Your EDM wouldn’t exist without these pioneers. Chicago DJ and producer; Frankie Knuckles, also known as the ‘GODFATHER OF HOUSE MUSIC’, singlehandedly created the genre. The “original” name for House Music was actually “Warehouse Music”. Why? Because Knuckles DJ’d at a club called The Warehouse. Other pioneers such as Ron Hardy and Larry Levan, continued to usher in this sound in their own special way. Together they created an everlasting legacy of a musical genre that’s made everyone dance around the world. These gay black men deserve their recognition. Across white and black communities, gay black men are often silenced. Gay clubs were a place of seeking refugee. They were an escape. For legends such as Knuckles, Hardy, and Levan, these clubs served as a muse. They created sounds that they wanted people to dance to. And yes, we’re still dancing. It is imperative that we give flowers where they are due. It is also imperative that we celebrate these men for who they are; BLACK AND GAY. Their sexuality was just as important as their race. Why? Because with being gay, discrimination came along with that (across all communities— especially black). With being black, racism was knocking at the front door. This discrimination made it impossible to find a safe space within internal AND external communities. So what did these men do? THEY CREATED THEIR SAFE SPACE AND MADE ART INSIDE OF IT. In this video, we visit many independently-owned shops in Bushwick, Brooklyn including a polaroid and film camera studio, a vinyl record store, a popular pizzeria restaurant and a coffee shop.

We start the day with a visit to the Harrison Place artist loft of Brooklyn Film Camera, which specializes in selling refurbished vintage Polaroid and film cameras. We then visit and go crate digging at Superior Elevation Records on White Street, which sells disco, soul, house, funk, jazz, reggae and international vinyl records in a cool basement space.

We then walk around some streets of Bushwick, looking at graffiti and street art before heading to Roberta's, a popular pizzeria, bakery and restaurant with an outdoor garden and tiki bar on Moore Street. Roberta's, which is housed in a sprawling former warehouse complex, is known for its imaginative pizzas that are made in wood-fired ovens. We get a delicious pizza from their take away and dine with our dog Hudson in their outdoor garden.

After having our Margherita pie, we check in with graffiti artist friends, Spot KMS and Binho, and watch them as they paint a wall on the street. We also visit with another NYC graffiti artist, Yes1, who speaks with us and shows us another great warehouse spot with lots of graffiti art.

We end the day with a visit to Swallow Cafe on Bogart Street, where we get a coffee and espresso to invigorate ourselves before heading back home to the East Village of Manhattan with our dog Hudson, who makes a new friend along the way.
