Nebbiolo’s ascendancy to the throne had unwittingly condemned its parent freisa to wilderness. Luckily, the once prominent Piemonte native is now making a minor comeback, thanks to conscientious winemakers like Vajra and others. While the name might suggest strawberry (fraise in French), Kyè® packs a punch and tastes anything but. Brambly dark fruits, tobacco, leather and spices are explosive with a wild streak. Outspoken and full-bodied with no shortage of acidity, it’s easy to see where nebbiolo gets its tannins from. Needs time. Lacks glamour of its progeny but a genuinely hearty presence. Soothing label.

The 2013 Langhe Freisa Kyè® is remarkably polished and, dare I say, elegant, in this vintage. The bombastic style of some years past has been supplanted by a much more silky, perfumed expression of Freisa. Bright, nuanced and finely sculpted, the Kyè® offers extraordinary finesse.
