Hiya Papaya! 👋
Someone online (I actually forgot who it was though and cannot find the message anymore) recommended to me Haibane Renmei with the quick summary of "It’s about a sort of afterlife where haibane need to figure out what to do to ascend.". I decided to give it a go, which was a good decision! I can really recommend you to watch it too! It's even better if you do that and then come back to this post and read the rest. However, I felt like this anime is not about "ascending" or "reincarnation". Personally, it's about moving forward with your life. (Spoiler warning obviously and I should mention that I have no clue about psychology and english isn't my first language, so I could confuse some phrasings.)
If you didn't watch it, let me clarify some small things:
There are angel-like people called the Haibane, born from cocoons, who cannot remember anything except for the dream they had just before.
The walls encase a town called Glie and some landscape with buildings (e.g. Old Home), forests and many plots of land
Nobody is allowed to touch the wall (or go even near it) or go behind the wall except the Toga and animals like birds (e.g. Crows which play a big role)
An organization called the Haibane Renmei takes care of the Haibane and their head is the communicator.
Being Sin-Bound means that a Haibane didn't have a dream and don't get their Day of Flight.
I'll also try to write this essay chronologically, so along what we learn in each episode.
So let's talk about my view on what story the anime is trying to tell. I believe Haibane Renmei talks about being able to take a step towards the future.
In episode 1 we learn that the one and only thing that the haibane remember is the dream they had before waking up in a cocoon, for example: falling, being surrounded by sparkling light, getting run over by a train or just sleeping. You can either interpret this as how they died or their plan to end their lives. In my opinion, it's the latter one because it makes more sense why they arrive in Glie and inside the walls separating the town from the outside world. We'll talk about it at a later point. So, the Cocoon represents coming out of their shell and getting help on their own. That's why it's a custom that one should break out of their own cocoon. It's like the haibane has regained their will to live and tries to improve their lives by getting help. Which is quite a tough thing to do. The part where a haibane doesn't remember anything besides the dream and getting a new name could be seen as a metaphor for restarting from zero and leaving the regrets (or anything similar) behind.
During episode 2 we also learn that there are not just angel-like Haibane in Glie, but instead they are allowed to stay by the normal people living there. The townsfolk are really nice people too, so I think these people personify a safe space where the Haibane can work and get back into a rhythm and normalcy. Additionally, in episode 4, Kana also mentions that the town is extremely protective of them, further strengthening this argument. This idea of Glie as a safe space is also represented by the communicator, who helps the Haibane and has them live in a controlled space so they can focus more on moving forward.
The next big thing that happens in this anime is Kuu having her Day of Flight (episode 6). I believe that this event is a signal that the Haibane has finally "solved"/worked out their problem and broke free of it. From my point of view, it seemed like Kuu figured out that she doesn't need to be like everybody else. The first clothing item she bought was a jacket in a larger size, the size of the other girls. She also tried to be like them by wearing Hikari's glasses or riding Reki's scooter. However, Kuu said to Rakka "You gave me some of the drops, Rakka.". Drops were filling a cup (in her mind) and it got completely full. On that same day, Kuu had her Day of Flight. In episode 3, Kuu said that she hoped that Rakka would be a little sister and seemed happy when Rakka called her senior. I think that made her realize that she doesn't need to be like everyone else; she can be herself and still be a senior. Kana also confirmed that in episode 6 by saying that "I think she no longer has to pretend to be what she isn't anymore." and "[...] but maybe she's grown up in her own way.". Meaning she's able to move forward towards the future. Having her Day of Flight. After Kuu had left, the only thing that remained was a few feathers and her halo. This can be a metaphor for stripping off that feeling that she's not like others. Like she's regained her humanity and not feel alienated.
