A aeronave transportava o relator da Lava Jato no STF Teori Zavascki, o empresário Carlos Alberto Filgueiras, dono do Hotel Emiliano, a massoterapeuta Maira Lidiane Panas Helatczuk e a mãe dela, Maria Ilda Panas, além do piloto Osmar Rodrigues, todos mortos no acidente.

It was a day full of feels pls dont read this it’s v disgusting. WORDS FROM A DEAD TIRED PSYKER
Mastermind was working late again. It was nothing new, obviously he did this often. However, this time, Psyker was with him. The berserker offered his assistance, albeit jokingly, but when the scientist looked him in the eye and agreed, Psyker was stumped. Blinking his eyes, he stared at Mastermind in awe. That was the first time he ever agreed to let him in the other’s lab, let alone actually let him help. There had to be a catch, right? “… You know I’m not good with AIs, right?” Psyker asked, raising an eyebrow and staring at Mastermind suspiciously.
To his surprise, the scientist smiled at him, “I know. I still want your help.”
Psyker was still thoroughly confused, “But… I honestly won’t be able to help you with your –“
“Can you follow directions?”
“Of course…”
“Do you listen to me?”
“Yes…?”
His smile grew, “Will you keep me company in my lab then?”
Psyker’s mouth just about dropped. It took a few seconds for the words to sink in, and even then it only served to jump start his heart. Finally, when it registered in his mind, the berserker’s face flushed bright red, and he had to turn his head in a vain attempt to save face. Not that it mattered; the tip of his ears felt as warm as his face, his embarrassment present as he nervously rubbed his neck. “I-If… that’s alright…” he mumbled, for once not caring about his obvious awkwardness or even minding the fact that he stuttered.
To make matters worse, Mastermind actually reached out and took Psyker’s hand in his. The berserker’s heart skipped a beat, and the flush he thought was fading returned tenfold. He frantically looked at Mastermind, eyes searching for some sort of “Mastermind”-esque explanation, but the scientist only smiled at him. Hand in hand, Mastermind led the way back to his lab.
The day progressed… abnormally. Mastermind was… very affectionate with the berserker, and at any given chance, he would find a way bump shoulders with him, or lean closer, sometimes hovering over the berserker, his chest meeting Psyker’s back, head resting against the other’s as he looked at what Psyker was doing. Whenever Psyker’s blush would finally fade away after each session, it would return full force in the next few moments; his heart was a jack hammer in his chest, and because the touches were so frequent with barely any time in between, Psyker could never fully recover from the previous one.
The back of Mastermind’s hand would brush against his, or his fingers would aimlessly trail over his arm – it didn’t matter how or what the scientist was doing, Psyker would bolt up, turning to stare at Mastermind with wide eyes. Every single time, Mastermind would meet his gaze, his eyes holding a certain serene, peaceful longing look, and the smile on his face was so gentle and full of love, that the berserker would quickly have to look away, head low as if trying to hide. It didn’t help when Mastermind would chuckle quietly to himself, before turning to leave the berserker to his thoughts.
That didn’t mean they didn’t get work done. Mastermind showed Psyker his years of research, and Psyker was shocked at the vast amount of knowledge the scientist had. Granted, he always knew, but he didn’t know there was so much…!
“No wonder your dynamos, Apocalypse, and even your drones, are so top-notch…” The berserker heard himself mumble, a voice unlike his own leaving his lips as he stared in pure admiration. Beside him, Mastermind beamed, obviously very proud of his findings.
“What’s mine is yours, you know.” Psyker felt his heart jump to his throat, every fiber in his body resisting the urge to turn and stare at the scientist. It didn’t matter, because soon, one of Mastermind’s hands was on his cheek, and slowly, he turned Psyker’s head to look at him. Again, he met the scientist’s gaze, seeing the same tranquil calmness that was unlike the scientist’s usually grouchy, grumpy self. Just who was this man? Did he know what he was doing to him?
Psyker was frozen on the stop, staring at Mastermind with wide, unsure eyes. The scientist held his gaze for a moment, his thumb brushing soft circles on his cheek, leaving goosebumps in its wake, before finally pulling away. Psyker watched the scientist venture off to the side, yet his eyes were unfocused, seeing the scientist yet not processing it was him. Who was he…?
