor Moon one when I was 7, it would be this absolutely horrible Buffy fic. It is both hilarious and mortifying to look back on.

22. Is there anything you regret writing?I mean, it was all experience and helped me improve, so not really? That first one comes pretty close to making me regret it, though. Oh, and I do somewhat regret this one absolute crack fic I wrote after using a random generator that gave me “Lucifer/George Washington” lmao

27. What do you hate more: Coming up with titles or writing summaries?Titles, by far. I don’t like coming up with summaries either, but I basically have the worst, dullest titles in existence because I just don’t have the patience for them.

01 - I really know how to pick ‘em

A shirtless young man blew out a puff of smoke as he sat on the windowsill of his shabby-looking apartment. The cool night air blew through his moist skin and rustled through his blonde bangs.

Ever since he had fallen out of favour with his only living parent, his father, the man’s usual routine consisted of waking up when the moon was out and delving deep into the red-light district far from his hometown.  

He couldn’t clearly remember how he had fallen so low, only that this was the only way he knew how to live now.

Two fair and slender arms wrapped loosely around his neck. To which their owner whispered in his right ear, “Are you coming back to bed?”

“Get off. I’m no longer in the mood.” He warned her.

The woman hissed in dismay and plopped back onto the queen-sized bed where they had fooled around earlier before wrapping the blanket around herself and falling asleep.

The man sighed.

“I sure know how to pick ‘em.”

The next day, the man woke up earlier than expected due to a repetitive, loud knock on his apartment door.

He threw one of his pillows at the door while yelling, “Go away! I’m not interested in whatever you’re selling.”

The next thing he knew, a large and muscular man broke open his door and stomped into the room followed by an equally angry but lean man with hair slicked back except for three, equally spaced brown strands on the right side of his face.

“Where’s my money, Akito-kun?” The lean man shouted while the muscular man pulled the sheets off his bed.

“Hn.” The blonde-haired man looked towards his night stand and found that his worn-out wallet had been emptied. He quickly checked the third drawer under his underwear.

“It’s all gone. That b*tch took it.” He grumbled under his breath.

“I don’t think this is the time to be checking your undies. Oh wait, did the baby wet his pants?”

“Sengoku-san, you wouldn’t happen to be okay with an I.O.U. for today, would you?”

“I’m afraid not, brat. You should know what we do to those who can’t pay.” Sengoku signalled for the muscular man to act. “Hachirou, get him.”

After being repeatedly thrashed around the room, the young man lay flat on the floor covered in bruises and cuts. Sengoku pulled on his blonde hair, forcing him to sit up.

“It’s rude not to straighten yourself when speaking to your elders, didn’t your mother teach you any manners?”

If he had only a bit of energy left, he would have gladly strangled the life out of Sengoku. No one was allowed to badmouthed his mother.

“Ooh. Looking at those eyes, you really want to kill me now. I forgot you were such a mama’s boy. Think you’re so tough, huh? You wouldn’t be able to live like this if it weren’t for my merciful self, you ungrateful little sh*t.”

The young man’s silence only irritated Sengoku.

He raised his dominant hand to smack some sense into the young man, when he was interrupted by his underling, “Boss!”

“What is it, Hachirou? Can’t you see that I’m busy.”

“Sorry, Boss. It’s just that if we don’t leave now, we won’t make it in time for the missus’ birthday party.”

“Oh. I almost forgot.” Sengoku turned his attention back to the young man. “I’ll have to deal with you later, but don’t think you’re off the hook. I’ll come back again in two days’ time. Don’t even think of running away or else I’ll send my hounds after you.”

He gulped at the thought of Sengoku’s hounds chasing after him. These hounds were not actual dogs, they were his underlings. Hachirou, the eighth son was the weakest among them. He had barely survived a fight with Hachirou, he couldn’t even imagine himself fighting against the others.

After warning him, Sengoku and his underling left the room. They left everything where it was, even the main door, remained flat on the floor like himself.

He chuckled.

“I really know how to pick ‘em.”

Did Akito "not hate" Fuka?

So I had a very interesting conversation in the comments of one of my Kodocha fics with a reader, who was really confused by the fan translation of this scene from Chapter 42:

The reader took this to mean that Akito “didn’t hate” Fuka the same way that he “doesn’t hate” Sana and sushi. But that’s not quite right! Let’s break down the translations a little bit.

Disclaimer: I am still learning Japanese! Not an expert or anywhere close, these are just some observations.

So the JPN text reads: “あいつはいーやつだ今も別に嫌いになったわけじゃない.” The key is the use of the kanji “嫌い” which is spoken as “kirai” and means disliked, hated, or disagreeable.

But M, wouldn’t that mean that the sentence says “It's not like I hate her now”? Wouldn’t it have the same meaning as “Because I don’t hate you”?

Not necessarily. In Chapter 9, when Akito says “Because I don’t hate you” he says “キライじゃないから.” (kirai ja nai kara) - you’ll notice he uses "キライ" in katakana rather than the kanji “嫌い."

I think that if Akito "didn't hate" Fuka the one way he "didn't hate" Sana or sushi, Obana would have written it the same way. And that makes sense to me! Fuka was never sushi for Akito, but Sana definitely is!

I would read the JPN sentence as “It’s not like I dislike her now.” I like that take because I think it demonstrates how Akito has grown. Before his world was divided into "hate" and "don't hate" - now he has those complicated in-between feelings where he can acknowledge that she's a good person but that he isn't interested in her that way.

Tokyopop translates the sentence as "I still like her, as a friend.” which I think does a good job getting the same point across in English.

I wanted to watch Wolf Girl and the Black Prince but forgot how pathetic and annoying the girl was and the guy is fucking awful. I was so angry with that show, because it had so much potential but I couldn't bear it.
