The First Corvettes To Race At Le Mans – The Cunningham 1960 Chevrolet Corvette
In 1960 the Americans would arrive at the world’s most famous endurance race with a bang – three specially prepared 1960 Chevrolet Corvettes rolled off the trucks at the Circuit de la Sarthe to challenge for wins at the 24 Hours of Le Mans for the first time.
The truth of the matter is that the Europeans were almost entirely dominant in both pre and post-WW2 top flight motor racing. The Brits, Italians, Germans, and French knew how to make the fastest cars in the world and the Americans often weren’t taken particularly seriously in races outside their own borders.
The 1960 Le Mans would go a long way towards changing this preconception.
Briggs, Zora, and $11,730.24 Worth of Corvettes
The team behind the development of the Corvette was led by Zora Arkus-Duntov, a fascinating man who had been born to Russian parents when they lived in Belgium, then raised largely in Berlin before fleeing to joint the French Air Force and fight the Nazis when WW2 broke out.
After the fall of France Zora and his family left Europe for the the United States, where they fell in love with the country, staying there for the rest of their lives. Zora had always loved fast vehicles, he started out with motorcycle racing before moving to cars, he proved both a highly capable engineer and a world class racing driver – achieving class victories in 1954 and 1955 24 Hours of Le Mans driving for Porsche.
In 1953 Zora had started working at GM and by 1955 he was the director of high performance at Chevrolet, he led the engineering of the Corvette, turning it from a 6-cylinder light sports car into a V8-powered racer that would take on the best in the world – and win.
After the 1955 Le Mans Disaster many manufacturers had left motor racing to the privateers, Chevrolet was one of them, much to Arkus-Duntov’s chagrin – he wanted to test the mettle of the Corvette against Europe’s best.
In the late 1950s Arkus-Duntov convinced Briggs Cunningham to take three Corvettes to Le Mans as a privateer – Cunningham was born into staggering wealth but he’d always shown much more interest in racing than money management, particularly yacht and automobile racing. By the late 1950s he’d already won the America’s Cup yacht race, the most prestigious in the world, and Arkus-Duntov talked him into entering three competition-prepared Corvettes at Le Mans.
Cunningham was no newcomer to Le Mans, he’s had developed and raced his own prototype sports cars at the event, taking a class win in 1953 with the Cunningham C5-R. His team had raced modified American road cars and prototypes extensively at Le Mans since 1950, becoming fan favourites in the process.
Entering the 1960 Le Mans
The Cunningham team bought three 1960 Corvettes from Don Allen Chevrolet, each was optioned to the gills with every performance tweak available including a 290 hp fuel-injected V8, quick-ratio steering, heavy-duty sintered-metallic brake linings, heavy-duty suspension, a close-ratio four-speed transmission, a Positraction limited-slip differential, a radio delete, and a temperature-controlled radiator fan.
Before shipping the cars to Europe they fitted a series of their own upgrades including Stewart Warner gauges, a Halibrand quick release fuel cap, Halibrand knock off wheels with Firestone racing tires, Koni competition shock absorbers, Bendix fuel pumps (a primary and a back-up), an additional front additional sway bar, a 37 gallon fuel tank, brake ducting from the grille area and a cooling duct from drivers side front bumper area (directing cooling air to the driver through the foot well), two seats from a Douglas C-47 Skytrain aircraft, and Sebring exhausts that exit in front of the rear tires.
The Corvettes would face stiff competition in Europe, they’d be racing against the Ferrari 250 TR59, the Aston Martin DBR1, the Porsche 718, the Ferrari 250 GT SWB, the Porsche 356B Carrera, the Triumph TRS, the Maserati Tipo 61, the Jaguar E2A, the Alfa Romeo Giulietta SV Spyder, and a number of others.
The race took place over the 25th and 26th of June, Ferrari needed an outright win at Le Mans to take the FIA World Sports Car Championship title, so they brought 8 of their best cars. The race was always going to be a challenge but during the third hour a storm swept across the track bringing torrential rain which caused a number of accidents, shaking up the running order.
The rain continued intermittently throughout the night but began to clear by the morning, sadly two of the three Corvettes had been falling by the wayside, one of the cars had been rolled and was out of the race and another got stuck in the sand by the truck – losing valuable time before being recovered and getting back into the race (this was the car shown here).
By the time the chequered flag fell one of the Corvettes was still running – it took a class win at Le Mans and finished 8th overall. This was a great result for the first Corvette outing at the famous event, and although they didn’t know it at the time it was just the first of many, Corvettes have been racing at Le Mans for decades since.

The 1960 Chevrolet Corvette Shown Here
The car you see here is one of the three original 1960 Le Mans Corvettes, it’s been restored back to its original 1960 livery and specifications, and it won the Preservation Award at the 2016 San Marino Motoring Classic, as well as the Corvette class at the 2008 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance.
The car is now in the care of Bruce Meyer, a well known classic car enthusiast who specialises in historically significant automobiles. If you’d like to see it in person the good news is that you can – the car is one of the main exhibits at the Petersen Automotive Museum’s new exhibit dedicated to the cars owned by Meyer.

Hot In Cleveland
Greetings to literally no one! Hopefully that will change....
I’ve had this account for a while now and I’ve finally thought about what I want to use it for.
Starting today, this will be a literary analysis of some of the entertainment media I have consumed over the years. Why you ask? Hmmmm, that’ll be for a later post. I hope that you enjoy reading this!
WARNING: THESE POSTS WILL UNASHAMEDLY CONTAIN SPOILERS!
Today, we’ll begin with a sitcom that’s very close to my heart - Hot In Cleveland
[cue title music - ba ba ba baaaa... ba ba baaa... dwing dwing HEY!]
Tumblr media
PREMISE
Hot in Cleveland first premiered in 2010 on TV Land as their first ever original production. Up until that point, the network was well known for airing reruns of previously ended shows, such as The Cosby Show and The Golden Girls. One of the producers of the show was Sean Hayes of Will & Grace fame.
The show revolves around three middle-aged women bound for Paris to forget their troubles of broken hearts and struggling careers when their plane makes a emergency landing in Cleveland, Ohio. Deciding to explore the city, they find it a more compassionate and welcoming than the glamorous, youth obsessed Los Angeles and decide to relocate there. When they rent a house, they find it comes with a decidedly snarky housekeeper.
