On the beauty of having your life messed up

So, as I’ve mentioned, today - April 1st - is sort of a big day for me.

I swear this is not a joke. It’s going to be a post about having your life wrecked and getting back on your feet. Which means is gonna be a little sad before it gets better, but I encourage you to keep on reading.

Basically, this post begins a year ago.

On April 1st, 2019 I was urgently hospitalized after a little more than a month of ongoing back problems. The TLDR version of this is that I had being amazingly misdiagnosed and for this exact reason I come this close - please, imagine my hands gesturing here - to dying because of a pulmonary embolism at 26 years old. My life, as I had planned it to that moment, was abruptly put on hold until I could get better. All the plans, all the goals I had for the future, had to wait. It wasn’t something I could control, in fact, I could nothing about it. I just had to wait until I could resume from where I had to stop.

During both February and March, I experienced a lot of painful backaches of every sort. The kind the left you winded when you tried laughing and didn’t let you walk normally. The thing started when one Sunday afternoon I felt an incredible pain starting from my legs to my lower back as I put on my jeans and suddenly I wasn’t able to stand on my feet. I panicked, called my boyfriend downstairs crying in pain. Every movement, every intake of air was painful. He took me into the ER of the hospital near him (we live like 40 kms apart, so it wasn’t even close to my home). There I got diagnosed with a simple backache and even though it was so painful I could barely stand on my own they sent me home with prescriptions for anti-inflammatory and anti-dolorifics injections.

I got home, rested, did the injections - that gave me awful hard bumps under my skin that lasted forever (it took almost a year for them to disappear) - and a little less than two weeks after I was at my family doctor’s office to get checked for a back ache once again. This time, it was a little bit higher. Let’s say, right below the last ribs of the ribcage. I repeated the treatment. Got better. Got worse once again.

The morning of April 1st, I was fed up with all of that and the only thing I wanted was to be okay. So I woke up, washed, and went to my doctor which is a 10 min of walk from my flat. When i got there I was winded, tired as if I had run the Boston Marathon with no preparation - I hate running, so it’s not that difficult to imagine - and I was the colour of a washed out rag.

My doctor wasn’t there, but given my condition, another kind doctor visited me and promptly suggested I get checked at the hospital. I couldn’t breath properly and driving in that state wasn’t an option. I called my mum and as she panicked without me noticing, she took me to the ER. They visited me, checked me inside out - I discovered the joys of knowing how weird a tomography with contrast method feels like - and after that a very burly nurse told me candidly: “So, how many days are you gonna be with us?” In quick succession I got: an IV, multiple injections of eparine, a bed in the ER, and I was stripped and washed like a baby by a guy that was probably the same age as myself. It was the most embarrassing experience and I desperately begged to let me wash by myself, let me go to the toilet by myself. When I was told that for no reason I was to get up from the bed because otherwise I could jostle a serious clot of blood in my lungs, that’s the moment I was told I’d probably come this close to dying. I felt like a ticking time bomb, and not in the sexy sense.

The next 8 days went like that. I was moved to the ward, checked and washed and fed. Rinse and repeat.

I actually have to thank all the nurses, doctors and people that helped me in those days and treated me like a human being and not just a patient. They saved my life and made me still feel like a person, despite all the things I couldn’t suddenly do.

When I got discharged from the hospital, I thought I’d recover quickly. I’m young, I kept telling myself, A few weeks and I’ll be okay. Wrong. It took me two weeks before I was able to get a shower all by myself. It took me three months before I could walk more than ten minutes without being out of breath.

I still can’t do more than a flight of stairs without feeling winded and let’s not talk about other movements beside walking. I’ll start physical rehabilitation as soon as the shutdown in Italy for COVID-19 will be lifted, hopefully just a few weeks more of waiting.

But I got better. I will get better. During this year, I’ve learned a few useful things and I wanna share my newfound, very personal, knowledge with you all.

- Positivity is the key

You gotta be positive. If you are in a bad situation, no matter what it is, looking at it from a dark point of view will not help you at all. I spent weeks getting frustrated over all the things I couldn’t do, without considering the fact that I was up and out of bed alone was a great conquest by itself. I shouldn’t have been able to walk and breath, and yet there I was!

That of course doesn’t mean you should be happy for everything and anything, just... appreciate what you can do, instead of what you can not. It isn’t a given most of the time. Think “At least I can do this” instead of “I can’t do anything at all”. For me, what I could do was breathing, being alive and still seeing my loved ones. Sometimes, the thing you can do can be as basic as those.

- Accept the fact that there will be drawbacks

Of course, there’s no way one can have a positive mindset 24/7. There are moments when you feel down, when you feel like nothing goes the right way. For me it was frustration and powerlessness. I was in a state in which I couldn’t do any normal thing a 26 year old can, nor I could change my situation. I simply had to wait for the meds to do their job and just recover. Slowly. There’s nothing you can do about situation like these. For me it was recovering, but it can be whatever in your life. Not everything will go the way you want to, and some times there’s nothing you can do about it. You just have to accept the fact that some times you’ll be powerless. Worrying and stressing about it won’t help at all. You just have to wait it out. It’s just one bump along the road, not the thing that will stop you from getting wherever you want.

- Choose your fight wisely You can’t fight every battle. Some days you have to choose. If you were preparing yourself for something big and for whatever reason (i.e.: overwhelming, no strength, no attention etc.) you don’t have the energies right now, divide your big task in smaller tasks. For me, it meant at first choosing between getting a shower and cooking for myself. One big task a day. It’s like fighting a great opponent. First, you have to fight all the minions, build up your stamina, update your weapons, learn new moves. Only then, you can attempt fighting the big boss. With time, I was able to build up my strength and weapons to fight multiple opponents at once.

- Do not give up

If this is just a bump in the road, do not give up. Do not wallow in despair (point 1, positivity), do not abandon your goals because right now you can’t pursue them. There’s surely something you can do to work toward them, even if you can’t work as you might have wanted to for them right now. It will take longer, but you’ll get there. Just... don’t give up. Because, all the work you’ve done before won’t be useless because you can’t do what you planned now. You’ll just have to wait a little more, and in the meantime, you can try working through some smaller goals. In the end, this time spent on something else, will come in handy.

And that’s it! It’s probably nothing special, but that’s what I learned this year. I went through a lot, and I’ll still have more fight in front of myself, but keeping this mindset helped and hopefully it could help some of you too.

 The next morning seemed like any other winter morning in Toronto. Frost forming on the windows from the dropping temperatures, the sound of early morning traffic on the streets below, and the alarm blaring its usual tone. Except, something’s different. Wrong.

 “I love you Zachy.”

 “I love you too Willy.”

 They kissed and held each other closely under the covers, beginning to fall asleep.

 The next morning seemed like any other winter morning in Toronto. Frost forming on the windows from the dropping temperatures, the sound of early morning traffic on the streets below, and the alarm blaring its usual tone. Except, something’s different. Wrong. Zach is usually the first one to get out of bed anyway, but Willy doesn’t seem to have woken up like he always has when the alarm went off before practice- in fact he doesn’t seem to have moved at all from where he was the night prior.

 “Honey?” Zach asks trying to shake him awake.

 Nothing. A little louder and harder this time- nothing. Starting to panic, Zach bursts into the closet digging around for their travel suitcases. After having thrown half of the clothes out, he finds them, and grabs a small hand-held mirror from the toiletries bag. Holding it under Willy’s nose the glass starts to fog up. Good, he’s not dead at least.

 Zach hurriedly throws on some clothes and phones up emergency services, as well as the new coach and several teammates. EMT’s arrive within five minutes of him calling, and rush Willy out to the ambulance, constantly monitoring his dangerously low vitals on the way to the emergency room.

 By the time he was stabilized and Zach was let into the room, the entire team had arrived, bleary-eyed from sleep but still quite visibly concerned. The doctor began to explain that he suffered from a stroke sometime in the early hours of the morning, and that he was stuck in a coma. The rest started to become a blur as Zach got lost in his own thoughts, How did he get a stroke? We’re both too young for-- When is he going to wake up-- Is-- is he going to wake up? Please don’t leave me like this. I don’t--

 The thoughts are interrupted by Mitchy’s hand on his shoulder.

 “Hey, are you okay?”

 When he looks up the doctor had already left, and everyone was looking at him, all with the same question on their face.

 “I. I don’t know,” is all he can manage to say, he doesn’t really know the answer to that himself yet.

 “In light of events this morning, we’ll move practice to tomorrow,” Keefe decides and everyone nods in agreement, “Hyman, take the week off if you need it, I won’t think any less of you if you need more time off.”

