The January 2020 Episode of Wally Life is now on YouTube! Happy New Year and welcome to the next decade of Wally Life!  In January, we look at outdoor activities in the Pocono Mountains.  American Bald Eagle watching is a fun activity for the entire family.  In January and February, large numbers of eagles can be found along the Upper Delaware River and the Eagle Institute in Lackawaxen provides educational programs, eagle watching trips, and self guided tours of eagle nesting locations.  Many of the photos and video footage in this episode were shot around Lackawaxen.  We also take a look at the history of the Paupack Plunge, which has raised over $52,000 for the Tafton and Ledgedale Dive Teams over the last 8 years with over 1200 people taking the plunge.  The Paupack Plunge sponsored by the Lighthouse Harbor Marina is taking a break this year, but plans to return in 2021.  But don't worry, there will be a Paupack Polar Plunge this year to raise money for the dive teams hosted at 1st Klas Marina on Lake Wallenpaupack taking place on February 15th, 2020. One of the industries providing the energy needed for the American Industrial Revolution was the anthracite coal industry and the Gravity Railroad was an important part of getting that fuel to the industrial centers.  In this episode, we learn about the history of the gravity railroad.  Then join us for a trek over to Shohola Falls for an extreme winter sport, creek boating.  And don't miss the 2020 Wally Ice Fest with the Pond Hockey Tournament and curling demonstrations taking place at Camp Watonka Outdoor Recreational Center in Hawley on February 8th and 9th. Thank you for watching!  Share with your friends, PLEASE subscribe to our channel, like this video, and we welcome your comments on the show.  Please share with your friends! #wallylifetv #poconos #poconomountains #pondhockey https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kEGQH9A9ATs&t=1007s

Video shows hunters rescuing stranded deer from frozen lake
LACKAWAXEN TOWNSHIP, Pa. – Hunters across the country  have plenty of stories about the deer they shot or the ones that got away, but a few hunters had the chance to save an eight-point buck from a frozen lake, and it was all caught on camera.
You may not be able to hear it in the video from Saturday at Greeley Lake near Hawley, but you can certainly see the struggle the eight-point buck was having on the ice.
Photographer Jeff Sidle had his lens trained on the animal and shared the video.
youtube
“He must have made it out that far, slipped and fell, and couldn’t get back up,” said rescuer Josh Davis.
Josh Davis and Ed Schmalzle wondered what they could do about the stranded buck. The deer was far out there, and the ice was thin.
“I wouldn’t want to see the deer suffer,” Davis said. “I am a hunter. There’s a giant difference between an animal being harvested humanely and one being left out to die on the frozen ice.”
No one was really sure how long that buck was out on Greeley Lake on Saturday. They ran over to a nearby camp and grabbed a boat to start the rescue effort, an effort that took a lot of time and a lot of care.
“Even with the boat distributing my weight, the boat was still cracking the ice up,” Davis recalled.
The video shows Davis approach the buck, lasso him, and bring him back to shore before the animal ran off.
“If it wasn’t for him, the deer might have been laying out there yet,” said rescuer Ed Schmalzle.
There’s still some rope along the lakeshore from the rescue and a sense that these hunters did what they could to help a helpless creature.
“If someone did happen to get him on Monday, that’s feeding a family as opposed to him sitting out there going to waste,” Davis added.
“People don’t realize that just because hunters go out and kill that they’re not humane or they don’t have those feelings about animals and the environment. That’s the way we are. It captured who we are,” added photographer Jeff Sidle.
