Bunch of headcanons about dragon cult
Dragon cult was ancient and powerful semi-feudal church and occupied special place in nordic religion\life because it worshipped head of the nordic pantheon, associated with reign and rule; dragon priests were kingmakers and the medium between men and dragons
"There was a time when I called Tamriel my home, but those days have long since passed. The dovah roamed the skies, vying for their small slices of territory that resulted in immense and ultimately fatal battles." Durnehviir
Unlike other cults dragon cult was spread across all the Skyrim in form of complex pattern, mirroring both distribution of dragons' junarre - dominions, and their hierarchy. Highest position was held by Alduin, next was Paarthurnax, but everything below changed relatively often because dragons fought each other eagerly
Common for a dragon was choosing themself a priest. Although many dragons actually had personal shrines full of clergy and servants, priest chosen by a dragon always had special role. When dragon gives a priest of his liking a new name and a mask, unbreakable bond ties two souls until last days of the chosen mortal
Masked priest held the dominion of their dragon - negotiated with human feudals (you can imagine human political map untop map of the dragon dominions: two different dimentions with often different borders, yet in the same place), collected taxes, managed the religious life of the local population. If dragon had almost nothing to rule then he could pick up himself a priest as only his mouth and companion
Usually (among those dragons who chose themselfs priests) there was one masked priest for one dragon. Exceptions existed, in rare cases there were two or even three priests for one dragon, or one priest for two dragons (i'm thinking about Naaslaarum and Voslaarum)
Usually dragons chose themselves a priest from, wel, priests: men and women trained inside of the dragon cult. But in some cases dragons could take a random person they liked; even Alduin himself did it few times
Masked priest is a voice of their lord. They command priests of dragons who are vassal to their lord; and, most importantly, sometimes they can command these dragons themselves. This was not a sacrilege [TW HETERONORMATIVITY :D]: you can think about masked priest as if they were their dragon's wife and war advisor and housecarl in one body
Alduin has eight masked priests, often called high priests; between them is all Skyrim divided in eight holds. High priest has the right to command any dragon and any dragon priest, but on regular basis certain priests and dragons are associated with every high priest
Priests who shared their life with their lords live longer than average humans but die anyway. After their death their dragons usually pick up new ones and gift them with new name and mask. But names and masks of the high priests are always the same since Atmoran times: Hevnoraak, Nahkriin, Krosis, Morokei, Otar, Rahgot, Vokun, Volsung. Mask Konahrik is ceremonial and represents the first dragon priest
Only high priests have the right to fight and kill dragons. For any other priest this is a sacrilege
#my hcs#tes#forgive me both my dovahzul and my english#i must clarify there was no canon plural form for junaar i estimated it with the rules from thuum dot org#also junaar has been never used to name dragon's domain in tes5 i made it up#morokei calls his place junaar (probably being metaphorical ) (but idk the WHOLE place is called Bromjunaar like literally)#and Solstheim is called junaar by a dragon#and yes normal translation of junaar is ākingdomā#i did what i did i have no regrets

Still waiting on that dragon ramble post
pppft sorry nonny my brain has become mush from staying up for registration u-u
BUT
Here are some hcs I do have
Hierarchy/Thur-ship
Dov follow a system that falls along the line of "Strong shall rule the Weak" sort of deal. In the eyes of mortals, this can be seen as an inherently evil thing (& can develop into such an issue, see: Alduin enslaving mortals) - but to the dragons, this is not the case. Power, to them, is not inherently evil. The strong-willed being in charge ensure safety & longevity of the flock. Yes, a Thur who earned their position through strength could have earned it through incredible cruelty, but strength in the culture of dragons is more than that. A Thur can be named through their leadership skills, how they answered a challenge, or how they protected their flock - but if the beasts were to be honest, these still heavily rely on a strong soul & thu'um to backup these actions.
