“i saw in my mind fairy lights through the mist” so i could be remembering wrong but i believe during the gallifrey flashbacks in divided loyalties, they talk about some sort of lights overhead? how koschei and theta probably saw them together.

“i kept calm and carried the weight of the rift” koschei was dying inside all that time at the academy, but she couldnt let herself show it. for theta.

“pulled him in tighter each time he was drifting away” koschei tried so hard to hold onto theta. but the truth? theta was going to leave in every timeline.

“my spine split from carrying us up the hill” again, koschei just wanted theta. that was all. they tried so hard to hold onto him, but he didnt even see it. maybe he did. it didnt matter.

“i stopped trying to make him laugh” they used to be so close. one day it just wasnt worth it anymore. he couldnt pine after a ghost.

“thinkin, how much sad did you think i had” koschei was always there for theta. did theta even see it?

“so long, london” not leaving london, but gallifrey. afterall, koschei couldnt sit and wait around for theta to come back forever, could he? he had to move on. move on without theta.

“you’ll find someone” because theta did. again and again. companion after companion.

“i didnt opt in to be your odd man out” theta has loved so many, but apparently he could never bring themself to love koschei.

“i left all i knew” because he did. koschei left all he knew on gallifrey, and went to search for a purpose.

“you left me at the house by the heath” why did you have to go theta? didnt u understand koschei was going to love you forever? she did. they still do. it wasn’t enough.

“i stopped CPR, after all its no use” theres no use trying to be good when everyone has always treated u like what u r, a monster.

“and im pissed off you let me give you all that youth for free” they were just kids. koschei wasted her teen years loving someone that was always going to leave.

“two graves, one gun” in the end, its always theta pointing a gun at koschei, and koschei welcomes Death.

“and you say i abandoned the ship, but i was going down with it” theta was always so mad at koschei, but koschei would have sacrificed everything for theta. and didnt she?

“my white knuckle dying grip” koschei was always meant to die by the doctor’s hands. and he will continue to every time.

“holding tight to your quiet resentment” maybe it isnt so quiet. but its there.

“my friends said it wasnt right to be scared, every day of a love affair” this could mean multiple things. maybe koschei talked to the deca about theta?

“every breath feels like rarest air, when you’re not sure if he wants to be there” koschei never knew that theta loved him. she knew. of course she did. it didnt matter.

“just how long did you think i’d go? before i’d self implode” how long would koschei have waited for theta? not forever. he was always going to break eventually.

“you swore that you loved me, but where were the clues” again, koschei was begging to be noticed. theta didnt even see them.

“i died on the altar waiting for the proof” even now, koschei is just trying to get theta to look at him. he dies every time.

“you sacrificed us to the gods of your bluest days” about how theta left (in the divided loyalties flashbacks) and went and found the toy maker. he was a god.

“and im just getting color back into my face” will koschei ever be over theta? no. i dont think so.

“im just mad as hell cause i loved this place” gallifrey, but more, theta.

“had a good run, a moment of warm sun” they were happy for a bit, so was it all worth it? was all the pain and suffering and death worth a few of theta’s smiles? theta will look at anyone but koschei. why?

i’m absolutely loving “the shadows that sing so far”. every time you update it’s like the highlight of my week. i was wondering where you get your inspiration from? your ideas are so creative, i love everything you do <3 also wondering how many chapters you have planned for the series? not that i want it to end, but i am curious if we are nearing the end or if there is a lot more that is going to happen.

Oh, this is so sweet and such a fun/interesting ask!

I draw my inspiration from a lot of different avenues - there are certain songs that I base scenes around (for example..."Clean" by Taylor Swift is kind of my Elain theme song and there's a specific scene with her and Vassa coming up that I've written whilst listening to that song the entire time).

For descriptions of physical places, I often look on Pinterest to get a more visual idea of what I'm imagining in my head, and then I'll use the picture to really paint a picture of the place I'm envisioning.

I research the mythology that SJM bases many of her villains off of - Koschei is actually a very prominent antagonist in Russian folklore - and then formed the main points of the plot of TSTS accordingly.

But mostly, my plot ideas just come from what I personally want to see happen in the next story or situations that I just find really fun to write haha. I wanted Azriel and Elain's relationship to be secretive/sneaking around because I think that's hot as hell (and also, given the forbidden nature of the relationship, I feel like it has to be that way in the next book, too). But like, Elain's whole friendship with Vassa came along because I just wanted them to be friends, ha - though of course, at this point in the story, their friendship and Elain coming to the mortal manor has heavy significance to the plot as well.