Sadly, Rakka couldn't get over Kuu leaving and is in a really depressed state (episode 7). So much so that black spots appeared on her wings, which Reki recognized. This is where we learn about being sin-bound. (Note: I'm jumping between the crow and sin-bound themes since both of them are deeply connected) I think that being sin-bound signals someone that has given up or is about to. In episode 8, Rakka is led by crows to a well to meet someone. That someone is a skeleton of a crow. However, she recognizes the bird by saying "You've taken the form of a bird now, but it feels like I had known you from somewhere, a long time ago.". Furthermore, she adds "I can't even remember my name. [...] So I can't remember who you are. Except that you're somebody precious to me. I was always lonely. And I thought nobody would grieve, even if I was gone. So I wanted to disappear. But you were by my side. You became a bird to go over the walls and let me know that I was not alone." These sentences give us a lot of information. She wants to disappear. She even thought/dreamed "My existence should be erased from the world.", when she was unconscious in the well. Due to her feeling lonely, she thought that she didn't belong in this world. That's why it hit her so hard when Kuu left.
The crows play a huge role in the anime too. In episode 4, Kana said these things about the crows "They're said to carry lost items.", "Things we left behind and forgot when we went into the cocoons." and Kuu also talked with Rakka about them in episode 3 "But I think they want to be friends with us.". It seems to me that the crows represent someone or something that is connected to past regrets/problems. But instead of being hurtful, they're trying to help so that the Haibane can be free again. Free from being sin-bound. That is why the crows led Rakka to the well. This thesis is further proven by the fact that Rakka wants to return to her dream and apologize to the crow (episode 9), which is directly followed by the communicator saying "One who recognizes their own sin, has no sin." Side note: They also talk about sin-bound itself, that "Perhaps that is what it means to be bound by sin. To keep going around in the same circle looking to find where the sin lies and at some point losing the sight of the way out." When Rakka got back to Old Home, Reki noticed that the black spots were completely gone. Meaning that Rakka is no longer sin-bound and has let go of her past regrets, she actually confirms this at the end of the episode too.
Speaking of Reki, she's another sin-bound. That's the reason why she knew so much and was able to help Rakka this often. Since Rakka has recovered, she and the communicator got to have a talk in episode 11 about Reki. There she learns that "She is still lost in the dark. Rakka, you had the bird come to you enabling you to fill in the missing pieces of your memories. However, Reki has no one. She must face the darkness in her mind, on her own." From what we learn throughout the last 3 episodes, I'm positive that Reki's regret is similar, if not the same as Rakka's regret. Reki is alone but, in contrast to Rakka, she felt betrayed by everyone "Every time I trusted someone, I always ended up being betrayed." (episode 13) because everyone leaves her side. When Kuu had her Day of Flight, she said to herself "In the end, everybody leaves me.", just like when Kuramori (a Haibane who took care of her) was gone or she and Hyouko (a Haibane from the Abandoned Factory nest) weren't allowed to go to each other's district. She was afraid to hurt somebody she trusts and get hurt by them. As a result, she stopped trusting everybody and became a "stone" by closing her heart (episode 13). Even Rakka noticed that in episode 11 "Because she doesn't want to worry anyone and because she doesn't want to lean on anyone, she just smiles.". In the last episode (13), Reki also remembers her dream; in that dream, Reki is run over by a train: "It's an iron rail that carries something. This is where... I abandoned myself.". So not only has she "[...] lost the people that she could share her sorrow with.", but also herself. Additionally, her time is limited as she was ready to vanish, leaving nothing. "Soon, I will be forgotten by everybody and vanish. Where did I go wrong?" And if she was not rescued and forgiven by Rakka, she would've gotten hit by that train. She would've died if she hadn't found the last remaining energy to call for help. To put it bluntly, this is a direct comparison to suicide. Reki had given up on her life and wanted to end it because "[...] no matter how much I wished for it no salvation has ever come to me!". She was afraid that no one would come to her aid if she asked for help. But at the same time, Reki didn't want to die. She wanted to be just like Kuramori, helping the newly hatched Haibane and that's why she called for Rakka and was "forgiven". Rakka found the answer to the question of the circle of sin (episode 12): "The one who recognizes one's own sin has no sin. You cannot help going in circles if you are alone, but if you have someone by your side..." and together they broke free and both of them were no longer sin-bound. The same night Reki had her Day of Flight.