 Outside in the ward, they start to hear a growing chatter, and the clattering of equipment. The Media.

 “Oh boy, already? I need to go take care of this. John? Do me a favour and call Kyle, have him restrict the media for injury protocol.”

 And with that the coach goes out and closes the door behind him, and Tavey steps into the bathroom to make his phone call. Zach pulls a chair over to the bedside and sits down, grabbing Willy’s hand. At this point he can’t hold back, lowering his head onto his hand and bed underneath it, as the tears start to break through.

 Mo makes his way over and puts his arm around Zach. Mitchy is suddenly reminded of his own boyfriend, Marty, being suddenly taken away from him when his plane crashed on his way back from the off-season, and starts tearing up. Tys pulls him into a hug and lets him cry into his shoulder. Everyone else in the crowded room just looks on solemnly.

 Zach stays at the hospital for three days. Initially Tavey steps up as captain and visits them first, bringing Zach food each day so he’d remember to actually eat. Everyone else visits in their own time.

 After the third day Zach returns to practice, something to hopefully take his mind off of what’s going on. It works well enough, returning to drills and playing on the first line for games. Focus. Focus on something else. The team. The game. Getting that puck into the net. Focus.

 It’s been three weeks since that cold morning. Zach’s thoughts are composed enough now, and they’re in the middle of a game at home. He’s in a face-off when he sees Kyle entering the player bench on the phone, they’ve been discussing different trade opportunities lately- a Marlie or two for a player from one of the other teams- so he doesn’t think much of it. When the play ends though to an off-side, he calls a timeout. Yeah, they’re losing 5-2, but they’re still in the second period, so they shouldn’t need it yet right?

 But when they all come together, there’s no whiteboards, no iPads, no talk of plays or strategies. Keefe seems to have lost his tongue, shuffling in place, so Kyle speaks up.

 “He’s gone. William. He’s gone.”

 It’s dead silent on the bench, aside from the few who had dropped what they were holding, and Zach’s world seemed to be crashing down along with them.

 “It was about four minutes ago, I had just got off the phone with the doctors. We um, we’ve decided to forfeit the game; I don’t think any of you wants to continue playing now.”

 Nobody seems to have the strength to respond. But they all stand up and make their way down the tunnel to the locker room while Kyle radios to the staff to forfeit, and block all media personnel from the Leafs’ sections of the building. When they’ve all dressed and make their way to the parking garage Zach is the first person to even say a word since Kyle told them.

 “Morgan, can you drive me home? I can’t really think straight.”

 He agrees and, and he’s not exactly wrong. At the moment everything is just noise, bright and blurry colours, and the cold air; he wouldn’t be able to tell the difference between 60 km/h or 150 km/h, or a red light on an intersection with a car coming from the other direction. Not to mention the fact he couldn’t bring himself to drive in their car, knowing Willy would never be in the passenger seat again.

 When they get to Zach’s apartment, he fumbles with the keys to get the door open. But seeing their home, *his* home now, makes his stomach churn. He bolts nearly through the bathroom door and pukes his guts out in the toilet. Composing himself, he gets himself back up and washes his mouth out in the sink, as his mind becomes a tempest of emotions: anger, frustration, despair, guilt.

 As he looks in the mirror, the anger takes over and he punches the glass with his hand, cracking it, and drawing blood from his knuckles before he collapses against the wall, bending his legs towards him and crying. The sound of breaking glass had Mo rushing over to see what happened, only to see the shattered reflections, and his teammate in tears on the floor.

 “Hey, hey, it’s going to be okay,” he bends down and then notices the blood, “shit, we better fix that.”

 Having been to their place enough times, Mo knew his way around, and so he dug through the cabinet to find the first aid kit. First examining the hand, then grabbing the tweezers to pull out the remnant shards of glass. Switching to a piece of cloth and wetting it with alcohol, he cleans the wound. It draws a sharp, pained breath from Zach.

 “Sorry, I know this probably hurts like hell,” once it’s cleaned, he wraps it tightly.

 He manages to get Zach ready enough for bed and sits on the couch, figuring he should probably stay and keep an eye on him for a while. Meanwhile Zach tries to sleep, but his thoughts are racing. He’s gone. William. He’s gone. - I love you Zachy. That’s the last thing I ever heard him say… and I can’t ever hear his voice again, or see that smile of his, the deepness of his eyes, his- his- his fucking laugh that could brighten an entire room. - Why wasn’t I there… Why- why him? Why do bad things happen to good people? It- it should’ve been me, not him, never him. I- I can’t- I’ll never be able to feel his touch again, never be able to hold him- I- I-… his thoughts trail off, and he’s whisked away to sleep.

 In the morning the tears are gone. There aren’t any left. Period. In its wake is just emptiness. A void which can’t be filled. Mo had made breakfast for them by the time Zach got out of the bedroom. They eat in near silence, Mo tries several times to say something, but can’t find the right words to say. All he can think of is “I’m sorry,” which the only response he gets is Zach looking up at him before looking back at the food.

 That night, he tries drinking his problems away. Forget. Just forget. It works for a while, but it always comes flooding back in the morning. The time they visited Niagara Falls with the team, when they were on the Ferris wheel together, the first time they kissed literally during a game, moving in together when his lease on the last place ended, all their date nights, the stroke-- he stopped. What was the point if it was only temporary.

 The funeral services had been arranged by Tavey and Kyle, it was an extremely private ceremony, attended by teammates and the bereaved family. Zach was quite visibly a wreck, but no one was really much better. It had shaken up everyone, he was more important to everyone than they had even realized. Zach managed to speak in basic Swedish that he learned from Willy to his family. David [Pastrnak] also showed up to mourn, on the verge of quitting his career in hockey- he just lost one of his oldest friends.

 Within the week, a joint statement was released by Kyle and Keefe about the death, to a shocked nation. Everywhere, from Los Angeles to Halifax, or Vancouver to Miami, almost every major city in Canada was pouring in support and remembrance. Everywhere Zach went, he would see some calibre of remembrance on a poster, billboard, or bus- a constant reminder, He’s gone.

 Cigarettes was the next thing he tried, but to no avail. He had felt the exact same as before after one, and so he threw the rest back into a drawer to be forgotten.

 The team had taken nearly a month away from playing, but had gotten back to it. But it wasn’t the same. You lose a player they’re usually either traded or retired. Their place in the lineup or their stall in the locker room would be changed out, but they’d still be around, just not under the same colours. Not this time. No team would ever have him again. The players just keep moving forward, it’s all they can do, but the thought always lingers in the back of their minds.

 Mo didn’t intend to, but he effectively moved in with Zach until he thought it was fine for him to be alone, besides Gards would keep their place up until then. It never really improved though. Zach would just go through the motions. Get up, eat, practice, sleep. Get up, eat, play, sleep. Repeat. He could definitely still score, and help the team, but the celebrations never had the same feeling. There was always someone missing that would never come back, and be on the ice, be on the lineup. Life had started to lose it’s luster, and nothing changed that. Get up, eat, practice, sleep. Get up, eat, play, sleep. Repeat. Repeat. Repeat.

 Time didn’t seem to have a meaning anymore either. It could be seconds, days, weeks, or months, Zach couldn’t tell the difference. It was always the same cold, dark world that it was yesterday. Repeat. Repeat. Repeat. He’s gone. He’s fucking gone.

 Was there any emotion left? No one knew. Everyone was consoling each other, but Mo, he didn’t know how to help. He’d never lost someone that close to him, Gards was there and waiting for him to come home. He did what he could, but even before starting to talk to a therapist he could see Zach was a husk of what he used to be. Everything was cold. Cold and dark, all of it a blur.

 Mo was already asleep on the couch, and Zach in bed when the city’s power grid failed and plunged the Greater Toronto Area into darkness. Zach walked out of the bedroom and through to the veranda, and sat on the railing. He looked up. Stars. It felt like eons since he last saw them. There’s something. A memory. Faint, but still there. Willy. When they both joined the Leafs in 2016, Zach was lost. It was a new place, new people, new everything. Willy was one of the first people he met. Willy had been to and from Toronto so many times as a kid with his father, he knew the area well. One of the first things they did together was drive out to a spot Willy would always go to. Since he was a kid, there was always this one place outside the city he would go to. It was a secluded little clearing where at night you could see the stars above. They had become friends quickly after that. It felt like centuries ago now though.

