Mary Jane shoes have an iconic status in footwear, seamlessly transitioning from vintage charm to modern chic. Their timeless appeal, versatility, and comfort have made them a beloved choice across generations. This blog delves into the fascinating history of Mary Jane shoes, tracing their origins and evolution, and highlights their continued relevance in contemporary fashion.
Tumblr media
Origins of Mary Jane Shoes
"Mary Jane" originated from the early 20th-century comic strip "Buster Brown," created by Richard Felton Outcault. Mary Jane was a character in the strip and wore a specific type of shoe that became widely popular. These shoes typically featured a rounded toe, low heel, and a single strap across the instep, securing the foot while providing comfort. The popularity of Mary Jane shoes skyrocketed during the early 1900s. Initially designed as children's footwear, adults quickly adopted them for their practicality and stylish appeal. Brands like Thom McAn shoes played a significant role in popularizing spring step sandals during this era. Thom McAn shoes were known for their durability and comfort, making them a household name in American footwear.
The Mid-20th Century: Mary Jane Shoes Gain a Fashionable Edge
As the decades progressed, Mary Jane shoes evolved in design and appeal. The 1950s and 1960s saw a resurgence in popularity, especially among young women and girls. This period introduced various modifications to the classic design, including higher heels and different materials, catering to a more fashion-forward audience. The comfortable shoes for women continued to be a leading brand in the mid-20th century, known for blending comfort with style. Their Mary Jane shoes were a hit among consumers looking for practical yet fashionable footwear. The brand's commitment to quality and affordability ensured that Mary Jane's shoes remained accessible to a broad audience. The 1970s and 1980s were decades of bold fashion choices, and Mary Jane shoes were no exception. These years saw the introduction of platform soles, vibrant colors, and eclectic designs. Brands like Corkys shoes emerged, offering unique and stylish Mary Jane shoes that catered to the era's eclectic fashion trends.
Innovative Designs: Embracing New Trends
Brands like L'Artiste shoes and Alegria shoes continue to innovate, introducing new designs that align with current fashion trends. From bold patterns to minimalist aesthetics, Mary Jane shoes are available in various styles that cater to diverse tastes. With the growing popularity of Mary Jane shoes, finding the perfect pair has always been challenging. Many shoe stores offer a wide range of options, ensuring you can find a pair that suits your style and comfort needs. Visiting a local shoe store near you can be a great way to find Mary Jane shoes that fit perfectly. These stores often carry a curated selection of brands like Spring Step, Corkys shoes, and L'Artiste shoes, allowing you to try different styles and find the ideal pair. HALLOWEEN HALLOWEEN HALLOWEEN
One of the benefits of a day job in a costume shop is the costume parties. I made my Scarlet Witch costume last year, planning to wear it to work--and then caught Covid on October 29th. At long last, today I have worn it and it was Good.
Construction details below:
I'm not a huge fan of Marvel movies. I've liked the ones I've watched, but I don't seek them out or keep track of them. But Elizabeth Olsen is very pretty and her Witch costume is kickass and we vaguely resemble each other so I said hey, let's go for it, any excuse to wear a leather bodice.
I based my costume off her Doctor Strange outfit, not her Wandavision outfit. This one:
Tumblr media
It took a while to find a decent image, and I never could find one of the back. (I'm sure there are photos out there now, but this was a year and a half ago.) I ended up watching the same ten seconds of a clip from the movie over and over again on Youtube, because it provided the only glimpse of her back I could find. Youtube's algorithm definitely thinks I'm some kind of pervert.
I quickly realized that her outfit is at least partially 3D printed, which, fuck that. But I like leather and I have leather for...reasons, so I decided to make the bodice and headdress out of leather instead.
THE UNDERSHIRT
I bought the undershirt and the leggings off Amazon. At first I planned to cover the sleeves of the undershirt with some black spandex lace I had lying around, to better approximate the textured look in the above photo. Then I remembered I have two jobs. I wore the shirt as-is.
THE BODICE
First, I draped it.
Tumblr media
I made a pattern based off the draping. It was a pain, since I was pinning on myself. I tried to match up the strips of contrasting material in her bodice, but those didn't always perfectly align with the seams I wanted on myself.
It's worth noting that I didn't own a leather foot for my home sewing machine when I started this project. "I'll just hand-sew it," I said. "It will be soothing," I said. "I can do it while I watch TV," I said.
It was not soothing. A coworker (the Jenny mentioned in the acknowledgments of Immortality Thief!) lended me her leather foot, which made things easier, but by that point I was committed to the aesthetic and had to hand-sew a lot anyway.
I was making it out of leather scraps so not all my leather was the same color:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This was actually kind of fun because then I got to PAINT IT. I have never painted fabric before!
