The Valley Railway Historic District is a historic district partially located in the Cuyahoga Valley National Park, extending from Rockside Rd. in Independence, Ohio, to Howard St. in Akron, Ohio.   The Valley Railway was constructed in 1880 to link Cleveland's growing steel industry and the rich coal fields of the Tuscarawas River Valley, extending south to Zoarville. Although the first railroad came to Cleveland in 1854, the majority of the rail lines ran east–west and did not connect the metropolitan and industrial centers of Cleveland, Akron and Canton. The Valley Railway was built next to, and sometimes on top of, the Ohio and Erie Canal. The Railway provided a faster transport for the coal needed to fuel the new industrial economy.

     Although the railway primarily functioned as an industrial and freight carrier, the railway published "The Travelers and Tourists Guide to the Valley Railway!" to promote its passenger service. This guidebook describes the origins and character of many towns and notable natural features along the route. The Valley Railway brought an increase in noise and pollution to the quiet rural valley. The guidebook was a common promotional piece used to make the railway seem more recreational than industrial. Many believed that the presence of the railroad in pastoral landscapes all around the country, referred to as the "machine in the garden," represented a significant shift away from an agrarian society towards an industrial one.

     In 1895 the Valley Railway became the Cleveland, Terminal and Valley Railway. In 1915 the line was absorbed into the Baltimore and Ohio system. Although many small independent lines from this era were absorbed into larger lines and acquired parallel tracks, the Valley Railway retains single track alignment and has been well preserved. A great deal of the track runs through the Cuyahoga Valley National Park, which has preserved the cultural landscape of the valley and prevented modern intrusions into it. Today the Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad runs excursion service extending from Cuyahoga County to Canton.  It was added to the National Register of Historic Places on May 17, 1985.

Jeannie Lee Riggins, 70, entered into the joy of her salvation on Sunday evening, June 5, 2022, while in the comfort of her home surrounded by the love and warm embraces of her family. Now released from the bonds of Multiple Sclerosis that encumbered her for 25 years, she is completely healed and no longer in pain.

Born in Buncombe County on February 23, 1952, Jeannie was the daughter of the late Foy and Henry C. Riggins. A devoted member of the First Pentecostal Holiness Church, she attended regularly and participated in the ministries of the church as long as her health allowed.

After graduating with a Bachelor's degree from Bob Jones University, Jeannie went on to attain her Master's degree from Winthrop University and completed a successful career teaching in several Christian and public schools throughout North Carolina and South Carolina. Following her teaching career, she served as a supervisor for Wendy's in Forest City, North Carolina.

Skilled as a needle crafter and uniquely gifted as an artist, Jeannie enjoyed the chance to paint beautiful landscape scenes and create many needlepoint items. Many friends and family members are beneficiaries of Jeannie's talents, for she loved to share her artwork with those whom she loved.

The thrill of travel was one of Jeannie's favorite pastimes as she enjoyed the many beautiful sights of God's creation. Precious Moments figurines were among Jeannie's prized possessions, and she most enjoyed her trip to Carthage, Missouri to visit the Precious Moments Chapel.

The family will receive friends at Seymour Funeral Home on Thursday, June 9, 2022 from 6:00 – 7:00 p.m. followed by a service to celebrate Jeannie's life at 7:00 p.m. with Pastor John Howard officiating. Interment will be at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, June 10, 2022, in Evergreen Memorial Cemetery with Pastor Bill Rose officiating.

Jeannie is survived by her loving sister and brother-in-law, Susan and Bob Joyner: nephew, Jeff Joyner and wife, Vicki; niece, Stephanie Joyner; and great nephew and niece, Graham Joyner and Brooke Joyner. She is also survived by Bob's sister, Mary Dell Joyner.

The family wishes to extend their deepest appreciation to the many aids, caregivers, friends, and neighbors who cared for Jeannie throughout the years. Though she will be dearly missed, she forever holds a place in our hearts.

An American way of the cross

MIDDLESBORO, Ky. -- Harrison Mayes was God's own messenger.

He was a rolling holy man, rambling the landscape, landing in small illuminating bursts. Everywhere he traveled, Mayes left behind a trail of large cement crosses and hearts and red and white signs that read "Get Right With God," or "Jesus Is Coming Soon."

Mayes was absolutely convinced he was right, and his pilgrimage is probably the last thing you would expect from a skinny Kentucky coal miner whose nickname was "High Weed."

