Drama CD: [黒吉原メランコリア] The First Night: Agumo Hibari - Part 1
Heyyy everyone I’m back~~~ with a series that is not like all the rest... except for the recycled seiyuu (#Rejet #eye-roll) and the setting (Yoshiwara; well at least this time you are not the courtesan).
The story revolves around a *rumour* that mermaid tears contain powers of eternal youth/life. And to test this out, a game has begun in the black quarters aka. ‘Kuro’ part of Yoshiwara. The rules for the players are as follows:
You must enthrall her.
You must not hurt her.
You must not let her escape.
The one who successfully achieves the three criteria above is the winner, and he can make the mermaid (i.e. YOU/the listener) his wife/mistress and wield the power of her tears. There are six players in total, including the game creator Agumo Hibari (cv. Toriumi Kousuke).
So, let the game begin.

NB. Each story in this series has two discs, so to keep this from becoming too long I will be doing a two-part synopsis and giving my thoughts at the end.
[Disc 1]
You can't sleep and are arranging flowers in your room, when Hibari comes over. He helps you and starts reminiscing about your first days here in Yoshiwara:
...It was the end of plum blossom season, the birds are chirping and the weather is nice. Your pimp (/guardian who raised you) brings you over to Kuro Yoshiwara in a horse-drawn carriage, and Hibari comes out to greet you. You glare at him in anger, and he's all like: 'Instead of hating me, why don't you hate your useless debt-ridden parents for selling you off?' #he’sgotapoint #burnnn
He promises your life will change now that you have come to Kirarou, the top house of Kuro Yoshiwara. Taking you up to the rooftop, he shows you the panoramic view, pointing out the burgundy gate of Yoshiwara - he warns that if you try to escape, you will face harsh punishment and possibly death.
He introduces himself as an old-timer/factotum and #1 oiran: Agumo Hibari. And oh btw he was the one who spent a fortune to get you into this place. ...But there's no time to be mad at him. You have to hurry up and get ready to serve the clients.
...Ofc he's not really going to make you perform hooker duties. He takes you into the lounge and blindfolds you, claiming that you are not allowed to see the customers' faces. But! Tonight *it just so happens* that there are no clients. So he's gonna evaluate you to see if you are a good fit for Kirarou.
Before he even starts, you hit him, and he bear-hugs you to restrain your movements. He starts assessing your appearance, mumbling to himself that he can't believe that you are actually a mermaid with the blood of the mythical Happkyaku-bikuni and who's gonna win this game---
He gives you your courtesan name: Nanami, which means 'the seven seas', in commemoration of your origins. You try to kill yourself by biting your own tongue, and he stops you and knocks you out to prevent any more funny business. Thus concludes your first day in Kuro Yoshiwara...
*
After putting you to bed, the barkeep brings Hibari the old newspaper he asked for, and informs him that there are suspicious characters hanging around the brothel quarters. The papers reveal news about a boat that capsized near the coast of Kumano, and a girl who drifted to shore with all her memory lost.
He speculates that this girl is Nanami, but cannot be sure that you are the rumoured mermaid, since your anatomy is fully human. He decides to investigate further.
Next morning, he makes you promise not to take your own life again, before loosening your restraints. He comments that your hands feel cold and are covered in scars - probably from your previous fishing job.
He tells you that he, too, was sold to this brothel just like you. However, he did not despair, and eventually became the Top Host here. He can afford whatever he wants and is allowed to exit the gates freely as he pleases. He admits that, if he ever quits, he has no relatives left and hence nowhere else to go.
He gives you a dried specimen of the oiransou plant - so named because its aroma is similar to the powder used by courtesans - and asks you to put it in his room if you make up your mind to become the next oiran; he would be your mentor.
After his morning nap, he bumps into you near the dressing mirror and asks you to sit down. He proceeds to... do your makeup. He wants to take you out to Asakusa for the day, to lift your spirits and prepare you for courtesan training.
*
It's your first time in a big city and, upon arrival, you almost get run over by the tram, so he holds your hand to keep you by his side. First he takes you to his acquaintance tailor and acquires a yuuzen uchikake-kimono and some casual wear for you; he insists on paying for them as part of his mentor duties.
After the dress fitting, he takes you to a newly opened parlour, and you both try this thing called an 'ice cream soda' for the first time. You stare at him as he shows you how to eat it, then you finally crack a smile when you get your first taste of this treat.
He remarks that you look more childlike and approachable when you laugh, but warns you not to show this side of yourself easily to clients if you want to become a good oiran.
As a special treat, he takes you to Ryōunkaku, the tallest building in Japan at the time, and the first to have an electric lift. You ride up to the 12th floor to see the panoramic view of Tokyo (the lift scares you half to death XD), and he points out all the landmarks to you: Sumida River, Sensou-ji,...
With the coin-operated telescope, you notice a disturbance near the gates of Yoshiwara. The two of you hurry back via rickshaw. There has been a disagreement, and some women tried to escape but were caught. They could neither return to the brothel nor start over elsewhere, as a result, they were forced to either seek death or take a medicine that would render them invalids.
Hibari warns you to be careful not to end up like them.
*
In the middle of the night, Hibari is awakened to news that Nanami has tried to escape. He rushes to the dungeon where you are held captive and asks you why you're doing this, despite his repeated warnings.
You attempt to bite your tongue again, but he stops you and claims that, since he's the one who bought you, you are not allowed to escape nor die without his consent. He calls you a 'caged bird' and explains the origins of the 'pinky swear':
For the courtesans of Yoshiwara, the only path to freedom is to rise through the ranks and become an oiran, who would then have unrestricted mobility and the ability to choose her clients/work.
In the past when a courtesan fell in love, she would *work extra hard* in order to be an oiran. During this time, she would make a pinky promise with her loved one: even though her customers may do whatever they want with her body, her heart belongs to him alone.
And so Hibari offers his pinky, in order to show you how committed he is to making you an oiran. He gives you the option to bite it off, but your *inner vampire* is off that day. Before he leaves, he asks if you still want to die, and seems content to see that you have wavered a little.
*
You knock on his door the following night, dressed in the yuuzen robe he bought for you, and hands him the dried oiransou to signal your resolve.
Aaaand you are on your way to courtesanhood. First things first, he will teach you some basic rules of Yoshiwara. He starts off with the toko-sakazuki: the practice of a mutual toast between newly-weds before their first night together - this tradition is also observed at Yoshiwara for the first time between a courtesan and a client.
Hibari tries to make up excuses for using amazake (a type of light, sweet wine), but later admits that he can't hold his liquor - although he is still Top Host without being three sheets to the wind every night. As the two of you drink, you share your childhood stories, and he thinks living in a fishing village sounds like fun, with surprise items floating to shore that make every day feel like a treasure hunt.
He tells you that he's already been sold off to Yoshiwara since he was old enough to remember, and so he's always been curious about life outside of these gates. While he has no complaints about his current situation, he isn't exactly ecstatic about it either.
As he gets more inebriated, he studies your face and says that you will become an oiran very soon, you've got what it takes. Men will be fighting for you, and he advises you to *snort in the face* of those you don't like, until you find the one that you really want. You are his chosen pawn in the Kuro Yoshiwara Game, and he wants to see you achieve happiness with your own two hands.
Finally, he plants a couple of drunken kisses on you before passing out... Whoever said romance was dead? ;3

Kuro Yoshiwara Melancholia 3 Translation
Tumblr media
An ukiyo-e artist who loves sweet bread and keeps a parakeet as a pet. He takes part in the Kuro Yoshiwara Game for the chance to paint a picture of a mermaid, a subject he has always wanted to paint. He has a calm personality and lives a carefree life, but also has a habit of teasing others. Although he doesn’t have much money, he doesn't seem to be particularly concerned about this.

