Is it bad that a part of me wants to see Kuina (who beat Zoro at fighting over 2000 times, training to be the greatest swordswoman, acutely aware of what people say about her gender and how it impedes her dream) meet Sanji (refuses to fight a woman just because they're a woman), just to see what type of trainwreck ensues. I feel like it would either be awful or absolutely hilarious.

laughing my ass up at the thought of kuina being appointed zoros guardian angel, because if she can't be the greatest swordfighter in the world he HAS to do it and her just constantly cursing and breaking all the overworldly laws to keep him alive despite all of what he does constantly haha. Just constantly being like.. I'll keep you alive for now, but once you die I'll kill you myself twice more for all of this.

in the beginning kuina thinks that it can’t be that bad. he was a hotheaded kid, but in the years since her death he’s come a long way — both in skills and maturity. he leaves the dojo dead set on making his mark on the world. on hunting down dracule mihawk (oh my god is he crazy?? he’s seventeen, talented, but not ready). he immediately gets lost (great), becomes a pirate hunter, makes a name for himself, and is he serious? letting the marines tie him to a post for three weeks? she has her work cut out for her, that’s undeniable, but surely it’ll only get easier from here. THEN he meets luffy

While you were busy studying the blade, I was haunting the narrative.

Though I’ve seen it getting mocked a lot, I think Zoro’s backstory is genuinely pretty compelling. The fact that Kuina’s death is completely stupid and mundane is what makes it such a tragedy, and I like that. She’s someone who’d worked her ass off her entire life to prove herself in an environment that shunned her (to no fault of her own) and had managed to surpass all competition, seemingly on her way towards becoming the greatest swordsman of all time, the stuff of legends. She then died at the age of 11 from slipping and falling down a flight of stairs. All her hard work and effort gone down the drain before she even had a chance to make a name for herself, her only legacy being her father who didn’t believe in her, and a kid named Zoro. He promised in that moment that he’d become the greatest swordsman of all time in her honour, but in my opinion, I don’t think he’ll ever believe he deserves it. In Zoro’s heart, he knows that Kuina’s talent and dedication far outstripped his own, and if she had gotten her chance, she could’ve gone down in history books as the greatest swordsman to ever live, but no. She died because she accidentally fell down some stairs on the way to get some sword polish. No poetic end, no great achievements, no legendary future as the most powerful swordsman on earth, nothing. Just a regular accident, could happen to anybody. Kuina’s died in the most stupid, mundane, uninteresting way possible (not even shown onscreen) and that’s what makes it genius.