 Zach can’t feel anything anymore. He could be falling, but he doesn’t know. He swears he could hear someone calling his name, but it seems so far away and distorted. He doesn’t bother opening his eyes to check, everything is cold and dark, and the world around him is the same, there’s no point to. I love you Zachy. I love you too Willy. He feels like he hears that being said again, but it’s coming from everywhere, and nowhere. Then, nothing. Oddly, it becomes warm, warmth he hasn’t felt in who knows how long it’s been now. He feels something touch him. It’s familiar, yet completely foreign.

 “Zach.”

 Willy. Zach actually has the willpower to open his eyes now. Willy is pulling him up. He feels oddly weightless, and disorientated. He’s on the sidewalk. He tries to look behind to where he was but Willy holds his head with his hand and stops him.

 “Don’t.”

 He stops. By now he notices they’re both hovering off the ground.

 “Are we dead?”

 “Afraid so.”

 Willy moves over to the side of Zach and holds his hand as they both float away.

 “Where are we going?”

 “I don’t know, but I waited for you. Wherever it is, we’ll find out together.”

 “I love you honey.”

 “I love you too, forever and always.”

Ok so I had written out loads of this when my computer crashed and I lost it all so if the first half seems a little off it’s because I had to rewrite it all and just...urg

Plus I actually researched the Korean schooling system and did the maths on korean ages and all that so hopefully it’s as accurate as possible

You met Jihoon when you both started first grade

He just moved to Seoul from Masan with his family just in time to start primary school

You had been seated together by the teacher but neither of you started any conversation due to you both being shy

It wasn’t until the 20 minute break after second period you even talked to him

You saw him being surrounded by a group of about 4 other kids and he looked...sad

Walking up to them all, you heard that they were making fun of his satoori

So overcoming your shyness in order to help out a classmate

You move to stand in front of the boy and tell them off as well as a 7 year old you can

(Jihoon would later tell you that you looked like his mother when she was telling him off)

After they apologise and move away, you take Jihoon’s hand and pull him over to join you in drawing

And that’s where you friendship started

You quickly became best friends

You shared everything

Food, clothes, secrets

Even families considering you basically lived at each others house

Sometimes you thought your parents loved Jihoon more than you, not that you can blame them

Whenever he was in a musical, you made your parents buy tickets for every showing

Whenever he was in a drama you would drag both your families into one of your sitting rooms and make them all watch every episode with you

When he appeared on KM Idol War with Big Bang you wouldn’t shut up about how lucky he was

And you made sure he ate and got enough rest when he was a trainee

You were his biggest supporter

And he was yours

When your family pet died, he was your shoulder to cry on

He sat on your bed and listened to you gush about your crushes all night

And brought you your favourite ice cream when you got dumped for the first time

He celebrated with you when you got that high mark you had studied so hard for

And you loved each other to bits

It was only when you comforted him when his knee injury caused him to miss out on potentially debuting as a member of Astro that he realised these feelings weren’t completely platonic

He started noticing things he hadn’t payed attention to before

Like how well your hands fit together

Or how pretty your smile was when you found the snack you wanted in the convenience store

He never voiced anything though; he was happy with being your best friend

Whenever one of the lovely old grandmothers mentioned how cute you looked together during your regular market trips

Or when an auntie with a baby on her hip said she hopes her kid is lucky enough to find a relationship like yours when they grow up

You would simply smile and say thank you instead of denying and if you had ever looked at Jihoon in these moments 

You would see his ears turn bright red as a shy smile appeared on his face

You couldn’t blame people for thinking you were a couple instead of best friends considering that skinship was never a shy subject for either of you

You could often be found his head in your lap and your fingers running through his hair

And if you were walking together, if your arms or hands weren’t linked together then he would have his arms wrapped around you with his chin on your shoulder

(You always complain about how hard it is to move like that but he never listens and still does it)

Despite all this, you never gave any thought to it; being used to it all

It is only when Jihoon is accepted as a contestant on season 2 of PD101 to you start to question yourself

You find yourself missing him more than usual even though he isn’t far away

When you see him winking in the show; you feel butterflies in your stomach despite having witnessed him practicing his winking in your bedroom mirror

And you get jealous when people start fangirling/fanboying over his aegyo

The same aegyo he would use on you to get what he wants

And it suddenly hits you that you have a crush

Your best friend

And while you are in shock for the rest of the day, after a good nights sleep you wake up thinking that you can’t stop feeling what you are

So you go on as you were

Voting for your best friend and talking to him whenever you can

And you are so proud of him when he finds out that not only will he be debuting, but that he came in second place

That the next time you see him you give him the biggest hug ever, despite being in front of all the other newly Wanna One members

(According to Woojin, it lasted more than five minutes)

The next few weeks go by as normal; except for the fact that you see each other less due to him being so busy with getting ready to debut and all

You two are constantly confusing the other members of Wanna One with all your skinship

“So you two aren’t dating? Are you sure?”

“Are you and Daniel dating Seongwoo?”

“...if I say yes does that mean you have to ask them out? Ow!”

*cue both Daniel and Jihoon hitting Seongwoo*

You are both used to getting these comments, however it’s different now that you are both aware of your own feelings towards the other

Jihoon isn’t the only one with red ears during these times now

The constant teasing cause you two to sort of drift apart a little

Well, not really

You just start to become almost shy around each other, and you don’t talk nearly as much as you used to

And so you, being young and dumb, start to avoid him a little, hoping it will make it all die down a little

This behaviour continues on until after the debut of Wanna One

One night Jihoon is just sitting in bed think about why you were avoiding him 

Did he do something to make you hate him?

Did you find out about his crush on him?

He doesn’t get any sleep that night and so the next day he finds Jisung and asks for advice on what to do

(Jisung has to pause for a moment because he feels so touched that Jihoon came to him for advice)

Of course, Jisung simply tells him to just confess already because he is pretty sure you feel the same way

And so, with the confidence of his leader backing him up, Jihoon vows to do just that

He invites you over to the practice room to watch them, well, practice

Your are just browsing the internet on your phone when you receive a text from Jihoon asking you to join him

You quickly change out of you pajamas, subconsciously dressing a bit nicer than you would normally dress when meeting up with Jihoon, before saying a quick ‘see you later’ to your parents and heading out

As you arrive at the practice room, Jihoon greets you with the usual hug

Silently sighing in relief when you accept it instead of pushing him away

If you hated him then you wouldn’t have come in the first place so at least he knows that much now

For the next few hours, you cheer on the boys as they dance, handing out bottles of water and towels when needed and even having your own go at the dance

As they take a break, Jihoon walks over to you and pulls you outside

You both decide to ignore the whistles and catcalls of the boys behind you

As you come to a stop, he turns to face you looking more nervous than you had seen him before, which is hard considering how many times you had seen him nervous before auditions and performances

“Is everything alright?” you ask the boy before you, placing a hand on his cheek as you have often done before

He takes your hand off his cheek, but doesn’t let go of it

“I don’t think we can be best friends any more” he spits out

And as your eyes widen, grip on his hand loosening a little, he realises how that sounded

“No! No, I didn’t mean it like that! I meant that I like you and have for a while now but you’ve been avoiding me and so you probably knew this and don’t feel the same way even though Jisung hyung said you might but I needed to tell you and get it off my chest.” 

All of that is said with one breath

It is silent between you for a moment as you take his words in, before you take his other hand in yours and swing you arms between you

“So your saying that all the times that people have said we look like a cute couple, we could have actually been a couple?”

steve steve was absolutely walking on air. the weather was amazing and he was enjoying it with the woman he loved. of course, it wasn't a totally perfect afternoon due to his endearing clumsiness. after his second time dropping the venue folder, they decided it was better if peggy carried it instead. other than that, it couldn't have been better. "i really like the meadow, if i'm being totally honest," he glanced at peggy as they walked under a cluster of trees in magnolia park. "but the park is fine too, of course."

peggy "oh, dear. maybe we shouldn't have it here, then. i don't want people to be reminded of bad memories when they come here," she said, biting her lip in concern. then she glanced up at him with a teasing smirk. "you know that if anyone tries to start /anything/ at our wedding that i'll deal with them myself." they couldn't exactly hire security; plus, they didn't need any. the groom was captain america, after all. "i don't think you'll let that happen, though," she winked.

rey getting some fresh air was nice, as her dispute with derek was still ongoing, and she felt like she had the opportunity to really clear her mind of everything. until she stumbled across a couple. as soon as she saw the red and blue clothes (did they plan that or did they always just coincidentally dress that way?), she knew exactly who it was. she clenched her jaw but let out a sigh and tried to walk past without her face being seen, tilting it away as much as possible.