Chapter 4
It has been one week since Umibouzu's news for Kagura. Kagura had been hiding at Yourozuya this whole time, she had been avoiding everyone. Kagura wasn't ready to tell everybody and she most definitely wasn't ready to tell a certain sadist about her engagement. Gintoki and Shinpachi had enough of Kagura's behavior.
”Kagura-chan, seriously, you have to get some fresh air and eventually you have to tell your friends about your...situation,” Shinpachi said to a sulking Kagura. ”Yes, and your absence from our jobs will be cut out of your paycheck, too bad,” Gintoki said behind his desk. ”We don't get paid you idiot!” Kagura and Shinpachi yelled in unison.
”Pachi-boy, don't get so worked up or your human might stop working,” Kagura said. ”I am a human, not glasses!” Shinpachi yelled. ”Yare, yare, Shinpachi it's not that you aren't a human, it's just that glasses take over your personality, it's only natural,” Gintoki said while hiding a bugger under his desk.
”Yes, and while your glasses are your personality, your human form is kind of your pet that you can drive around the city,” Kagura said. ”But...!” Shinpachi began. ”Yes Paches-kun, every straight glasses of a show needs a human to look smarter, it's only natural,” Gintoki said while flicking a bugger to Kagura's hair.
”Yes, Shinpaches, I think...” Kagura began as she was now shoving Gintoki's bugger back in his nose. Glasses, I mean Pachishin, I mean Meganeman was...oh what was his name again. ”You too author, are you kidding me?” Glasses yelled loudly. *The Shinpachi program has stopped working*
Meanwhile, Captain Okita was patrolling the city. He had been looking for Kagura for a week now. Every time he visited the Yorozuya shop. Gintoki and Shinpachi said that they were busy with some job and Kagura was unavailable. She hadn't been in the park with Sadaharu, she hadn't visited the riverbank either. It was very abnormal for Kagura.
Is she avoiding me, that would be a really shitty move from her part, I mean I thought she would be picking on me for my...behavior. Sougo thought. Maybe I'll try the Yourozuya shop again, she has to be there sometimes. Sougo decided in his mind.
*zzzhhh* ”Sougo, are you slacking off again?” I got a report from Yamazaki that you were out of your assigned patrol area.” Hijikata said through a walkie-talkie. ”Go die in a corner Hijibaka-san.” Sougo said and turned the device off. Oh, Yamazaki, you little snitch, I'll have to come up with a nice punishment for you. Sougo though with a sly smile.
Kagura was playing with her hair, she was thinking about her upcoming week. My last week as Edo's most desired bachelorette. I haven't seen any of my friends in a week. I really miss them and... ”Hello! Earth to Kagura!” Gintoki said. Kagura snapped out of her thoughts and looked at Gintoki. ”We have a job today, do you want to come with us?”He asked. ”Nah, I was thinking that I would go meet my friends,” Kagura answered.
”That's nice, do you mean the amazon, the goriwoman, and the s/m stalker?” Gintoki asked with a sigh. ”Yup, my friends,” Kagura said, slightly amused of Gintoki's accurate descriptions. ”Have fun Kagura-chan!” Shinpachi said while the two men and Sadaharu exited the shop. Kagura hopped up and went to change into her white and short cheongsam with red flower embroidment.
Kagura was about to leave, she slid the front door open and jumped at the sudden sight. There was a charming tall man at the door. Kagura's heart skipped a beat, the sadist was the last person she expected to see. Sougo was looking at her quite gently which made Kagura's feet go spaghetti.
”What the hell are you doing here jerk?” Kagura asked while she regained her confident posture. ”I...um...came to see you, I have something to tell you,” Sougo said to Kagura with a slightly nervous voice, he still was unsure around her. Sougo wasn't ready to take another hit to his ego. Kagura was looking at Sougo's face, which truly was quite handsome and very distracting.
”Can I come in?” Sougo asked politely. No-one is home, oh no no, I can't let him in. Kagura though, while crossing her arms. ”Nope, sorry, go somewhere else to slack off, yes? Bye!” Kagura said while sliding the door close, slipping past Sougo and jumping off the balcony.
Again, this shit is unbearable. She acted as a stupid brat again. Sougo thought with anger in his heart. ”You are breaking a police officer's heart you monster girl!” Sougo yelled after Kagura. ”Yeah, yeah, go die asshole!” Kagura yelled from afar. Sougo was angry, he decided to distract his feelings by finding Yamazaki and giving him some kind of a lesson.
Kagura's heart was pounding again because of the sadist. He is so annoying, popping up at our place without any warning, damn him. Kagura thought. It was a Tuesday afternoon. Kagura knew her friends had a tea party every Tuesday afternoon at Otae's place. Kagura was running to the Shimura residence with full speed.
”Tsukuyo, you need to understand that Gintoki is and always will be mine,” Sarutobi said to Tsukuyo and flicked her purple locks. Tsukuyo rolled her eyes as and sighed. ”Ladies, ladies, what about chicks before dic-” Otae was saying as somebody burst inside the house.
”Kagura-chan!” All three ladies said together. Kagura was huffing, but she managed to say: ”Huff, hello Tsukki, Sa-chan, anego...huff huff, I came here with news...” ”Please sit down and have some tea first Kagura-chan,” Otae said and made Kagura sit down. Shinpachi had already informed Otae, but she waited for Kagura to come to her when she was ready to talk about it.
After a plate full of snacks made by Sarutobi (not Otae, thank god) and six cups of tea were devoured by Kagura, she went silent. ”Is there something you want to tell us Kagura-chan?” Otae asked with a happy smile. Kagura looked at her earth sister and nodded a couple of times.
”Is everything okay Kagura-chan?” Tsukuyo inquired. ”Well, I'm getting married, in a few weeks actually,” Kagura said neutrally. Tsukuyo and Sarutobi both gasped and kept looking at Kagura. Otae stayed calm and gave Kagura a knowing nod. Oh, Shinpachi must have told her already. Kagura thought.
”WHAT, IN FEW WEEKS? But I was supposed to get married first, with Gintoki of course.” Sarutobi cried. ”To whom Kagura, why haven't we met him? Or...do we know him already?” Tsukuyo asked while gently touching Kagura's arm. ”You don't know him, he is a notable Yato, he even has his own group, so I'm going to become the queen of the Kuro Orochi,” Kagura said with a cheerful voice.
”Well, that is surprising, but why haven't you introduced him to us, we need to approve your boyfriend...I mean fianceé,” Tsukuyo said. ”Umm...How should I put this, I haven't met him myself either,” Kagura said while stroking her imaginary beard. ”WHAT?!” Tsukuyo and Sarutobi yelled. ”It has been arranged a long time ago, that's what Shinpachi told me,” Otae said.
Kagura nodded as an answer. ”Why haven't you told us earlier, you selfish bitch!” Sarutobi yelled at Otae. A vein started popping on Otae's forehead. ”Calm down guys, we should focus on Kagura-chan,” Tsukuyo said, she was as caring as ever. ”It's okay guys, I'm not 100% happy about this engagement, but it is happening, I know why this arrangement has been made and I'll just have to accept it,” Kagura said with a calm voice.
”You are acting like an adult. Kagura-chan, I thought you would be booking a flight to somewhere you couldn't be found,” Otae said to Kagura. ”Yeah, the gorilla woman is right, I don't think I could be so calm in that situation,” Sarutobi said. ”It's just there's one problem...” Kagura said while she touched that sensitive part of her neck.
”I'm afraid that I can't fall in love with my future husband because...I...” Kagura said quietly. ”Because you are so inexperienced?” ”Because you don't know how to cook?” ”Because you are so violent and boyish?” Questions were flying at Kagura and she didn't hear who said what.
”What are you talking about? I'm not talking about why he wouldn't love me, it's the complete opposite situation,” Kagura said slightly agitated. Kagura's words went to deaf ears, now she was getting tips and advice on how to become the dream wife.
Sarutobi: ”You need more experience in bedroom skills. Men love when you just let them do anything they want to you without resistance. Just like Gin-chan is always torturing me with his words of ”passion”. Just put on a skimpy lingerie and lay on the kitchen table everytime they get home from work. That's the key to a working marriage.”
Otae: ”A way to a man's heart is by cooking of course. I'll promise you that in a few weeks I'll teach you to be the most versatile and absolute best cook in the whole galaxy. Also, you have to make him buy you Dom Perignon every night from my cabaret bar, that'll make me...umm him very happy. That's the key to a working marriage.”
Tsukuyo: ”Umm...well, it's not so hard if you just get drunk every time you two are alone. That's the key to a working marriage.” Kagura facepalmed herself and thought: Without a doubt, these three must be the worst pieces of advice I could get in Edo. At least they mean well, I hope.
”Okay, thank you for your...advices...I'll keep them in mind. My fianceé arrives to Edo in one week. So this is my last week as a single woman,” Kagura said with a slight smile. ”We have to celebrate! Strippers! Or maybe just Gintoki, a private show for me. What a great idea Kagura-chan!” Sarutobi screamed. Otae was smiling and Tsukuyo was shaking her head. ”Hey Kagura, if you want to do something fun tonight, I could use some night patrol help in Yoshiwara,” Tsukuyo said while lighting up her kiseru.
”Oh, I would love that Tsukki!” Kagura said with a genuine smile. ”I love to beat up stupid drunkards, I'm in.” Kagura said and got up. ”Alright, meet me at 9:00 pm at Hinowa's” Tsukuyo said, she thanked for the tea and left. Sarutobi was already gone, her day job as Gintoki's personal stalker needed her attention. Otae smiled for Kagura and said: ”Was there any other reason for you to be unsure of your marriage?”
Kagura knew Otae would see right through her lies so she said: ”Yes, there is, but I don't want to think about it right now, is that okay Anego?” ”Of course it is Kagura-chan, just know that I'll be there for you if you need me,” Otae said with her usual smile. That made Kagura happy and she hugged Otae tightly as a thank you, then she left to get ready for her night patrol.
Gintoki, Shinpachi, and Sadaharu had all returned home while Kagura was gone. ”Hi guys!” Kagura cheered as she walked inside the Yorozuya. ”Somebody is in a good mood,” Shinpachi said. Kagura smiled to him as an answer. ”Oh, Gin-chan, Sa-chan had some weird stripping plan for you, so keep your eyes open, or closed,” Kagura informed. Gintoki massaged his forehead and gave Kagura a nod. ”Don't spoil the surprise Kagura!” a voice was heard inside the ceiling.
”I'm going on a night patrol with Tsukki. That will make me think about something other that sadi...aahmm...sa...Sadaharu being all alone here, uh-huh,” Kagura said while rubbing the back of her head. Both men were too busy doing their own thing that neither noticed her small slip. I didn't say sadist, no I didn't. Kagura thought.
Kagura had a red (obvious choice) kimono that was quite short, but she didn't mind, she was very comfortable with every clothing that made it easier to kick stuff (and sometimes she was quite oblivious about her sex appeal). Every time Kagura wore a kimono, she put her hair in one big braid, it was fun to whip people with it. After getting her hair done, she was on her way to Yoshiwara.
Tsukuyo, Kagura, and hyakka had a busy night that day. There were a lot of drunk idiots on the move. Kagura was enjoying herself and that made Tsukuyo very happy. At the dawn, Kagura and Tsukuyo were sitting on a rooftop of a tall building.
”Are you going to miss earth?” Tsukuyo asked. Kagura hummed. ”Are you going to miss everybody here? Tsukuyo asked again. ”Yeah...” Kagura said with a quiet voice. ”Hmm...Kagura-chan, are you going to miss someone specific, maybe someone from the Shinsengumi?” Tsukuyo asked further. Kagura's cheeks went all red and she said: ”No-no, of course not, I'm not going to miss sadist, WHAT? I didn't say that, you said that, what..?”
Tsukuyo smiled gently and said to a flushed Kagura: ”Your secret is safe with me, my lips are sealed,” Kagura calmed down and smiled for the leader of hyakka. ”Uh, I don't know what are you talking about, but your secret is safe with me too, Tsukki,” Kagura said with a wink. Tsukuyo looked at Kagura with a light tint of pink on her cheeks. ”I've seen how you look at Gin-chan. It's okay Tsukki, but I have to get going now,” Kagura said and she began to jump from roof to roof. ”I don't know what you are talking about!” Tsukuyo flustered.
Kagura had so much fun night patrolling, she decided to do it every night. A week passed and it was the night before she would meet her fianceé. Yoshiwara was full of people, even some members of the Shinsengumi were there to do some big arrest. Kagura saw the familiar uniforms everywhere and was secretly hoping that her rival would be there too.
Captain Okita of the Shinsengumi was ordered to be on guard as the arrest was going to happen inside some shady love hotel. He was bored out of his mind, he really didn't like being in Yoshiwara. Then he heard a man and a woman argue in a nearby back alley. Sougo decided to inspect the situation, and that's when things got really interesting.
Kagura was yelling at some tall drunkard that he should go home and stop harassing women. ”You don't have enough money and you don't have enough manners. So go home and get some sleep, yes?” Kagura stated. The man was stupid enough to try to kiss Kagura. She froze at the sudden action. Out of nowhere, the man was pushed away from Kagura and he had a katana pointed at his neck.
”Get away from her, there are prettier courtesans available for you,” Sougo said while his crimson eyes were glowing under the red lights. The man squeaked weirdly and left running. Sougo put his katana back in its scabbard. ”No need to thank me China, I only saved your ass for the millionth time,” Sougo said without looking at Kagura.
”That situation was completely under my control, you just were being a glory hog as usual. And what do you mean prettier courtesans, I have mami's supermodel genes and I am gorgeous.” Kagura said with pure confidence. Sougo looked at Kagura. She was a sight to be seen, her hair matched her kimono perfectly. That kimono was not for everyone, but the long-legged Kagura pulled it off.
”So are you a prostitute now?” Sougo inquired. Kagura stomped her leg to the ground. ”Of course not! But that's not the point,” She hissed. Sougo glanced at Kagura and tilted his head slightly. ”I meant that my beauty is flawless, any man would be lucky to have me,” Kagura bragged. Sougo huffed and said: ”Oh, so you were hitting on that man?”
Sougo took a step closer to her. ”N-no, I wasn't,” Kagura mumbled. As Sougo was getting closer to her. Kagura's mouth was dry again, all it took was his presence. Kagura had to back away from him, only to be stopped by a wall. Sougo smirked and slowly closed their distance. Sougo pressed his right arm on the left side of Kagura's head and leaned into her right ear: ”You are way too beautiful to be touched by a man like that.”
Kagura's cheeks blushed immediately. Sougo had one question for Kagura that he needed to ask. ”Where have you been China? Are you avoiding me?” Sougo asked and shifted to look into her eyes. Being close like that felt intoxicating for both of them. ”Huh?” Kagura breathed. She was resisting the urge to tackle him down and kiss his stupid mouth.
”You know China, you are really breaking my heart for not answering my questions.” Sougo murmured to her. Kagura glanced into his tempting eyes and swallowed slowly. This was the smart moment to tell him about her engagement, but her brain wasn't working properly.
Kagura grabbed Sougo's jacket and pulled him a little closer. They were looking at each other with half-lidded eyes. Under the red lights, even a hidden yearning can rise up. There was an undeniable attraction that was four years into making. ”Sadist...” Kagura whispered. Sougo wanted this feeling to last forever. Having Kagura so close to him, almost close enough to taste.
”China...this time, let me kiss you,” Sougo whispered into Kagura's ear. Kagura's breathing got heavier as she heard his demanding plea. Kagura closed her eyes and parted her lips as to say something. Sougo tilted his head, nothing could stop him this time around. Sougo closed his eyes and went for her lips.
”Sadist...uh...I'm engaged.” Kagura managed to say right before their lips touched. Sougo's eyes popped open and he backed away. Kagura was looking at him with wide eyes. ”You, WHAT?” Sougo asked loudly. ”I'm engaged, I just learned about it two weeks ago,” Kagura tried to explain.
Sougo turned his back on Kagura, he didn't know what to say. ”Sadist?” Kagura called him but didn't get any response. They stood there for a minute in total silence. Kagura began to feel really awkward and she decided to leave. ”I'm sorry,” Kagura said and ran away.
Sougo heard her steps getting further away. He lost all feeling on his feet and he collapsed on his knees. A small teardrop slid down his cheek onto the ground. Sougo couldn't believe it, first, he thought it was some sick joke, but no, Kagura seemed to be serious. Why is this happening? I've been saying that China is breaking my heart for doing something stupid, but now she really broke it. Fuck.
”Sougo! What are you doing back there?” Hijikata yelled from the street. Sougo got up quickly, wiped his eyes just in case. ”I'm taking a shit here, some privacy would be nice.” Sougo hissed. ”Well, you have to finish later we are done here, let's get going!” Hijikata said. ”Yeah, let's go,” Sougo said and walked past Hijikata while hiding his hurt eyes behind his bangs. Hijikata saw that something was wrong, but he knew better to leave him alone.

