shinobi life

so this is like a super old manga series (okay maybe not that old) that i was super obsessed with, and for some reason suddenly remembered out of nowhere because naruto recs suddenly came out on my youtube page lol. I know random.

ANYWAY i just suddenly want to talk about it or reread it because it was just one of the best shoujo mangas ive read AND had all the tropes that I WILL DIE FOR. Basically time travel, romance, ninjas, plot twists, historical japan, cute guys, AND MANY MORE!!!

Its not perfect and it had some plot holes and at first the heroine was kinda annoying (i think idk i havent read it in years), BUT it still really had a unique plot line

what makes me super sad is theres not as much time travel or ninja or historical romance mangas out there that are actually well written. I think ive basically read everything out there lol.

AND I CRAVE FOR THOSE YOU KNOW :’

so ive basically reread shinobi life maybe 3 times on my way to reread it for the fourth time just because.

went to the tag to find more ppl fangirling over it but its overpowered with naruto aus and fica which i mean is fair cause theyre also shinobis haha

Hasegawa Rio, from Shikabane Cherry by Konami Shouko

Normally I wouldn’t put a whole-ass page and a half of manga on here, but I wanted to showcase the part where Rio clicked for me as a character. This is one of the simplest ways I’ve seen a manga tackle a transgender character coming out while still being respectful of her, and it continues being respectful of her from here on out as well (well, except her dad is transphobic, and as a result she spends some time presenting as male against her wishes, but even during that time the protagonist respects her as a woman.) The worst it does, I would say, is a joke about her removing her makeup that reads as transphobic, and also doesn’t make sense because when we see her without her makeup later she doesn’t even look that different.

I’m not sure I would recommend Shikabane Cherry on its own merits, because it’s got its questionable parts, and also, as a shoujo manga about a zombie, has tons of body horror, but you know what, Konami Shouko? You wrote a good trans girl. You’ve got my respect for that, at least.

(No link this time because there’s no trustworthy scanlations site to read the relevant chapters of Shikabane Cherry on, oops.)