But from the 1930s until he died in 1986 at age 88, Harrison was a man who ran on a tank of religious energy that was always full. He was a hot-footing apostle and a fast-digging man.

Mayes was born on a farm in Claiborne County near Goins in 1898. His family moved to Fork Ridge, a community of wood frame houses on stilts that was part of a series of coal mining camp towns near Middlesboro, Ky. By the time of his 15th birthday, Harrison was working in the mines alongside his father.

When he was about 18 years old, he was practically crushed to death by a runaway coal car. Working in the deep mine as a coupler, Harrison was slammed against the side of the mine wall by a fully-loaded car when it broke loose from the line. He suffered several broken bones and his chest was smashed.

The night of the accident, Harrison Mayes danced a two-step with death, but by the next morning, he was awake and praying, asking the Lord to save him. He promised that if he were allowed to live, he would dedicate his life to working for the Lord.

God got a good deal on that one.

After recovering, Harrison Mayes never considered not living up to his end of the bargain. He and God shook hands.

As soon as he healed, he tried preaching. Failing to arouse passions, he next attempted to become a gospel singer. With an off key voice that raised hair instead of a joyful noise, he abandoned the hymnal and began painting signs on anything that would stand still, and some things that wouldn't.

His very first sign was on both sides of the family's free-ranging pig. It said: "Sin Not."

He made wooden crosses, and then, like an evangelical Johnny Appleseed, he planted them across the Southeast.

Sometime around 1940, Mayes latched on to the idea of casting cement. He built a wooden mold and began pouring.

The mold was in the form of a heart, 4 feet tall and 4 feet wide. The post supporting the heart was 6 feet high and 10 inches wide. Three additional feet were buried in the ground, making the one-piece heart 13 feet tall.

That first sign is still standing in the cemetery at Fork Ridge where Harrison Mayes' father and mother, brother and sister are buried on a stark hillside. In the near distance, where trees grow unfettered in thick bunches, are memories of hundreds of coal camp houses jammed into the hills.

Harrison cut his biblical messages into the molds. One side said: "Prepare to Meet God." The other side proclaimed: "Jesus Is Coming Soon." Rarely did he change the message on the hearts or the crosses and his signs mostly read: "Get Right With God."

Harrison continued to work in the mines while casting crosses and hearts and painting signs. Then, after casting his first concrete cross mold, he decided to broaden his sphere of activity: he began planting his hearts and crosses around the nation.

The cement crosses were just as large as the hearts and weighed 1,400 pounds each. He painted their messages in red, so they would be visible from long distances. Over time, his crosses changed from four inches to eight inches thick. He transported four crosses at a time on a flatbed truck.

Arriving at a chosen site with a hired driver, he would dig a hole and back the truck to its edge. He unloaded the crosses by pushing them across a row of pipes. Then he would slide the cross into the hole and back the truck slowly toward the hole until the big cross dropped into place. Later, Harrison developed a block and tackle arrangement to handle the heavier monuments.

He repeated this process thousands of times across the nation, missing very few states. Before advanced age stopped his traveling plant-as-you-go mission, Harrison had erected crosses, hearts and signs in some 44 states.

He left instructions which states where the rest of his crosses and signs were to go if he died before finishing the work he had promised God he would do.

He also mapped a plan to put crosses on the moon and other planets. He envisioned big cement crosses in Egypt and Jerusalem as well. As Harrison Mayes widened his horizon of influence, he also began signing his name in a strange code -- P.A.E. He revealed the meaning only to two granddaughters.

After his death, one granddaughter recalled the initials were his religious shorthand for Planetary Aviation Evangelism.

He fully intended to go out of this world.

Harrison Mayes didn't stop with crosses and signs, though. They were his signature, but there was much more to the man.

He created a large sign with an arrow pointing toward the skies and fastened it to his bicycle, which he rode everywhere, since he didn't have a driver's license or own a car.

Mayes collected bottles of all description -- plastic and glass -- in which he stuck religious messages. He floated them in streams across the land. Some estimate that he sent some 50,000 bottles downstream.

Until warned not to, he scribbled on the sides of railroad cars.

He tacked large letter signs to wire fences along airport runways.

He built his home in Middlesboro in the distinct shape of a cross.

On the roof of his house, he painted 12-foot-high words in red. The message, "Jesus Saves," could be read by those flying overhead in airplanes.

The house was built with heart-shaped slab porches in three corners of the cross. Go out the fourth door where there was no porch and you were lost, physically as well as spiritually, he said.

