In Order to Haunt This Earth
At the movie theater, where I worked concessions, an aproned girl beamed at me through the popcorn-scented, Yellow #5 lights. Her hair was neon red, teasing brunette at the roots.
“Do you believe in ghosts?” She asked.
I blinked, because it had been months, maybe years since I had even thought of ghosts.
“No.”
I didn’t get to know her well, in our secret years – that time between times that will be glossed over in our obituaries. But I remember her in the back, perched on the thirty-five pound bags of popcorn seed, on her laptop, trying to submit college aid applications by deadline.
“How did you do it?” She asked.
“I had a lot of help.” I replied hollowly, because it’s all so different isn’t it? Wasn’t it? Now she is laughing lest she cry, and we are standing behind the same apron.
I think of her sometimes. I hope she’s well.
I work at a vet clinic now. This is somebody’s dream, but not mine. As I brush the extractions off of the dental cleaning towels, I remember a girl in fourth grade who told me about the alien encounter that took her neighbor’s dog, but left its teeth all in a row. I spilled this to my mom on the ride home, aghast. But I was getting old, and the day was getting long.
“You don’t believe in aliens, though, do you?” she asked.
“No.” I replied hollowly, because it didn’t make it better.
A girl told me tales and watched me squirm and cry wolf all through elementary. Until finally, I didn’t.  I didn’t. I bit back the scariest; then in spite these spilled suddenly, having soured. Adults talked to adults. They told me she made stories about herself, for attention. Send her to us, but don’t believe her.
In secret I tried to cry for the wolves only I could see.
But I was getting old, the day was getting long, and I was hollow. And surely, I didn’t believe.
I think of her sometimes. I hope she made it.
I take the towels and balance them in my hand, and with the other, turn the knob and press myself into the humid air of the laundry room. I can feel the displacement. Every door you walk through, you know, squishes a you-shaped amount of air back in your stead.
I pour the laundry detergent onto the circle of soft hills and valleys and something in the pattern reminds me of the girl I once was. One who ate her cereal pieces by category, minded shadows, and picked at her face too much. She balked at all the traditional superstitions, but secretly made up her own, lest stepping out of line now would trip her up later.
I think of her sometimes, and I mourn.
I remember I once read an inspirational magazine article – the writer recounted a time when she noticed a package of toilet paper promising 250 sheets, and set herself the task of counting them. At the bottom of a pile of 250 unwound toilet paper sheets, she claimed to find a renewed faith in the world. Something to believe in.
I think of her every single time I hold a sheet of toilet paper shorter than it is wide.
I must confess, I do not wish her well.
At the end of the day, I retire to the garden. The sunflowers, tomatoes, and climbing vines are all taller than me. When I am surely shrouded, and my legs are properly clad in dirt, I approach a dozen corn stalks. I lift my eyes to this one. Against the golden-hour sky, her leaves are dark in shadow. Bees trace halos around her tassel, a full jump above an arm above my head.
“Do you believe in ghosts?” she whispers.
And I do, because somehow this is the ruby of the dozen Glass Gem variety corn kernels I held in my hand last April, and buried two knuckles down.
A technicolor cob of her siblings remains on the top shelf of my closet, most never to taste rain or sun.
I ate sweet corn for dinner; I devoured a whispering field. I had to.
Isn’t it so different? We laugh lest we cry. We shed years in secret, and we make stories. We make stories. We make stories – sooner than taxes, sooner than death.
In order to haunt this Earth, you see, you don’t have to die.

The Importance of Flossing
The first time that Dean noticed it was when he handed Cas a beer in the bunker’s kitchen when they just had come back from a hunt. Cas didn’t do as he usually did, immediately tipping the bottle back and taking a long pull. That meant that Dean wasn’t able to indulge in one of his favorite hobbies, staring at Cas’ long neck while he was busy drinking. He’d always appreciated a good-looking neck, and Cas’ really was something else. So he had a bit of a neck kink? Sue him, there wasn’t anything wrong with that. You know, apart from the awkwardness that came when you constantly ogled your friend. Your very, very good looking, now human friend.
“Cas, you okay there, buddy? If you don’t want the beer I can take the bottle to Sammy instead.”
“No. Thank you, Dean. I assure you that I am quite well” he said and took a small sip of his beer. Dean felt a bit robbed of his neck staring opportunity, but then he saw Cas flinch at the coldness of the beverage.
Dean didn’t really think more about Cas’ reaction until a few days later when he passed him a steaming cup of coffee at breakfast. Cas recoiled again. Then Dean saw it happen over and over again in the days that followed. Cas hissed when he drank his tea. Cas turned down an offer of getting ice cream, and he never said no to ice cream. Cas almost screamed when Sam gave him some Sour Patch Kids.
At dinner the same night Sam had given him the candy, Dean realized that Cas seemed to only chew his food using only the left side of his mouth.