CAST & CHARACTERS
Tumblr media
Valerie Bertinelli as Melanie Moretti - a recently divorced one-time author, she has known very little beyond her roles as mother and wife. She tends to be very optimistic and romantic, often to the annoyance of her friends. Out of the younger trio, she takes the most to Cleveland and tries new things to broaden her horizons. She is the most compassionate out of the three, often being the glue that binds them together. Though she’s a very nice character to watch, she lacks true grit and comes off as a pushover at times. I don’t know much about Valerie’s work before the show, but she does do quite well, with her natural warmth and friendliness coming through.
Tumblr media
Wendie Malick as Victoria Chase - an ambitious but ditzy soap opera actress, she has just had her show cancelled and falls into despair at not being in the public eye anymore. Self-centered and willing to do almost anything, Victoria is the least enthusiastic about moving to Cleveland due to the lack of botox and paparazzi among other things. Over time, she takes on various projects to try and revive her career, resulting in an Emmy & Oscar win. Wendie Malick is best known for her role on Just Shoot Me as well as her voice acting in various shows and movies, such as The Emperor’s New Groove and BoJack Horseman. She’s an absolute delight to watch here, completely immersing herself in the role and surrendering to Victoria’s insanity.
Tumblr media
Jane Leeves as Rejoyla ‘Joy’ Scroggs - a beautician with a business that’s starting to fail, Joy’s real problem is being unlucky in love. From being abandoned by her teenage sweetheart when she fell pregnant by him, to being left at the altar on her wedding day, Joy’s endless parade of bad luck has left her cynical and just a tad yandere for any man who dares cross her (watch out boys...). She’s neutral to Cleveland, but secretly longs for romance and eventually settling down to start a family. Jane is best known for her work on Fraiser. She’s initially a bit frigid over the first two seasons but warms up to the role as she gains more prominence in the show over the later seasons.
Tumblr media
Betty White as Elka Ostrovsky - an escapee from WWII Poland, she is a widow who lives in the house as a caretaker. Though she finds the LA trio’s obsession with glitz and glamour very strange, she quickly makes friends with them to varying degrees, often dispensing advice and acting as a voice of reason when the others get a bit too crazy or feel despondent. She is very proud of Cleveland, eventually becoming its mayor and is not averse to doing things outside of the law. Betty White has a career in television spanning over 80 years. She was initially only supposed to appear in the pilot episode but the audience response was quite positive so the producers upgraded her to series regular.
STRUCTURE, WRITING & DEVELOPMENT
The series plays out as a typical slice-of-life sitcom. The idea of older women living together and going through life isn’t new - think Golden Girls in the modern era and you pretty much have the gist of the show. However, is that such a bad thing? I think every TV era needs a show that focuses on the challenges one faces as the march of time proceeds; something that feels comfortable without pushing the boundaries too much and HiC was that for a generation who missed out on Betty White’s previous hit show. It wasn’t cerebral watching and it didn’t need to be.
In line with this, many of the plots are taken out from well known tropes that have developed over the years. Love triangles, a vapid rivalry in Hollywood, false pregnancies and lost loves returning all play part in the show’s six season run, edited and polished for character context. This is a big part of why the show felt so familiar to many viewers. Script structures followed one of three methods:
Characters A & B take part in subplot 1 whilst C & D take part in subplot 2 - this proves most effective for humor, balancing out the plot and giving each character something to work with
Characters A & B take part in subplot 1, C in subplot 2 and D in subplot 3 - this proves most effective for character development but can feel too scattered at times
Characters A, B, C & D take part in the main plot - this is most effective for plot lines, usually occurring at season premieres or finales
In terms of character development, the main trio of ladies find fulfillment in each other’s status. I’ll explain:
Melanie was an author but didn’t really have much experience in the working world, choosing instead to derive her satisfaction from being a mother and a wife. Now that her marriage is over and her kids are in college, she feels lost and doesn’t know what to do with herself. Over the course of the show, she has a series of meaningful relationships but develops the most in her career;becoming a column writer, a public relations assistant, a radio show host and a restaurant manager. This is what Victoria was trying to achieve at the beginning of the show.
Victoria is an out of work actress who has to resort to all sorts of tricks to get back into the public eye. Her approach is hit and miss, but she eventually goes on to win an Emmy and an Oscar, along with some work in critically acclaimed stage plays and a brief period as a news reporter. Despite this, she finds more satisfaction in her love life (despite being married EIGHT times!), eventually marrying her one true love at the end of the series. This is what Joy was trying to achieve at the start.
Joy is struggling as a beautician who looks for love in handsome men and one night stands, but never seems to catch a break. Her love life goes from bad to worse and her relationships fail due to a combination of her own issues with trust and the fact that the men she loves aren’t that great to begin with. She eventually puts her cynicism and stalking tendencies (I told you to watch out for her!) to good use, studying criminology and becoming a private detective. She also reconnects with her son that she gave up for adoption and gleefully accepts when she finds out that she’s a grandmother. Long story short, she’s looking for stability and finds it in the most unlikely man, becoming a wife and a mother at the end of the show. This is what Melanie was looking for at the start of the show.
Over the first three seasons, a heavy emphasis is placed on Elka due to the show trying to capitalize on Betty White’s resurgence in popularity at the time. This is in spite of the fact that Elka kind of feels like a lost puzzle piece. She doesn’t really fit in to the whole cohesiveness of the other three characters. This is changed in season 4, when the character of Mamie Sue (played by Georgia Engel, Betty’s costar from The Mary Tyler Moore Show) is promoted to a recurring character. It not only gives a nice chemistry to a previously ill fitting character, it creates a parallel with the LA trio: Mamie Sue is a combination of Victoria’s airheadedness and Melanie’s kindness to Joy’s cynicism found in Elka.
The show starts off quite shakily, despite its hype, but takes a turn for the better around the fourth season. The frivolous story lines from earlier episodes are eschewed for more long term plots with more emotional impact. Themes of loneliness, love at middle age and returning to correct past regrets are explored quite deeply. The show also loses some of the LA stereotypes as it goes on.