So what happens after the Day of Flight? For that, we got to talk about the walls that encase Glie. We go a few episodes back, specifically episode 9, when Rakka touched the wall because she heard laughter coming from it. Rakka even recognized it as Kuu's voice. Then she has another conversation with the communicator and we learn that "Only those whom the walls recognized as ready to live outside may go beyond the walls." which implies that the Day of Flight is someone ready to live a normal life again. However, Rakka falls ill shortly after (but this time it's not because of being sin-bound). In episode 10 we learn from the communicator that "Even a good Haibane must be punished if she touches the wall.". I think that the walls are a metaphor for a limit and you should not overstep or push too hard to get back on track. I firmly believe that the walls also act as a reminder to take your time to heal, let go of regrets, ask for forgiveness and when you're ready, aka the day of flight, you can go outside and go towards the future.
While working inside the walls (to collect light leaves), Rakka has to wear a robe as protection. I imagine this acts as guidance to avoid overstepping the limit too. Inside the walls there are tags on walls with names written on them. In episode 12 we get to understand that these are the names of the Haibane. Furthermore, the communicator explains "It is proof that the Haibane attained a true identity. When the time comes the name on the tag hanging from the wall is changed to the true name." I'm positive that its meaning is that the Haibane is not someone new, but rather the Haibane did (re)find their real selves. The real self who was lost and can move towards the future.
Of course there are some things that I cannot interpret or some that don't really fit, for example, the Toga (people who come from outside the walls to do trade and only the communicator is allowed to talk to them) or sentences like "As you cannot remember the world you used to be in... nobody in this world remembers you.". However, it's stated that "[...] The creators have deliberately maintained this ambiguity and refused to elaborate on these points in interviews, with Yoshitoshi Abe stating he doesn't want to impose his personal views on the viewers."(Source: Wikipedia) and I'm misusing that as an excuse to not be able to explain everything, hehe.
To put it in a nutshell, given the arguments above, the safe space being Glie, being sin-bound represents giving up and from what we learn of the walls. I'm firmly convinced that anime's key motif is going forward and not reincarnation. Anyway, I'm grateful to you for reading my thoughts and opinions! And I hope that you'll share yours with me. :D
On a side note: The communicator leaves Reki alone after their conversation in episode 10 with the following sentences: "You have always been there for Rakka. You have been doing the right thing. And now, you must not be envious of Rakka for moving forward.".

EPISODE 10: OCEAN
Mmm, delicious cameo crumbs
We're off to the Second Demon World, but not before we see Majin Kuu in action against Tamagami Number One! The Tamagami's a sword-wielder and... Kuu doesn't really have anything special to offer besides being absolutely going animal. He's got a few basic energy attacks, a few from the mouth, but I'd be curious to see how they stretch this guy into a Sparking Zero moveset.
With the Gendarmerie plane, they could very reasonably skip straight to the final boss, but they're on a Dragon Ball hunt and Gomah has a long term plan for plan for Dende, so the rescue mission is priority 2.
World 2 has much lighter air and is a big wide ocean like the episode title suggests, chock full of krakens! I like how it has the little Majin Buu hair swirl. It also has a bunch of floating mini planets in the atmosphere- so after we lose the plane again to the rest of the Gendarmerie (who Goku mows down with ease now that he's faster) and a giant kraken, it's off to Even Older Namek to recuperate... and no one's home.
Meanwhile with the B Team (don't have to call them that for much longer), Hybis wants to swipe Bulma from Vegeta and there's some brief debate of whether Bulma wants to be part of the back to normal wish. Bulma's gushing over her clear skin, but Vegeta's insistent on them growing back up together also, he's implied to a boobs man
"We're already married!" "I don't mind." Hybis polyamorous confirmed?
Also, the subs had Vegeta call Goku "stupid Kakarot", but... I definitely heard a kusottare. ...Yeah, he didn't call him "stupid".
