“Dragon Summoning”
In a lot of stories, dragons demand “virgin sacrifices”. So here, a band of dragon hunters stage an elaborate ceremony to lure the dragon in, with the to-be-sacrificed ‘maiden’ ready to pounce. The rest of the team lies in wait, as the dragon will be too distracted by the magic that calls to him.
The master of ceremonies, or dragon summoner, is wearing clothing inspired by traditional Korean wedding garbs, just with more dragon scales; trophies from previous hunts.
The overall theme of a “wedding” - which a lot of these myths and fairy tales were a metaphor for - is something I’ve wanted to paint for a long time. Also, got to use my own traditional wedding pictures as reference. :)
The background is based on pictures of the ruins of Ayutthaya, Thailand. To fit with that setting, I also used a lot of historical armor, patterns, headdress and textile designs from that region, and beyond, for this band of warriors and hunters.
Painted in acrylics on 35 x 27 cm / 11 x 13 inches gesso panel. Portfolio.