Some really big names are booked as guest stars, some notable ones being:
Susan Lucci as a parody of herself, being Victoria’s arch-nemesis
Joe Jonas as Will, Melanie’s son
Craig Ferguson as Simon, Joy’s first love and babydaddy
Jon Lovitz as Artie Firestone, an eccentric billionaire who takes an interest in Joy
Heather Locklear as Chloe, one of Melanie’s bosses at her PR job
The entire cast of The Mary Tyler Moore Show as G.L.O.B. (Gorgeous Ladies of Bowling)
Alan Dale as Sir Emmet Lawson, a renowned actor and Victoria’s sixth husband
Rick Springfield as a parody of himself
BULLSEYES & IMPROVEMENTS
What the show gets right:
Exploring the crossroads many women face at middle age, in terms of the main aspects of life: family, love & career
Great acting, especially in the later seasons
Wendie Malick - she deserved an Emmy nomination for her acting here
Jennifer Love Hewitt as Emmy, Victoria’s eldest daughter. Seriously, watch her episodes and tell me they aren’t funny
The general lack of pressure - you don’t need much attention to cycle in and out of the show, it’s easy watching
The consistency and plot development post season 3
What I think should be improved upon:
Melanie can be TOO nice, something that’s actually picked upon by other characters. Her cancer subplot was a nice opportunity to get some grit, but most of it was just by the way and not fully delved into
Victoria’s job as a news reporter was forgotten as soon as she landed a part in a Woody Allen movie. It would have been nice for her to be in that occupation a bit more or go back to it after her Oscar win and give her a chance to be on the other side of fame
Elka’s love life - every boyfriend seems to be a copy of the other and there are way too many of them
CULTURAL & PERSONAL IMPACT
This article from the A.V. Club goes into detail about the show and I have to say, I agree with it wholeheartedly agree. HiC was a reminder of what was before the more intellectual comedies came along. It shamelessly pandered to an older generation who wanted something familiar in an ever changing landscape. The fact that it didn’t take many risks in its approach was a risk in itself. It was clearly one that paid off, given the six season run. It wasn’t a darling of the critics, but it didn’t need to be. This was a show that could be watched to generate a few laughs without the need for in depth discussion with a coworker in the break room the next day.
A few years after the show’s cancellation, Valerie Bertinelli expressed her anger at TV Land for the decision, calling it sexist. I can’t really comment on that, given that I’m not too familiar with TV Land’s other work, but I will say that HiC did what it had to do. Six seasons in an age where you’re lucky to get more than three is amazing. The plot lines tied up quite nicely at the end and in the end, that’s all that everyone wanted.
Personally, I watched this show at two very difficult times in my life. The first was at college during my final year, when deadlines loomed and twisted my stomach in anxiety. The second was a few months ago when I had quit my job and needed something to distract me from the depression. On both occasions, this show has really made me laugh and fall in love with its simplicity. It’s undemanding and solid, just what I need to get through a trying period.

COST Roofing Cost – What To Expect Commercial Roofing Company near Las Vegas NV:  Need to have a new roof installed? It’s important to consider the average project cost for your budget. Different types of roofing systems have different installation costs. So there is not a one-size-fits-all approach in estimating the overall cost. That being said, there are a few factors that affect roofing costs: Roof size First of all, the larger a roof is, the higher the roof’s installation cost will be. A large roof requires more labor, material, and overall effort. Therefore, the installation cost of larger sized roofs will always be an important factor in determining the cost of a roof replacement. Roof layout Even if you have a small roof, its installation cost may rise if it has complex layout ridges, multiple surfaces, etc. In other words, the more problematic or complex your roof structure is, the more time and effort will be required to work on it. As such, you can expect the total installation cost to increase. Roofing material The cost of roofing materials shingles, clay tile, or slate stone can be an important factor in the total cost. In general, asphalt shingles are the most popular material due to their low cost from mass material production. On the other hand, slate and clay roofs are among the most expensive roofing materials. Besides materials, roofing accessories, such as rain gutters, chimney flashings, etc. can also increase the total project cost.  Roofing accessories such as drip edges and pro starter strips help enhance the durability and longevity of a roofing system, and as such add to the total cost. Labor The cost of labor depends on the area and skill set of the contractors. Roof pitch If you have a steep pitched roof, you will need to pay more for the project. As compared to a flat or low sloping roof, a steep roof will require more time and be more challenging because the roof is not walkable. The high risk involved in installing shingles on a steep roof causes the overall cost to increase. Roof layers For multiple roof layers, the project cost will rise. Roofing contractors will need to remove additional old layers, which results in more labor and dumping fees. As such the cost will increase accordingly. Annual Season Last, but not least, the season has an influence on a roofing project. The demand for roofing contractors surges in fall. It’s during this season that costs escalate. Estimated costs The following are estimated costs for different types of roofing systems: ● Asphalt shingle: $4,500 to $7,500 (1,500 square feet) ● Flat roof: $6,000-$10,000 (1,000 square feet) ● Clay tile: $16,000 and $25,000 (1,500 square feet) Before installing a new roof, be sure to ask your roofing professional for an estimate.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS How Long Will My Commercial Roof Last? Watershed works with clients to achieve a superior quality commercial roof installation backed by a superior warranty. Most manufacturers of TPO membranes, for instance, will allow ONLY their certified installers like Watershed to extend 20 yr No Dollar Limit (NDL) warranties to customers. All warranties require technical inspection by the manufacturer; having passed inspection and award of the 20 yr NDL, a new commercial roofing system will last 20-30 years in Colorado, and the warranties are transferable.
What is the Best Commercial Roofing Material For My Roof and My Budget? TPO and PVC single-ply membranes, EPDM, Modified Bitumen, and various silicone roof coatings may provide the most reliable solution depending on whether full replacement or a repair is required. Building use and architectural design, existing roof apparatus, or even environmental conditions unique to your property can easily influence the decision to choose one type of roofing over another.
Can I Put a New Roof Over My Old One? Simply refer to building code for your property’s current roofing requirements, or contact Watershed for a quick answer. In most cases, one roofing system is allowable over an existing roof system. However, careful consideration must first be given to the current structural condition, any existing moisture contained within the old system, or other building codes and warranty criteria when making a decision to overlay a new membrane on top of an older roof system.
What Types of Low Slope (Flat) Roofing Do You Offer? Watershed holds certification and master installation qualifications in a wide variety of flat roof scenarios, from high rise multi-tenant residential and business office buildings, to new construction applications and retro-fit of new roofing membrane at older properties where current systems are failing or simply in need of an upgrade.