"oh, geez. i'm sorry about that," the avenger apologized to this person behind him, before he quickly realized who it was. "rey?"

rey no... he couldn't have just said that. had he? he /had/. he didn't love her. once upon a time they were inseparable, spending every day together. first he had used derek against her, and then he outright said he didn't love her. not even as a friend. her hands clasped over her mouth in shock as her eyes fell shut, not even acknowledging them anymore. silently, she began to sob as she slowly crumpled to her knees on the ground, slightly ripping the comfortable pajama pants she had on, decorated with stars. she hated this. she wanted her best friend back.

steve "it was." he admitted swiftly, avoiding her glance. it was before he knew peggy was alive. it was a mistake, all of it was. she had a boyfriend anyway. right as he's ready to turn on his heel, rey falls to the ground in front of them. at first he thinks she's hurt, so he accesses her body quickly until he realizes she's just crying. oh no. was it really that harsh? his jaw clenched as her scene attracted attention from civilians in the park. "rey... just get up, okay?"

peggy "steve," peggy gasped as soon as she saw rey fall to the ground. they were friends at one point; and she knew steve wouldn't want to see his friends hurt. even though it was obvious she was just crying, she knew steve would still want to help. maybe. so she stayed back but watched carefully as he approached her again, hoping things wouldn't get worse from here.

rey rey simply ignored them both, covering her face with her hands and tucking her knees to her chest as she continued to cry. after all they had gone through together... that was what he now thought of her? simply because she was jealous? sure she had said some things that went over the edge, but he knew she hadn't meant them. but his words... he meant each and every one. and she didn't care that he was now seeing her break down right in front of his eyes. she couldn't hide her sorrow anymore. she cried even harder as she leaned forward slightly, threading her fingers into her hair.

steve steve pursed his lips, sending peggy one last apologetic glance before crouching down next to rey. he wish he could comfort her like he used to, but it felt too unfamiliar to him at the moment. "c'mon, rey. get up." he curled his hands around her forearms, making sure to be gently while he pulled her to stand. he meant the words in the heat of the moment, but now he was beginning to regret them. peggy peggy nodded her head swiftly as her eyes saddened. she knew he had to take care of this. he needed as many friends as he could get here in magnolia, seeing as they had enough enemies. and she didn't want one friendship to be ruined because of some simple jealousy. she kept some distance, but watched closely with a sympathetic expression as he tried to apologize.

rey "no... no..." rey cried as he, literally, tugged her up to her feet. it took a few moments for her to get a stable stance on the ground, but when she finally did, she began wiping at her eyes as her sobs became almost completely silent. "y-you did- you-..." she tried to say, but only wept harder, wiping at her eyes yet again and trying to move out of his grip. she was beyond humiliated and ashamed now and just wanted to go back inside where no one could see her.

peggy peggy held onto steve's arm gently, though he was still holding a fragile rey up. she wondered to herself why she looked so sickly, but kept her thoughts to herself as she led them both inside, and up to their apartment. "i'll get some waters," she offered and stole a kiss when rey wasn't looking before moving into the kitchen to do so.

rey rey didn't want to go to their house, to where the two of them spent their time together. but the stress was overwhelming and she needed to sit down, but she didn't want to go to her home just yet. she still wanted desperately to fix things with steve. she let him practically pull her up the stairs and past the door, feeling too weak to do so at that point.

steve "okay." steve whispered quietly against her lips. he lead rey's weak frame to the couch, passing over the spot where the coffee table used to be. "-uh, are you alright?" he questioned, refusing to let go of the grip on her arm.

peggy "you don't seem too well," peggy agreed, bringing over a glass of water for each of them and setting it on the little makeshift table they had in place of the coffee table. she knelt before them and looked worriedly up at steve, silently asking him what was going on.

rey "yes," rey exhaled as he sat them down on the couch, closing her eyes and bringing her hands to her head. "i... d-derek and i were pushed down a flight of stairs... i hit my head and got knocked out. and bruised a couple of ribs... w-we went to the hospital and now i'm on five different kinds of medication..."

steve steve shook his head at peggy's questioning look. he had no idea what was going on. whatever it was, it was more than just her being upset. she looked horribly fatigued. "what?!" he exclaimed loudly. the floorboards in the house might as well vibrated at his staccato.

rey for some reason, she assumed steve had known about her injuries. but how could he possibly? they hadn't spoken in weeks. "i-i'm sorry, i thought you knew..." she admitted honestly, nodding in appreciation as peggy went to get her ice. then she moved her hair out of the way so steve could see the stitched up gash near her temple, with sweat-soaked bandages covering it.

steve way to go, steve. he felt absolutely terrible for everything at this point. all previous guilt he had was superimposed at her admission. "o-oh, god, rey. i'm so sorry." his gaze fell to his hands, which he quickly retracted from her forearms and placed in his lap. once peggy returned with the ice, he gave peggy his best attempt at a smile.

peggy peggy knelt in front of them yet again as she finished wrapping the bag of ice in a paper towel, giving a small, hesitant smile back to steve. "back of your neck, darling," she said to rey, handing it over carefully. any friend of steve's was a friend of hers. she was choosing to look past their differences, as they obviously wanted to as well.

rey rey shook her head. "i-it's okay, i should've told you..." she whispered, feeling bad that she'd, accidentally, of course, kept him in the dark about it all. it was why she couldn't stand up when he told her to, why she couldn't leave when all she wanted to do was run away. but maybe it helped them reconcile in the end. "thank you..." she whispered to peggy and placed the pack on the back of her neck, leaning back against the couch pillow with a slow exhale.

steve steve instantly sat up from his spot once peggy administered the ice. she didn't need to be on the floor anyways. "i don't blame you." after the whole coffee table mess, who would want to speak to him? he acted like a complete and utter fool in their apartment and in the park. "i'm sorry."

peggy "no, no, no," peggy mouthed reassuringly, shaking her head and helping him to sit again. "you sit, i'm okay." obviously rey wanted, or needed, his support right now, and she was sure he needed hers as well. they had just come back together, after all.

rey rey opened her eyes and looked sorrowfully over at steve, shaking her head gently. "don't apologize, it's my fault too... i-i didn't mean anything i said either, i just wanted your attention again..." she admitted. speaking of... she looked down at peggy sadly. "i-i'm sorry i was so jealous... it led me to do things that i wouldn't usually do. bad things, and it wrecked my relationship with the best friend i've ever had. so i'm sorry..."

steve steve responded to peggy's refusal with a tight lipped nod. "you didn't wreck anything." he murmured with sad eyes. "i shouldn't have got angry when you told me what you did. i acted the same way when you were with derek."

peggy: omg wtf when did u get here

peggy peggy smiled kindly and nodded to rey, gently patting her knee. "it's alright... everything's all better now," she reassured her with a light, soothing tone. obviously she and steve were very close, and it made her sad to think that they'd spent so much time apart because of peggy herself.

rey right... derek. that was a whole other ordeal that she still had to sort through. her eyes closed slowly as she let out a heavy sigh, readjusting the ice pack on the back of her neck. "i don't know what's going on with us now..." she admitted quietly, peeking up at steve again. "i want to be married to him... /so/ badly, but... but he's still not ready yet. and it's been /two months/... we've known each other for three of them... he doesn't understand that i haven't had a real connection with anyone for fifteen years... i don't want to waste anymore time in my life..."