Small 6-inch crosses were etched into each of the house's handmade cement blocks, which he also cast.

Five cross-shaped double windows represented the 10 commandments, and its 12 single windows were symbolic of the 12 apostles. "Jesus Saves" was carved into the headers above the windows. Eight outside doors were for the eight people saved on the ark.

Mayes' son, Clyde, who lives in Middlesboro, grew up in the cross-shaped home and has at age 61 become interested in his father's work.

He says his father was somewhat extreme, but also dedicated to religious thought and freedom. And to spreading the word.

In order to fund his work, the elder Mayes worked double shifts in the coal mine, sometimes spending the night in the mine. He became so adept at painting signs that the Coca-Cola Co. hired him to paint the company's signs they gave away to country stores.

"He was always working," says Clyde. "I never met a man who could measure up to him. I'm still learning about the man."

Harrison never sought donations for his work, but miners had the mine company set aside $1 from their pay to be put in a fund for Harrison and his signs. Some churches donated, as did some Middlesboro businessmen.

Of that time, Clyde recalls that his family -- mother, two sisters and brother -- felt somewhat deprived. If Harrison had $6, he gave the family $3. The other half went for his crosses and signs.

"My mother, Mary Lillie, was a midwife in Fork Ridge. She had the healing power. She was a church-going person. He was a highway person.

"We had all we needed," Clyde says of his father, "but I didn't appreciate what he was doing. I thought of him as a little way out. I guess I was a little embarrassed by what he did.

"I was fascinated with him, but I didn't always agree with my father.

"But he was dedicated."

Clyde, a mechanic and carpenter, and his wife, Catherine, are attempting to document the crosses that are still standing. They have found about 20 crosses and hearts that still stand where Mayes erected them.

Many were torn down when interstate highways moved through an area. Others fell into disrepair when roads changed with progress.

Some of Mayes' crosses even made it to Wyoming, Clyde says. Some are in Colorado.

"He didn't ask permission to put up his crosses and signs," says Clyde. "He usually put them along fence rows so they wouldn't bother the farmer or the road. He called that no-man's land.

"He also put a sign on his crosses saying that if they were torn down, that would be between the person tearing down the cross and God. If you wanted to go to hell, that was your own fault.

"He once put a cross on a golf course," says Clyde.

Harrison Mayes didn't believe in belonging to one church. He felt he was a member of God's own church. He was non-denominational and never hesitated to attend any church of any denomination, including Catholic, black and Jewish synagogues.

After all, Harrison Mayes was God's own messenger. The way he figured it, he would fit in just about anywhere.

I receive, daily, the internationally informative photography news site

The Eye of Photography from the former editor-in-chief of French Photo Magazine and now editor-in-chief of The Eye of Photography, Jean-Jacques Naudet. This daily posting is phenomenally valuable, covering all sorts of photography events, portfolios of photographers throughout the world, gallery shows, museum exhibitions, etc.  

The site is free, though as an aside they can use financial help for their service. Apart from having contributed features from time to time, I have no affiliation with them, I’m only interested in seeing the on-going success of something that publishes so much information and imagery every day.

Other important sources include AtEdge and Graphis.

Each of these open up to a wide world of brilliant photographers, designers, and other creatives.

A recent post contained an article about the The Yancy Richardson Gallery in New York City. The images of Andrew Moore who is represented by the gallery particularly caught my eye. I went to his site ((http://www.andrewlmoore.com)) and was so moved by his body of work that I bought his recent book, "Dirt Meridian.”

I do that, buy and collect photography books. Along with the internet, books are my major source of self-education. I am well aware that if I am to grow in this visual art, it’s imperative that I study, continually, tenaciously. It’s essential to gain, maintain and expand a vast visual data bank if one desires to create unique, original and exciting work. For photography, one needs to look, study, and look even more, reviewing and surveying everything available in galleries, web sites, periodicals, museums, presentations and, yes, books. Our brains are such that images drop out; constant replenishment is needed for any sort of positive development, success, and even survival in this challenging art. It’s essential to recognize what’s been done before in order to avoid repetition. Knowing what hasn’t been done, or done well enough, comes when one has seen – and keeps seeing -- a vast range of imagery.

When “Dirt Meridian” arrived, I opened it and couldn’t put it down, studying every image.  And, as I always do with a new book of photographs, I left it out, opened, on a counter I pass daily, so that I could look at it again and again and imprint the images in my memory.