No idea how many chapters there will be, but I'd estimate that the story is about 2/3 finished - so still a decent amount left! Thanks for the ask and thank you for reading the story ♥️

𝐖𝐡𝐨'𝐬 𝐀𝐟𝐫𝐚𝐢𝐝 𝐨𝐟 𝐋𝐢𝐭𝐭𝐥𝐞 𝐎𝐥𝐝 𝐌𝐞?

Just deeply thinking about how "Who Afraid of Little Old Me?" by Taylor Swift is just Master Coded to me because of how the Time Lords used them with the drums and helped turn them into the villain they became (along with the Doctor's deal with making the Master into Death's Champion.) ( Yes, I did just go into deep introspection about how all the lyrics fit them below the cut...)

The who's who of "Who's that?" is poised for the attack. --- becoming a villain.

But my bare hands paved their paths. You don't get to tell me about sad--- losing the life they could have had because instead they were used by the Time Lords, driven insane with the drums, and betrayed by their best friend who chose Koschei to become "Death's Champion" instead of Theta, creating centuries of a painful path in life to follow.

If you wanted me dead, you should've just said. Nothing makes me feel more alive. --- how they come to cheat Death every time, accepting their new role as Death's Champion.

So I leap from the gallows and I levitate down your street. Crash the party like a record scratch as I scream "Who's afraid of little old me?". You should be --- accepting their role as the villain they've been made out to become, while also fighting for their autonomy, always being the thorn in the Doctor's side.

The scandal was contained. The bullet had just grazed. At all costs, keep your good name. You don't get to tell me you feel bad --- this is all directed at the Doctor, who constantly tries to be the Good person and say they are better, but yet had a role in making the Master who they are.

Is it a wonder I broke? Let's hear one more joke. Then we could all just laugh until I cry. I was tame, I was gentle 'til the circus life made me mean. "Don't you worry, folks, we took out all her teeth." --- about the Drums by the Time Lords and the Betrayal by his best enemy and how he constantly hides the scared and lonely little boy he once was away behind a facade of control and villainy.

So tell me everything is not about me. But what if it is? Then say they didn't do it to hurt me. But what if they did? --- obviously about the Doctor, but also the Time Lords. Feeling used and hurt.

I wanna snarl and show you just how disturbed this has made me. You wouldn't last an hour in the asylum where they raised me --- how the Master constantly lashes out as the villain. Not to mention how Missy/The Master ended up escaping from Gomer's Asylum on Gallifrey after being treated for the Drums and getting their revenge on Rassilon for causing it. Also talking about how they were raised with the Drums driving them insane in their head to begin with since looking into the Untempered Schism at only Age 8 at the Academy.

I'm always drunk on my own tears, isn't that what they all said? That I'll sue you if you step on my lawn. That I'm fearsome and I'm wretched and I'm wrong. --- pretty self-explanatory here with the Master being known as Gallifrey's most Infamous child and being "one of the most evil and corrupt beings our Time Lord race has ever produced. Your crimes are without number and your villainy without end."

Putting narcotics into all of my songs. And that's why you're still singing along --- could be looking into this one too much, but narcotics can be like the Master's ability to hypnotize others. Mostly this one is directed towards their bond with the Doctor despite everything...

'Cause you lured me. And you hurt me. And you taught me. You caged me and then you called me crazy. I am what I am 'cause you trained me. --- again, coming back to the beginning of it all with the Time Lord's and the Doctor playing a part in making the Master who they turn out to be.

wanted plots please. (muse specific)

aberdeen carano: after 100 years of being captured and tortured, bambi breaks free and kills her captors. the world is a strange and terrifying place and she ends up on the one person she's always had's doorstep. her will they won't they, her enemies and sometimes lovers, the one constant that's been around as long as her. could be another vampire. could be an immortal.

alyssa dawson: after living in hiding for a year and a half, alyssa dawson, previously known as whitney fernstrom, a well known assassin in the right circles, is found once more. which means it's time to tell her partner of the last year exactly who she is and what she's done, all while on the run.

dima federov: while scoping out a dangerous deal, dima is dragged back into action as the deal goes horribly wrong and a stranger, an innocent bystander, is nearly killed in the crossfire. dima steps in to protect the bystander, getting them away from the scene and bringing them to koschei's warehouse.

