Deadnettle (lamium amplexicaule) an introduced species, known as common henbit, or greater henbit, is a species of Lamium native to Europe, Asia and northern Africa. Referred to as deadnettle, because it looks a bit like stinging nettles but doesn’t have the sting, deadnettle is also known as stingless nettle. This pretty little weed pops up in undisturbed shady damp spots as well as the shaded back lawn. Some sources say deadnettle can cause “staggers” if grazed by livestock while others say it’s an edible weed. Pretty cloudy here at the beach today and I had issues with my camera. If you know me you’ve heard me talk about being cursed when it comes to astrological events…today was no different 🤣 The orange sides is from a pic I got of the sun through my glasses. On the bright side I shared my glasses with a man and he was very excited to have gotten to see it for the few seconds that he did.

Henbit has a slightly sweet and peppery flavor, similar to celery. Henbit dead-nettle - its common name - is probably native to the Mediterranean region but has since spread around the world. It is found growing in open areas, gardens, fields and meadows. It propagates freely by seed, where it becomes a key part of a meadow ecosystem. Sometimes entire fields will be reddish-purple with its flowers before spring ploughing. Where common, it is an important nectar and pollen plant for bees, especially honeybees, where it helps start the spring build up. This plant flowers very early in the spring even in northern areas, and for most of the winter and the early spring in warmer locations such as the Mediterranean region.
