Standout rookies bump heads as Heat face Warriors
One of the league’s best road teams will encounter a hot home squad when the Miami Heat open a five-game trip with a matchup against the Golden State Warriors on Thursday night in San Francisco.
The Heat have won three in a row overall and three straight on the road to improve their record away from Miami to 9-6. At the start of play Wednesday, only the Minnesota Timberwolves, Denver Nuggets and Dallas Mavericks had more road wins, each with 10.
Miami, however, ruled out forwards Jimmy Butler (calf) and Caleb Martin (ankle) as well as guard Kyle Lowry (soreness) for Thursday’s game. Guard Josh Richardson (back) remains doubtful for the contest.
Miami is coming off a 119-113 home win over the Philadelphia 76ers on Christmas. Impressive rookie Jaime Jaquez Jr. contributed career highs in points (31) and rebounds (10) to the victory.
Making just his seventh start, Jaquez became the first rookie in 38 years to post a 30-point/10-rebound double-double in a Christmas Day game. Only four rookies — Wilt Chamberlain, Oscar Robertson, Walt Bellamy and Patrick Ewing — previously had accomplished the feat.
“Great to get a win, career night, Christmas,” Jaquez said after the performance. “I grew up watching these games, and to be able to play and have a career night, I just go back to all the hard work, late nights in the gym, preparing for moments like this.”
Most of those moments took place in Southern California, where Jaquez was born (Irvine), went to high school (Camarillo) and played 134 games for UCLA the past four seasons.
The 22-year-old will be returning to California for the first time in his NBA career at the start of the Heat’s trip. He will head to his old stomping grounds for matchups against the Los Angeles Clippers on New Year’s Day and the Lakers next Wednesday.
Jaquez has started the past three games in place of Butler, who has been bothered by a strained right calf. Butler made the trip to California but won’t play in the Golden State game.
The Warriors lost their Christmas Day showcase 120-114 to the Denver Nuggets on the road. The Miami meeting begins a run of seven in a row at home for a team that’s won its past eight games inside its own building.
Jaquez wasn’t the only rookie with a historic performance on Christmas. Golden State’s Brandin Podziemski had 13 points, nine rebounds, six assists and five steals in the defeat.
No rookie had posted that combination of stats in any game since Ben Simmons did it in 2017. The last Warriors rookie to do it was Purvis Short in 1978.
Also, his season-best steals total made him one of just three Warriors rookies in the past 20 years to swipe five in a game, joining Stephen Curry (twice) in 2010 and Eric Paschall in 2020.
Podziemski has teamed with fellow rookie Trayce Jackson-Davis to ignite a Warriors turnaround in recent games with Draymond Green on suspension. Golden State had a five-game winning streak snapped in Denver.
Curry noted neither he nor his teammates are surprised by the improved play of late, which has followed much national scrutiny over the team’s slow start.
“It’s been like that for years now, even before we won the ’22 championship,” Curry said of media negativity. “They always find something to nitpick, and that’s because there’s expectations for us to win. So you kind of take that in stride.
“For me, my approach is to dumb it down to just … win a game at a time, give ourselves some momentum, some confidence, some energy.”

Cedric the Entertainer holds annual celebrity golf classic
Tumblr media
The actor/comedian makes it nine in a row for the golf event that raises funds for charity WESTLAKE, Calif. (News4usonline) - The 9th Annual Cedric The Entertainer Celebrity Golf Classic took place on Aug. 14 and Aug. 15. The golf classic was celebrated in two different fashions. On Sunday night, the Lexus VIP Pairing Party Celebration kicked off and so the fun began. Celebrities and athletes alike showed up for a night of entertainment prior to the tournament the following morning. The Golf Classic is a token of gratitude to help raise funds for the Kyles Family Foundation and help the urban youth. Those that attended helped support Cedric the Entertainer and his endeavors that benefit the Kyles Family Foundation.