So after painting and leaving to dry, I had this:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Much more uniform in color!
THE HEADDRESS
I was making the headdress out of leather, which meant I needed to wire it. This was also something that sounded like it would be fun when I came up with the idea, and was laughably not fun when I actually had to do it.
First I made a paper pattern, then I cut the leather. After that, I started to wire it. Finally--like the bodice!--I painted it:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I attached it to my head with a ribbon. The ribbon was not even remotely the color of my hair. Luckily, I have a lot of hair to hide ribbons in.
THE BOOTS
I bought these boots but I love them so much they get their own entry. Spring Step has a whole collection called "L'Artiste" and the shoes are SO beautiful and I love them SO much and I bought these shoes for me and me alone, but they ended up working great with the costume.
CONCLUSION
I FINALLY got to wear this costume for Halloween! I expect to wear it for the next ten Halloweens straight.
Tumblr media
FIN.

Step into Comfort: Podiatrist-Approved Shoes for Women's Foot Health
When it comes to footwear, comfort and style often go hand in hand. However, for women who prioritize the health of their feet, finding shoes that are both fashionable and supportive can be a challenge. Fortunately, there are brands and styles that have earned the seal of approval from podiatrists for promoting foot health without compromising on style. In this comprehensive guide, we'll explore the healthiest shoes for women's feet, including podiatrist-approved options like Mary Jane shoes, Thom McAn shoes, Corkys shoes, and more. Before delving into specific shoe options, it's essential to understand why prioritizing foot health is so crucial.
Tumblr media
Understanding the Importance of Foot Health
Mary Jane shoes are a timeless classic that not only adds a touch of femininity to any outfit but also offers excellent support for the feet. Look for Mary Jane shoes with features like adjustable straps, cushioned insoles, and supportive arches to ensure optimal comfort and stability. Thom McAn is a brand known for its commitment to quality and comfort. Their shoes often feature padded insoles, shock-absorbing outsoles, and durable construction, making them an excellent choice for women seeking supportive footwear without sacrificing style. Corkys shoes are beloved for their laid-back vibe and exceptional comfort. Whether you opt for their stylish sandals or casual sneakers, Corkys shoes typically feature cushioned footbeds and flexible materials that promote healthy foot mechanics. l'artiste shoes combine artistry with functionality, making them a favorite among podiatrists and fashionistas alike. With hand-painted details, supportive footbeds, and high-quality materials, L'Artiste shoes offer both style and comfort in equal measure.
Choosing the Right Fit: Investing in Foot Health
In addition to selecting podiatrist-approved brands, it's essential to choose shoes that fit properly. Ill-fitting shoes can cause a host of foot problems, including blisters, calluses, and even ingrown toenails. When trying on shoes, be sure to measure both feet, as they may differ in size. Look for clog shoes with ample toe room, a snug heel fit, and enough width to accommodate the natural shape of your foot. While podiatrist-approved shoes may come with a slightly higher price tag, investing in foot health is well worth it in the long run. By wearing supportive footwear that promotes proper alignment and comfort, women can prevent common foot ailments and enjoy an active, pain-free lifestyle. When shopping for orthopedic shoes, comfort should be your top priority. Look for features like cushioned insoles, arch support, and shock-absorbing soles, which can help alleviate pressure and reduce pain while walking or standing for extended periods. Brands like Spring Step and Corkys offer orthopedic shoes with innovative comfort technologies that prioritize foot health without sacrificing style.
Understanding Your Needs: The Importance of Supportive Design
Before diving into the world of heels, it's essential to understand your specific needs and preferences. Consider factors such as your daily routine, the amount of walking you typically do, and any foot issues or concerns you may have. By identifying your needs upfront, you can narrow down your options and focus on finding heels that meet your requirements for comfort and style. When it comes to all-day wear, supportive design is key. Look for heels with features like cushioned insoles, arch support, and padded footbeds, which can help alleviate pressure on your feet and provide added comfort throughout the day. Brands like Alegria and spring step prioritize supportive design in their shoes, making them an excellent choice for women seeking both style and comfort.Heel height plays a significant role in comfort, so it's essential to choose wisely. While sky-high stilettos may be tempting, they're not always the most practical option for all-day wear. Instead, opt for heels with a moderate height, such as two to three inches, which provide a good balance of elevation and stability. Brands like Spring Step and Corkys offer stylish heels with manageable heights that are perfect for extended wear.
Conclusion
prioritizing foot health doesn't mean sacrificing style. With podiatrist-approved options like Mary Jane shoes, Thom McAn shoes, Corkys shoes, and L'Artiste shoes, women can enjoy the best of both worlds: fashionable footwear that promotes optimal foot health. By choosing shoes that offer support, cushioning, and proper fit, women can step into comfort and confidence every day.