When they had finished eating and Dean had cleaned up in the kitchen, he went to Cas’ room and knocked on his door.
“Come in” came the deep response. Dean opened the door and stepped inside. Cas sat on his bed, a book in his hand.
“Hey, Cas. Just wanted to ask you something.”
“Of course, Dean.”
Dean walked up to the bed and perched on the edge of it, near Cas’ feet.
“So, uh, you seem to have been in a bit of pain lately.” Cas squinted at him.
“You don’t have to deny it. I’ve... I’ve seen you eat and drink these past few days.” Dean tried to will his blushing away, now was really not the time to think about Cas’ neck again.
“Ah yes. My mouth has been oddly painful recently.”
“Yeah, about that. I have an idea why that might be. Remember when you fell, and we talked about the importance of dental hygiene? I taught you how to brush your teeth.” Cas nodded. Dean continued. “Well, did we ever get to why flossing is good for you?”
Cas tilted his head, looking more confused than Dean had seen him in a long time. “Flossing? Like the dance? What does that have to do with my teeth?”
Dean barked out a laugh. “What? No dumbass, not like the dance. How do you even know about that?”
“One of Claire’s friends showed me. It’s actually rather fun when you understand how to do it.”
“Man, what I wouldn’t have paid to see that” Dean muttered to himself, shaking his head, still smiling down at the floor. “No, this kind of flossing is when you pull a piece of string between your teeth to remove the gunk that gathers between them because the toothbrush can’t reach everywhere. You see, you gotta do that every day now that you can’t mojo yourself all clean and spiffy anymore”
Dean took Cas to the bathroom and demonstrated. Cas grimaced and the floss came away bloody. Dean winced. “I think you probably have a cavity or two. Or at least some gingivitis. I’ll call the dentist tomorrow.”
The following morning Dean called the dentist and luckily, they got an appointment the same afternoon. After lunch Dean drove them into town in the Impala. They stepped into the dentist’s office and walked up to the receptionist. Dean tried to give her a winning smile.
“Hi. We got an appointment now at two-thirty. Cas, uh, Castiel Winchester.”
“Certainly. I’ll just let them know that you are here” She hurried away and returned with a nurse.
“Castiel? Nice to meet you. If you’d come with me this way, please.”
Cas turned to Dean, looking worried. “You’ll be fine, Cas. I’ll just wait here then, I’ll see you when you’re done.”
They disappeared.
Dean had hardly had time to sit down in an armchair and pick up an old car magazine to flick through while he waited before the nurse came running back into the waiting room.
“Mr. Winchester! You need to speak to your husband!” She turned and ran back the way she had come.
Dean felt himself go red. His husband? He hadn’t really thought about the implications when he had booked the appointment and stated that it was for Castiel Winchester, but it wasn’t like Cas had a last name, so giving his own had seemed like the only option. Shaking himself out of his stupor, he got up and followed the nurse.
When Dean got to the room, Cas and the dentist stood on different sides of it, glaring at each other. The dentist was clutching at her hand.
“Dean. This woman is dangerous! She has weapons and she tried to use them on me.”
“He bit me!”
Dean blinked a couple of times, trying to process the strange situation. “Sorry about that. I’ll talk to him” he said to the dentist. He turned to Cas and lowered his voice “Cas, come on, man. We talked about this, about what happens at the dentist’s.”
Cas stared grumpily at him. “I don’t like it.”
“No one likes it. Will you be all right if I stay here with you?”
Cas nodded.
“Is that okay?” he asked the nurse. She nodded and brought him a stool so that he could sit next to the patient’s chair.
“Cas, come on, angel, get back in the chair.” Cas climbed back, while the dentist put a bandaid on her hand. When she turned around, Dean thought that Cas looked so small and frightened in that big chair that he acted on instinct, taking Cas’ slightly clammy hand in his own.
Half an hour later, they walked back into the waiting room, still hand in hand. The dentist had removed one of Cas’ teeth, fixed cavities in two others, and then thoroughly cleaned his teeth. Cas had gotten a new appointment in a couple of weeks to get a replacement tooth put in. Dean was really glad that he had brought several of their old fraudulent credit cards. This was going to be expensive, it wasn’t like you could get health insurance as a hunter.
When he handed one of the cards over to the receptionist to pay for the visit, Cas still clung to him, staring at him. He did seem to be a little out of it. Maybe the pain killers the dentist had given him before the extraction had hit him harder than Dean thought?
“Dean, how are you so pretty? You have so many freckles! I’m going to count them now!”
Right. Cas wasn’t just a little out of it, he was a lot out of it. Dean flushed and the receptionist giggled as she handed him the receipt.
“Okay, let’s get you home, you weirdo.”