Photo by Melinda Meijer/News4usonline This is Cedric’s way of giving back and it trickles down to the following charities: Boys & Girls Club of Camarillo, Kyles Family Foundation, SSM Health Foundation, Rosetta Boyce Kyles Women’s Pavilion, and Amazing Grace Conservatory. The Kyles Family Foundation started over ten years ago and aims to help urban youth throughout the country and teach valuable life skills with a focus on healthy eating, physical education, and academics. It was started by Cedric and his wife, Lorna Kyles to help youth navigate life with a purpose. The foundation has been awarded a grant in 2019 from the Harold and Carole Pump Foundation, a well-known foundation that helps raise awareness for cancer research and raise funds to help fight cancer. Lexus VIP Pairing Party Celebration & Cedric The Entertainer Golf Classic Plenty of celebrities and athletes alike showed their support this past weekend for this memorable event. Many big names graced the “red carpet” like Maiya Taneka, Derek Fisher, David Justice, Marcus Allen, and Sugar Ray Leonard, who were among the attendees in this year’s event.   I felt positive energy as I arrived to cover this event. All of the participants had very similar messages and the running theme throughout the event was their desire to support their friend Cedric and to give back to the community by helping fundraise for this cause.  Every celebrity and athlete seemed glad to be part of this effort and they looked forward to having some fun playing golf in the process. Cedric the Entertainer was no slouch when it came to showing up in style. In his fashion, he sported a cherry blossom blazer and stylish hat to accompany his look. Unfortunately, Cedric had his hands full running the event and was not able to talk to all the media, but was very humble and did mention he would try to return.

Former Major League Baseball star David Justice and his partner attended the kickoff event for the 9th Annual Cedric The Entertainer Celebrity Golf Classic on Aug. 14, 2022. Photo by Melinda Meijer/News4usonline As for the celebrities and guests that came to show support to their dear friend, a few stood out in particular. Leonard is a boxing legend. Justice was an MLB superstar during his heyday. Someone who was not on the promotional guest list was UFC light-heavyweight champ Chuck “The Iceman” Liddell, all of which had very kind words to say. “I’m just here to have fun and to give back. To be a part of things that will help our kids, and families and my heart go out to everybody. I want to give back to all of them,” said Leonard at the Lexus VIP Pairing Party Celebration. Leonard jokingly mentioned he would hit the ball on the golf course too far and too hard. The boxing legend was there to have a good time and support the community, his golf swing was the least of his concerns. Justice believes that kids are in a league of their own. “I feel like I represent a lot of the young kids that we are raising money for," Justice said. "I was fortunate to grow up in a Boys Club and spent a lot of time in one in my neighborhood. I started all my youth sports at the Boys Club. Some of my best mentors in my life were from the Boys Club. It had a major impact in my life and I know it has had a major impact in many lives, we just want to continue that.”