Day 4: Well. I survived my first tribal council of the season, and even though it went exactly according to plan, while I slept my entire day away, I'm still really hesitant to tell myself that I'm doing well on my tribe. I'm really nervous that my tribe mates are playing me, and that I'm really boo boo tha fool here. I called Megan post-tribal, and I was finally able to get some closure on something that happened between us in our personal lives, which felt really good. After that, she asked me about the idol, to which I had responded "Wait, Julian didn't tell you?", which hopefully sows some seeds of doubt in Megan about Julian. Ideally, if the Enlil tribe has to go back to tribal council, the four of us can bear witness to a Megan vs. Julian war. Because unfortunately, the connections I have outside Enlil, are shared with either Julian or Megan. If Megan and Julian are going after each other pre-merge, or during a swap scenario, I don't have to share those connections anymore. After that, Megan and I just talked about the nudes we received during quarantine ~ I then promptly ran to Will to tell him about the potential crack I just formed between Julian and Megan, which was met with genuine excitement. I think I'm really gaining Will's trust, and I think we vibe so well together. Love that guy! Overall, it wasn't a very productive day because I woke up at 4:30p PST. Love that for me, thanks for shading me @ Tribal Bodhi.

going into this scavenger hunt as the tribe that went to tribal last is worrysome. It's a challenge that's fully dependent on our activity, so we are at a serious disadvantage against the other two tribes that get to choose someone less active to sit out. We don't have that luxury. The point/life system eases the blow, however, since we can get less active players 1 life while more active players can get 3. In case we lose, I'm trying to connect with everyone on the tribe. I really don't want to vote anyone out though. I have an alliance with Julian and JJ, and one with Will on the side. Chrissa wants to work with Julian, JJ and myself, and I think Megan and JJ have something on the side. I'm nervous for who would be the target in the vote, and any vote would hurt all of our games collectively. Hopefully we win because the next vote will not be easy AT ALL.

let me be clear with andrew I was not calling his hosting unfair i was calling the fact that a majority green item giving him a point unfair not the hosting but lack of yellow, also i have a headache i don't feel that good. and I just don't think zach should have had a point for it nothing against hosting obviously i watch a movie trivia thing where literally they have a challenge to challenge any questions that are unfair, that doesn't mean they are calling the question writers or the answer writers unfair.

Hello tumblr survivor world! Sorry I didnt confess for episode 1, I was going to but i accidentally exited out of the page when i almost finished writing it. Anyways, it was just a cast assessment for my tribe so tl;dr everyone on my tribe is great and its really sad that we have to vote someone out now. So this whole weekend I was away so I was REALLY worried that I would be voted out since I sat out of the challenge. But after talking to Johnny and Isabelle, it seems like Madison will be voted out tonight. Hi sorry I forgot to do a confessional this round so this will be short imma just say a few things 1. I don’t trust julian one bit he can stop being shady to me 2. I can’t believe we aren’t going to tribal I’m so fkn happy i was able to pull out the win for our tribe because I didn’t want to lose anybody else 3. I love and adore will with all of my being and he’s my number 1 ally right now 4. I find it highly doubtful that there’s only one idol in this game and that you can’t find it until merge but that’s as far as I can get in the idol search for now so I guess there’s nothing I can do about it 5. My Purple edit is amazing right now. But having played more games than most of these newbies, I have decided to take on the role of teacher and becoming more of a "role model" for these newbies. I feel like I have the closest bond with Zach, and I need to get a little closer with Collin. I have Grace from past games, and then there are the others who I do not really have any strong bonds with at the moment. I guess I need to start going to them more and show that I want to work with them.

Island Rasdhoo

Rasdhoo is the only island I’ve visited 10 (!) times in the last 5 years. The first visit was back in 2015, when a budget holiday was just started in the Maldives.

At that time there was very little information about local islands, but because of that island, I created a blog about local islands and later founded a travel agency to the Maldives.

Where is Rasdoo located?

The island is located in the North Ari Atoll, 60 km west of Male. The size of Island is approximately 500×600 m. Almost the entire territory of the island is built up. The population is about 1200 people. You would think like so many people can live on such a small piece of land, but in reality, you won’t even notice it.

Rasdhoo beach and house reef

At the moment, the beach on the island is not very large, about 100 m in length, which is not so much compared to Ukulhas or Thoddoo. However, during the season it’s packed by people. There are sun loungers for common use on the beach , which is very convenient. Entrance to the water can be inconvenient, especially during low tide, because in some places there is a lot of dead coral. Therefore, in order to avoid injuries, I advise you to wear special shoes (I personally do not do this because I have already walked in such places many times). If you don’t have shoes, it is best to swim right away.

Soon, hopefully, it will change because a joint project with the Indians involves cleaning the coastal area of debris and expanding the beach. Due to the coronavirus, all work is postponed, so if everything goes well, then by the 2020/2021 season the project will be completed. Let’s hope for the best.

The length of the house reef is about 1 km. In this case, you will see all the most interesting stuff on its outer side. The current is constantly changing: today it may not be, tomorrow you can only swim with flippers. If you are a beginner, then you have to snorkel only with a buddy for your own safety.

What you can see on the outer reef? Depending on the current and time of the year, on the reef you can see huge schools of reef fish, batfish, tuna, parrot fish; there are Napoleon fish and schools of barracudas. Rasdhoo is famous for its habitats of black and white tip reef sharks. And for good reason – in one place you can see up to 3-5 sharks, is this not breathtaking? These sharks are absolutely safe for humans and they scare you more than you do them. So when you see them, you can just freeze and watch them.

The most awesome experience while snorkelling was when I met a school of batfish. They were so friendly and close to me, that I could even touch them! Without any reason, they followed me around 100 m. ! I don’t know why they liked me, but it was extremely unusual and breathtaking!

Tip: if you want the fish / rays / sharks to come towards you, then do not make sudden movements do not try to catch them (anyway they are faster than you). Best of all is just to stop and wait.

Several turtles live on the reef and you can see eagle rays almost every day!

If all this staff can be seen on a house reef, then why you should take a snorkelling safari tour? It is a good question that you asked. That is why I advise you to take this tour.

Firstly, you will be taken to places where the water is more transparent, more live corals, more fish.

Secondly, there are places, for example, next to Veligandu resort, where you can see up to 7 (!) turtles and even manta rays! Mantas do not swim ashore because they prefer deep water.

Thirdly, with a high chance you will want to try scuba diving to see more. Perhaps this is a so-so reason for some, but diving opens you a truly new underwater world compared to snorkelling because corals and fish will be much closer and you can make out them in detail.

What else to do on Rasdhoo?

Perhaps the most breathtaking and amazing place I visited in the Maldives is the nearby chain of uninhabited islands and sandbanks. Every time I visit Rasdhoo, I definitely visit these places.

What is so unique about it? First of all, there is lagoon, where you can see a real 50 shades of blue with a beautiful reef in the center. A lot of fish live on the reef, which themselves swim up to you because they expect something delicious from you. They are already taught this. Therefore, if you still decide to feed them, then take a bit of bread in a plastic bottle and mix with water. But be careful, there can be a lot of them.

The second thing is ability to walk by water between these islands and sandbanks. There is some magic in the sandbanks because you are on a piece of land without any plants or palms in the middle of the ocean! Isn’t that fascinating?

The outer reef of the lagoon is rich in its wildlife and you can see sharks, stingrays and turtles. But there is always a current between Rasdhoo and lagoon, so I strongly do not recommend swimming alone there!

Dolphin safari

Between Rasdhoo and Thoddoo there is a place where a group of dolphins gathers in the evenings. They are very friendly and follow the boat. Sometimes they swim so close that you can even touch them (but you shouldn’t do that). But officially you can’t swim with them. You can try, who knows, maybe you are lucky and they will come to you.

Night / Morning Fishing

Usually, it’s still evening activity. No need to be a professional fisherman to catch a fish in Maldives. It is enough to have only reels and fishing lines. You can ask to cook caught fish at your hotel (in most cases this is free of charge, but depends on the hotel). Personally, I’m not a good fisherman, so I tried only once and caught a small snapper.

Romantic dinner

It can be arranged either on the beach or on a sandbank. Based on my experience, the beach is not very suitable for that, because there is almost always someone nearby.

For this reason, a sandbank will be the best solution. After all, there will be no one else except you. The maximum level of privacy is guaranteed!

Suba Diving

Rasdhoo is truly famous for its diving. It’s said, this area is one of the best in the Maldives. Seven (!) diving centres (nowhere else in the Maldives you can find so many centres on one island) offer to take a short training course and dive with an instructor. A great advantage of Rasdhoo is easy to access dive spots even for beginners. Even diving in 8 m depth will open you a new underwater world!

I made my first dive in 2015 near Kuramathi Resort. At that time I was wearing glasses but has dived with contact lenses. After that, I decided that if I return to the Maldives, I will do a LASIK correction and take the course. Just next year it happened. Now I have Rescue Scuba Diver certification, just only one step for a divemaster!

For certified divers, 17 spots are available. The most popular among them:

Madivaru Corner, one of the most famous dive spot in Maldives due to its excellent reef, a large number of fish (barracuda, batfish, Napoleon, etc.), sharks and stingrays. Every time you can see something new.

Caves. The farthest point from Rasdhoo. Drift dive with many caves at different depths. It features a wide variety of soft and hard corals. You can see a lot of lobsters!

Hammerhead point. One of the few places in the Maldives where you can see hammerhead sharks. Morning dive that starts at 6:00. Chance to see sharks 50/50. I tried several times – not lucky.

Manta point. Manta ray cleaning station. You can see up to 5 rays in one place. You can also snorkel at this point, but diving is much better.