Drama CD: [黒吉原メランコリア] The First Night: Agumo Hibari - Part 2
Tumblr media
[Disc 2]
[Prologue] A sober Hibari apologises for his drunken behaviour and waxes poetic about the sweetness of your lips. Since that night, you have exceeded his expectations and made a name for yourself in Yoshiwara - mastering all the basic skills from tea ceremony to literacy..
He regrets his own myopia in using you as a chesspiece in his game. As the #1 male oiran, he thought that he could resist the charms of any girl. But the human heart is unpredictable, and he has developed real feelings for you...
Hibari visits your room and informs you to get ready to make your debut. You're all like (ಠ_ಠ) ,... but before that, he has an important announcement to make:
Once you take your first client, the Game would officially begin. He confesses the whole setup and rules of the game to you, as well as the rumours that led to its conception.
Legend has it that a race of mermaids with the blood of the Happyaku-bikuni [link] possess superhuman life force, and their tears can bring eternal life and prevent death. However, the mermaid saviour has to pay the price of losing her voice forever. (Now where have I heard this idea before⁇ *cough*TheLittleMermaid*cough*)
During the Normanton Incident [link], a merchant vessel capsized near Kishuu-oki (present-day Wakayama). All the foreign passengers were saved but the Japanese passengers perished. This was chalked up to racial discrimination, but insiders claim that the ship was overturned by mermaids plotting to rescue *one of their own* who was aboard the ship.
After you floated ashore to the fishing village where you grew up, rumours spread among the locals that *you* are the passenger mermaid who caused the shipwreck. Out of fear of further angering the mermaids, they avoided publicly discussing the subject.
A local fisherman, your step-father, noticed that you are a good-looking child. He took you in and raised you, planning to sell you off to some brothel once you reach a suitable age and fetch a good price. This is where Hibari comes in: he found your step-father after much investigation and sent a pimp his way to acquire you.
Hibari planned and joined in his own game for the purpose of raising Yoshiwara's profile in the public eye and bringing in more business. His efforts have attracted five other participants from wealthy and powerful backgrounds. Hence, he himself has no interest in the veracity of the legend nor in eternal life. His only aim is for the other players to fight over you and create a tabloid-worthy sensation.
As such, your best bet now is to end the game a.s.a.p. and find one of the participants (excluding him) to marry yourself off to - in this sense both of you have a common goal, and he's willing to do whatever it takes to help you.
...After hearing all this, you are visibly shaken and can't even concentrate on your flower arranging lesson anymore. Hibari is all like 'SON I AM DISAPPOINT' and sends you off to bed. He's all confused because he thought you would be happy to be leaving Yoshiwara soon...?
*
Next day, he gives you a pretty dress and sends you to some steak restaurant to learn how to use a knife and fork... with Sakurai Takahiro('s character). Meanwhile he stays behind to see a client. Having to part with him for a day makes you a #sadpanda, so he decides to come and cheer you up when you get back.
You come home late, and he feigns cheerfulness when he hears that you got along well with Ta-kun. 'Everything is going according to plan... but why does it make me angry when I imagine her smiling at some other dude?' *punches wall RAWR*
*
The time has finally come, he announces that you will receive your first client: Sakurai Takahiro('s character). BUT... his announcement gets hijacked by a gang invasion - it's the shady characters from an earlier episode, here for the mermaid tears. Hibari beckons you to run and tell the guards, while he stays behind and buys time for your escape.
He trash-talks the bad guys, and they slash him with their katana and flee. (I imagine their thought process was something like: 'OMG does this guy EVER shut up??? *stab stab*) As he lay dying, he mocks himself: for giving up his own life to save you, yet not being able to confess his feelings to you directly. 'And so it is. My mad skillz are useless when faced with the woman I truly love.'
Later, you come back and tell him that the gang have been captured by the guards. With his last breath, he confesses that he's always loved you. He's glad to have protected you and confident that you will do just fine on your own. With trembling lips, you grant him one final kiss... and your tears touch his mouth. In that instant, he became... THE HULK!!!!
...No srsly. After a month-long sleep, he wakes from a dream where his body is getting dissolved by the waves of the ocean. To his great shock, you've lost the ability to speak. He becomes emotional and laments why you made such a huge sacrifice and chose a scumbag like him, instead of the other more eligible game participants.
He confesses his love for you and says that he can't imagine continuing his job as oiran and embracing other women ever again. He proposes that the two of you to escape from Yoshiwara and start a new life somewhere far away. Of course, you agree, and he makes a pinky promise to spend the rest of his life making you happy.
(He also takes your virginity,... but never mind about that XD.)
And thus, with his life savings as Top Host, the two of you begin a semi-nomadic life, skipping town every time rumours/scandals of the Yoshiwara escape start to spread. At the end, Hibari says that the day you saved his life was a rebirth for him. 'While I may not have a hometown, I will always have a home - which is wherever you are.'

