Technology in the Classroom

Forget Edmodo, my students want to communicate via Tumblr. I find this interesting but it also makes sense. As they've explained it to me, they already have a tumblr account and are familiar with how to use it (wouldn't want to have to learn something new). Whatever the case I want to make sure that when I'm away at a conference or out of the classroom students have a way to get directions, handouts and even video explanations as well as a peak into my world. Where am I when I'm not at school? What am I doing? Most of the time I'm out for the betterment of their education, sometimes it is to assist several elderly family members a few times it's been for an audition (although not recently...wow that makes me sad). Technology is ever changing the American classroom but unfortunately the school website has yet to catch up. I can't post from my phone, I can't post videos, and students can only reply via email. Not helpful if more than one student has the same question. Besides, I like everything to be public, communication between myself and my students included. I'm a public employee. Edmodo was able to accomplish most of that, except students needed a code and I'm pretty sure students weren't sharing that code with mom or dad. Public, kids, includes your parents. Sorry. So for the moment it appears as though tumblr wins.