Shark Point. Many reef, whitetip and blacktip sharks.

The perfect solution would be to take a package of 8-10 dives and dive into the most popular places. Up to 4 dives can be completed per day.

Therefore, I recommend everyone to try diving, after which your ideas about the underwater world will change dramatically!

For water sports lovers, a centre is open on Rasdhoo where you can rent a jet ski, wake / flyboard, kite surfing and more.

Rasdhoo Infrastructure

Rasdhoo is the administrative center of the North Ari Atoll. This means that the island has everything you need for life:

– groceries and hardware stores. There you can buy fruit and drinks, and also beach staff. It’s very convenient for those who left something at home. – gift shops. There are 6 gift shops on the island. There are lots of various souvenirs, everyone can find something to his liking. – several cafes. There are 4 local cafes (two more are coming) on the island, and what’s more, most of them are intended for tourists. – dive centres. There are 7 dive centres on the island. And one water sport centre – a bank;

– ATM (your can withdraw rufies only, the service fee is 100 ryfiyaas, and it doesn’t matter how much money you’re going to take out); – a branch office of the mobile network operator. – a hospital. They can help you in a case if you have got a minor illness. Otherwise, they’ll transfer you to Male by speedboat. – a post office; – a police station.

Where to stay?

There are a lot of places to stay, already about 30. The cost varies from $ 40 to $ 110 per night.

I always stay only at Shallow Lagoon Rasdhoo. And that’s why:

Firstly, this is one of the first hotels I’m working with since 2017. During this time, I organized holidays for clients from 40 countries to that hotel, and there were no concerns during that time. I also brought my friends here several times while I was living in the Maldives in 2016-2017. Everyone was satisfied.

Secondly, they are very responsible and easily go to meet customers (which is not so common in the Maldives), therefore they are always ready to satisfy any of your wishes. The staff is always nearby, so there is no need to look for anyone if you need anything. In this hotel you will feel like at home!

Thirdly, Shallow Lagoon Rasdhoo is almost the only example of a hotel that is developing and expanding. I work with 20+ hotels on local islands, so I can see the changes. Fifthly, they recently equipped a new kitchen and hired a chef from Sri Lanka, who used to work at Adaaran Rannalhi Resort (the vast majority of hotels can only afford Bangladeshi or local). Therefore, high-quality food is guaranteed!

Sixth, I have an exclusive partnership with them. This means that I can offer you the most attractive prices for accommodation, meals, excursions.

This hotel is above average price range and they used to work with agents directly (not through booking or agoda). But this cost is fully justified by the quality of service they provide.

Valencia 2014 (8) 066 – The National Ceramic Museum in The Palacio del Marques de Dos Aguas

We decided to go for a city break rather than sun in Tenerife again this September. Other than a few days in the North East we haven’t been away since last March and wanted a change and hopefully some sun. The problem is getting flights from the north of England to the places we want to go to. We chose Valencia as we could fly from East Midlands – which was still a pain to get to as it involved the most notorious stretch of the M1 at five in the morning. In the end we had a fairly good journey, the new Ryanair business class pre-booked scheme worked quite well and bang on time as usual. It was dull when we landed with storms forecast all week, the sky was bright grey – the kiss of death to the photography I had in mind. I was full of cold and wishing I was at work. It did rain but it was overnight on our first night and didn’t affect us. There has been a drought for eleven months apparently and it rained on our first day there! The forecast storms didn’t materialise in Valencia but they got it elsewhere.

You May notice discrepancies in the spelling of some Spanish words or names, this is because Valencian is used on signs, in some guide books and maps. There are two languages in common use with distinct differences. There may also be genuine mistakes – it has been known!

Over the course of a Monday to Sunday week we covered 75 miles on foot and saw most of the best of Valencia – The City of Bell Towers. The Old City covers a pretty large area in a very confusing layout. There was a lot of referring to maps – even compass readings! – a first in a city for us. The problem with photography in Valencia is that most of the famous and attractive building are closely built around, some have poor quality housing built on to them. Most photographs have to be taken from an extreme angle looking up. There are no high points as it is pan flat, there are a small number of buildings where you can pay to go up on to the roof for a better view and we went up them – more than once!

The modern buildings of The City of Arts and Sciences – ( Ciutat de Las Arts I de les Ciencies ) are what the city has more recently become famous for, with tourists arriving by the coachload all day until late at night. They must be photographed millions of times a month. We went during the day and stayed till dark one evening, I gave it my best shot but a first time visit is always a compromise between ambition and realism, time dictates that we have to move on to the next destination. I travelled with a full size tripod – another first – I forgot to take it with me to TCoAaS! so It was time to wind up the ISO, again! Needless to say I never used the tripod.

On a day when rain was forecast but it stayed fine, albeit a bit dull, we went to the Bioparc north west of the city, a zoo by another name. There are many claims made for this place, were you can appear to walk alongside some very large animals, including, elephants, lions, giraffe, rhino, gorillas and many types of monkey to name a few. It is laid out in different geographical regions and there is very little between you and the animals, in some cases there is nothing, you enter the enclosure through a double door arrangement and the monkeys are around you. It gets rave reviews and we stayed for most of the day. The animals it has to be said gave the appearance of extreme boredom and frustration and I felt quite sorry for them.

The course of The River Turia was altered after a major flood in the 50’s. The new river runs west of the city flanked by a motorway. The old river, which is massive, deep and very wide between ancient walls, I can’t imagine how it flooded, has been turned into a park that is five miles long. There is an athletics track, football pitches, cycle paths, restaurants, numerous kids parks, ponds, fountains, loads of bridges, historic and modern. At the western end closest to the sea sits The City of Arts and Sciences – in the river bed. Where it meets the sea there is Valencia’s urban Formula One racetrack finishing in the massive marina built for The Americas Cup. The race track is in use as roadways complete with fully removable street furniture, kerbs, bollards, lights, islands and crossings, everything is just sat on the surface ready to be moved.

We found the beach almost by accident, we were desperate for food after putting in a lot of miles and the afternoon was ticking by. What a beach, 100’s of metres wide and stretching as far as the eye could see with a massive promenade. The hard thing was choosing, out of the dozens of restaurants, all next door to each other, all serving traditional Paella – rabbit and chicken – as well as seafood, we don’t eat seafood and it constituted 90% of the menu in most places. Every restaurant does a fixed price dish of the day, with a few choices, three courses and a drink. Some times this was our only meal besides making the most of the continental breakfast at the hotel. We had a fair few bar stops with the local wine being cheap and pleasant it would have been a shame not to, there would have been a one woman riot – or strike!

On our final day, a Sunday, we were out of bed and down for breakfast at 7.45 as usual, the place was deserted barring a waiter. We walked out of the door at 8.30 – in to the middle of a mass road race with many thousands of runners, one of a series that take place in Valencia – apparently! We struggled to find out the distance, possibly 10km. The finish was just around the corner so off we went with the camera gear, taking photos of random runners and groups. There was a TV crew filming it and some local celebrity (I think) commentating. Next we came across some sort of wandering religious and musical event. Some sort of ritual was played out over the course of Sunday morning in various locations, it involved catholic priests and religious buildings and another film crew. The Catholic tourists and locals were filling the (many) churches for Sunday mass. Amongst all of this we had seen men walking around in Arab style dress – the ones in black looked like the ones from ISIS currently beheading people – all carrying guns. A bit disconcerting. We assumed that there had been some sort of battle enactment. We were wrong, it hadn’t happened yet. A while later, about 11.30 we could hear banging, fireworks? No it was our friends with the guns. We were caught up in total mayhem, around 60 men randomly firing muskets with some sort of blank rounds, the noise, smoke and flames from the muzzles were incredible. We were about to climb the Torres de Serranos which is where, unbeknown to us, the grand, and deafening, finale was going to be. We could feel the blast in our faces on top of the tower. Yet again there was a film camera in attendance. I couldn’t get close ups but I got a good overview and shot my first video with the 5D, my first in 5 years of owning a DLSR with the capability. I usually use my phone ( I used my phone as well). Later in the day there was a bullfight taking place, the ring was almost next to our hotel, in the end we had other things to do and gave it a miss, it was certainly a busy Sunday in the city centre, whether it’s the norm or not I don’t know.