‘Mermaid’ by Toriumi. Hot dayum.
[Thoughts] Let’s be real here, Hibari is kind of a dick. I mean, I would’ve accepted if he had believed the legend and sought Nanami out in order to obtain eternal life. That would have been a more excusable reason than ‘creating a scandal to attract business’. He almost forfeited Nanami’s future and *whole life* purely for his little publicity stunt. In that sense it’s not too much to ask that he almost sacrificed his life for her.
That said, the scene where he was dying and asking for a last kiss really got me. Toriumi sounded like he was really dying XDDD. (Noooo Sensei pls don’t die T_T) His emotional outburst after waking up and finding out that Nanami has lost her voice is also really touching and almost made me forget that IT’S ALL HIS FAULT.
On another note, I took the time to research a bit into the historical accuracy of the story, because (1) Nanami seemed a bit old to be a trainee, and (2) she was allowed to stay in Yoshiwara for many months without receiving any clients or making any money. Fwiw, trainees had a wide age range, although after the Edo period they were generally expected to serve clients during their training period. So... thanks Rejet for protecting your chastity, I guess?
Although there’s still the question of convention - a male oiran taking on a female shinzou - and the way Hibari talks: referring to himself as 「俺」 and using informal speech (あんなもんじゃねぇ, etc.), which does not seem to match the high-class etiquette and prestige of the oiran.
(To be fair, ‘high-class’ isn’t exactly a concept that I would associate with Toriumi’s characters - they usually give off the impression of being dignified cool on the surface and perverted wild at heart, kind of a 「裏腐設定」 if you will XDD.)
All things considered, this is still one of if not the best story I’ve come across of recent note. I will definitely be looking into the other discs of this series - esp. Guy #4 voiced by Shimono Hiro, the (psycho?) dollmaker who wants to make a lifelike replica of the heroine.
*fingers crossed* Please let him be yandere, pleaseee let him be yandere...

[kuro yoshiwara melancholia] vol. 2: tenshou tatsuki - track three
Tumblr media
3; a brief dream
listen along・masterpost
                                                                                      ✿
You’re back?
Goodness.
You should have just asked me to help.
You don’t need to be so embarrassed all the time.
How was it, by the way?
Did you manage to use the shower?
I see.
Last time you struggled with regulating the temperature and the water pressure.
One of the servants told me you were quite lost.
You’ve come along well.
Now, hurry up and join me.
You’ll catch a cold if you don’t dry your hair soon.
Your hair is so soft.
It feels odd touching it.
It looks like silk threads under the morning light filtering through the lace curtains.
Look, it’s sparkling.
How beautiful.
When you rely on me like this it just makes me want to tease you.
Like this…
I never even imagined I’d come to enjoy myself this much with you.
At first, I didn’t even want to take your hand.
If anything, I treated you awfully, just because you were a prostitute.
I was born into a military family and raised strictly as their successor.
I saw everyone around me as either an enemy or someone to scorn.
I couldn’t see the benefit in mixing with people of a lower class.
You were a prime example of that - as a woman in the Yoshiwara district.
But you’re the one who changed me.
Just touching you like this makes me feel at peace.
For someone as fastidious as I was to long for the warmth of another human...
I wonder how my father would react if he saw me now.
Sometimes I wonder...
                                                                                      ✿
This is where the party is being held.
Teito Hotel.
You must have heard of it, at least?
This is the hotel all important people stay at when visiting Tokyo, whether from elsewhere in Japan or from abroad.
That expression…
Are you telling me you’ve never heard of it?
I can’t believe you…
Just so you know, you can’t act that way inside the hotel.
You’re expected to act as the fiancée of the eldest son of the Tenshou family.
I went to the trouble of making you at least look like a member of a high ranking family.
Please try your best not to mess up and ruin everything.
Now, let’s go.
Follow me.
                                                                                      ✿
How is it?
Is this hall not magnificent?
It seems nobody has any complaints.
Now. Give me your hand.
Oi.
I’m sure I just told you not to mess up.
What’s with your attitude?
It’s common knowledge that I should be escorting you.
Now, give me your hand before the other guests grow suspicious.
Are you trying to embarrass me?
I hope you know I don’t actually want to take your hand.
But I’m ignoring that feeling and offering mine regardless.
Don’t forget that.
Good.
Do as I say.
Not that I’d want to touch your disgusting hand if I had the choice.
Ah, perfect timing.
It’s begun.
The tune.
It’s a sign that the most important guests have arrived.
And so, I want you to dance a Viennese Waltz with me.
Okay?
Of course.
You’re currently the daughter of a decent family.
You should at least be able to dance a waltz.
I won’t be able to introduce you to my father, if you can’t.
Don’t worry.
I didn’t exactly expect you to be able to do any kind of western dance.
No prostitute would be so refined as to know anything more than a simple Nihon-Buyo.
Just leave your body to me.
Don’t try to do anything.
I should at least be able to make it look like you know how to waltz.
Of course they are.
I want them to look at you.
This party isn’t only a social event.
It’s a place to appraise one another.
Right now, you’re nothing more than my plus one.
But you’re not a simple plus one.
You have to act as a plus one worthy of me.
Now, we’ll begin.
First, put your left hand on my shoulder.
No, don’t squeeze it.
Just lightly place it there.
Yes.
Lean into me a little more.
You’re too far away from me right now.
It’s unnatural.
But don’t get too close.
Next is your right hand.
Take my left hand.
Straighten your back.
Make sure not to slump your shoulders.
Good.
Now you just need to move your feet in time with the music.
We’ll start.
Yes, don’t panic.
I don’t mind if you move slowly.
Just move in the same direction as me.
Step by step.
One, two, three.
I suppose you’re doing well for your first attempt.
Better than I expected, at least.
That short dress was the right choice.
At least in that you won’t trip over your own skirt.
We have to turn soon.
I’ll guide you so just spin in place.
Don’t forget to keep in time with the music.
You don’t have time to panic.
Go.
Now.
Good, well done. That was good.
At this rate, we’ll be able to fool everyone.
Is what I thought…
There’s just one more problem.
It’s your face.
Can you at least look like you’re having fun?
I know you’re focussing on the dance as hard as you can but your face is extremely stiff.
They’ll think you strange if you don’t change that.
You’re dancing with your beloved fiancé, after all.
At least smile a little.
Hurry up and do it.
What on earth is that expression?
It’s even more unnatural…
Whatever, I suppose.
To the people over there, it probably looks like you’re smiling.
I’ll be the one in trouble if I give you too many orders and the quality of your dance falls.
We’re going to dance some more.
At least one more tune.
                                                                                      ✿
That should be enough.
Oi, how long do you plan on leaning on me like that?
Hurry up and let go.
My clothes will start to smell.
Make sure you don’t forget.
We’re merely pretending.
If possible, I want as little to do with you as possible.
Ah, it seems the address is about to begin.
Hurry, come this way.
                                                                                     ✿
You should be able to hear well from here.
Don’t take a glass yet.
Can you see those seats over there?
The row on the left is reserved for the Imperial Navy.
The person at the very back is the Navy General - my father.
Look.
He’s prominent, even in a place like this.
Such magnificent dignity.
Such dignity only comes with decoration.
No matter how high their position is, none of the weak diplomats in this room can replicate his aura.
There’s nothing I’m more proud of than my father and the fact that I’m his son.
He’s here.
It’s finally my father’s turn.
At the end of the address, there’ll be a toast.
You don’t need to make contact with my glass.
Just take one of the glasses and lift it into the air when he indicates to do so.
Understood?
When this is over, I’ll introduce you to him.
Be careful not t--
What?!
Father…
Father!
Father, father!
No way…
Oi!
Give me your tears.
Right now!
There’s still time…
We can still save him.
Hurry up!
Did you not hear me tell you to hurry up?!
I don’t have time to play pretend with you anymore.
I don’t have time!
Can’t you tell?
So what?!
Hurry up and cry!
Or what?!
Will you not cry unless you get hurt?!
Then..
Right now!
Shit.
I’m a fool for expecting anything from you.
Move!
Father!
Pull yourself together!
Father!
Someone…
Call a doctor!
Anyone…!

