Millions of dollars in new rent relief is available for Riverside County landlords and tenants affected by economic hardship during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Riverside County Board of Supervisors in February approved $57 million in federal funds from the U.S. Department of the Treasury.
The rental assistance program, called United Lift, is a joint effort by Lift to Rise, Inland SoCal United Way, and the county and is managed by United Way. Last year, the program dispersed some $33 million in rental assistance.
“Riverside County is eager to see this next round of assistance administered in a quick and efficient manner to as many residents as possible and is grateful to our nonprofit partners for their work getting these funds to folks who need it the most,” said Riverside County Board of Supervisors Chair Karen Spiegel.
Applications for the next round of aid began Monday, March 8. The program will continue until funds are depleted, or until Dec. 31, 2021, whichever happens first.

Here’s what United Lift’s 2021 program covers:
One-time rental assistance covers up to 12 months of unpaid rent from March 13, 2020, until the time of application, plus an additional three months of future rent.
Eligibility is limited to renters in Riverside County with a current lease agreement who are earning 80% or below of the area’s median income and can document a loss of income due to COVID-19 impacts that leave them unable to make their rent.
Rent relief is provided without regard to immigration status.
Priority will be given to households with incomes less than 50% of the area median income, as well as households with one or more adults that have not been employed during the 90 days before submitting applications.
Landlords with tenants with unpaid debt balances can notify their tenants about the program.
Landlords are the recipients of the money and will get one payment credited to the renter’s account.
More information on eligibility and the application portal can be found at UnitedLift.org.
Grant money for housing nonprofits
Two housing nonprofits are the recipients of more than $680,000 in grants from NeighborWorks America.
Neighborhood Partnership Housing Services received a $295,000 grant, and Neighborhood Housing Services of the Inland Empire got $394,500.
The missions of NPHS and NHSIE are to help San Bernardino County residents access affordable housing, revitalization projects, wealth-building initiatives and services for small businesses.
“The NeighborWorks America funding is critical to the economic recovery of our local communities, residents and businesses,” Clemente Mojica, NPHS CEO, said in a statement.
Mojica said the money will help NPHS fund services to underserved communities and provide business owners tools to grow in challenging times.
Credit union center opens in Fontana
Credit Union of Southern California has opened a full-service branch in Fontana, sharing space with two other credit unions.
The institutions call the shared space the Credit Union Center, serving members of the Anaheim Hills-based CU SoCal, Gardena-based Pacific Transportation Federal Credit Union (PacTrans), and Riverside-based Printing Industries Credit Union.
“Credit unions are financial cooperatives and as such we follow a unique set of principles,” said CU SoCal President and CEO Dave Gunderson. “One of those principles is Cooperation Among Cooperatives. We do this by working together as credit unions for the financial well-being of our members and the community.”
CU SoCal’s Fullerton branch also shares space with PacTrans FCU.
Kids academy coming to Corona
Kiddie Academy Educational Child Care is developing a Corona location that should open in early 2022.
The company has signed a lease with Bedford Marketplace LLC for 9,990 square feet of retail space for a new site at 2570 Bedford Canyon Road.
The new location will serve children ages 6 weeks to 12 years old, offering full-time care, before-and after-school care.
The franchise owners in Corona are Nemi and Payal Kotadiya.
“Corona has grown residentially over the last 5 years and has lacked retail amenities. The site for KA will be surrounded by commercial co-tenants needed to help support the residential population,” said Jeff Brazier, chief development officer at Kiddie Academy.
The Corona location will have a 12,000 square foot playground, including separate play areas for infants, preschoolers and school-age children.

176 Bitcoin [BTC] extorted; former BJP MLA Nalin Kotadiya arrested
According to recent reports, the former MLA of Bharatiya Janata Party [BJP], Nalin Kotadiya from Dhuliya, Maharashtra, was arrested by Ahmedabad Crime Branch. The arrest was related to an investigation of a 9.95 crore worth Bitcoin [BTC] extortion case in Surat.
Kotadiya was accused of abducting Shailesh Bhatt, a Surat-based builder, and extorting Bitcoin worth crores from him. He claimed that Shailesh Bhatt was the main conspirator and stated that Bhatt had recently kidnapped two investors and extorted 2,300 BTCs from them.
The police filed a complaint against the MLA after which they began their investigation. The victim who filed the complaint stated that Inspector Patel, one of the officers in charge of the investigation, had abducted Shailesh Bhatt, a Businessman, and forced him to transfer BTC from his mobile wallet.
Moreover, the perpetrator did not respond to any of the summons sent by the Crime Investigation Department [CID]. The former MLA was declared as a wanted criminal from the court because he failed to turn up for questioning. Kotadiya was absconding ever since the CID declared a manhunt on him. He failed to appear to the court despite several summonses, resulting in the Ahmedabad Court declaring him a proclaimed offender.
According to recent reports, a team of Amreli police tried to extort BTCs from Shailesh Bhatt, his associate and Kotadiya’s nephew Kirit Paladiya. Further investigation showed that the mastermind behind the conspiracy was Paladiya. He had made a deal with inspecter Patel and others with an agenda of extorting a total of 176 BTCs from Mr. Bhatt.
In addition, the former Dhari MLA, Kotadiya, had openly supported Hardik Patel-led Patidar quota agitation which aimed at providing reserved quotas in education and government jobs. He is also facing a case of allegedly extorting money from Madhubhai Vasani, a builder. He demanded 2 crores as extortion and when Vasani refused, Kotadiya and his group thrashed him and took away his gold chain and pendant worth 60,000 rupees.
However, the police have also registered a case against Mr. Bhatt who originally reported a complaint against the former Bharatiya Janata Party [BJP] MLA. The registered case stated that before his own abduction, Bhatt had extorted some cash and over 2000 BTCs from Dhaval Mavani, who was a member of a cryptocurrency firm called BitConnect, a fraudulent platform where investors were promised up to 365% yearly returns on their Bitcoin investment.