Former Los Angeles Lakers star Derek Fisher attended the 9th Annual Cedric The Entertainer Celebrity Golf Classic on Aug. 14, 2022. Photo by Melinda Meijer/News4usonline To my surprise, martial arts legend Chuck Liddel came out to the Cedric The Entertainer Celebrity Golf Classic event. He was not on the promotional list and it was nice to see him come out and show his support. “It's always important to help give kids chances and give kids a place to work at things in life,” said Liddell in response to the importance of fundraising. The 9th Annual Cedric The Entertainer Celebrity Golf Classic is more than an event to help raise funds for the urban youth but to hopefully give kids the chance to one day live their dreams. Pangasinense 'esports' athlete to compete in 30th SEA Games
#PHnews: Pangasinense 'esports' athlete to compete in 30th SEA Games
DAGUPAN CITY -- A 24-year-old Pangasinense is set to represent the Philippines in the esports category, a form of competition using video games, in the 30th Southeast Asian Games (SEA Games) on November 30.
Kyle Jepherson ‘Vindicated’ Padlan, a member of the Sibol, the Philippine Esports Team, is one of the seven players who made the final roster to compete in Arena of Valor (AoV).
The Sibol Team is the country’s newest brand of athletes to be fielded by the Philippines in the biennial event.
Padlan is set to take the role of Dark Slayer (DS) Lane, also called the solo/side lane.
Born and raised in Calasiao town, he now works as a network engineer in Metro Manila and who has found himself immersed in esports for the past two years.
In an interview Monday, Padlan said he has participated in a lot of tournaments since his days in Bren Esports, a Philippine-based Southeast Asian professional esports team, most notably for garnering fourth place in the Valor Cup Road to AoV World Cup.
Padlan has been passionate about video games since childhood that drove him to play AoV, and eventually turn it into his sporting career.
“For me it’s just my passion since I was a kid, I just like playing games on every platform I get my hands on,” he recalled.
Being drawn into AoV, his current squad Oro-Digitos breezed through the qualifiers for Sibol AoV, making him eligible to take a shot at the SEA Games.
This year’s SEA Games will be the first time esports will be integrated as a medal sport.
Post SEA Games, win or lose, Padlan has decided to continue engaging in esports both for fun and as a career, while doing his job as a network engineer in Metro Manila.
For their preparations for the upcoming event, the seven-man roster trains for eight grueling hours a day, analyzing hero picks and counterpicks, lane tactics, team strategies, and lane rotation.
“Akala kasi ng iba porke video games, casual na talaga. Hindi. Strategy ito. Ginagamitan ng utak (Other might think this is just video games, its casual but it’s not. This requires strategy. We need to use minds here,” Padlan said.
Padlan shares responsibility with his team in redefining video games and esports in the country, as esports is still being frowned upon by other Filipinos, especially older ones.
“There will always be a negative stigma in esports but in the end, time can only tell how esports will grow here in the country. It will depend on how esports will be marketed,” he added.
Meanwhile, Padlan urged parents to support their children in whatever path they choose, including esports.
Padlan also initially suffered prejudice from his parents due to his indulgence in video games.
“At first they have doubts. But when I started getting recognition, traveling to other places to represent the country in tournaments, they became proud. Eventually, they began supporting me and giving me 100-percent (support),” he disclosed.
However, Padlan reminded the youth to focus and finish their studies.
“Set your priorities straight, if you can make a job out of your passion then go for it, just make sure you won’t regret choosing the path you wanted,” he added.
Padlan graduated from Creative Montessori Center and Francisco Q. Duque Medical Foundation Special Science High School and Saint Louis University in Baguio City in college.
Aside from Padlan, the Sibol Arena of Valor squad consists of Jeremiah ‘1717’ Camarillo, Jevan Lorenzo ‘Bents’ delos Santos, Kevin Kio ‘Gambit’ Dizon, Miguel Klarenz ‘Miggie’ Banaag, Lawrence Anthony ‘Rubixx’ Gatmaitan and Bradie Ryan ‘Yats’ Velasquez. They are coached by Rafael ‘Cyriux’ Albert.
Prior to the SEA Games, members of the Sibol AoV Squad are set for Thailand this October to represent the country in the AoV International Championship (AIC).
AoV is a multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA) game played through the smartphone.
Published by Tencent games and launched in the Philippines in 2017, AoV has grossed over USD140 million outside China. (PNA)

“Imagine you’re watching a Star Wars movie without the sound, or without [John] Williams’ soundtrack,” Evans says. “It’s not complete. It’s the same movie but it actually brings out the movie. It’s exactly the same with the paint applications. The quality of sculpts is exactly the same. It’s always been there. We’ve gone to digital sculpting since The Force Awakens, and we’ve used the same process and the same group of artists that did those in 2015. So the sculpt is still there, but it’s amazing how much the sculpt comes out when you apply the Photo Real effects.” - @mrstevie18 / starwars.com Photos by Amanda Jean Camarillo and Kyle Kao #rex #captainrex #hasbro #starwars #starwarstheblackseries #starwarstoys #starwarsblackseries #starwars6inch #blackseries6inch #toytribe