Still, he reached a hand up, fingertips nimbly touching where Mastermind’s hand had been. It… felt warm, and Psyker knew it wasn’t just because of his flushed face. The scientist was being gentle, tender; he was smiling more often and even met his eyes, and the look in them… Psyker swallowed the lump in his throat, trying to calm his still fast beating heart. The berserker only broke out of his daze at the sound of his name leaving Mastermind’s lips, the scientist beckoning him over.
It lasted the whole day, much to the berserker’s surprise. No snide comment, no rude stares, no signs of irritation, no nothing… And Psyker couldn’t even bring himself to make any smartass remarks, couldn’t bring himself to tease the scientist like he did every day; he couldn’t bring himself to even want to, honestly. In fact, and it didn’t hit Psyker until late into the evening, he hadn’t felt any urge to. No “manchild” syndrome, no “musclehead” disorder, or even that bratty, jealous side of him that came out whenever Mastermind so much as mentioned Apocalypse.
“Apocalypse is my greatest invention,” Mastermind was rambling on, for the most part, staring at the AI cube with a soft smile, “He’s like a partner to me. Silly, isn’t it? For me to see an inanimate object as such, huh?” Psyker couldn’t bring himself to say a word, and Mastermind didn’t think anything of it. Instead, he chuckled again, running his fingers once over the sleeping Apocalypse’s side, before turning away from it. He walked towards Psyker, and the berserker, thinking he was attempting to get around him, quickly moved to the side.
To his surprise, the scientist stopped him, resting a hand on his arm. Wherever this man touched left an odd sensation on his skin, burning through his clothes and even reaching his heart; and it didn’t help when he continued to give Psyker a genuine, sincere smile. Seriously, what was Mastermind trying to do to him? Psyker held his breath, waiting for him to say something, but when he didn’t, the berserker breathed out.
Only to make a strange sound caught between a gasp and a dying whale when the scientist reached over and pressed his lips to his cheek. It was brief, Psyker’s skin burning and his face on fire, before the scientist pulled back, moving to return to his work. Psyker’s hands flew to his face, covering it in a vain attempt to hide his embarrassment, groaning when he felt the heat leaving his cheeks.
The berserker sneaked a peek between his fingers, staring at Mastermind’s back, but the scientist was acting like nothing happened. Shit, did he just daydream that? In fact, was he even awake? Was he dreaming? This had to be a dream, right? Where was Mastermind? Psyker couldn’t help how his back stiffened when Mastermind looked over his shoulder at him; the berserker quickly looked away, pretending to be busy looking over some of Mastermind’s equipment.
But that was the most affectionate thing Mastermind’s done all day. But oddly, it was enough. Usually Psyker pushed for more, usually he riled the scientist up, wanting more of his attention, even turning demanding. It was a wonder Mastermind kept to himself most of the time… Yet, Psyker didn’t feel as guilty as he usually did when he dwelled on those thoughts. In fact, he found himself unable to stay on them for long. He felt light, as if all the usual weight on his shoulders were gone. He felt… happy, content, peaceful. It was nice…
Despite working in silence, it was a comfortable one, and without even realizing it himself, Psyker was sharing secret glances with the scientist, sharing small smiles, and sometimes would even brush the back of his hand against the scientist’s. It was just small little things, but for some reason, it felt like they were more, that they held more meaning than anything else in the world.
At one point, Psyker caught himself drifting asleep. The light, warm feelings were like a sweet song, lulling him to sleep. Looking around, the groggy berserker realized how late into the morning it was, and was even surprised to see how much time had passed.
“Mastermind…?” Psyker could barely hear his own voice, looking around as if in a daze for the scientist. A short humming from a distance away caught his attention, and he turned his head to find the scientist working on one of his computers, looking over data and piecing together records and numbers the berserker could barely comprehend, even when awake. “It’s late… You should sleep.”
“I will,” Mastermind’s voice was a whisper, as if he talking any louder would break whatever trance the two were in, “Go ahead and turn in for the night. I’ll join you in a bit.”