Everyone seems to forget that Piccolo was born on Earth- c'mon, Goku and Bulma should know this. He does seem to have some vague nostalgia, so maybe there's a bit of King Piccolo and Kami poking in.
Goku briefly recalling how he blew up Old-But-Newer-Than-This-One Namek, Frieza got a few more cameo frames!
Meanwhile, Majin Kuu failed his task and tries to get Arinsu to reconsider firing him- he's still good for shopping! Are we going to keep cooking Majins until one works. What other wacky designs do we have in store?
Now that everyone's all together, it's time for the lore dump!
Turns out the main universe was not made by Zeno or even the Great Priest but the Super Majin (not making this title up) Rymus. And the multiverse is still a thing! The Glinds were sent to the individual numbered universes- we got all the Supreme Kais! No confirmation of any Gods of Destruction, but...
Someone wake the Gowasu blog! There he is!
AND OUR BOY FUWA!! I will take whatever Universe 6 content I can get, even if it's just the Kai, I love my cameo light snack.
Turns out the Glinds are a dying breed now that the trees have died out.
Even so, it's time to hit the road again towards the next Dragon Ball... Only for Neva the geriatric Namekian to come creeping up...
Next episode: We check back in with Arinsu and the next Tamagami fight commences- this time, Vegeta gets to take a swing!
EPISODES WITHOUT KNOWING HANVI'S WHEREABOUTS: 10
EPISODES WITHOUT KNOWING UNIVERSE 6'S STATUS: 9 (CONFIRMED! IT EXISTS!)

So the Daima DLC for Sparking Zero has been revealed. Eight characters, which are: Mini Goku (Super Saiyan), Mini Vegeta ()base, Super Saiyan, Super Saiyan 2, Super Saiyan 3), Glorio, Panzy, and Majin Kuu
Oh cool, Panzy made it in! I'm happy for her.
There's definitely going to be a second Daima pack. They have Kuu but not Duu, they're missing Gomah entirely, and they have Ultra Vegeta 1 but not Super Saiyan 4 Goku.

I've had time to think about it and my final thoughts on Dragon Ball Daima are pretty mixed. The show has way more setup then payoff, and it makes the show feel a little empty. I love its more light hatred tone but the pacing is a roller coaster.
I stopped watching week to week because of how slow everything was going. This show was 20 episodes but if you cut the fat it could be 15, maybe less. Glorios backstory was sumed up in a sentence, Piccolo didn't do anything, As cool as Super Saiyan 4 looks It had zero build up.
That final battle with Goma looked good but he really was just a punching bag who could take a beating. Like I didn't feel the impact of SS4 getting solid hits in when SS3 was doing mostly the same thing.
The best characters of this show are Kuu and Duu, maybe Kuu a bit more. He's so up beat and just wants to help all the time witch he dose very competently.
I might still rewatch this for the dub only because Stephanie Nadolny is back as Kid Goku but because I know how this all plays out I might just have it on in the background. REALLY wish the dub and sub came out at the same time, Daima had lots of exposition and there was a bunch to read.
Anyway my favorite episodes were 6 with the first tamagami fight and 13 with the giant kid and his dog.
Oh yeah
And that part where Piccolo said he forgot how forgot/doesn't know how to speak Namekian killed me! YOU HAVE KAMI AND NAIL IN YOUR BRAIN NO WAY YOU JUST FORGOT BETWEEN THE THREE OF YOU!

Yelling about Daima under the cut, spoilers and somewhat negative opinions abound
I'm honestly getting a little disillusioned with Daima. It had a really promising start and I enjoyed the exploration of the world and I enjoyed the smaller cast, but I feel like it is doing entirely too much with entirely too few episodes.
This thing is 20 episodes, but it feels like there's just way too many moving parts that aren't really moving, too many factions, too many characters, too many plot threads and lore dumps and not enough time to get into them all without resorting to telling and not showing
And it sucks because I like all of these characters, and I like the concepts that they bring to the table but I feel like nothing really has any room to breathe without it feeling like it's taking away from something else, and then I get frustrated, even though I like everything that's being presented in a vacuum.
