One of the most refreshing features of a new music scene is that there is plenty of sound/style explorations, at least in the beginning. Here’s proof of it in a 1997 flyer. This is from a show organized by Gonzalo who was commonly knows as “El Gótico” and the twins (I forgot their names). The gig at Las Pampas in South Gate featured Los Olvidados and Chencha Berrinches, two ska bands (which surely brought most of the crowd), one dark-punk outfit in La Mortal from Orange County and the now mythical Staura frim Tijuana. Staura was yes, a female fronted band as the flyer states. But most significantly Staura was an indie-noise band from Tijuana that is credited with igniting the indie scene in mid 1990s Tijuana. The members of Staura were Gaby Spica, René Soberanis (better known as Loopdrop, another key band in the indie TJ scene), and Omar Foglio. Foglio edited zines and launched the indie Swenga Fest 1995, which ushered a whole generation of indie bands and projects for years to come. These days Foglio is a consummate media and documentary maker with Dignicraft, a company that has released poignant docs such as “Brilliant Soil”, that focuses Michoacan artesanos and currently Dignicraft is working on a doc on the Haitian refugees in TJ. Hence, gatherings like these at some restaurant in South Gate show how youth have connected and exchanged ideas across borders in the past and present, and surely in the future too.