If the berserker were coherent, or even able to function (let alone blush) anymore, he would have been able to understand what the words leaving his mouth were. They sounded like a jumbled mutter of words in agreement, before he dragged his stiff, tired body to the bed Mastermind had in his lab. He all but collapsed on top of it, mumbling more words that made no sense. Hell, he wasn’t even sure what he was saying anymore, all he knew was how drained he felt.
The berserker closed his eyes, falling into a state of unconscious that wasn’t quite sleep yet wasn’t exactly awake. If Psyker concentrated hard enough, he could hear the soft clicking of Mastermind’s fingers on the keyboard, indicating he was still awake. And Psyker actually frowned at that. He rolled over on the bed, noticing how spacious and even cold it felt. Did Mastermind even use this bed? It felt nothing like the one they usually shared; that one was worn down a bit, but yet it seemed so used to the duo sharing it, that it would mold perfectly with their bodies, easily dragging them to sleep.
This one was stiff, unfamiliar… and Psyker actually made a small noise between a whine and a whimper. It was cold… it felt lonely… Where was… “Mastermind...?” The berserker curled into a ball, arms hugging himself in a vain attempt to keep warm. “Mastermind…” He called again, his voice louder this time.
“Yes, Psyk?” The scientist mumbled, though loud enough for Psyker to hear. Not that it mattered; his voice resonated off the large walls of the lab, making it seem to ring in his head. Was the lab always so… immense? So isolated, and even secluded? How could Mastermind even sleep here?
“… Come to bed, Mastermind…” The tone of voice Psyker used, it sounded off even to himself, as if he were pleading. Mastermind paused in his typing and turned his head to stare in the general direction he knew the bed was, where he heard Psyker’s voice. In the back of his mind, he heard himself nag about work, about how he was almost finished, that just a few more minutes would be enough. But Mastermind knew those minutes would turn into hours, as they always did. Usually he would continue to do so, but with Psyker there…
“… Are you okay?” The scientist pushed himself away from the desk, turning his body and craning his head as if he could see the berserker any better in the otherwise dark lab. He could however make out the berserker’s silhouette on his bed, and he frowned when he saw him bundled close together, as if he were cold. From the corner of his eye and a flick of his wrist, he pulled up the temperature. 73 degrees, the average room temperature… He shouldn’t have been cold, so what was it then?
“I’m fine,” Mastermind turned his head back to the berserker, hearing the soft distress in his voice, “nevermind. Sorry to disturb you.” And he watched as Psyker rolled over so his back was to him. It took but a minute to quickly save his work and shut the computer off. Mastermind stood up and stretched, his back stiff from not moving for a long time. Still, as soon as he stood up, the scientist felt worn-out. He quickly shrugged his jacket off, resting it on his chair, before reaching for his tie.
Psyker had his eyes closed, huddled closer together as he tried to keep his thoughts at bay. He was just being overemotional, after being so sentimental all day, that’s what it was. The berserker knew this but couldn’t help it; he wanted Mastermind to join him, wanted to cuddle close to him and feel his arms around him, wanted to feel warm, safe, protected…
The berserker jumped when he felt a hand on his shoulder and the bed shift ever so slightly. He looked over his shoulder, and instantly felt his face burn bright red at the barely clothed scientist. There was a lump in his throat and Psyker couldn’t fathom why. It wasn’t the first time he’s seen Mastermind like this, so what made this time so different?
“You’re still dressed?” Mastermind asked quietly, his fingers reaching to soothe through the berserker’s hair. Psyker’s eyes screwed shut, trying to will his blush away, trying to calm his racing heart. “That’s unusual… It’s going to be hot you know, in this stuffy room.” Nimbly, the scientist’s fingers worked through the buttons of his best, pulling it apart enough for him to get to his shirt. Psyker bolted up, shuffling away from his slightly and staring at the scientist with wide eyes.
Mastermind looked surprised, but he pulled back. A hand reached for his head, running through his bangs before pulling it from its tie, letting white locks fall over his shoulder. “C’mon, Psyk... Let’s go to bed…” Psyker swallowed hard, before exhaling a shaky breath. He nodded his head, shrugging his vest off and pulling his shirt over his head. Soon, he was wearing just his boxers, Mastermind just as bare.