Do I have to replace my roof if it leaks? Not necessarily, leaks can happen for a variety of reasons; from easily repairable problems with “flashing conditions” (where a/c units, vents or skylights are located) to more complicated issues of extreme wear. Our representative will come out and assess the situation for you, at no charge. We will provide you with a written estimate of the cost associated with your problem and tell you exactly what work is necessary. Tip: Don’t wait for the roof to leak, we’d be happy to come out and give you a free maintenance assessment.
What should I do if my roof is leaking? Put a bucket under the leak to catch the water!   Then call us immediately. We will send a member of our service staff out ASAP to fix the problem. We are at your service 24/7.
Is there anything I can do to save money on my energy bills? Yes, if you choose one of Best Roofing’s Cool Roof Systems combined with additional roof-top insulation you can make a major impact on your energy bills. In most cases, these systems also qualify for a FPL rebate.
What should I do when my roof gets dirty? Call Best Roofing for maintenance. Depending on your specific situation and roof type, we will remove leaves and debris; clean and coat your roof; and periodically check your roof for leaks to maintain maximum energy efficiency.
What type of Warranty do you offer? Warranties are always dependent on the roof system selected and the scope of the work that we perform; and range anywhere from 1 year up to 50 years. The best way to select a roof is not on a warranty basis. Instead, focus on selecting the right roof system for your particular needs. Your Best Roofing representative can show you how to do this, provide information and guidance about material performance, and work within your budget.
How long will it take to service my roof? Each roof job is different; it really depends on the nature of the job. Simple repairs can take much less time than a complete replacement. When we give you a bid, we specify the scope of the work to be provided. You will receive a budget that will reflect the exact number of man hours needed to complete your project. Your account manager will review the information with you and provide a reasonable forecast for completion; so you’ll know just what to expect.
How can I prevent my roof from blowing off during a storm? During a major storm such as a hurricane anything can happen. However, we will provide you with a roofing system that is approved by the Las Vegas NV-Dade building code. This code is the toughest building code in the Nation today. Every roof system we install is designed to withstand wind gusts of 140 mph. Many roof systems we install are designed to withstand wind in excess of a category 5 hurricane. Consider: During Hurricane Wilma not one of our flat roof systems was blown off.
Is roof maintenance really important? Routine maintenance extends the life of your roof. The National Roofing Contractors Association states: once the roof is installed, nothing is more critical to its long-term performance than establishing a program of regular inspections and proper maintenance”. If you perform regular preventative maintenance you can in some cases double the life of the roof system. Best Roofing offers routine maintenance programs. You can choose different levels of coverage that are tailored to your budget. Ask your Best Roofing representative for details.

How much does it cost to repair a tire?
On average, tire puncture repair will cost you between $10 and $20. The repair will involve getting the tire patched. Some tire dealers will repair a punctured tire for free if you purchased your tire from them. It is really a nice service to have at your disposal, and it makes you want to do business with them again.
How much is it to patch a tire at Discount Tire?
Flat tire repairs due to a nail can charge anywhere from $10 to $20. Discount Tires offers free flat tire repairs, no matter where you bought your tires from.
How much does fixing a flat tire cost?
So what does it cost to repair a flat tire? Again, it depends on the extent of the damage. If you catch a simple puncture early enough, a repair will generally cost between $15 and $30. Run flat tires are an exception; they cost more to repair, and in many cases they need complete replacement.
When should you not patch a tire?
Repair of any punctures in the shoulder and sidewall areas are not permitted. This tire has been punctured in the tread area by a screw less than 1/4" in diameter. If no internal damage is found when the tire is dismounted, this puncture can be repaired following industry guidelines and the tire returned to service.
What Can I Expect When I Call?
When you call our mobile tire repair service your call is answered by one of our employees. Our employees know exactly how to assess the situation so we help you the best way possible.
The dispatcher will ask questions like “What tire is flat?” and “Can you see any thing in the tire such as a nail?”
Once everything is confirmed as type of car and location the dispatcher will assign a tire technician and send them to you.

Excellent question. A mobile tire repair costs start at $75 and can range from there depending on distance, type of tire, or time of day/night.  The average cost of a mobile tire repair is $100.
How Long Does The Flat Tire Repair Take?
The time to repair a tire can range on many factors such as tire size, location of flat, and so forth. The average tire for repair is about 30 minutes to 45 minutes on-site.
Is it Safe to Repair a Tire?
Certainly, as long as the puncture is located in the Crown of the tire. There are tire shops that will repair anything that comes there way.  A professional tire service will inspect the tire for proper tire repair. We strictly follow this rule so as to keep our customer safe  A life is never worth as much as a tire
Can I Pay To Repair My Flat Tire With a Credit Card?
Yes.  We accept all major credit cards, cash, and Com Check. We do not accept company or personal checks for flat tire repair services.