But moving onto hierarchy, it's not something always followed exactly. Some flocks have no Thur or council, but those with the territory, time, & resources might have the full set-up. Going off what writing/statue/oral history/etc. researchers can find, it was concluded that a fully built hierarchy & dragon society - like one under Alduin's rule potentially, went as such:
Thur: The Lord, their word is often law.
Konahrik: The Warlord, second-in-command to the Thur. Is also head of any council formed, if any, & usually next in line to be Thur should the previous one fall + no one challenges them. This title is also given to exceptional Dragon Priests, and while said priests may not have all the same benefits as their dragon counterparts, their input within the council is extremely important - & those below the rank of Council know to listen.
Kroniid: The Conqueror, 3rd in command. Also part of council & works with the Konahrik on plans to either attack enemies, expand territory, or gather resources. Dragons known for their exemplary fighting prowess are given this title by the Thur, which is considered a great honor.
Council: There's no known term in dovahzul for this word, but essentially this is the group of dov that fall under the Konahrik's command & contribute to ideas benefiting the flock. Alongside the two ranks above them, those in the Council are given their own stretch of territory within the Thur's own to rule.
Tovitaan: Searcher(s). Essentially the scouts that fall under the Kroniid's command. While any dragon can join in a fight or battle, the Tovitaan are the ones who search for territory & resources to claim, send messages to members of the council, keep an eye on the general population & test the waters of rival flocks. Some records show that mortals & dragons both worked together under this rank
Dov: Your general population of dragons, they operate on their own whims, but still respond to those of higher rank. Often within flying distance of the Thur's territory/nest.
Joor: The mortals in a dragon society. Be it through unsavory means like under Alduin's lordship, or just a population that came to co-exist with the dragon society. In the case of the latter, it's an ongoing argument if mortals were considered under the same ranking as the general populace of dragons, or if they still were considered lesser.
Lir: Weakling. The lowest of the low one could go in such a hierarchy - especially since this term is used as an insult. Under stricter rulings, this would be given to dragons who fled from a battle or challenge. But more often than not, it is given to ones who attempted to challenge someone of the Council or higher, or attempted to betray their flock, & failed miserably. Should they live such an encounter, they're essentially catapulted to the bottom of the ranks & bullied relentlessly. Lir are not allowed their own territory, & under the ruling of especially cruel Thur their resources might even be limited. There has been note, however, that such a title is never handed over to those who are ill, injured in other circumstances, or overall unable to function as well as their siblings. It's seen distasteful in the flocks researcher's have come across.
[Note: There has not been a name recorded, or at the very least found, for dragons who are completely solitary.]
Language/Communication
It's well known that the go-to language of Dragons is Dovahzul. This, alongside the Thu'um, makes up most of their spoken language - however, Dragon communication expands a bit more than that. A huge factor in Dovahzul is frequencies/calls & body language!
In regard to the former, I'm gonna be honest & say a big part of this hc is inspired by how the Legendary Godzilla films handle it lol, though it's less about and "alpha" call that tells everyone what to do & more about how these frequencies help get the tone across in conversation. (Though the first bit does sorta happen, i'll try & explain it best I can lol). This is essentially the baseline on what a dragon could really mean during an encounter
For example, if a dragon is responding to you with slow, low, long growls - almost like a purr, then you are safe (for now). They're currently calm &, more likely than not, unbothered by your presence.
Quickly repeated growls, especially those of higher pitch - is a form of warning/alarm.
This plays a little differently in regard to the Thur. There're certain calls made by them specifically! Ranging from ones to establish their position as lord after a victory, whip those loyal to them into a frenzy, or even tell them to back down/move aside. A dov attempting these calls while not being the current Thur is considered a great insult.
The body language of dragons are still being studied, but there are some actions that researchers are confident they know the meaning for! (might draw these out when i get the time):
Upper half of body lowered, if not nearly flattened, on the ground. Wings curled forward, the tips on either side of the head: A form of submission, mainly seen when a new Thur, Konarik, or Kroniid is named.