[kuro yoshiwara melancholia] vol. 2: tenshou tatsuki - track two
Tumblr media
2; a desire for tears
listen along・masterpost
                                                                                       ✿
The rain is quite horrible.
You’re finally here.
This place is rather sluggish, isn’t it?
Maybe it’s just cultural differences.
I’m not exactly pleased about being made to wait for a harlot.
I assume the fact you’ve brought this girl with you means she’s the one we spoke of.
Hm. That’s you, huh?
Then take me to your establishment right away.
                                                                                      ✿
What is this place?
It’s like a cage.
You want me to evaluate this prostitute here?
And what on earth is that?
Why are you wearing a blindfold?
What bad taste!
Do the staff here really believe that will incite lust in their customers?
How foolish.
I, at least, now want nothing more than to finish our talk and leave immediately.
But… Hmm… I see…
I could indeed say you look quite attractive like this.
Not that I’m surprised; most high-ranking courtesan at least look good.
Oh, I apologise.
I’m Tatsuki Tenshou.
I’m a Commander in the Imperial Navy.
You said your name was Nanami, did you not?
Hm.
But I didn’t come all the way to Kirarou to ask that.
I’ll be direct.
Is it true you have mermaid blood?
So you deflect my question?
But there’s no need to hide it.
For your own sake.
Yes, that’s right.
If it is indeed true, I plan to pay off the rest of your debts immediately.
How does that sound?
I’m the eldest son of the Tenshou family.
You have no objections, of course?
But I do hope you don’t misunderstand.
I’m not interested in you at all.
Not your face.
Not your body.
Not even that infamous unforgettably beautiful voice of yours.
All of those things you use to seduce and deceive customers have not even a drop of value for me.
I don’t have such dirty hobbies as taking harlots as concubines or wives.
I only want one thing.
The power of immortality hidden in your tears.
I have... personal reasons.
I need it immediately, no matter what.
If you really do have such a power, of course.
Are you really a mermaid?
Or is that a lie to make the game more fun?
Can you tell me?
Unfortunately, I don’t have much time.
If you continue to feign ignorance…
I may have to change my methods.
Of course, I would usually never talk to a person like you.
I’m making a special exception.
Women like you enjoy being humiliated like this, no?
Then it can’t be helped.
I’ll do as you wish.
Cry for me in return.
I’m resigning myself to the disgrace of being with you.
As reluctant as I am, I have to do this to achieve my goal.
That’s why I came to Kirarou.
As a player in this foul Kuroyoshiwara Game.
Now, come closer to me.
This is a trade.
There’s no need to hold back.
You want me to stop?
You say such odd things.
Are you saying you find my courting unpleasant?
Then there’s nothing for it.
The fastest way to verify these rumours is to make you cry.
Then maybe I should just threaten you like this.
It’ll be much easier to cry if you’re terrified.
Ah, just so you know, any sudden movements and you’ll get hurt.
You’ll be lucky if you just get hurt.
You look scared.
Then hurry up and cry like I told you!
I haven’t got time for this!
Not a single tear.
Not a word either.
You have more guts than I assumed.
You merely look weak.
Just as I thought.
Women in places like this always end up having grit.
You’re just like them.
I expected as much of someone who leads men around by the nose for a living.
In other words, I need a better plan if I want your tears.
I’ll leave it here for tonight.
Even if I was just threatening you, I don’t want to be seen waving a blade around.
I might lose my place in the game if I’m seen hurting you.
But I will make you cry soon.
Those odd tears of immortality.
I’ll tell you this now:
Don’t misunderstand me.
I won’t hurt you as long as you work with me.
The higher you decide, the larger your reward will be.
Listen to the rain and think hard tonight.
Then.
Goodbye.
That’s right.
I have no time.
                                                                                      ✿
Why is she going to the bathhouse at such a time as this?
That woman…
Huh? That’s…
Speak of the devil, as they say.
Oi, stop.
It won’t take long.
Oi, Nanami.
What great timing.
I just arrived at Kirarou now.
To talk to you, of course.
I came all this way and you weren’t even there.
You almost greatly wasted my time.
There’s no need to be so clearly on guard.
Your attitude really is something.
Did you forget what I said already?
So, are you going to work with me?
Tell me.
Silence, again.
Well, I thought that might be the case.
Then…
I’ll give you this.
It’s an invitation.
The papers haven’t stopped talking about it.
There’ll be a ceremony celebrating the launching of a new battleship soon.
A party, one might say.
Finally, Japan has made a ship which won’t lose to that of the Great Powers.
You’re not against celebrating the improvement of your country, are you?
Well, telling an uncultured woman such as you about such things is meaningless.
However, after the ceremony by the harbour, there’ll be a party at a nearby hotel.
Of course, it’s not just any party.
It’s a celebration of this country’s progress.
The prime minister and other elite bureaucrats will be in attendance.
My father will be leading the toast, as a fleet admiral in the Imperial Navy.
You understand what this means, of course?
You really are clueless.
There is no greater honour than leading such a toast.
My father’s honour is connected to the whole Tenshou family’s honour.
There won’t be many prouder days for me.
I’m going out of my way to invite you to witness such a moment.
What a privilege!
I know you’re confused.
It’s simple.
This is my new plan.
To obtain your tears, of course.
If threatening you does not work, then I’ll simply charm you into doing as I wish.
But that doesn’t change that I have no time.
And so, I decided the fastest way would be for you to have fun.
How is that?
It’s not an awful affair, right?
And it follows the rules of the game.
There are 5 other competitors in this game.
I don’t know who they are but I’ll lose everything if they sweep you off your feet before I can.
So I merely have to charm you to the point they don’t stand a chance.
I told you, did I not?
I’ve resolved myself to obtain your tears.
I’ll do anything to achieve my goal.
I’ll bear any pain and use any method I can.
If you attend this party, you’ll understand just how much of an honour it is to be under my care.
Even if what I want is not you, but your tears.
There is only one problem.
Usually, it would be impossible for a harlot to sneak into such a splendid affair.
I assume even you understand this?
But I have a plan.
I am going to introduce you as the person I have promised my future to.
Of course, to my father too.
Oi. Don’t misunderstand.
This is simply a means to an end.
I’d never choose someone such as you as my fiancée.
But introducing you as such will give you the rank you need to attend.
You’d be the fiancée of the eldest son of the Tenshou family.
Nobody would be able to disrespect you.
Do you understand?
I’m willing to go this far to allow you to live a fairy-tale-like moment.
Only I am able to do this.
Even if the other contenders in this game were my family, they would be unable to.
You’re too surprised to talk?
If you choose me now, I’ll give you even more marvellous experiences.
If you cry now and hand over your tears, I wouldn’t even mind marrying you.
People will eventually accept you as some young woman I found and proposed to.
I don’t long for love.
So I don’t care who my partner is.
As long as I am compensated, of course.
Oh? You have no interest in becoming my wife?
So you don’t mind being swept away by some doubtful stranger?
Or would you like to spend your entire life here?
You really are a foolish woman.
Why don’t you stop this stubbornness?
I don’t know if it’s some technique used by prostitutes but it won’t work on me.
Whatever.
I gave you the invitation.
I’ll come to Kirarou to collect you on Friday evening.
Prepare yourself and wait.
I arranged for some trunks to be carried to your room.
They contain dresses and shoes; try them on as you wish when you return.
Yes, I knew you wouldn’t have an opulent dress to wear to a party.
I chose them all.
They’re all first-class goods, fitting for my fiancée.
I’ll be the one to suffer if you turn up in rags at the greatest moment the Tenshou family has faced so far.
And so I decided.
Make sure you dress so you don’t embarrass me or my father.
I bid you adieu.
My mermaid princess.

10; and once more
listen along・masterpost
                                                                               ✿
Well well.
Apparently even the people at Kuroyoshiwara are celebrating our victory.
I’m shocked.
Nanami.
I’m home.
What?
You look like you’ve seen a ghost.
Don’t worry.
I came home alive.
I came to collect you.
I already explained the situation to the owner.
This time, I paid to free you from here. I’m taking you home with me.
You’re not going to tell me you’ve changed your mind, are you?
Oi. Don’t hug me so tightly. It hurts.
More importantly, aren’t you going to talk to me? I made it all this way unharmed.
And I’m freeing you from here?
So it is true…
You lost your voice that day.
When you cried for me.
Ah, Nanami. You really are a fool.
But, thanks to that, I was able to come home to you.
I died because I was standing on deck during an enemy attack.
Or I should have died.
I felt something passing through my chest.
All my fellow officers died and the ship took serious damage.
If you think about it logically, there’s no way I should have survived.
But… I lived.
And that was when I remembered.
The day I left here, you cried for me.
Your power saved my life.
In return for your beautiful voice…
When I first met you, I begged you to cry without knowing the true price.
Your tears will only cast such a spell once.
But such a spell will cause you to lose your voice.
Learning that helped me understand why you wouldn’t cry.
I also realised I’d made you do something you could never take back.
I can’t return your voice to you.
I’m just a normal human.
I don’t have that kind of power.
There’s only one thing I can do.
I’ll continue to love you, as long as I have this life you’ve given me.
I’ll never let you go again.
I’ll make you happy.
                                                                               ✿
Is it late already?
Today is one of my rare days off.
Should we get up soon?
Hmm… Where’s my shirt?
Huh? Ah, this scar?
It doesn’t hurt anymore.
But whenever I look at it, I remember that I really should have died back then.
If it weren’t for your power, I mean.
So I’m grateful that I’m still alive from the bottom of my heart.
If I died, I wouldn’t be able to do this.
Come here.
Ah, that’s right.
Shall we go and see a movie later?
You seemed so interested last time we walked past the theatre.
Oh, but we planned to go to Ginza and look at dresses today.
There’ll be another Navy party soon, after all.
We should prioritise that.
By the way, one of my superior officers complimented you last time.
He said you’re not only beautiful but you’re a brilliant dancer.
What?
You seem quite happy.
I must admit, you have been working hard since you came here.
I know you’re working diligently so you don’t embarrass me, now that you’re the wife of the leader of the great and honourable Tenshou house.
But, you know, I don’t really like seeing you so happy because of a compliment from someone else.
I’m the only one who needs to make you smile.
Don’t forget that.
I’ll definitely make you happy.
Happier than anyone on earth.
Of course, I’ll be the one making you happy.
It’s pointless, otherwise.
And I’m confident I can do it.
We have all the time in the world, after all.
This time, I mean it.
Look forward to it.
My precious wife.

[kuro yoshiwara melancholia] vol. 2: tenshou tatsuki - track nine
Tumblr media
9; passing fate
listen along・masterpost
                                                                                ✿
We had all the time on earth.
That’s what I thought then, at least.
But… the truth was I only had moments left.
I didn’t realise it until a few days after our tea on the terrace…
                                                                                ✿
I see.
Then, the navy too?
I see…
Then we’ll be joining the fight soon?
The faster the better.
According to the report from the army, all looks well.
But we can’t underestimate the enemy, even if they’re in ruin.
The longer the fight goes on, the more time they’ll have to call reinforcements.
Then we’d be at a disadvantage.
We’d benefit from ending things as soon as we can.
Me? You want me to go?
I couldn’t be more pleased.
That ship was my father’s final accomplishment.
There is nothing I’d be more honoured to do than to lead it into war.
Even if I die, I’ll lead us to victory.
                                                                                ✿
Nanami. I’m coming in.
I haven’t visited here at night for a while but it’s just as lively as I remember.
Even the clerk seemed really busy.
No, I don’t want alcohol.
I came to talk to you about something important.
I don’t have much time.
The truth is…
I’m going to fight on the continent.
You know we’re engaged in war now, right?
I know you’re a prostitute but you should try and learn more about the state of the world you live in.
Don’t blame me if they punish you for being an unpatriotic traitor.
We’re currently fighting a war to gain more power on the continent.
Luckily for us, all the fighting is happening overseas.
For now, at least.
We don’t know what will happen after this next fight.
If we let down our guard and the enemy advance, even Tokyo could become a battleground.
You don’t want that to happen, right?
So we want to win as soon as possible and end the war.
The higher ups have decided to call the entire army to fight.
Including the navy, of course.
It has been decided that we’ll send several warships over.
I’ll be riding one called Kaizan.
The ship my father left behind.
I’ll be taking it to the front.
So I came to say goodbye to you tonight.
I don’t know when I’ll return.
I may never return at all.
I explained everything to the clerk before I came.
These are special circumstances, after all.
He said the owner won’t mind either, probably.
I don’t want to but… I’m leaving the game.
I don’t have a choice.
I have to go.
What?
Why are you looking at me like that?
I hope you’re not regretting your reluctance to give yourself to me.
But…
That might have been the right thing to do.
Even if you had chosen me, we would have had to part like this eventually.
Because I’m a soldier.
If a war begins, I have to give my all for the country.
I’m not happy about the idea that you might give yourself to someone else, but…
It can’t be helped.
I hope you find happiness.
That’s all I had to say.
I’ll be going now.
What… on earth are you doing?
Don’t be stupid.
I'm going, no matter what anyone says.
You’re the one who kept refusing me, aren’t you?
You’re too late…
Didn’t I tell you?
To become mine right away?
But you kept rejecting me.
I hope you regret it.
You finally said it…
That you love me.
I won.
But… It's too late.
Everything’s too late.
It’s too late!
I love you too!
I don’t want to give you to any other man.
But I have to go.
I can’t spend any more time with you.
This is the last time I’ll be able to hug you like this.
What’s wrong with you?
You always say one word too many.
Why couldn’t you just see me off silently?
You could have just pretended you don’t care about me at all, like you always do.
Then I couldn’t have given up…
I could have convinced myself you belonged to someone else and forgotten you.
But… I can’t do that now.
I wouldn’t be able to allow… anyone else… to hold you like this.
I’ve never wanted anyone like this before.
I’ve never wanted to touch and be touched by someone like this before.
At first, I felt the same way about you.
But, somewhere along the way, I… realised touching you like this feels good.
Your soft hair, the feeling of your skin, everything about you…
It’s all precious to me.
I’ll never be able to forget you now.
I almost wish I could stop time
If I could, I could hold you like this forever.
But I can’t…
So, at least, allow me to dream about it. Even just for a minute.
Allow me to believe that you belong to me and only me.
So that, no matter how far away from each other we are, I’ll be able to meet you when I close my eyes.
                                                                                ✿
She’s fast asleep.
That’s good.
If I talk to you now, it’ll make it harder for me to leave.
You were crying?
We were finally able to be honest with each other but I couldn't make you happy.
I even made you cry.
I know I've been nothing but horrible to you...
But I beg you find it in you to forgive me.
Goodbye, my little Mermaid.
I loved you from the bottom of my heart.
                                                                                ✿
I left for the battlefield after that, riding the battleship, Kaizan, my father had left behind.
The situation there was not as in our favour as we’d been led to believe.
One afternoon, a siren rang, signalling an attack by an enemy ship.
It’s an enemy ship!
Everyone prepare for attack!
Hurry!
I made my way out to the deck to survey the situation.
I saw that we were being surrounded on all sides.
The following moment --
I lost consciousness before I could feel any pain.
I died.
At least, I should have.
But, a miracle occurred.