That’s Terry Forkner in the back of Vern Autry’s Bike. This may bore the shit out of some of you, but this an account of Hollister by key players. Memories: Founders of Boozefighters recall weekend they descended on a small town and ascended into legend. Before there was Sonny Barger and the Hells Angels, before there was Marlon Brando and "The Wild One," there was Wino Willie and J.D. and a South-Central Los Angeles motorcycle club called the Boozefighters. On the Fourth of July, 1947, the Boozefighters invaded the Central California hamlet of Hollister and, as Life magazine memorialized it, took over the town. The incident set off a growing fascination with outlaw bikers, culminating in Brando's legendary "The Wild One" in 1954, with one exchange that still reverberates: "What are you rebelling against, Johnny?" Brando's character was asked. "Whatdaya got?" he snapped. Today, 75-year-old Wino Willie Forkner and 80-year-old J.D. Cameron--the last surviving founders of the Boozefighters--look back on their legacy with amusement. To visit with them in Cameron's La Mirada home is to recall a distant time when postwar America was bursting with unfocused energy. "It was a time when you could have a fistfight with someone and when it was over, you'd have a beer together," says Cameron, who made his living in the freight-unloading and trucking businesses, where he employed Willie. "This was way before all this guns and dope crap." "Yeah, we just had a little fun," says Forkner, a barrel-chested World War II vet with pinkies as thick as thumbs who lives in Fort Bragg, Calif., and still rides his motorcycle. "We didn't do anything wrong." What happened in Hollister, they remember, started with city-approved street racing on the main drag, San Benito Street. Well, maybe a little more. J.D. allows that he may have had a few fistfights. And then Wino Willie begins talking about a town drunk who came into one of the bars. "Me, Kokomo and Gas House Wilson started buying him wine," Willie says. "After his third glass, he fell over. So we tied him to this wheelchair, tied the chair to some car and dragged him around town. I looked back and he had fallen out of the chair. "So we put him on the hood and started driving again. Slowly. But he looked like he wasn't breathing, so we thought he was dead. We dropped him in an alley, covered him up with papers and took off. * "Man, later that day, when I was in jail, I looked over, and there he was, making a ruckus. It's damn hard to kill a drunk." Wino Willie, who got his nickname as a 7-year-old boy in Fresno when he would visit local wineries and indulge in the latest vintage, had landed in Hollister's jail on the charges of inciting a riot. Of course, he tells a different story. "They had arrested Red [another of the Boozefighters] for drunk and disorderly, and a bunch of the guys had gone over to the jail to break him out. Man, I went over there and told the fellas, 'Let's forget this Wild West stuff. Red needs a rest.' But, of course, the cops figured I was the leader, and they grabbed me. Later that day, the judge says he'll let me out if I listen to my wife. I told him, 'Hell no. I haven't listened to her yet and I'm not gonna start,' " he said, laughing. What caused a national stir was not the incident itself, or a San Francisco Chronicle article that described the events as "the worst 40 hours in the history of Hollister," but a single photograph in Life magazine. It showed a large man guzzling beer on a Harley with a pile of broken beer bottles lying near his front tire. J.D. and Wino to this day are infuriated by the photograph, saying it was staged. Life's one-page layout led to a Harper's Weekly article by Frank Rooney, "The Cyclist's Raid," which led to the Brando movie, which sent the image of bikers downhill faster then a wheelie on a steep hill climb. "I hated that movie," says Cameron. The most glaring discrepancy between the actual event and the movie was that, unlike the film, in which a sleepy town is stunned by an unexpected invasion of a motorcycle gang, Hollister was waiting with open arms for thousands of bikers to converge there. For more than a decade the American Motorcycle Assn. had sanctioned an event in Hollister. So on the Fourth of July weekend in 1947, an estimated 4,000 motorcyclists descended on the city of 5,000. What set that year's event apart from the others was that this time 15 members of the Boozefighters rode north from Los Angeles. Although the Boozefighters were never mentioned in the Life spread or the Brando movie, word of mouth spread. Their name was a perfect fit, and soon all the biking world knew. The Boozefighters had been formed in 1946 at the All American Cafe, a small beer joint on Firestone Boulevard near Hooper Avenue, just north of Watts. Many of the members, including Cameron and Forkner, were married. They were, by and large, a bunch of guys who loved to race motorcycles and drink beer. John Cameron was born in 1915 in Oregon and began racing motorcycles when he was 15. He was rejected for the war because of injuries from a series of crashes. He came down to Los Angeles and bought a small freight train unloading business, where he met William Forkner in 1942. Forkner, five years younger, had grown up in Fresno, where he expanded his early appreciation of fermented grape juice. Survival in the Pacific during World War II developed his zest for kicks. One day, the Army Air Corps took him off his B-24 bomber because it needed him on another. While on a mission over Iwo Jima, he watched in horror as his regular B-24 exploded and crashed. "When I came back, we were hanging out at the club and we figured, 'Let's have fun. This is what we fought to protect,' " Forkner said. The days after the vets came back were "a special time," added Cameron. "People were happy the war was over and we just wanted to enjoy life." Goldie Miller, a Fremont High graduate, met Cameron and Forkner at the All American Club. "They were some real characters," says Miller, 74, herself "a free spirit back then. They just loved to party. They wanted to be big-time professional racers, but that never happened. Sometimes they'd go out to the parking lot and duke it out, then come back in for another beer." Miller was at the Hollister event, but her recollection is fuzzy at best. "I don't remember a whole lot. I was into having fun too. If I was making book, I wouldn't have given any of them a chance to make it to 40. But, really, they were very nice people. And you knew nobody was gonna mess with you if you were with them." * The next year in Riverside, another ruckus promoted the Boozefighters' reputation for wildness. The club continued to be active through the 1950s, then simmered down. By 1970 the aging members had scattered throughout the country. Cameron bought a trucking business and kept in touch with Forkner, who was working as a trucker. Forkner--and Cameron, if heart problems don't hold him back--may be heading back to Hollister. Now a city of 24,000 that bills itself as the earthquake capital of the world, Hollister is already vibrating about the 50th anniversary of the "invasion" next year. Police and merchants believe that as many as 100,000 motorcycle enthusiasts from around the world may converge there on the Fourth of July weekend in 1997. Several groups are vying to put on a trial run celebration this summer. At Johnny's, one of the bars the Boozefighters patronized in 1947, owner Charise Tyson is looking forward to the day when the bikers return to Hollister. "I can't wait. We're gonna do big business," Tyson said. "I'm not really concerned about violence. Heck, even the Garlic Festival (in nearby Gilroy) has its problems." Across the street at Bob's Video, owner Bob Valenzuela is also in favor of the event. "People will be coming here from all over the world because they know about Hollister from the movie," he said. "This is truly holy ground for motorcyclists. It is Mecca." Today, the Boozefighters motorcycle club still exists, but it is centered in Fort Worth. Comparisons to the original club are like comparing the cushy, soft-tailed, muffled rides of today's bikes with the rigid framed, roaring Harleys of old. The club, with chapters in Virginia, New York and California, has strict rules of conduct and members include doctors, lawyers and law enforcement officers. Wino Willie and J.D. sneer at the new leadership. "When I met them they came dressed like business people," Wino Willie says. "Today, it's all about greed. We never made a dime off of this whole thing, and we don't care either." Wino Willie visited J.D. again last week. "He told me, 'Well, Wino, I'm dying,' " Willie said. "And unless he gets this pig valve operation, he will. But he's not a complainer." Cameron, a tall, well-built man, says merely that he's going in for an operation Tuesday. Then he says, "We just wanted to have some fun. And we sure did." One more question lingers. What were the real Wild Ones rebelling against? J.D. pauses for a few seconds. "Well, I guess I'm rebelling against discrimination. Ya know, all kinds, but for me, just because someone's a biker, they got rules against you." And Wino Willie? "I guess it's the establishment that I spent three years fighting for," he says. "You take off the khakis and the blue and put on some jeans and a leather jacket and immediately you become an asshole." My post script to this post is Willie didn't make it back for the 50th before he died. What kind of bike did he plan to ride back? Ducati

SAN RAMON, Calif.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–After an emotional summer journey that included tryouts and a finalist
phase held at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs,
Colorado, the United States Olympic Committee (USOC) announced the eight
individual winners of Scouting Camp: The Next Olympic Hopeful
who are now in training to compete for a spot with Team USA.