This is not the kind of photography I endeavor to create in the controlled environment of a studio (or a pool, my particular kind of  studio).  Moore’s work is done outdoors, in this case in the vast, almost empty space of the great plains of middle America. What he shows us are sand hills and sky and weather and cattle.  And the Badlands and old abandoned barns and buffalo and meadows and creeks, windmills and wildlife. He also shows the determined struggle of the human spirit against the toughest elements, and the effect of those on deserted homesteads.

America, its 100th meridian.

Moore’s epic visions of the vast treeless space in the 100th meridian, cutting through North and South Dakota, Nebraska, Kansas, Oklahoma, and Texas, are all about space -- empty sprawling and seemingly infinite space. The images are intoxicating, filled with magnificent beauty in the loneliness that is the trackless expanse of seemingly endless land. From his Acknowledgement: “…the land’s beauty lies in its vast and sublime emptiness."

I wrote to Moore and learned, happily, that his NYC studio/office is located only a few blocks from mine. So, I invited him for lunch and an in-person review of his magnificent photographs.

Working on this book project, he spent weeks at a time on many trips from the East, met many individuals and recorded their stories, histories, lives. Each photograph is accompanied by text containing fascinating information which provides a rich understanding of the work.

Moore made many of the photographs from a Cessna 180 single-engine plane flown by Doug Dean. They attached his medium format digital camera to one of the plane’s wing struts, using a screen and remote control from the passenger seat.

They flew low, yielding a unique perspective. This technique is one important reason why the images look so different from photographs of this area I’ve seen before. He spoke of the emptiness as a spiritual reservoir, a spiritual landscape.  He wrote in the Acknowledgements, “the intimate seemed conjoined to the infinite."

During the project he moved from north to south, contrasting open spaces with cluttered, claustrophobic interiors, rich with poor, immigrants and native born, industrial scenes with mythic landscapes, all of which he explained was a metaphor for the sense of possibility, of hope that tomorrow will be a better day.

In the book his pilot wrote, “I hope you take pause, if only for a moment, to consider the story of this land, where second chances are few, and how the decisions we make today will impact the generations to follow."

From the book: “Sheridan County, Nebraska. These dry, fallow lands and terraces lie to the southeast of Clinton. The wind coming out of the north was blowing at over 70 mph. When choosing the angle approach to a subject, Doug Dean piloted us, if possible, into a headwind, since that slowed the plane down and allowed a bit more time for picture making. On this day we had little choice but to let a powerful tailwind take us on a Nantucket sleigh ride if we wanted to catch this billowing cloud of white dirt."

They not only raise both cattle and sheep but they also farm soybeans and sugar beets.   Heidi is a sixth generation descendant of Jules Sandoz, among the earliest homesteaders in the area. Better known as ‘Old Jules,’ legendary for his cussedness and his justly famous tenacity, he was immortalized in the biography of the same name written in 1935 by daughter Mari Sandoz.”

From the book: "Cherry County, Nebraska, 2013. Cattle and heron share a drink at the tank in the residual morning fog. Much of the success of cattle ranching in the Sandhills is due to the shallow reach down to the Ogallala Aquifer. In some places it's only six feet to water, so one can easily and cheaply put down a windmill in order to water livestock anywhere in the vastness of this terrain. (There are many sub-irrigated meadows that provide hay at the driest times.) The hilly landscape provides the herd with protection from the wind and snow. However, the quality of the grass is not as good as on hard soil land, so it can still take 20 to 30 acres to support just one cow/calf pair."

From the book: “McKenzie County, North Dakota, 2005.   Branding day at the Hepper Ranch outside the town of Keene. In the shadows of the Blue Buttes, amidst lush May grass, family, friends, and neighbors (and several dogs) help round up this herd of 300 cow/calf pairs. The large crew included five heelers, six sets of floppers, branders, vaccinators, and iron tenders. The older more experienced cowboys do the actual branding while the younger folks who wrestle the calves are known as floppers.”

In the book’s introduction, Kent Haruf wrote, “These are wonderful photographs, clear, and evocative, unsentimental, they seem to understand the sacredness of the country. They suggest its holiness."