Like I can't get a good lore dump without taking away from plot progression and I can't get more plot progression without taking away character moments and I can't get good character moments without taking away from time to understand the lore. And moments with one group of characters is taking away moments for another group of characters and damn it I miss thinking Shin was going to be plot-relevant in a series where among the main villains are his own siblings. Piccolo also isn't getting very much despite his own connections to things in the Demon Realm, and that feels like a massive disservice too. I wish we could have shrunk the cast down like considerably.
Now we are in episodes 15-20 and I don't really feel like we really answered any of our burning plot questions in the slightest, nor do I really get much of a sense of accomplishment for making it this far, and the lore answers we do get only lead to more questions that we just don't have time to answer, and it's just starting to get a little frustrating.
Like the whole thing is trying to be this big power play chess game but like, the pieces involved have barely interacted with each other in the slightest and everyone is just waiting for Goku and friends to get there before anything can actually happen.
Like there hasn't really been much good build up or stakes, just fodder that is easily defeated, Tamagami fights (which are totally fine and I actually have zero problem with), Kuu and Duu, who, even though I love them dearly, haven't really gotten to do anything yet in relation to our heroes, and then there's Gomah and Degesu (who I also love, but we barely see) just kind of standing around and complaining and waiting for it to happen. Shutting down Warp-sama feels like the first real action they took towards anything since the initial kidnapping Dende and turning everyone into kids. The rest of the time has been sitting watching Buu saga on repeat or watching the gang get closer and cry "I can't believe they're getting closer!"
I get why Arinsu is waiting around, she's been getting her own pieces into play this whole time, she's being proactive, and I know all of this shit is going to come together soon now that everyone is in the first Demon World, but I wish there had been a little more intersection and interplay between these factions leading up to this point.
Like we could have had more diversions and obstacles than just various forms of plane trouble, things that would be more connected to this wider narrative and maybe reveal some things along the way.
It sucks because like this series is fucking beautiful, it's beautifully animated, beautifully rendered, it's an interesting world with fun and interesting characters and an interesting sandbox to play in but like, its episode count is doing it a massive disservice. I want to know more, I want to see all these characters get a chance to really have some spotlight, but there just isn't enough fucking time to address everything in a satisfactory mannerunless they go it just an absolute lightning fast pace because they didn't use their time wisely.
I can forgive the first few episodes pacing being slow because they're taking time to reintroduce the characters and establishing the plot and world building, but there are a lot of episodes where like very little actually happens to move things forward, and every time something does move forward, it ends up getting stopped by an obstacle that's usually pretty easily resolved by the beginning of the next episode and it's like why are we wasting time with this. We could cut out the entirety of episode 13 and miss almost nothing, there are a lot of other scenes that we could probably cut for time because they drag on a little too long or don't really add anything. I'm trying to enjoy the journey but I can't really do that knowing we have such a limited amount of time and the series is slowly going along like it's much longer than it actually is.
I wish we either had more episodes or we could just trim the fat a little bit because 20 episodes is not enough to follow up on all of the things that they've established without leaving some major plot canyons unless Toriyama manages to just pull some insane fucking matrix maneuvering of the plot out of his ass, and I think he's capable of that, so I'm trying to wait and let him cook and reserve my full judgments for when the series is actually over.
My feelings may change when the series wraps up and I go and rewatch it in its entirety in one go, because we aren't done yet and I want to be fair, and I want to like this series, and there's a lot of things I do absolutely adore, but right now, these pacing problems are killing me. I don't hate Daima, just the execution of it, especially as we head our way towards the finale, but I'm still holding out hope it'll turn around somehow.