Among the eight individual athletes named winners of the competition,
two began their journey at the 24 Hour Fitness® in-club
tryouts in June: Amanda Alvarez of Seattle (skeleton) and Josh
Williamson of Orlando (bobsled).
“When I got the news via email that I’d advanced to the elimination
round, I re-read it four times to make sure it was real before running
into the living room to jump up and shove my phone (with the email) in
my boyfriend’s face,” said Amanda Alvarez, one of the winners of Scouting
Camp: The Next Olympic Hopeful and Personal Trainer, 24 Hour
Fitness. “I have always wanted to go to the Olympic Games—I believe I
was born to make Team USA.” Amanda will begin training with USA Skeleton
to compete for a spot on Team USA.
“I had absolutely no expectations when I went to the tryouts at the 24
Hour Fitness club in Winter Park,” said Josh Williamson, a college
student who has put his college academic program at Florida State
University on hold, to train with Team USA as a winner of Scouting
Camp: The Next Olympic Hopeful. “After being sidelined by
sports injuries and shoulder surgery in January, my goal this year was
to rehab. Then, The Next Olympic Hopeful tryouts happened, and
it’s completely changed my life.” Josh has begun training with USA
Bobsled for a chance to compete during the upcoming Olympic Winter Games
PyeongChang 2018.
“24 Hour Fitness is proud to partner with the USOC for Scouting Camp:
The Next Olympic Hopeful,” said Tom Lapcevic, Executive Vice
President, Chief Marketing Officer, 24 Hour Fitness. “Our goal is to
provide ‘everyday athletes’ in our clubs with the support to reach their
potential and live full, healthy lives. This project is the perfect
illustration of mindset and motivation to smash through goals to achieve
your dreams. We look forward to following the journey of these two
inspiring athletes among us.”
In the USOC’s quest to enhance the pipeline of world-class athletes
pursuing Olympic sport, Scouting Camp: The Next Olympic Hopeful
sprang to life this summer, beginning with open applications and
exclusive 24 Hour Fitness in-club tryouts nationwide. Athletes completed
a battery of tests for strength, mobility and endurance to qualify for
selection. The top 91 athletes—47 men and 44 women—were invited to spend
five days at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs to go
through an intensive screening, sport-specific training and receive
insight from leaders in sport medicine, science and psychology. This
five-day journey was documented for an NBCSN special entitled Scouting
Camp: The Next Olympic Hopeful, also revealing the eight winners of
the competition:
Amanda Alvarez, skeleton (Seattle, Washington); Josh Williamson, bobsled
(Orlando, Florida); Quentin Butler, skeleton (Arlington, Texas); Collin
Hudson, track cycling (Firestone, Colorado); Keely Kortman, track
cycling (Tustin, California); Kyle Plante, bobsled (Albany, New York);
Devin Short, rugby (Las Vegas, Nevada); and Kelli Smith, rugby
(Birmingham, Alabama).
The winners of Scouting Camp: The Next Olympic Hopeful—one
male and one female athlete per sport (eight total)—are invited to join
the national team camps of four sports: bobsled, skeleton, track cycling
and rugby. The athletes will also be eligible to receive financial,
training and medical support as they prepare for the opportunity to
compete at the Olympic Games in their identified sport.
Amanda Alvarez, Winner, The Next Olympic
Hopeful (Skeleton): A Seattle area resident and personal
trainer with 24 Hour Fitness, Amanda always aspired to become an Olympic
athlete. As a multi-sport high school and college track athlete, Amanda
advanced as a competitive triple jumper, working towards a spot in the
U.S. Olympic Team Trials – Track and Field, but ultimately missed
qualifying by three inches. She participated in the 24 Hour Fitness
in-club tryouts for The Next Olympic Hopeful focused on national
sport training for rugby and ultimately was recruited for skeleton. She
will proceed to training with the national sport camp for skeleton and
the opportunity to compete for a future spot with Team USA.
Josh Williamson, Winner, The Next Olympic
Hopeful (Bobsled): Josh is an Orlando area resident who
played Division I lacrosse. After numerous injuries, he dropped sports
to turn his attention to academics, enrolling into Florida State
University, where he discovered the sport of bobsled. Following shoulder
surgery in January, he began rehabilitation with the goal to return to
full athletic strength. He decided to participate in The Next Olympic
Hopeful tryouts at 24 Hour Fitness. Not only was Josh named a winner
of The Next Olympic Hopeful, he will train with Team USA bobsled
to compete for a spot to go to the Olympic Winter Games PyeongChang 2018.

Johnny Marr – ©Olivier Hoffschir

VinePair Happy Hour: What Are You Drinking on New Years Eve?
Tumblr media
New Year’s Eve is almost here, and while it might look different than previous years, we at VinePair will be happily welcoming 2021’s arrival with drinks in hand.
While for many the celebration is basically synonymous with sparkling wine in flute glasses, the VinePair team is seeking out celebratory libations of all sorts on Dec. 31. While some of us are going the traditional route and sipping bubbly, others are choosing unconventional options.
Need some inspiration to get in the NYE spirit? Once you’ve planned your virtual or podded celebration, you’ll need to make sure your glass is filled with something equally as festive. From beer to bourbon to bubbly of all sorts, here’s what we’ll be drinking during midnight Zoom toasts and at podded gatherings.