There is a tram system in Valencia but it goes from the port area into the newer part of the city on the north side, it wouldn’t be feasible to serve the historic old city really. A quick internet search told me that there are 55,000 university students in the city, a pretty big number. I think a lot of the campus is on the north side and served by the tram although there is a massive fleet of buses as well. There is a massive, very impressive market building , with 100’s of stalls that would make a photo project on its own, beautiful on the inside and out but very difficult to get decent photos of the exterior other than detail shots owing to the closeness of other buildings and the sheer size of it. Across town, another market has been beautifully renovated and is full of bars and restaurants and a bit of a destination in its own right.

A downside was the all too typical shafting by the taxi drivers who use every trick in the book to side step the official tariffs and rob you. The taxi from the airport had a “broken” meter and on the way home we were driven 22 km instead of the nine that is the actual distance. Some of them seem to view tourists as cash cows to be robbed at all costs. I emailed the Marriot hotel as they ordered the taxi, needless to say no answer from Marriot – they’ve had their money. We didn’t get the rip off treatment in the bars etc. that we experienced in Rome, prices are very fair on most things, certainly considering the city location.

All in all we had a good trip and can highly recommend Valencia.

Sometimes a big drive is just something that you have to do. So it was for us on Sunday when we both woke early for what I thought was going to be the beginning of a trip to the Coromandel when Sarah suggested that we head to Hastings and catch up with Adrian and Sally who we had met in the South Island.

Leaving Auckland not long afterwards it was really nice to have the motorway almost to ourselves unlike what it would be like just an hour or so later. We made really good time, The motorhome has been running so much better after having had the recall completed. Probably because they replaced the engine management controller.

As we drove down the motorway I commented to Sarah about the number of Mustangs and other Fords on the road. We pulled into the Caltex truck stop in Bombay to see a number of them gathered together. There was apparently a large gathering of Fords to be held in Hamilton that day.

We had messaged Adrian and Sally before leaving Auckland letting them know we where coming and as we arrived into Napier we spoke with Adrian agreeing to meet at the Clifton Reserve in Te Awanga. This is a freedom camping area located right on the beach.

It was really crowded when we arrived but we managed to sneak into quite a sheltered spot but one that still had us alongside the water. We felt very lucky to be here. Adrian and Sally arrived an hour or so later managing to take a waterfront spot that had been vacated by another camper just a few minutes beforehand.

According to Adrian and Sally who are locals a lot of the local motorhomer’s use this place like a weekend retreat arriving on Friday and departing late on Sunday so it’s a lot quieter during the week.

It’s not often that we have come across a freedom camping area in such a pretty spot and the Hastings District Council deserve some gratitude for designating such a great spot for freedom camping. I would imagine that over summer it would be close to impossible to find a space to squeeze into.

We had met Sally and Adrian in Motueka and had spent a number of days together so we had promised on parting that we would catch up when we where in the area. We almost made it when we toured the East Cape but had to drive home from Gisborne before getting to Napier so it was good to be able to get together and catch up on what each other had been doing since we last met.

The following morning after an amazing sunrise it was time to dust off the cobwebs from our E Bikes and wake them up from the winter hibernation period for a ride along the cycle path that passes by the camp.

Firstly we decided that we would head towards the end of the trail at Clifton, which is where the walk to Cape Kidnappers begins. It was here 17 or so years ago when we did one of our big trips in our Mitsubishi Canter that we walked to the cape and back to see the Gannets. I will always remember this walk as our youngest son was to tired to walk the final 2 or 3 kms back to the motorhome and I ended up carrying him on my shoulders.

Sadly the campground is suffering from some serious coastal erosion, as is a lot of the coast along here. The campground has lost metres of usable space and the original access road has been mostly washed away. Now there is a rather rough road to get to the camp while work goes on to try and hold back the sea and restore better access.

Returning from the bike ride Adrian and Sally offered to take us up to Te Mata Peak for a chance to take in the views. Rising 399 metres above sea level Te Mata is a popular tourist place with car parks at various levels so the fitter among you can walk along one of the number of walking tracks to the summit.

After taking advantage of a couple of great photo opportunities Sarah noticed the launching ramp for the hang gliders and base jumpers. Looks pretty scary to me but our oldest son has done a bit of base jumping so we sent him a photo of the ramp. It looks a really long way down.

From here it was down to Havelock North for a bite to eat at one of the local cafes. A really pretty spot with grape vines growing around the roadside to create shelter in the summer. Not the sort of thing you see in the main street of Auckland and I thought a very nice touch.

Back at the motorhome it was time to jump back on the bikes and head off in the other direction. Again it’s really easy riding as the trail is on top of the stopbanks that follow the river. It was amazing to see all the fresh plantings for the orchards, there must be thousands of trees being planted around here.

Still recovering from the morning ride and with my backside beginning to feel rather sore we rode for about 10kms before turning back. I thought it had been quite easy peddling on the way out and that was because we had the wind behind us so it was a bit more difficult coming home, still however a great ride.

During the bike ride we came across another freedom camping area at Haumoana this camp is set back from the beach a bit with no sea views but would still be a handy place to stay if the other camps where full.

That evening Adrian and Sally had made a Pizza to share during happy hour. With Adrian making the dough and then cooking it on his Weber BBQ we were both super impressed it was absolutely delicious. Then we had a sort of shared meal for dinner with us springing for Fish and Chips from the takeaway just down the road from the camp and them doing chicken wings and scampi on the BBQ. Great night!

With two nights the limit at the camp in Te Awanga used up, it was time to move. We had agreed that we would move to the NZMCA Park in Napier but as we drove along SH2 we noticed the Evers Swindell Reserve on our right as we crossed over the bridge. A quick phone call to Adrian and we had changed where we had decided to stay. Yet another great freedom camping spot provided by the local council.

From the new camping spot the cycle trail continues in both directions allowing us to ride both before and after lunch. Credit to both Napier and Hastings with the with the work they have done on these trails they are such fun to ride, with scenic vistas at every corner.

As it’s whitebait season there where a number of people at various spots along the rivers trying there luck hopefully they had more success than some friends of Adrian’s whose catch totaled 7 and 22 not really enough for a decent feed.

Since we decided not to stay at the NZMCA Park in Napier we thought we would at least visit and rode down from where we were staying. I must say it was an impressive size camp well marked out with what looked like heaps of space for motorhomes and caravans either on the grass or using an area of hardstand during the soggy winter months.

That night was to be our last with Adrian and Sally on this visit so it was another happy hour with one of Adrian’s pizza’s, we will have to call him Luigi, he really has it sorted.

We have found out that the Hastings District Council strictly enforce their 2 day maximum stay policy on the camps when at around 9.30pm there was a knock on the door of the motorhome that we chose not to answer as we had no idea who was out there (they didn’t identify themselves). After they had gone we went out to have a look to discover the above notice under the wipers.

In the morning we emailed the council to ask why we got this notice when it was our first night at the camp and did the two nights we had spent at the Clifton Reserve count. An email back stated that it was 2 nights at each place and an error by their security guards. The lesson is though that they strictly enforce your stay.

In the morning there where a number of rowers up and down the river, Just so peaceful. What a great place to stay this has been. Sadly as our travel schedule dictates it was time to move on. So goodbyes to Adrian and Sally until next time it’s been great and we miss you already.

One thing we didn’t do here is take advantage of all the local vineyards and there certainly are plenty of them. I think next time when we have more time available we will explore and sample, sounds like a good plan.

Freedom camping in Hastings Sometimes a big drive is just something that you have to do. So it was for us on Sunday when we both woke early for what I thought was going to be the beginning of a trip to the Coromandel when Sarah suggested that we head to Hastings and catch up with Adrian and Sally who we had met in the South Island.

Retrospection time

Hi all, so I’m writing this the day before I head back out to Boston! I wanted to start off with practical tips that hopefully don’t seem obvious, because they certainly didn’t to me when I first got here. So without any further ado:

Housing

Don’t make the same mistake I did and get yourself a super expensive place via airbnb because a) you can reserve it in advance and b) you didn’t know any better. There are tons of oneroomtels and goshiwons around, you’ll find somewhere, don’t worry. If you feel brave enough, you can just check out some places online (goshipages.com! a lifesaver) and kakaotalk with the manager about the rooms, availability, etc.The place I eventually moved to was unusually cheap at 300,000 won/month, but it was also very tiny and not the most comfortable. The budget Light gives you is a good measure of about how much you should be looking to spend - around 400,000 to 450,000 won/month will get you a decent, dorm-like room with the must-have amenities. Life in Seoul is exhausting, so if you’re anything like me you’re going to do a lot more resting at home than you expected, so be aware of that when housing shopping!