[kuro yoshiwara melancholia] vol. 2: tenshou tatsuki - track eight
Tumblr media
8; father’s footsteps
listen along・masterpost
                                                                                 ✿
I was allowed back to work before long.
I worked even harder than I ever had before.
The continent had just been thrown into a state of uncertainty and I had a mountain of work to do.
I threw myself into it fervently.
The officials slowly began to accept me as the new head of the Tenshou house, even those who had complained about me before.
Of course they did.
I had to regain their trust, no matter what.
I didn’t care how hard I had to work to do it.
I was the one in charge of the Tenshou name.
I couldn’t be defeated by such an event.
I wanted to become someone people could respect as both an army officer and the leader of the Tenshou household.
Just like they had my father.
That didn’t change, no matter how much time passed after I inherited the family name.
It still hasn’t changed yet, even.
                                                                                 ✿
Nanami, are you there?
I haven’t been here for a while, have I?
The last time I was here was when I came to get my coat back, wasn’t it?
Have you been well?
I’ve been quite busy recently.
Not just because I started working in the navy again.
I had a lot to put in order as the new head of the Tenshou household.
What about your foster father?
Did he come here?
I see. That’s good.
I was almost worried he’d try and get in contact with you again.
Just like I’m almost worried about the other members of the game.
I was worried someone would snatch you from me while I was busy but it looks like I had no reason to do so.
You wouldn’t still be here in Kirarou otherwise, right?
I managed to get a day off today.
The weather is good; let’s go outside.
Is there anywhere you want to go?
We’ve already been to Asakusa.
What about Nihonbashi this time?
We could even go to Ginza, if you want.
Or… That’s right.
Why don’t you come to my house?
Now I think about it, I’ve never invited you before.
We have a terrace where you can look over the garden.
The cherry blossoms aren’t blooming anymore but there are other flowers, so it still looks good.
There are even wild birds too.
We can enjoy Western style High Tea.
There’s a High Collar shop not too far from here.
High Collar is…
Well, you’ll find out if you come.
                                                                                 ✿
The servants are making preparations now.
They’ll be ready soon so please wait a moment.
Well, I suppose it is from your point of view.
My father rebuilt this mansion when he first became an admiral.
He invited an architect over from England for that very purpose.
What do you think?
You wish you were mine now, don’t you?
If you were, this house would be yours.
Ah, it’s finally here.
Leave the rest to me.
You can go.
It smells good, doesn’t it?
I ordered this tea from a trader I know recently.
It’s a little bitter but it goes perfectly with this.
These are the chocolate biscuits we bought earlier.
I’ve loved them since I was a child.
By the way, do you like sweet food?
Really? Then I’m sure you’ll like these.
What about milk?
Don’t ask me.
Whether you want to add milk or not is a personal preference.
You’re not telling me you’ve never had black tea before, are you?
I can’t believe it.
I know you’re from the countryside but I’m stunned you’ve never experienced anything foreign when our world is becoming more and more Westernised.
Whatever.
First, try it like that.
If it’s too bitter, you can add milk afterwards.
Here’s yours.
It’s hot so make sure you’re caref--
Ah! Oi! I told you it was hot.
Did you burn yourself?
Come on, show me.
Does it hurt?
I’ll call for a servant to bring you something to cool it.
Are you sure?
But you shouldn’t underestimate burns.
If you don’t cool it straight away, it might start hurting more later.
That’s what my father always told me.
Yes, my father was rather erudite.
He always taught me a wide range of things, even when I was a child.
Not just for my studies but things about daily life too.
My father also taught swordsmanship.
He excelled at it, even for a member of the army.
He’d make time in his busy schedule to train with me and take me horse riding.
It was quite useful.
This sabre isn’t just a symbol of my job as an officer.
It was originally used for fighting on horseback.
During my time at the military academy, I was top in my class at cavalry training.
I was originally expected to join the land army because of that.
But I wanted to join the navy.
Otherwise it would all have been for nothing.
I wanted to work under my father no matter what.
Ah, I’m sorry.
I got carried away.
I’ll go get something cold.
Even if you’re okay, I’m going to do it.
It’s what my father taught me to do, after all.
And it’ll be boring if your wound stops us enjoying our teatime.
Wait just a moment.
                                                                                 ✿
Your cup is empty.
Do you want more tea?
Of course.
It looks like you enjoyed it.
I’ll put milk in it right away next time.
I can tell you don’t like bitter things now.
I prefer it without any extras, though.
Today really is peaceful.
It was the perfect day to sit outside like this.
And no one can bother us here, either.
I’ll invite you again sometime, if I feel like it.
Ah, but…
It’s better if you come here on your own.
Then I don’t have to go and collect you.
Why are you looking at me like that?
Did you think I’d kidnap you if you said no?
I won’t do that.
I could force you to accept me if I wanted to.
But that would be pointless.
You have to decide that you want me by yourself.
This is a competition, after all.
So I’ll wait as long as I need.
I have time.
By the way, is your burn okay?
I see.
It was a good thing I cooled it.
My father is never wrong.
I hope I can be like him one day.