Considerations For Downsizing

  Recently at a party, I had the pleasure of chatting with a good friend whom I wish I could see more often. He mentioned that he plans to move from Virginia to Maryland; primarily to be closer to the family. The move also aims to downsize to a smaller home than his current residence.   He currently lives in a large single family home in Loudoun County, one of the top 10 best counties to live in the United States. He’d like to move into Howard County, also one of the top 10 best counties to live in the United States. Even though he plans to downsize, he’s finding that home prices in Howard County are generally more expensive than Loudon County. So what gives?   Well, there is a huge supply in Loudoun County as compared with Howard County. Many parts of the county have been developed recently, that is over the past 20 years, whereas Howard County, you could say is more of at a maturity stage and land for sale or building is scarce.   We all know the laws of supply and demand.  I like the way Investopedia breaks it down: “the correlation between price and how much of a good or service is supplied to the market is known as the supply relationship. Price, therefore, is a reflection of supply and demand.”   Since Howard County is more in demand because the supply is low, the prices are higher, especially in certain sub-sections. This presents a challenge and thus a consideration, yes, in downsizing.    

Downsizing Itself Is Almost A Slam Dunk

  The major expenses we incur month in and month out are usually housing, transportation, and food. Housing is number In fact-fact, according to the Bureau of Labor and Statistics, housing costs account for over 33% of annual average expenditures. More so, for low-income families, housing costs account for over 40% of their income!  

    Needless to say, if you ’re starting the exercise to try and cut cost, the first place to look is the housing expense line.    

Downsizing Is About Location Location Location

  If you plan to downsize, your destination location is a big consideration. A 2,000 square foot home in a rural area could be the same or even less than a 600 square foot apartment in the heart of a major city like Manhattan. Property Management, Inc. notes that a two-bedroom apartment in NYC is almost $3,500. I have double the rooms and my mortgage is just a bit over half of this amount.   It’s important to find the right balance between exchanging for lesser square footage with stuff to fill it with and more inconvenience, free time, and cash in your pocket.   Sometimes people will downsize just 15-20 minutes away to stay close to the places and people they regularly like to visit. If you live in a busy suburb, this is a great option which provides lots of flexibility. That 15-20 minute difference in location could amount to a difference of a hundred thousand dollars or more in savings.  But it can go either way; I can leave my home and drive 15-20 minutes in two different directions and see significant price increases and decreases for the same square footage of space.    

Reasons To Downsize

  It’s important to understand the reasons for downsizing. Putting together a framework and calculating out the savings in time and money can propel you to move forward with excitement and eagerness. The reasons for downsizing could be one or more of the following:   Reduce mortgage/rent payment Reduce property tax Reduce utility bills Reduce clutter/items in your home Reduce home maintenance (e.g., mowing the lawn and other yard work, home cleaning, repairs and basic upkeep) Get rid of your car(s)(elimination of gas, car insurance, registration and even car payments if you have them) and walk everywhere   And here are some out-of-the-box reasons for downsizing which should be considered:   You may become healthier. You may have an excuse to get out of a smaller home and enjoy the outdoors more. You may develop a hobby of biking or hiking at local parks and trails.   You may find yourself with no reason to have to go to a store and buy stuff for your home. A lot of times when we see an empty space in our home, we feel the need to fill it with something, anything. With a smaller home, it’s more about function and convenience. You come to realize that you don’t really need or even want extra decorative stuff that just stands or sits or hangs.   You may become more social. When you downsize, especially to a condo building, chances are you’ll run into the same people over and over again. This can be used as an opportunity to build relationships with your neighbors. We’re a social being and part of us needs that. Use your smaller home as leverage to widen your network of friends.   When you have an idea of what you hope to accomplish, you can basically work backward. You can take those reasons as a checklist and use them as your criteria to find the right property to accomplish your downsizing goal.  And don’t forget that a reduction in costs can lead to opportunities for savings and investment. It may even help you retire years earlier!    

Don’t Let A Downsize Of Space Lead To Upsize Fees

  If you downsize to a condo or apartment complex, there could be fees associated with the maintenance that is performed by the property management folks.   Within the upscale towns of Montgomery County Maryland, for example, condo fees could range from $500 to over $1,000 per month and are even more in Washington DC. So in a way, you could end up right back where you started, except this time with the lesser square footage.   Condo fees generally cover the maintenance of the condo building itself and exterior landscaping along with the use of facilities within the condo such as a gym. It’s important to consider the condo fees and if these resources, such as a gym are already available to you, let’s say at your workplace.   Downsizing is a big change in lifestyle and in personal finance. It’s important to take your time and consider all the financial and non-financial factors at play so that you can make an informed decision with support to back it up.     Your Thoughts: Do you have plans to downsize in the future?