It was how they always slept, the berserker was trying to tell himself, not able to comprehend why he was suddenly so self-conscious. Mastermind pulled the covers back, holding it open for the other to join. It took a moment, the berserker breathing in slightly and holding his breath, still trying to calm his nerves, before finally, sinking into bed beside the scientist. Mastermind pulled the covers over them, reaching to pull the berserker close to him.
Psyker thought he wouldn’t be able to fall asleep, the day having been so different and full of new experiences. He had many thoughts to ponder on, but with Mastermind’s arm secured tightly around his waist, how the man mumbled “goodnight” and pressed a short kiss to his neck, burying his face in the other’s hair, the berserker felt oddly calm once again… especially when he felt Mastermind’s heart beating against his back, just about in sync with his own.

Dealing with Data

This fall I attended an event called “Lab Data to Machine Learning in 30 Seconds”, put on by Riffyn (@riffyn, https://riffyn.com/) and AWS, as part of the synbiobeta 2018 (@SynBioBeta) Synthetic Biology Week. It included a panel discussion lead by Riffyn’s CEO Tim Gardner and a panel of data science experts from Amyris, GSK, and Novartis (all three are listed on NASDAQ or NYSE). The focus of the panel was the rapid advance of machine learning and AI in biotech and pharmaceutical R&D; however, the discussion also ventured into other interesting areas like structuring and integration in data systems and the goals and challenges of dealing with data in the biotech industry.
In order to understand how data science had changed the directions and shaped the perspectives of the panelists, the panel explored some of the challenges that they were dealing with in their projects. Sometimes their challenges included acquiring a deeper grasp of where signals or noise came from in the data. Sometimes the challenges included strenuous efforts to 'wrangle’ and structure the data (possibly from thousands of data sources) in order to create new molecules and compounds. Most of the time, however, the challenges involved long and painful analysis of countless spreadsheets. It was also interesting to hear about the kind of goals the panelists had for the data. When data poured in quickly, the panelists wanted to find ways to motivate teams while minding timelines, and to define objectives and limits for the data gathering. Often though, the goals were centered around creating better data models (which are only as good as the data that is fed them); but there was also a longing for an easier system.
The panelists had learned a lot about working with data in their projects and about trying to automate data-related processes. For instance, sometimes the ‘secret sauce’ they were looking for was buried deep within the data, and could only be ‘discovered’ through painstaking data combing and company cross-learning. Sometimes to ensure that they had good data, they had to hire outside help. Sometimes there was excitement in joining data, which connected the scientists with the data’s impact. Other times, they had to mitigate the risk of using ‘biased’ data, since the way the data was trained could result in missed discoveries. In some cases, data that was valuable actually lived in the outliers, yet was still thrown away. Sifting through ‘garbage’ data had to be done in a large-scale automated way so that biased decisions would not be relied on.
They also talked in depth about the aspect of private data (known as “dark data”), which is the data that companies keep to themselves. But how can incentive be increased for companies to start to bring the different sources of data together? There was no simple answer for this! There is usually a lot of mistrust inside of the organizations themselves, and often, the data is not easily available or sharable, hidden away in numerous SharePoint drives and Excel sheets. Most of the time, there is simply too much ego and territoriality attached to the data to allow the data to be accessible by everyone. The scientists working on the data are not cross-training enough or learning about each others’ processes. The culture of sharing data and cross-company involvement definitely needs to change and it usually starts at the top of the organizations. One big thing that could help this happen faster is the development of standards for the data sharing process itself. Such standards have often driven industries to the next level by making it easier for different companies and products to work together; however, standards take a long time to develop because they require companies to ‘opt-in’ to them first.
In tuning into this panel, I also found that there was a genuine enjoyment from the panelists in working with data, especially when it led to discoveries. They even had names for themselves like “data detective” and “molecule artist”. When all of their data could be used, it was very gratifying, as was the ability to navigate the space of billions of predictions in their models. When their work lead to a big landmark finding, it was all worth it! After all, isn’t science all about making discoveries?