[kuro yoshiwara melancholia] vol. 2: tenshou tatsuki - track seven
Tumblr media
7; the declining distance between hearts
listen along・masterpost
                                                                                  ✿
I told you, didn’t I?!
I haven’t done anything that warrants me being punished like this.
It’s all a misunderstanding.
I don’t intend to step down as head of the household.
Pay no mind what people are saying, leave them to complain.
It would be preposterous to allow someone without Tenshou blood to take over our name.
Father said the same thing.
Father is the one who wished for me to inherit his name.
I am simply following his will.
I’m hanging up.
Everyone is so annoying.
I’ll protect this house.
All I need to do is return us to our former glory.
When will I be released from house arrest?
I can’t stay cooped up here forever.
Shit!
                                                                                  ✿
Oi, Nanami!
Why are you looking at me like that?
Am I only allowed to come here at night?
That’s up to me, isn’t it?
I’m bored now that I’m confined to my house.
Entertain me.
It looks like you’re even more wary of me than before.
I can tell by that look in your eyes that you think I’m about to pin you down.
Silence, again?
If that’s what you want me to do, you should just say so.
You should try to be cuter.
More importantly, we’re leaving here.
Get ready to go.
God, you’re slow.
I’m under house arrest.
Just because they didn’t tell me I have to stay inside all day doesn’t mean they won’t extend my arrest if they see me around here.
So, entertain me somewhere more socially acceptable.
Luckily, most of the officers still believe you’re my fiancée.
I don’t care if we’re seen together.
                                                                                  ✿
Asakusa isn’t as special as I thought it was.
We should have gone to Nihonbashi instead.
But I suppose such a common place is perfect for a country bumpkin like you.
You look restless still.
What’s wrong with you?
This is your first time here?
In Asakusa?
Gracious.
You live in Tokyo, don’t you?
I can’t believe you’ve never been here before.
You’re allowed to leave the district as long as you’re with a member of the game, aren’t you?
What on earth has the others been doing until now?
Hmm. I see.
Does that mean I’m in the lead, seeing as I’ve taken you out of the district twice now?
Whatever.
It’s obvious that I’m going to win anyway.
If this is your first time in Asakusa, we should visit Sensoji.
Now that I think about it, the cherry blossoms on the temple grounds should be blooming now.
Hm?
What was that?
I thought I saw a strange man…
No, it’s nothing.
Let’s go.
                                                                                  ✿
Oh, you idiot.
This is a temple.
You don’t have to clap before you pray here.
That’s something people do at shrines, isn’t it?
You can’t even tell the difference between a temple and a shrine?
You’re unbelievable.
Is there no limit to your lack of common sense?
Oi. If you have time to sulk, then you have time to pray.
People are waiting behind us.
                                                                                  ✿
So? What did you wish for?
Not that I think the Gods will listen to the wishes of a person who doesn’t know the difference between a temple and a shrine.
Hmph. You’ve gone quiet again.
It’s of no importance to me what you wish for.
I was crazy to ask.
Oi, what are you doing?
I’ll leave you here if you don’t hurry.
Huh? Fortune slips?
It’s a temple, of course they have them.
Don’t tell me you want to pull one?
Goodness.
I’ll never understand why women love such unreliable things as fortune telling.
What will you even do with it?
It’s stupid to believe words written on a piece of paper you just happen to pick by chance.
Ah, fine. Okay!
I guess it can’t be helped.
You never talk when I need you to but never shut up when the conversation is pointless.
And now you’re being presumptuous too.
This is why I only talk to women who are raised well…
Come on.
Don’t just stand there and follow me.
You want one, don’t you?
                                                                                  ✿
Number 18.
Ah, here it is.
Your fortune is in that draw.
What did you get?
I can’t believe you got the worst possible fortune after wanting to pull so badly.
Look at me, I got the best one.
Read it and weep.
But of course mine is better than yours; you’ve been unlucky since the moment you were born.
Shut up.
So what if that’s true?!
I was just telling the truth.
You’re just angry because I got a better fortune than you.
You’re an idiot and a poor loser.
Hm? That man?
We are being followed; it wasn’t just my imagination.
This woman?
What do you want with her?
Who on earth even are you?
Her father?!
So you’re the one who sold her to Kirarou?!
I see.
I refuse.
She’s with me right now.
Why should I hand her over to the likes of you?
Oi, don’t touch my partner without my permission.
That’s rude.
Take your dirty hands off her.
Right now.
To think he’d run away after such a weak threat.
Is your father really a man? He has no guts at all.
But, thanks to that, we managed to settle the matter without me drawing my sword.
No matter who it may be with, it wouldn’t be wise of me to duel while I’m under house arrest.
I was lucky.
No wonder I pulled the best fortune strip of the lot.
Why are you laughing?
It’s thanks to your bad luck that we were in that situation to begin with.
That man sold you to Kirarou, didn’t he?
What does he want with you now?
He’s not keeping an eye on you, is he?
You don’t know?
Well, he does seem rather greedy. He must have come to beg for money now that you’re a high class prostitute.
Be careful, either way.
It’s possible he’ll come back when he gets the chance.
You really should think about becoming mine as fast as possible.
If you do, nobody will be able to lay a hand on you, not even him.
If you’d stop being so stubborn and make up your mind, this wouldn’t have happened.
Do you understand now?
If you’re just having fun irritating me, you should rethink whether or not it’s worth it.
Now, we’ve wasted enough time.
Let’s hurry up and go.
There’s a weeping cherry tree in this direction.
Come on.
Give me your hand.
I’ll hold it.
It’ll be annoying for me if we encounter any more nuisances like that, after all.
Of course you give me your hand this time.
Now then, let’s go.
                                                                                  ✿
This weeping cherry tree really is magnificent.
It makes it worth the journey here.
Look, the petals are dancing in the wind like snow.
I’m glad we could see it at a time like this.
There won’t be any petals left soon.
What’s wrong with you, all of a sudden?
Oh, a petal?
Thank you.
It’s no wonder one got stuck to me when there are this many flying around.
Look, there’s one in your hair too.
Wait a second, there’s one here too.
It’s pointless. It’ll never end at this rate.
I brush one off and another one sticks to you.
Hey, look at me.
What? Why are you so surprised?
All I did was kiss you.
I did it because your face was so close to mine.
You’re the one who got so near, not me.
You just sound like a sore loser, you know?
It’s your fault for letting your guard down.
Let’s go home now we’ve seen the cherry blossoms.
It’ll be dark soon.
Time went fast today, didn’t it?
It’s probably because you keep messing me around and I have to look after you all the time.
But…
Thanks to that, I didn’t need to think about things I don’t want to.
No, it’s nothing.
I was just talking to myself.
Why are you sneezing?
Are you cold?
I suppose you’re right.
It’s definitely not as warm now that it's evening.
I suppose it can’t be helped.
Here.
It’s fine, wear it.
It’ll be annoying if you catch a cold.
Your luck is awful today, after all.
Don’t you dare get it dirty.
Only officers and above are given such fine coats, you know.
Make sure you look after it.
And give it back to me when my house arrest is over.
Understood?
Then, let’s get going.

[kuro yoshiwara melancholia] vol. 2: tenshou tatsuki - track six
Tumblr media
6; an unexpected downfall
listen along・masterpost
                                                                                   ✿
Does that mean… you’re stripping me of my rank?
No way…
Why?!
Please tell me the reason.
The party?
That was…
You’re misunderstanding!
There was a reason for that.
I needed to save my father.
I wasn’t violent with her for no reason.
That’s wrong!
I did put my hand on the hilt of my sword, but I didn’t draw it.
That’s not true.
That woman isn’t even my fiancée or the daughter of a respectable family.
No! I’m not just making excuses!
Even if I was…
Please listen!
Admiral!
Admiral!
Why… did it have to end up like this?
I’m… over.
                                                                                      ✿
When my father collapsed, I yelled at you to cry for him.
And I did indeed lay my hand on my saber.
The majority of the large number of people around us had connections to the navy.
Many of them must have seen me do this.
Usually, I would have known such actions would breed misunderstanding.
But I wasn’t able to think straight.
I was desperate to keep my father alive somehow.
In the end, I couldn’t convince the higher-ups to overturn their decision, no matter how hard I worked.
I was demoted due to my own mistakes, only moments after becoming the new head of the family.
It was obvious the value of our name would fall with it.
In other words, I sullied my fathers name with my own hands.
I fell into despair.
And I almost made it even worse.
I tried to justify it by placing all the blame on you.
Even though I was the one completely in the wrong.
I was so foolish.
                                                                                      ✿
Oi, Nanami.
I’m here to see you.
Listen.
Tonight, I bought out this whole geisha house. It wasn’t cheap.
You won’t have any other guests today.
This much is nothing to me.
I could buy the whole place out tomorrow and the day after too.
So hurry up and say you choose me.
It’s not like you’re unhappy with me wooing you, right?
After all, you surrendered yourself to me that night, didn’t you?
You always stop talking as soon as it suits you.
Well, whatever…
Luckily, I have a lot of free time right now.
I don’t care how long you make this game.
At first, I didn't want to waste my time with such a trivial matter.
But now I think about it, there’s nothing more boring than a game that’s easy to win.
I needed to show the other members just how much better than them the Tenshou family are.
I’ll make sure you accept me of your own will.
Take your time…
And prepare yourself.
Huh, “did something happen”?
Nothing, really.
I said nothing, didn’t I?
You’re annoyingly persistent, aren’t you?
If you want to know that badly, I’ll tell you.
Yes, something did happen.
Not just something…
It’s a great tragedy to me - no, to the whole Tenshou family.
The thing I wanted to avoid the most has actually happened.
Earlier, I had a meeting with the head of the navy.
It appears I’ve been demoted from army commander.
Yes, that’s right.
And I’m also under house arrest for a while.
That means I have absolutely nothing to do.
I don’t know when I’ll be allowed back to work.
Even if I can return to the navy…
My father always spoke about me to his subordinates as the one who would inherit the family.
And look at me now.
I don’t think I’ll be able to live if they tell me my father was mistaken in choosing me.
I’d rather be under house arrest for the rest of my life.
Now, why do you think all this happened?
Apparently, the people who saw me threaten and be violent with you at the party complained.
The higher-ups were made aware and it became a problem.
Now I think about it, it makes certainly sense.
To them, I must have looked like an insane person who ignored his father collapsing on the floor so he could shout at his fiancée.
They said I looked as if I wanted to draw my sword on you.
Well, that’s how rumours work, I suppose.
Even though I managed to restrain myself…
I really was foolish.
None of the people there know the real reason for my actions.
They don’t know that I merely wanted to save my father or that you’re a prostitute with mermaid heritage.
By tomorrow, everyone will know I’ve been demoted.
The Tenshou name will be tarnished.
The honour my father toiled to build has gone to waste.
What am I supposed to do?
I can’t even face my father again.
It’s all over.
Do you understand?
It’s all your fault.
It’s your fault for not listening to my orders and crying when I asked.
Because of that, my father died, even though he didn’t need to and I suffered greatly.
At this rate, no one will trust the Tenshou family again.
Don’t talk back to me!
How do you plan to take responsibility for this?
You can’t, can you?
All you can do is deceive men.
Of course you can’t do anything to clear the Tenshou name!
So you admit that you’re completely useless?
What a pathetic woman you are.
But to you, I must look rather pathetic too.
I can tell you think Im a pathetic and wretched man.
Don’t lie!
I can tell by the look in your eyes!
Your eyes are full of pity.
I’ve had enough!
I want to forget everything.
It would be so much easier if I could forget it all.
Don’t be stupid.
Of course I can’t forget it!
Idiots like you are so carefree.
I’m jealous.
If you think I’ll get another chance, no matter what happens, you’re entirely wrong.
If there was another chance waiting for me, I’d be desperately trying to earn it.
Of course I would.
You wouldn’t need to tell me.
What do you mean “it’ll be okay”?
How self-important you are.
You admitted that you’re useless but now you’re giving me advice?
I don’t want that from you.
There’s only one thing you can do for me.
All you can do is devote yourself to me.
Usually, that wouldn’t be enough.
Just be grateful I haven’t killed you here and now.
So, hurry up and entertain me.
I said I want to forget everything, right?
Bring some alcohol or something.
I don’t care what it is as long as it tastes good.
You better entertain me well.
Slowly and thoroughly.
That’s what prostitutes are for, isn’t it?