echo hancock: out running her past, echo has been hiding in another country, in a big city, working as a nanny when one day, she hits someone with her car. it's not hard enough to kill them, but her guilt leads her down a path of damn near stalking as she attempts to make it up to them, perhaps a little too pushy as she tries to forge a friendship.

ivy reyes: ivy's angry girl image, her heartbreak angel image, is challenged when another artist, one with a bit more of a chaotic history than her own, is thrust into her life. a pr relationship. something to pad her next album, and theirs. interviews and public events, a song or two together, the whole thing is lined up. surviving it and pulling it off is the hard part.

lita price: after a traumatic event that lita can't quite cope with, she hits the road, trying to outrun herself. after her car breaks down, she decides to attempt hitchhiking to continue on her getaway. she is picked up by a stranger with their own haunted past. the two end up, entirely by accident, on a roadtrip, crashing in motels and public camping grounds, getting to know each other and wished up a life for each, which eventually gets entangled with each other.

taylor king: stuck with a situationship that makes her absolutely miserable, taylor meets a stranger one night at a bar who challenges her idea of how to be treated by someone who really does care for you. the two could become friends first before developing feelings or they could end up in a whirlwind thing neither of them saw coming.

Totally agree with everything you said. I first got into tumblr during my Supernatural hyperfixation when I was 15 and that show meant so much to me back in the day. Watching the finale was like getting 15-year-old me punched in the face. With a hammer. Several times (Hope she doesn’t get tetanus and goes to super mega ultra hell)

I think we, as a society should just pretend that the finale didn’t happen and just take as canon the first fix-it fic that gets posted on AO3 😂

“Come on! It’ll be fun”  

“Absolutely not Y/N, not on any planet would you find me wearing that”

“Please Master” You fluttered your eyelashes at the Timelord who was currently standing in your room with his arms folded and a scowl on his face.  

There had been a number of weird events that had led up to this point. You had been with the Doctor and the Fam when you had met the Master for the first time as O and then you had chosen to travel with the Master of the Doctor. Further down the line when you two had made what was supposed to be a quick visit home, the Master’s TARDIS broke down and would not fly. Then the Doctor and the Fam turned up on your doorstep as the Doctor had sensed that there was another TARDIS in her vicinity and had come to investigate. This led to you all having to live together in your tiny house because of the Coronavirus lockdown.  

Seven long weeks had gone past with the Frenemies living underneath the same roof which was an experience to say the least.  And now you were trying to persuade the infamous Timelord to put on your latest lockdown purchase, a onesie.  

You held out the packaged garment towards him, he grabbed it and unwrapped it sulkily.  

“It’s purple” was all he could say.  

“I know, your favourite colour, I’ve got a matching one in yellow” you replied showing him your own.  

The Master sighed in annoyance but then began to unbutton his shirt, getting ready to put the onesie on. You clapped with glee and turned your back to him so you could put yours on too. You snuck a quick peak whilst you were stepping into yours. “Hey! No peaking! Naughty” pouted the Master.

You giggled and zipped up your own, “ready?” You asked  

“Ready” muttered the Master and you both spun around. As predicted the Master looked as adorable as you thought, a perfect blend of cute and pissed off in his purple all in one nightwear.  

“HA! You look brilliant” you exclaimed, taking a step towards him. You rubbed his arm, enjoying how soft he felt. “Can we show the others?”  

“Y/n, don’t push it”  

“Come on Master, I still think you look intimidating, even wearing this” You said, hoping that enough sucking up to him would get you out of the dog house. This definitely seemed to work as the Master let you drag him out of your room and down into the living room the Doctor and the Fam were using as a camp/ bedroom. The Doctor had turned it into an adult sized fort, complete with oversized cushions and cosy blankets and beanbags all from her TARDIS.  

“Tada!” You jumped in front of them arms spread out.  

“Ahh y/n, you look fantastic” said the Doctor.  

“Yeah I want one” said Yas

“I have another surprise for you all” you said beckoning for the Master to come in “and next up we have the Master, modelling the latest from Gallifrey”  

You weren’t sure what you had expected the Master to do but walking in, like he was on a catwalk, getting to the front of the group and unzipping the onesie so it exposed just a little of his dark chest and winking seductively at you, was not what you expected.  

“Wow” was all the Doctor could say.  

“Even I’m a little bit turned on. I’m a bit confused” admitted Graham.

You all looked a Graham for a little bit and just as the atmosphere was getting a little awkward, Ryan got up and announced “who’s up for watching that film?”