They turned to the elevator, the receptionist was still giggling, and Cas was still trying to count Dean’s freckles. Dean sighed. He was just happy that Sam wasn’t there, he would have laughed himself to an aneurysm by now. Cas had lost track of his counting while walking and was now pouting. Dean placed a hand on the small of his back and steered him into the elevator, he refused to look at Cas.
When they stepped out onto the street, Dean realized that Cas had been strangely quiet for someone who was trying to count someone else’s freckles. He looked at Cas who made some very weird facial expressions, it looked almost like he was trying to lick his own teeth.
“Cas? What are you doing?”
“Dean. Dean, my teeth. They are so smooth! Sooo smooth. You should feel them!”
And before he could realize what was happening, Cas threw himself at Dean, pressing his lips against Dean’s. He had rarely felt so shocked in his life, this was very far from all the scenarios he had dreamed about when thinking about kissing Cas for the first time. While his body didn’t want anything other than to respond to Cas’ soft lips, there was still a part of his brain that knew that this was wrong right now. It felt like he’d never done anything so difficult as to pull away from Cas’ persistent kiss.
“Whoa! Whoa there! While I absolutely love what’s happening here, I’m not gonna kiss you when you’re this loopy. Let’s do it for real instead when you’re back to being your sane self again. Okay?” He looked down at Cas and added “or as sane as you usually are anyway.”
He finally managed to get them both into the Impala. The ride home was silent.
When they at last pulled into the bunker’s garage, Dean parked and got out of the car. He walked around to the passenger’s seat and opened the door, waiting for Cas to step out. Cas did so and then he stood very still looking down at the floor, opening and closing his mouth a few times.
“Thank you for coming with me, Dean. I appreciate it.”
“Of course, Cas. Are you back to being yourself now?”
Cas nodded. “Yes. I believe so.”
“Good.” He stepped into Cas’ space and pulled him flush against himself. He pushed Cas against the side of the Impala and kissed him. Their lips moved against each other, and when their mouths opened, Dean couldn’t help but laugh into the kiss. Cas had been right.
His teeth were really smooth.

Viral Wisdom
Summary: When Peter’s dentist decides the kid’s impacted wisdom teeth need to go, Tony offers to have the surgery done at the compound. Honestly, Peter is looking forward to it. After all, he’s seen the viral videos—he’s pretty sure he knows what to expect.
What could possibly go wrong?

“You’ve gotta video it, Mr. Stark,” Peter says between bites of the pizza he’s currently wolfing down as part of what he and Tony have jokingly dubbed ‘The Last Supper’. The kid will be getting all four of his wisdom teeth removed at eight o’clock sharp the next morning, and being a teenage boy with an absurdly fast enhanced metabolism means Peter has decided the twelve-hour mandatory fasting period before surgery will be the worst part of the whole procedure.
Tony raises his eyebrows in mock offense. “Oh I’ve gotta, do I?”
Peter grins. “Yup,” he says, popping the ‘p’. “It’s gonna be awesome. Ned’s cousin got hers out last December, and when she woke up she was so high from the anesthesia that she started accusing the dentist of stealing her teeth and selling them to the tooth fairy on the black market.” He sticks the last bite of his pizza slice in his mouth. “Her mom filmed it and the video went like, viral.”
“You know,” Tony remarks. “Hate to burst your bubble, kid, but I got my wisdom teeth out during my senior year at MIT and I don’t remember anything like this happening. Just a lot of eating applesauce and mashed potatoes while resembling Alvin the Chipmunk.”
“No, no it’s a thing,” Peter insists. “These videos are like, everywhere. I saw this one where this lady woke up and forgot she was married but suddenly noticed her wedding ring and started freaking out, thinking her husband had just proposed. But they had been married already for like, three years.”
Shaking his head, Tony huffs. “You are literally a superhero with a secret identity and you think it’s a good idea to get wildly high on medication and then have me film whatever crap comes out of your mouth so you can post it on, what, Facebook?”
“Ha, Facebook,” Peter snorts as he reaches for another slice. “Good one, Mr. Stark. No one uses Facebook anymore.”
X
The next morning, Peter’s not looking quite as excited as he was the previous night. He sits beside Tony in a plastic chair just inside the compound’s Medbay, anxiously texting back and forth with Ned as they wait for the SHIELD appointed oral surgeon and his assistant to finish prepping the procedure room.
When Peter’s dentist decided several weeks back that the impacted teeth had to go, Tony and May agreed it would have to be done at the compound. Peter’s enhanced physiology means that the dosage of anesthesia required to put him out could also take down a moderately-sized elephant. HIPAA protection or not, Tony would rather not have any raised eyebrows from standard medical professionals.
“You hanging in there?” Tony asks casually. The kid’s foot hasn’t stopped tapping once since they sat down and he’s wondering if Peter’s beginning to regret telling May he’d be fine doing this solo while she’s at work. “Ready to make, what is it then, Vine history?”