team F starts off as an absolute distaster. they barely know how to play minecraft at a hardcore level. they have no idea what mods are installed. they started in one of the hardest biomes. no passive mobs spawn. they started next to a witch coven. they sucked so bad that three of their deaths got retconned and they STILL manage to be half the team down. one of them physically cannot connect to the server. one of them died trying to do a story bit because they drowned him by accident (also retconned). having no idea what's part of a mod and what's part of the server they just run from any threat. they abandonned their entire base. two people died doing this
robby's entire existence in centred around bringing kuu and alfred back. he spends an entire 8 hour stream in the nether trying to find a fortress for skulls and fails. he has a breakdown in the nether hearing other people because he genuinely doesn't know what a goat horn is and thinks its something out to kill him. suddenly another team arrives at his home after being convinced no one else is alive. they reveal that the entire rest of the server is in contact and actively working together. robby witnesses a million and one new mod items and is convinced they're trying to trick him. they strike a deal to help robby get skulls. the new goal is just to find a nether fortress. that's all he wants
midway through this deal they meet the rest of the server. they stop their quest and drag robby thousands of blocks away from home to the point he is completely lost. robby witnesses another million and one new mod items. the reach the caldera. robby has not stopped screaming for people to slow down. at least 50 lore drops are happening at once compounded ontop of 50 more lore drops that came before it. they try to bring robby into it. gandalf is there. robby either so genuinely flabbergasted he could not think of what to say or had no idea what they were talking about. robby committing to a character of being untrusting of everyone. robby's chat in shambles including alfred who was chatting and just as confused. robby just leaves. he still has to find fucking wither skulls. he wasted an entire stream and made exactly zero progress to getting his friends back. he is completely fucking lost
ive still got vods to watch but i hope team F just continues to be this isolated enclave fighting for their lives in a perpetual death loop and entirely ignoring the apocalypse because they've spent the last 20 days trying to milk cows. fuck the hero's call
alright im catching up with balloon smp via team F and i think robby encountering gibson and sophie might be, genuinely, the funniest build up and reaction to a scripted minecraft event i have ever seen

So what characters from Daima do you think Sparking Zero will add? The Super Hero DLC added 11: 4 Gohans (Base, SSJ2, Ultimate, Beast), 4 Piccolos (Base, Potential Unlocked, Orange, Giant Orange), The two Gammas, and Cell MAX.
Well, we know that Goku (Mini), Vegeta (Mini), and Glorio are confirmed. One's even in the game already as a preorder bonus.
I'd be shocked if they didn't have Super Saiyan 3 Vegeta and Super Saiyan 4 Goku for their Minis. Adult versions aren't as necessary but will probably be there. Though Goku already has an adult Super Saiyan 4 character in the game so they might skip that one. SSJ3 Vegeta in both versions, certainly.
Gomah's super form, definitely. He's the big bad evil guy.
Definitely Majin Duu. Preferably Majin Kuu as well but he's not as necessary for a fighting game.
I could see one of the Tamagamis being in there. Probably not all three. If we do only get one, it will likely be Tamagami #1 since that one fought Gomah. Though they could also put Neva in and have him summon Tamagamis as attacks the way Babidi does with his minions.
Panzy probably won't make the cut. She had a lot of promise with her gadgeteer freedom fighter thing but that basically stopped being a thing as soon as her introduction was over.
Degesu, Dr. Arinsu, Piccolo (Mini), and Kaioshin (Mini) are probably out. Though either Piccolo or Kaioshin might have a shot of getting in. Probably not both though.
So... yeah. That's my prediction.
-> Goku (Mini) -> Goku (Mini, SSJ) -> Goku (Mini, SSJ3) -> Goku (Mini, SSJ4) -> Vegeta (Mini) -> Vegeta (Mini, SSJ) -> Vegeta (Mini, SSJ3) -> Vegeta (SSJ3) -> Glorio -> Majin Duu -> Gomah -> Either Tamagami #1 or Neva
With the Maybe pile being
-> Goku (Mini, SSJ2) -> Goku (SSJ4) -> Vegeta (Mini, SSJ2) -> Majin Kuu -> Piccolo (Mini) -> Kaioshin (Mini)