Bowed head, purposefully tilted to the side to avoid direct eye contact: A bow, this is more common & generally seen in lower-ranking dragons when those of higher rank pass by or greet them.
Upper body lifted high & mouth open - brandishing horns, teeth, & claws: A form of warning to potential rivals/threats. Essentially "stand back! I am dangerous!"
Standing on legs, wings spread, mouth open & scales on tail raised/rattling (dependent on subspecies): Immediate threat/challenge posture, this is a dragon ready to attack! May also slam its tail on the ground as a final warning.
Fully raised tail & spines (if any), often paired with mouth open & (if the subspecies is able) a puffed-out neck: A rude gesture in dragon culture. Often seen in dragons on the "younger" side who wish to push the boundaries.
Wings & body rolled off to the side, head down & avoiding eye-contact. Belly exposed: A form of trust, actually! Or...perhaps an insult depending on the situation. This dragon is exposing its soft underbelly to you, it does not see you as a threat at all.
Health/Soul mechanics
Dragons are generally healthy & hardy beings. It usually takes a powerful illness or another dragon to cause any real damage. But an interesting factor about their ability to heal is that due to the consumption/destruction of the soul being needed to truly kill a dragon, they have intense regenerative abilities! If they have the energy for it, they can close open wounds or even begin to grow back limbs. More powerful dragons can do this instantly, for example: Say Alduin loses his head during a battle. If his soul hasn't been claimed, he can just regrow it in a horrifying eldritch fashion!
But this ability isn't perfect. As stated earlier, it takes an immense amount of energy, especially for the weaker subspecies, & there still might be issues. (i.e. chronic pain in the area, it doesn't reform properly, the reformed tissue/limb is notably weaker, not everything heals up properly).
The need of the soul's destruction to fully kill a dragon can lead to some...embarrassing situations for dragons as well. Keeping the former Thur or potentially a traitorous member of the flock beheaded - their body on display - is a common humiliation tactic. Under Alduin's rule, it was something done against the dragons that aided Miraak & those who were suspected to assist the mortals.
Annnd that's all i got for now lol. Hopefully it makes sense/I don't have any weirdly written sentences

DRAGON CULT HIERARCHY
Dragon cult hierarchy can be divided into two main tiers, with three sub-tiers to each.
The first tier consists of the dragons, the god-kings of Skyrim. Any dragon, regardless of rank, is above even the highest-ranking dragon priests.
The highest sub-tier, supreme ruler (s) of the land, once belonged to a small group of powerful dragon generals, including Paarthurnax. When Alduin took control of the dragon cult, he occupied this top tier all on his own.
The second sub-tier belongs to high ranking dragon generals. Paarthurnax held the highest rank before defecting, after which it was given to Odahviing. Most other dragons in this tier have a similar level of rank, with slight variations based on Thu'um mastery. The named dragons we find in Skyrim are found in this tier.
The third sub-tier is inhabited by all of the lower-ranking dragons, such as those that randomly spawn in Skyrim. They have less influence than the other two tiers and their roles are similar to that of guards.
The second main tier belongs to the dragon priests, or sonakke. Traditionally, the priests provided a bridge between the dragon god-kings and the mortals, however, upon Alduinās taking dominion over the cult, they were used to keep a stronger grip upon the general population.
The first sub-tier of Sonakke includes either one or two priests, the high priest, and, if a worthy candidate is found, Konahrik. The high priest is one of the highest honors in the order of the sonakke, bestowed upon one priest who has shown exceptional loyalty and mastery of Thu'um and spell. The high priest, or sonaak-thur, serves the council or lord of the dragons themselves at the temple of Skuldafn. And from afar administers the dragon cult. Konahrik, on the other hand, is a role given to an exceptionally powerful dragon priest, who will then command the cultās mortal armies. The title means āwarlordā and with it comes a very powerful mask, magically hidden in Bromjunaar sanctuary and only given to the priest meant to take the position when deemed fit by the ruling dragons and the council.