[kuro yoshiwara melancholia] vol. 2: tenshou tatsuki - track five
Tumblr media
5; an obsession with success
listen along・masterpost
                                                                                    ✿
That’s right.
I said goodbye to you that day.
My father died and I became the head of the Tenshou family immediately.
I was much busier than I expected I’d be.
I didn’t even have time to mourn my father properly.
I continued my work as a soldier and the head of the Tenshou family without pause.
I thought I had to work as hard as I could so I didn’t tarnish my father’s legacy.
But, ever since the day he died, I became empty inside.
If my father had known that, I wouldn’t just be reprimanded, I’d be cast out of the family.
That’s how cruel I was to you.
                                                                                      ✿
Let go of me.
I’m fine.
Oi, Nanami?
You’re here, aren’t you?
I’m coming in.
What? Why do you look so confused?
It’s been a while, hasn’t it?
I haven’t seen you since that day at the hospital.
What a half-hearted answer.
Ah, do you think it’s weird that I’ve come to see you?
Of course it is.
I remember telling you that I no longer had a reason to be with you anymore.
That I’d drop out of the game.
That we’d probably never meet again.
At the time, that was my intention.
I want nothing to do with Kuroyoshiwara now that I've inherited the Tenshou household.
But…
As you know…
The letter said I can’t stop playing the game halfway through.
Of course, I’m not scared of Kuroyoshiwara's punishment.
But I need to think about my status.
I don’t want to get caught up in something annoying.
I did think about lying low and waiting for someone else to win.
But I hate losing!
The point of a game is to win it!
That’s what I’ve been taught since I was a child.
And if I win, that would put an end to the whole game.
That’s right, isn’t it?
So I decided.
I’ll make you mine and finish this game myself.
I no longer care if you’re a mermaid or not.
I barely even care about your tears anymore.
I’ll charm you and make you mine, just to win this game.
Look at this.
Do you know what this is?
This is… Wine.
It’s alcohol from the West.
And it’s not just any old wine.
It's a rare French wine that you won’t be able to buy anywhere else.
This is really the least I could do.
We have to share a cup of alcohol before spending the night together.
I heard that was one of the customs here at Kuroyoshiwara.
And so I brought this bottle of wine with me.
I do feel like wine isn’t appropriate, but…
I don’t really care about that either.
Come on, give me your cup.
I’ll pour you a drink.
What are you doing?
You’ll spill it.
Huh? My fault?
No it isn’t.
No, I’m not drunk at all.
I did drink before I came here.
But there’s no way I’d get drunk from such a small amount.
More importantly, here.
Ah, this deep aroma.
It really is an excellent bottle.
Then, a toast to our reunion and our future.
Cheers!
What’s wrong?
Hurry up and drink.
Don’t you like alcohol?
But you have to.
It’s a rite of passage to celebrate our joining together.
I have a right as a player in the game to invite you to bed with me.
Or do you have a reason to reject me?
Then drink it right now.
Come on.
Quickly.
Good girl.
That’s good.
I feel unusually good tonight.
Tell me more about you, seeing as we have some time.
Yes, that’s right.
To win this game, I need to charm you, don’t I?
And yet, now I think about it, I know nothing about you.
How have you lived until now?
What are your likes and dislikes?
Can you tell me?
The people in the geisha house told me you were born in a fishing village in the countryside.
Or is that incorrect?
You were found by someone from that village when you were young, collapsed on the beach with no memories.
But that man sold you to Kuroyoshiwara the second you were old enough.
For money.
How pitiful you are.
You’ve been met with nothing but disaster since you were born.
And now you’re trapped within these walls as if they were a cage.
But that will all be over soon.
All you need to do is become mine.
Isn’t it simple?
I’ve inherited the Tenshou name.
I can probably obtain anything I want.
I’ll give you anything you ask for.
How about an elegant kimono?
Or a dress?
What do you want?
Beautiful jewels?
It doesn’t have to be a physical object.
If there’s anywhere you want to go or anything you want to see, I’ll take you there.
Don’t hold back, tell me.
Come on, answer.
Answer!
I told you, didn’t I?
I just want to win this game.
That’s why I’m here, trying to make you mind even though I don’t care for you at all.
Don’t you get it?
Look. Now you can’t run away.
All you need to do is say that you choose me.
If you do, everything will be over.
You don’t enjoy living here and keeping men you don’t like company, do you?
Then you should just pick me!
I just want to win this game.
And you just want to be free from Kuroyoshiwara.
Is this not the perfect situation for us?
Ha! What are you scared of?
Have you already set your heart on someone else?
Then there’s no problem.
Ah, that’s right.
How about this?
To our prosperity.
How was that?
How does the wine taste when you drink it like this?
Your face has gone bright red.
You’re not already drunk, are you?
Then let’s enjoy that feeling tonight.
Enjoy it with me.
Ah, how rude of me.
I’ve spilled it.
This red wine has stained your beautiful white skin.
It looks like blood, doesn’t it?
Like blood pooling around you.
I suppose it would look exactly the same if I cut you open with this saber.
I should have made you cry in anyway I could when I first came here, even if it was against the rules.
Why did I hesitate?
I should have forced you to wail and cry.
If I had…
Then my father would never have died.
I never would have felt this empty.
You don’t understand, do you?
How it feels to lose your father, your guiding light.
You’ll never understand how I feel.
I want to just forget everything and let myself be consumed by sadness.
But I have so much to do as the head of the family.
As soon as my father died, everyone began aiming for his position.
They probably don’t care about what method they have to use.
No matter what time it is, no matter who I’m with, I can’t let my guard down.
I have to protect my family.
I can’t let the ancient and honorable name I inherited from my father be tarnished by my hands.
That can’t happen.
You know, I’m not allowed to make errors and I’m not allowed to lose.
I have to win, no matter what.
No matter what the fight is, I have to win it.
I do.
So…
Become mine, right now.
I won’t let you reject me.

[kuro yoshiwara melancholia] vol. 2: tenshou tatsuki - track four
Tumblr media
4; when no honour is left
listen along・masterpost
                                                                                     ✿
Why did it have to end like this…?
What do you want?
You’re still here?
You should have gone home.
My father…?
He…
...fell asleep just now.
A sleep he’ll never wake up from.
He had an incurable illness.
The doctor already told us he didn’t have long left.
I knew this day would come and I was ready for it.
My father too.
But…
Why did it have to be today?
My father planned to resign tonight.
That was why he was in such high spirits.
It’s my fault.
If I’d managed to obtain your tears faster, this wouldn’t have happened…
You finally realised?
That’s right.
The reason I joined the Kuroyoshiwara game.
The reason I wanted your tears.
It was all for my father.
I wanted to save my beloved father.
But he isn’t here anymore!
Why wouldn’t you cry for me?
If I’d only had your tears, I might have been able to save him.
You’re right.
I never did tell you why I needed your tears.
But would you have cried for me if I had?
I don’t think you would.
Look at you now, not even a drop rolling down your face, even though I’m this upset.
Mermaids really are rather merciless.
But that’s right.
You’re a mermaid.
You’re a monster, not a human.
I was odd for expecting you to feel things like a human would.
I was odd for relying on your powers too much.
Get out of my sight immediately.
I don’t want to see your face ever again.
I have no reason to be involved with you anymore.
I’m dropping out of the game.
We probably won’t ever meet again.
Go.
And…
Never come near me again.

[kuro yoshiwara melancholia] vol. 2: tenshou tatsuki - track one
Tumblr media
1; a letter from the black light district
listen along・masterpost
                                                                                      ✿
Thunder boomed.
Rain poured furiously.
This is the story of that spring day.
I received a letter from Kuro Yoshiwara.
It was an odd thing - an invitation to join the Kuro Yoshiwara Game.
It would be far from unusual if the name Kuro Yoshiwara was not a familiar one.
Right in the depths of the Yoshiwara district, there is a geisha house that only a few noble families are allowed to enter - Kirarou.
Kirarou and the pitch black walls surrounding it are called Kuro Yoshiwara by these families.
The people who know what happens in this shady red-light district are limited.
Even as the oldest son of the noble Tenshou family and an Imperial Navy Commander, I understand very little of the place.
More than anything, I wonder what exactly the Kuro Yoshiwara Game is.
The letter read as follows:
The winner of the Kuro Yoshiwara Game will be allowed an audience with a highly ranked courtesan.
The game has three rules.
One: Entice her.
Two: Do her no harm.
Three: Do not let her escape.
Six men will fight for her, according to these rules.
Those who have read this far cannot forfeit the game.
Those who do will be punished by the Kuro Yoshiwara.
How tedious.
What an egotistical bunch, forcing this letter upon me.
Why would I, who can have any woman he pleases, battle for some harlot?
For a foul woman who can do nothing but coquet and sell their bodies.
Do they think me foolish enough to become infatuated with such a female?
Idiots.
I don’t  know who thinks this ridiculous prank is funny.
I’m disposing of this letter right away.
Before I could throw the letter into the flames, one single word caught my eye.
Mermaid.
A woman with mermaid heritage?
I’ve heard that mermaid’s tears can grant immortality.
No matter how much money or power one had, it was something one could never gain.
Perpetual youth and longevity.
Even just the idea of it was intoxicating. People would long for it.
I could not turn my gaze away from such a power - one that would solve all my personal problems.
I see.
Even if it’s all a falsehood, I do not mind.
I’ll just give them what they deserve when the time comes, if that’s the case.
But…
If there’s even a possibility of the contents of this letter being true…
I’ll win this game and obtain the mermaid’s tears.
Mermaid’s tears which bear eternal life.
                                                                                      ✿
Are you awake?
Why are you so panicked?
I brought you lemon water.
You must be thirsty.
Here, drink.
You’ve been acting odd since I entered the room.
Are you nervous?
This isn’t the first time we’ve spent this night together.
You can think of this house as your own.
I told the servants as much.
So you don’t need to be so stiff.
It’s too early for breakfast yet.
Why don’t you sleep a little more?
Yes, good girl.
Ah, the servants told me you stood on your skirt while going down the spiral staircase again.
Are you still not used to Western clothing?
Well, I did hear you were raised in the country and therefore know nothing of society.
It would be odd for you to grow accustomed to life here so fast.
What? Are you angry at me?
Such a face is a waste of your beauty.
I’m going to take a shower before breakfast.
Would you like to join me?
You don’t need to hold back.
You seem to be wide-awake now, after all.
If you’re with me, I can teach you how to use the taps and the bathtub.
Come on, get out of bed and follow me.
Don’t try to escape.
Look, I caught you.
There was a time when I never would have held you like this.
I never even imagined a day like this would come, back then.
Say...
Do you remember the first day I visited Kirarou?
The rain that day was intense.
One might even call it a spring storm.