“While it doesn’t feel like there was a lot to celebrate this year, no New Year’s Eve is complete without Champagne. I’ll be glad to say ‘bye-bye’ to 2020 by popping a bottle of Pierre Peters Blanc de Blancs. I can’t think of a better way to end 2020 and look to brighter days ahead in 2021.” —Adam Teeter, co-founder & CEO
“I’ll be spending New Year’s with my parents for the first time in ages. We’ll probably start with Martinis and then pop a bottle of Pinot Noir with dinner — either something nice from Burgundy or one of my father’s favorite California producers.” —Josh Malin, co-founder & president
“NYE is the Super Bowl for drinks enthusiasts, and the perfect excuse to pull out some of your best bottles. This year, I’ll start with a Monkey 47 Martini (dry with a twist) then move onto a Michter’s Toasted Barrel Rye Manhattan. I haven’t planned a food menu yet, but whatever I cook will have to pair with the bottle of Pierre Peters Blanc de Blancs Cuvée I already have on ice. If that doesn’t quite see me through to the bells, I’ll be singing “Auld Lang Syne” with a dram of something old and Scottish in hand. Slàinte Mhath!” —Tim McKirdy, staff writer
“I’ll be making my way through some special vintage bottles, starting with something less fizzy: Firestone Walker’s 2018 Stickee Monkee, a barrel-aged ‘Central Coast Quad’ that I’ve been saving since I picked it up earlier this year at the historic Fraunces Tavern. Don’t let the silly-sounding name deter you: This beer is deep, and it offers a lot to be excited about in the barrel department. It’s firstly inspired by the Beglian Quadrupel style, which is strong, malty, spicy, and sweet. This bottling spent over a year aging in Woodford Reserve, Elijah Craig, and Four Roses bourbon barrels, which is sort of unbelievable, but also true. Part of the philosophy behind this beer is the inevitability of change. If you’re still not convinced, Stickee Monkee makes up 26 percent of Firestone Walker Anniversary Ale XXIV, which VinePair recently named the best beer of 2020. By the way, Stickee Monkee is named for a flower. ” —Cat Wolinski, senior editor
“Since 2020 lasted for approximately five years, my household decided it was only fitting for our 10-second countdown to last for 10 hours. We’ll be popping a different bottle of bubbly every hour on the hour, including La Marca Prosecco, Laurent-Perrier La Cuvee Brut, Moet & Chandon Imperial Brut, Charles Heidsieck Brut Reserve Champagne, Veuve Clicquot Brut Champagne, and Mumm Napa Brut Prestige — plus a few more that have yet to be decided.” —Jenny Robble, marketing intern
“My New Year’s Eve in will consist of something pink and bubbly, followed by living room dancing.” —Katie Brown, editorial associate
“Being a part of the VinePair team the past couple of months, I’ve been inspired to reach outside of my usual comfort zone of wine on New Year’s Eve. In addition to imbibing Segura Viudas Brut Reserva Cava to start the evening, I’ve got a bottle of Avion Reserva 44 tequila that I’ll cheers with on the rocks at midnight.” —Nicole McKay, editorial intern
“I believe that the energy you bring into NYE is the energy you will carry for the majority of the incoming year. For that reason, I’m going to be mixing escapist cocktails like Piña Coladas and Margaritas in a strong attempt to manifest some good vibes for 2021.” —Jeff Licciardello, director of marketing
“For New Year’s Eve, I’ll be creating the Sidecar cocktail, a classic with history. It’s perfect for ringing in the New Year!” —Jenny Riddell, director, brand partnerships & events
“I still don’t know what I will be doing for New Year’s Eve this year! However, I think it would be really cool to try a Champagne cocktail since I’ve never created one by myself. I have a ton of booze that I took home from the VinePair office last year that’s been collecting dust for the past few months, so I’m hoping to experiment with something fun and festive!” —Danielle Grinberg, art director
“Instead of partying, we’ll just be eating on NYE, so it’s brisket and the Dutton-Goldfield Russian River Valley Zinfandel 2018.” —Keith Beavers, tastings director
“To get ready for the New Year, I’ll be drinking a cold glass of coconut water with a generous splash of bourbon. I recently tried a Distiller’s Select Single Barrel Bourbon from Black Button — a serious N.Y. craft distiller — so I’ll probably switch to sipping straight before midnight. ” —Emma Cranston, editorial intern
“This year has been a surprise for all of us. So for this New Year’s Eve, I’m going to stick with something classic and have a glass of good ol’ bubbly. The botttle that I’m gonna go for is the Freixenet Cordon Negro Brut. The first time I had it was this Thanksgiving, and I was really surprised with how crisp and delicious it was. I’ve been waiting for a good occasion to drink more of it ever since. At less than $20, it’s definitely a steal.” —Gerry Selian, junior designer
“For NYE, I will probably be making an Irish Coffee. I have been on a kick recently and I feel like cold weather is a great excuse to mix coffee and alcohol.” —Sophie Wasser, social media intern

Firestone Walker Mocha Merlin
Press Release
Paso Robles, CA: With an infusion of local roast coffee, a dash of cocoa nibs and touch of seasonal sorcery, Firestone Walker’s signature Velvet Merlin oatmeal stout has been transformed into Mocha Merlin for fall and early winter.
“This is an iteration of Velvet Merlin that we’ve dabbled in before, and we finally decided to scale it up,” said Brewmaster Matt Brynildson. “It takes Merlin to another level and it’s a perfect sipper for the season.”
Mocha Merlin begins rolling out this week in draft and 12-ounce cans (six pack) formats to all Firestone Walker markets.
Mocha Merlin is brewed with the Colombia La Granadilla blend from HoneyCo Coffee Roasters. HoneyCo is owned by two local entrepreneurs, Jon and Sara Peterson, who also operate the popular Scout coffeehouse in downtown San Luis Obispo.
“We wanted to work with a local roaster who could provide coffee of excellent quality and consistency, and HoneyCo fit the bill perfectly,” Brynildson said. “Their Colombia La Granadilla blend really meshes well with the chocolaty character from the cocoa nibs.”
The cocoa nibs are sourced from Ghana. “Rather than using processed chocolate, we wanted to use a pure chocolate precursor with no sugar added,” Brynildson said. “It really integrates into the beer.”
The coffee is added straight into the fermentation tank, similar to the dry hopping process. The cocoa nibs are secured in mesh bags and steeped into the beer. The base beer of Mocha Merlin is the milk stout version of the original Velvet Merlin recipe, with lactose incorporated into the brew for a rounded mouthfeel and a suggestion of sweetness.