The second tier of sonakke includes the council. The council is made up of the most powerful and privileged priests. Each member of the council, or sonaak-kinbok, has his own temple to manage, and rules over the adjoining area. It is only the members of the council that have been given enchanted masks, crafted by the dragons. The named priests in Skyrim wee members of the council. Those in Solstheim, apart from Vahlok, were not, but were rather a part of the cult of Miraak. Each council member has learned many different shouts.
The third and final tier of the ruling body consists of the dragon priest acolytes, or sonaak-aar. This tier is the most varied. It consists of both lower-ranked priests (virtually āservantsā to the sonaak-kinbok whose temple they live in, though with greater power) as well as apprentices, children and youth taken on and taught by older priests and members of the council to later become priests themselves. Every temple will have a lead sonaak-aar, who serves as a steward. Some sonakke-arre also serve as head priests of lesser temples. Many sonakke-arre know at least one shout, but they are not extremely well-versed. The exception are those who are apprenticed to sonakke-kinbokke, as they are meant to someday take their place.
The temples of the sonakke also housed many others, who would later become the draugr. These were not priests themselves, but rather servants and guards.

I could very well reading too deep in this but Iām gonna list my thoughts about Zaan and Dragon Priest Mask/Names.
Feel free to shoot over Asks if anything is confusing or you want to know more. This is just my thoughts/canons etc, Iāve read the books and notes but I could have missed more.
According to the Lore each Dragon Priest is granted a magical mask that reflects who they are, just like how their names are changed. You can argue that the MASK is the name that they wear. Their can be speculations on if Children who were born inside the Cult have Dovahzul names but I doubt it as it seems to be more of a title given to you, we also know the Dragon Language is very rarely spoken outside of the Priest rank.Ā
Names
Iāll list same names I think you could maybe use if you decided your Priest/Priestess had a child. Note these are more like nicknames. I went more by less entitled names (like Wolf or Raven) since they sound more like a working job title than a petty name. But you do what you want!
Dun - Grace
FaadĀ - Warmth
Mal - Little
PaazĀ - Fair
PeytĀ - Rose
Now that I am typing this Malpaazpeyt is a cute ass name
Thurvokun and Zaan
We all know the unfortunate circumstance that happened to Zaan, the worst fear in all Dragon Priest and their followers; when their Dragon Lord abandons them. Thurvokun and Zaan had a bond so close it was considered a great fortune to serve them, to be seen by them was a blessing. Why he chose her could have any meanings but I wonāt be getting into that right now.
Zaan was gifted a mask that looked very similar to Konahrik (Warlord) this made me speculate a little bit, I believe Zaan was once the wearer of that mask and is in some way still the Warlord. āShe commanded no great battles, conquered no powerful enemiesā but it does not say she didnāt interfere with these battles in some way, with Zaans great bond and her youth and incredible battle skills, she very well may have been chosen to shut down riots and misguided Priests. Her whole armour and mask still resembles Konahrik, she was Thurvokuns greatest champion and Warlord, he left the Dragon War and took her with him, she was his.
As for why he left itās not really known. Zaan could of shown weakness after the Dragon War, she may have even been slightly angry they were not there to help Alduin. Or maybe Thurvokun DID leave the temple to return to the war and came back only to find everyone dead and gone and slowly rotted away without his connection. I donāt believe Thurvokun left with malicious response, I believe he was between two battles of his own and made the wrong choices. Either way Zaanās mentality became unstable after he left and she was severely accused by her followers, but she made no protest to stop them. She was beginning to fade away, she could not speak. The loss of the link between her Dragon was spiritually destroying and her followers saw this and so they slaughtered her.
Zaanās Mask
We know after her followers slaughtered her one of them regretted it, and her name is Ruelde,Ā Rueldeās brother repeatedly told her to have faith in Zaan but she could not see any left in their Priestess. As she watched the snow turn red in Zaanās blood her mind drifted into a power hungry being, she desired the mask. she desired dominance and power over all. Just like a Dragon.