Being able to check places out in person is great - the pictures online are, as you might expect, not always entirely accurate or representative. If I were to do this summer over again, I would book a cheap hotel or airbnb for maybe ~4 days after I arrived, and then once in Seoul go check out some places in person and get moving. 

Oh, and having a place near a subway station is really a must. Having lived both near and far from one, I can say that having one near to (as in, 5-10 minute walking distance) stop makes things so much easier and encourages you to go out and explore way more than if you have to take a bus to the subway every time. Obviously you’ll probably want said station to be only a few stops from your school’s station. I lived at Yesol Livingtel in Nakseongdae, one stop away from the SNU stop, and it was great - it was close enough that I could take the bus straight to school and back if I wanted, which is good for SNU especially being so far from its own subway stop - but I had that easy subway access too. 

Cell phone

Before I came here I convinced myself that I could live on wifi alone. NOT SO. I WAS PUNISHED FOR MY HUBRIS. The wifi here is ubiquitous, yes, but only for people who already have established, contract-based phone plans - which, if you’re staying for one term, you will probably not be getting. If you have a friend who’s a Korean citizen who can help you out, I think you have a lot more options for getting a data plan. For me, though, I just got a 90-day prepaid sim from Trazy, which you can reserve online and pick up at a few different places in the city. Topping it off once you run out of data seems like a bit of a pain, but I didn’t have to for my trip and was able to make it last until the end by pretty much only using it to look up directions, kakaotalk, and other necessary stuff.  Trazy definitely isn’t your only option, though, so if you want more internet access shop around. Just be mindful that a lot of phone plans are geared towards Korean residents and so might require that you be Korean or have an Alien Registration Card, which one-term fellows probably will not have.

The weather

The summer is hot. Bring an umbrella and a bottle of water with you every day everywhere, no matter what. Nothing new here.

Transportation

As soon as you touch down, get a T-Money card from a convenience store and load it. You can only load it with cash, so stop at an ATM first. Don’t be afraid to put a lot of money on it, though - you’ll use it, trust me! Transportation in and around Seoul is so easy and convenient that it’ll be gone before you know it. Make sure to always carry some cash on you, too, just in case you run of TMoney so you won’t be stranded. You can reload it at the kiosks in subway stations or at certain convenience stores, depending on where you bought it. Note that if you run out and have nowhere to reload it, you can pay cash to take the bus (and you don’t need exact change). You can also pay cash in taxis if need be, though it’s much more of a hassle than using TMoney and you might not be able to get change. Plus, it’s hard to predict how much a taxi ride will be, as it varies based on traffic and time of day. Moral of the story is, you should always keep more than you really need to on your card and carry at least 5-10,000 won in cash with you just in case. Nobody wants to have to walk 3 km home in 100 degree heat!

Money

On a related note, I had never traveled abroad before and so I didn’t know how foreign transaction fees worked and what cards would be accepted. I have a Discover credit card that has no foreign transaction fees, and it was accepted pretty much everywhere here (with a few notable exceptions - see the cash carrying rule above!), so I used it for everything whenever I could. Global ATMs and almost all businesses will accept Visa and Mastercard debit and credit cards, but my bank (and maybe yours too) charges fees as a percent of the transacted money, so be conscious of that when tracking how much money you’re spending. Also, make sure to put a travel alert to let your banks/credit card companies know you’re going abroad BEFORE you go - you can usually do that on their websites, or if not then in a branch. If you don’t do this, you might get shut off when you try to use it here, because your bank will assume someone stole your card!

Language study, outside and inside the classroom

You will get embarrassed. A lot. Because of the circumstances this is basically unavoidable. I spent the first few days here basically shut up in my room, because I was too afraid to go outside and interact with people. You’ll note that this is an excellent way to starve to death, and also SO TOTALLY not the point of this trip! At some point you do have to just say screw it and put yourself out there and be able to laugh at yourself when you get into an awkward situation - this is the only way you’ll ever actually get better. It’s like being a little kid again; you have to make a lot of mistakes and get laughed at by those around you a LOT before you actually figure out what it is you’re doing. By the end, I was able to have a comfortable conversation with my buddy and sorta stumble-chat through interactions with cashiers at local stores, like some sort of pro at broken Korean. And it was fun! I was meeting new people and it was so encouraging, even though I probably said 0 perfectly correct sentences.

As for the classroom study - no one is saying that you have to study for hours a day (quite the opposite) but do take it seriously, because the few people I noticed slacking off also seemed to just not be enjoying themselves at all, or improving in their Korean. I know homework is homework and homework is boring, but it’s not often you get the chance to dedicate yourself to just language learning for such a long period of time. I might still kinda suck at Korean, but looking back on where I was at the beginning I’ve learned so much, and a good chunk of it is just thanks to the grammar we learn in class and the explanations of the teachers. This goes without saying, but don’t be afraid to ask questions either! In my experience, half the class is also confused about that one weird grammar you just learned but they’re too afraid to ask.

The ~experience~

It’s amazing. This summer has definitely been the best summer of my life. My vague-but-genuine advice would be this: say yes to things whenever you can. Talk to people in your classes, then go out for dinner and drinks with them. Take yourself on dates to places that look cool. Go to the Hangang parks on Friday nights, with friends or alone, because those can turn out to be the best nights ever. Eat a lot of bingsu. Take weekend or even just daylong trips outside the city (bus trips are surprisingly cheap. Korea is not that big). Revel in it! Because I already miss Korea and I haven’t even left yet. The term will give you exactly as much as you give it, so if you sit around and be mopey that’s what you’ll remember. Make those memories! Do it for the ‘gram! (Okay, only do SOME things for the ‘gram.)

Do parents really expect their teens in highschool to pay for their own cars?

Its enraging when I hear my parents/parents in general tell their kids, who have their licenses to pay for a car yourself . Not even a split? A loan? These kids are still in highschool! Even after highschool in college, I just don't see how one can pay for even a cheap used car themselves unless they dedicate their life and save every penny for the damn car. People that age usually earn close to minimum wage, and if they spend all their time working instead of studying, that's all their ever going to make. Ex) my friend earns 9.25 hourly at a grocery store (he's worked there for a while so its not exact minimum wage), and works 40 hours a week. He is ALWAYS at work. At the end of the week, his checks are worth about 338 after taxes. A crappy used car is probably about 5000? I'm not fully sure. Someone that age would have to work 40 hours a week for quite a long time. Since they're teenagers, that would pretty much leave them no time for studying/doing homework and a social life in general. Don't parents want their children to perform well academically as well? Aside from financial issues of their own, why wouldn't a parent with a decent amount of money atleast agree to help their responsible teenager pay for a used or inexpensive car? I was in a car accident 4 days ago. My Mother was the passenger in my car (I was driving). I was on the off ramp getting off the freeway. All cars behind me were stopped. I was stopped waiting to make a right turn. An emergency vehicle was coming in my direction from my left. Therefore, I was waiting for the emergency vehicle to pass. The person behind me (large dodge ram truck I am in an '08 2 door Infiniti coupe) thought I went so he 'gunned it' to get in front of the emergency vehicle. Unfortunately, we had not gone so he pushed my vehicle out in front of the emergency vehicle. Luckily, I was able to turn my car out of the way. I did not hit anyone (no one was in front of me). My Mother and I were both put into a gurney and taken to a local hospital in an ambulance. We both had our seat belts on and suffered whiplash. We were released 5-6 hours later after x-rays, etc. We were both prescribed medicine. My Mother has had 3 brain tumors and has trouble with her speech etc. and any violent startling trauma can get her shaken up pretty badly and confused. I know she hit her head but, she is in pain but not nearly as much as I am. With my Mother's condition I don't know if this kind of thing can have negative effects later on. I know that my neck and back is pretty messed up. It hurts to stand for after 15 minutes or so. My car is pretty messed up and had to be towed. I plan on taking it back to the Infiniti shop to get all new parts. My car has all the upgrades in it so I want it to be taken care of. Am I allowed to take it to the Infiniti dealership or will Geico (the other persons insurance) not allow that, or does it not matter? The police gave the guy that hit us a citation. So far I don't see any that cover maternity, and we do want to have another child within the next year or two... We don't get sick often, but our baby needs her regular checkups and vaccinations, we need our regular checkups, vision and dental, and of course catastrophic coverage in the event something really bad were to happen. I don't see much purpose in me having insurance for myself, a young woman, that doesn't cover maternity or birth control, other than for the sake of catastrophic coverage. But if need be I could get my own insurance plan for maternity/birth control/whatever if I could find an affordable one, and they can be on their own plan that doesn't cover maternity.