“The inclusion of milk sugar adds dimension to the mouthfeel and helps knit the coffee and cocoa qualities together on the palate,” Brynildson said.

Cheap thrills: Racing custom Coleman mini bikes with Icon
Our friends at Icon Motosports have a few screws loose—and we mean that as a compliment. The riding gear they produce is wild, but the bikes they build in their Portland workshop are even wilder.
So when Icon decided to spice up the annual dealer show of parent company Parts Unlimited, things got real weird, real quick. They decided to rally their friends in the biz, and organize a no-holds-barred custom challenge…with Coleman mini bikes. [More]
Arizona-based Coleman jumped on board with six BT200Xs: tiny air-cooled mini bikes that normally cost $799. They’re powered by a 196cc four-stroke single, weigh less than 140 pounds, and are good for a top speed of 20 mph.
The ICON Mini Bike Roundup was underway. Icon took one BT200X for themselves, then handed out the rest to Biltwell Inc, S&S Cycle, Performance Machine, The Speed Merchant and LA Choppers.
Each shop was under strict instructions to do whatever the heck they wanted, without removing anything from the frame or motor. Here’s how five of those six bikes turned out…
ICON 1000 Remember ICON 1000’s mental Suzuki Katana build, New Jack? Well, thanks to “a mixture of fan art inspiration and a vodka drink named the Ryobi,” the crew decided to build a tribute: Half Jack. And we’re so glad they did.
Half Jack’s tank and fairings look so right, because they’re real aftermarket Katana parts. The seat’s actually the stock Coleman unit, flipped front to back and re-upholstered by Range Needle Work.
ICON did some crazy suspension work too. The front end’s off a Ducati Monster (yes, really), and there’s now an actual swing arm out back, hooked up to a Nitron Racing piggyback shock. Other bits include aftermarket Grom wheels, EBC rotors, Magura controls, a Vortex sprocket and a Regina chain.
As for the paint job, that’s straight out of a rattle can. “It’s still covered in some beer from when someone took a keg and sprayed it all over the riders,” the guys tell us. “Personally, we think it adds to its charm.” [Icon 1000]
Biltwell Inc. When Biltwell got the invitation to throw down on mini bikes, they were instantly keen. So they handed their Coleman over to their “resident R&D nerd,” Westy, to prep for the festivities.
Westy’s approach was simple, yet highly effective: throw a bunch of rad parts at it. So this Coleman is now sporting new Biltwell handlebars and grips, with a second set repurposed on the bar bends for reasons unknown. Westy also added one of the company’s pillion pads up front, as what we’re guessing is a crotch-saver.
With the mods done, Biltwell hauled the Coleman over to Pete ‘HotDog’ Finlan, who laid down some pin striping and lettering to push it over the line. (How great are those Firestone logos on the tires?)
“Fast forward to race night…brand co-founder and man of too many words, Harold ‘McGoo’ McGruther, and our stateside dealer rep, Randy ‘Randingo’ Hernandez, paired up to throw elbows and cut corners, in what turned out to be a fun night at one of our favorite trade shows.” [Biltwell Inc]
S&S Cycle As high-performance experts, S&S Cycle were surely way out of their ballpark working on a Coleman mini bike. But they went bananas anyway, giving their BT200X a true ‘go fast, turn left’ vibe, inspired by the Indian flat track race team they sponsor.
The treated their pint-sized tracker to a stage one kit and torque convertor from Go Powersports, along with a high flow air cleaner. The exhaust is custom, while the bars, grips and pegs all came from Biltwell. As for the tail unit, that had been sitting on the S&S shelf for some time. So the guys welded some brackets to the frame and installed it.
“Testing consisted of an unanticipated wheelie in my driveway,” our contact at S&S tells us, “and a brief ride around the neighborhood. We’ve since put it on our test tack and smile every time we huck it into a corner.”
“Look for some snow tracker action and likely my hip popping out at some point in December.” [S&S Cycle]
Performance Machine This entry looks like the world’s smallest—and funnest—chopper. “The Coleman bikes are pretty cool out of the box,” the team tells us, “so all it took was a few key parts to make it even cooler.”
Up top are a set of Burly Brand ape hangars, matched up to some custom machining on the triple clamp to make them fit. The grips and throttle housing are from Performance Machine’s own catalog, and the throttle cable’s another Burly Brand part.
Other in-house parts include the headlight and gas cap. Saddlemen hooked the guys up with a sweet new perch, and Burly Brand supplied the pegs and one of their ‘bar bags,’ which now acts as a mini pannier.
Oh yeah, there’s a stage one kit from Go Powersports too. So this Coleman is… really quick? [More]
The Speed Merchant Team Speed Merchant were so enamored with the stock BT200X, it took them a couple of days to figure out what to do. But once they got cracking, the mini bike slowly morphed into a tiny clone of a H-D Fat Bob build they’d done a year and a half ago (right down to the paint).
Like S&S, Speed Merchant hooked up the motor with a stage one kit and torque convertor, plus a bigger sprocket at the rear. Then they made their own muffler by drilling out a piece of tubing. “It makes for a proper mini hooligan bike,” they say. “Loud and obnoxious.”
Saddlemen supplied the flat track tail section, and Speed Merchant fabricated a quick subframe to support it. There’s a mountain bike shock wedged in there to provide a little compliance.
There’s a custom gas tank up top, but it’s not in use. The team didn’t get round to hooking it up, but it looked so good, they didn’t have the heart to remove it either. As a final touch, they added roughly five to six inches of extra height to the bars, then coated them to match the frame.
“This bike is so much fun,” Speed Merchant tell us, “it’s become the transport of choice for us when we are in the pits at the races. Can’t wait for more pull-start racing!” [The Speed Merchant]
Everyone made it to Madison, WI in one piece, and rolled down to the Paradise Lounge where shenanigans ensued. Racing kicked off with a Le Mans-style start, followed by wheelie and burnout contests, keg rolling, two-up racing and slow racing.
“The whole experience was pretty amazing,” our ICON contacts report. “For most of us, mini bikes are where our moto obsession started. Coleman and our friends magically helped us to tap into our eight-year-old selves, when it was all about having fun.”

How Much Does A Mobile Tire Repair Cost?