One of my theories is the Masks the Dragons create can speak to their wearer, this is how they become themselves.
As Ruelde came over and gripped Zaanās mask she realized it wouldn't let go, it REFUSED to leave its master, it WAS Zaan. The mask is what makes the Priest, it was created specifically for them and it will never truly leave its wearer until they turn to dust.

Rules: write down 10 facts about yourself and tag 10 followers you want to know better
1.) Drinking things is something that almost instantly calms me down, regardless of distress level or mood, especially if it's through a straw
2.) I still live with my parents, and have yet to get a drivers licenseĀ
3.) Iām 20, but my parents trust me enough to give me a few sips of alcohol every once in awhile. Iāve learned that most alcohol is tastes like shit, and I only like hard cider and eggnog so far
4.) I prefer eating with wooden chopsticks. The affect they have on the flavor of the food is more pleasant than any other eating utensils Iāve tried. Also, I just enjoy using them
5.) I have perfect memory recall regarding my senses of taste, smell, and touch. My memory sucks with literally everything else. But those three senses are so vivid that I can not only remember exactly what something feels/tastes/smells like on command, I can also use those memories to imagine false sensations, such as having a tail or wings. It was especially useful during winter fire drills, where I would remember sensations of the summer sun to keep myself comfortable
6.) My thoughts are more in the form of impressions than actual words or images. Iāve gotten good at passively translating them into words, but that skill isn't the most reliable, and tends to fail during conversations
7.) Iām nearsighted as fuck, but my depth perception is abnormally good. The woman giving me the eye exam said that she had never seen anybody a perfect score on that test before
8.) I love animals, but felines are my absolute favorite
9.) My hugging muscles are my strongest muscles. Iām not sure which specific muscles they are, but they're my strongest ones, amd I love using them
10.) I spent my student career, up until college, as a percussionist. I don't know how that works in other school districts, but in the one I went to, that meant mainly learning the snare drum but being assigned any random percussion instrument for performances. In marching band, I was given the auxiliary cart to play with, and I miss it

6, 9, 12, and 15 for konahrik, kodjak, and ra-tet
6: If they are a fan of hot chocolate, tea, or coffee, how do they like these drinks prepared?
Tutet: He owns a traditional tea set, and finds solace in preparing tea to drink. He prefers to drink his tea with no milk or sugar, just the leaf, and grows his own tea leaves of different varieties in his quarters. He likes to experiment with different herbs and spices too. He experiments with biomancy to encourage new flavours to manifest. If he hadnāt been made into a space marine, perhaps heād own a tea shop.
Kodjak: Fenris only supports the hardiest of plantlife, and tea doesnāt grow there. In fact, heād never even tried tea until he met Tutet, aged almost 200. He doesnāt share Tutetās passion for it, but enjoys it because of how much Tutet does. He doesnāt drink it unless he is with Tutet. In fact, all he drinks when he is away from Tutet is water or Mjod.
Ra-Tet: He appreciates the bitter taste of black coffee and finds it aids in focusing him before a battle, but since astartes metabolisms are too fast for only the strongest of substances to have any affect, normal coffee only serves to be a bitter tasting drink rather than a genuine stimulant.
How do they write?
Tutet: He can write in multiple languages, principally Prosperan (He, along with many other Thousand Sons, had multiple published poems and books on Prospero before the Burning), High Gothic, Low Gothic, and he learned Fenrisian for communication with Kodjak. His handwriting in Prosperan, High Gothic and Fenrisian is perfectly formed, in Low Gothic it is more akin to neat cursive handwriting rather than perfect calligraphy
Kodjak: He can write in Fenrisan, High Gothic and Low Gothic. No matter what language he is writing in, his handwriting always seems to have a rough edge to it, unless he is really taking his time.
Ra-Tet: He can write in Low Gothic and High Gothic (they are standard for Astartes) and can also write in Cthonian. His handwriting is perfect across all languages but always has a very slight slant to it, as if someone had switched it to italics.
