It was my birthday a week ago and my partner bought me a LabBox so that I can (eventually, once I've picked up the other stuff I need like a scanner and chemistry and a leader retriever) start developing film at home. This is the first step in the road to me making this hobby a little less expensive. The rough road map once I've learned to dev is:

* Find a B+W film that I really like and am happy to make into The One That I Shoot

* Buy bulk rolls

* Learn to fill canisters

* Start...doing that? Bulk loading. Whatever people call it.

The current candidates are (probably unsurprisingly) Ilford HP5+ and Ilford Delta 400. I've only shot one roll of Delta 400 (and one 3200) so I need to spend a bit more time with it to see if I actually prefer it to HP5, but the first roll I shot was beautiful.

I didn't have any plans to learn to develop C41. I don't really have the space to store two lots of chemistry, I like that I can get monobaths for B+W development, and I'd have to spend a little more money on temperature control stuff to do C41 (because my house is very cold all year round).

So of course I've just learned about Ilford XP2 Super, a B+W film that can be developed in C41 chemistry. And that changes things a little because if it turns out I like it? Hell yeah I'm going to learn to do C41 and get the stuff I need for it, because then I can also start developing my colour rolls as well and make the hobby even cheaper while still only needing to know (and store/pay for the stuff for) one development process.

So I've got a roll of that along the way, and I'm excited to get it and see what it's like. And if I like it then that also opens the door to buying bulk rolls of Kodak Vision 500T, learning to remove the remjet layer (which actually sounds relatively straightforward, though I'd need more gear than just the LabBox in order to keep it dark), and start bulk loading that as well. Without the remjet layer it should (I think) be able to be developed in C41. That's exactly what Cinestill is, so this seems like a plausible plan if I like XP2 enough.

All of this hinges on me having enough money to get a scanner etc. though so god knows when it will happen.

I've just learned that Ars Imago recommended reducing development time when using the LabBox by about 10-15% due to constant agitation. I've definitely noticed that the rolls I've been developing myself have been a little more contrasty than expected, and I'm missing a lot of shadow detail and seeing really blown out highlights. I assumed this was due to poor metering but actually it may well be overdevelopment. Especially as I've been adjusting my dev times to account for a slightly lower temperature, a 10% difference is sometimes a difference of slightly longer than a minute.

I think this weekend I'm going to load up another roll of Shanghai GP3 100 - a film I've shot and developed successfully - and reduce the dev time just to see if I can spot any difference.

The real test, of course, would be to shoot two rolls with two identical cameras taking shots at the same time and then develop them with different times. And don't think I haven't thought about doing that - especially as I've just picked up a bottle of Bellini Euro HC developer and I'd really like to do a direct comparison between it and Ilfosol 3, which is what I've been using so far. I own two Canon EOS 500ns, and if I also owned two of the same lens for it I'd do this in a heartbeat. But I don't, so I can't.

The Howdooyoodoo head-icon somehow evolved into a full illustration for the fun of it. Based on a sketch from a few years ago.