12: If they were in an animation or TV series, who would they be voiced by? Would there be a an accent to perfect?Tutet: When not wearing a helmet, his voice sounds similar to Vin Dieselās smooth, deep voice. His helmetās design causes his voice to sound more like Tom Hardyās Bane from the batman movies, but slightly deeper and less nasal. His voice has the barest hint of Prosperan accent, which would sound similar to an Arabic accent on Earth.
Kodjak: Kristofer Hivjuās voice is perfect both in its gruff tone and itās Scandinavian accent. There was never a more perfect person to play Kodjak in an animation.
Ra-Tet: Keith Fergusonās voice as Reaper is a perfect fit for Ra-Tet, however it should be accented slightly with South African.
15: How do they type?
Tutet: Types in longhand with perfect grammar regardless of the language he is typing in. He always types fast too. No long replies, if he can help it. He enjoys conversation face to face just as much as he does conversation across IM, but prefers staying in his quarters where he can read in peace or study.
Kodjak: He contracts and shortens words and abbreviations when he types, simply because itās more efficient than typing longhand. He prefers to talk in person with his friends however.
Ra-Tet: When he types messages at all, his style of typing is blunt and minimal. In fact, he rarely speaks to any of his battle brothers outside of battle, and only uses wireless messaging to relay orders and commands to his squad.

I've seen headcanons in fics that I've loved so far, so heres a small compilation of them and my own;
- trans Nerevar in the most poetic way possible
- half dwemer Voryn, like as in the first chimer that set down the structure of house dagoth United with the dwemer and Voryn has dwemer cousins and also has it in his blood
- calling another person by their daedric name is incredibly intimate and meaningful, bringing a whole new meaning to my Nerevar primarily referring to vivec as vehk.
- I've also got my own hc that Nerevar calls Voryn Deht very very rarely, seeing as he was born a dagoth before he even earned his own name, and Voryn is very proud of this fact
- I will NEVER drop that the old chimeri money was called drakes. never in my life. I'm sorry but they only use septims after the imperials start invading
- vivec was always intersex both ways. he is a rare case in media that I dont often enjoy unless done the right way, of having both genitalia. A common misconception amongst intersex folks that actually exist, but considering vivec wants to be everything, that has to stem from somewhere, and so he sort of always was everything. I hope this makes sense
- staring into nerevar's eyes is like staring into the midday sky his eyes are so blue he needs contacts
- vivec looks like someone who likes the color green. but also their favorite color is purple because it's two colors mixed
- almalexia is the tallest in the first council. it goes, from tallest to shortest; Almalexia, Sotha Sil, Voryn, Dumac, Nerevar, Vivec.
- I dont care if they're called dwarves, their in game models are heighted with ARGONIANS . DUMAC IS WIDE AND HAIRY AND ILL DIE ON THIS HILL
- also transgender sotha sil
that's all for now until I'm able to think of more

I love how I understand not a single word abt the fandom you and Coins are in now, but I'm here along for the ride
Ur ramblings and their art are just too good to stop enjoying it no matter how much I understand
GAHAHA LMFAOOO
it sounds like madmen rambling about dead gods or something maybe if you can read that far. a 2002 game - if you've ever head of skyrim it's the third installment in the series! the elder scrolls 3: morrowind
I think it means the world to me that despite the fact you have NO CLUE what I'm talking about you like it anyway. and sunny's art that's really sweet to us. a few days ago they realized you like their posts even thought you have no clue what we're into nowadays and it made them swoon!!!!
I'm a little autism so just real quick it's about a customizable person you play that arrives on a small island continent set in the elder scrolls universe, and you're essentially playing as the reincarnated version of that continent's king. no spoilers but the king was done dirtyyyy by his friends when he was alive. the kings name was Nerevar, and you're his reincarnation so people call you "Nerevarine."
so glad you're still liking it ā”ā”ā” just wait until I start rambling about these fuckers I'm gonna sound INSANE