That remark elicits a short laugh from Peter. “Vine’s dead, Mr. Stark,” he informs. “It was the true tragedy of this generation.”
Tony sighs, exasperated. “Is it YouTube then? Reddit?”
Peter just shrugs. “Something like that.” His gaze lowers back to his lap and he fires off another text to Ned.
FRIDAY’s voice comes over the speakers, so sudden that it startles the kid and nearly causes him to drop the phone: “Dr. Jacobson is ready for you now, Peter.”
“Oh. Already? Wow, okay,” Peter babbles. “Not even 8:00 yet, no need to rush...” he complains as he pockets the phone.
Tony checks his watch. “It’s 7:58, kid,” he scoffs, getting to his feet. “Perks of being the only patient in the building.”
After a second’s hesitation, Peter stands as well and Tony frowns at the shakiness he observes. “You good?” he checks, lightly gripping the kid’s elbow just in case he decides to channel his inner Victorian lady. “I know your blood sugar’s gotta be low, but I promise, as soon as this is over, it’s all the ice cream and pudding you want.”
“Oh, yeah, that’ll be good,” Peter says half-heartedly.
Tony gives his back a little prod to encourage him toward the door. “C’mon kid. Let’s get a move on. Upward and onward and all that jazz...”
Swallowing hard, Peter begins shuffling forward with Tony guiding him along. “So, I’ve never, um, actually had anesthesia before,” he admits. “And, like, what if something… goes wrong?"
Tony softens, for the first time seeing the actual fear lurking beneath Peter’s façade. “Don’t worry—these guys know what they’re doing,” he assures, giving the kid’s shoulder a squeeze. “You’re gonna be fine.”
Lips pursed, Peter nods a few times. “Yeah. Yeah of course. Okay. I guess I’ll just, go on back there and, uh...“
“Do you want me to stay until they put you under?” Tony offers.
A look of relief instantly washes over Peter and he nods vigorously before stopping to quickly add in a tone of forced nonchalance, “But like, only if you don’t mind.”
Tony chuckles. “I think I can swing it.”
X
The IV placement is a little rough. Peter’s never been a fan of needles, but Tony distracts him by telling him to close his eyes and recite the second row of the periodic table. Once the saline is flowing, the assistant places an oxygen cannula under his nose.
Peter glances up at the dentist. “So, have you ever had someone say something, like, really inappropriate when they wake up?” he asks.
Jacobson chuckles drily. “Oh yes. I actually have a very amusing anecdote about that.”
Both Tony and Peter look at him expectantly, but the doctor just continues preparing his instruments.
“So, uh, what happened?” Peter asks finally.
Jacobson’s eyes narrow. “That is confidential information.”
Peter blinks at him. “Oh. Uh, of course.”
While the surgeon moves over to grab something from the counter, the assistant—a woman probably in her early thirties whose name badge reads ‘Megan’—gives a small laugh. “Don’t worry,” she says. “It can’t make you say anything you weren’t already thinking on some level.”
Peter gulps. “Great.” Turning to Tony, he says, “Uh, you know, on second thought, maybe we don’t need this on video…”
Tony huffs out a laugh. “Oh no, no take backs. In about an hour, you’ll be trending on Twitter. Or wherever the hell this is going.”
Before Peter can say anything, Megan gives a warning of, “Alright, here we go.” Then she injects the anesthesia into the IV port.
The effect is nearly instantaneous. “Whoa…” Peter mutters, shooting his mentor a nervous look. “Feels… weird.”
“You’re fine, Pete,” Tony promises. “I’ll be waiting right outside until you wake up.”
“Yeah…” he breathes out, eyelids drooping. “And ’s’goin’ on Instagram, Mr. Stark…”
A few moments later, the kid is out.
X
“Boss, the surgery is complete,” FRIDAY’s voice comes over the speakers in the waiting area. “The extractions went well. Peter has just regained consciousness and has been transferred to the recovery area.”
“Thanks, FRI.” Getting to his feet from the plastic chair, Tony closes out of the Minesweeper app on his phone and opens the camera one instead. “Guess it’s showtime…”
Already filming, Tony pushes open the door and makes his way back to the small room off to the side of the procedure area. Peter is sitting propped up on a cot as Megan drapes a blanket over him. Tightly rolled wads of cotton are sticking out of his mouth and his eyes are droopy and unfocused.
The assistant gives Tony a small smile. “He did great,” she assures in a quiet voice. “We’ll be right in the other room cleaning up if you need anything.”
“Thanks,” Tony tells her before turning his attention back to Peter and pulling up one of the stools to sit on. “Hey kid,” he greets. “How’s life with four gaping holes in your face?”
“Uhhh… M’s’r St’rk?” Peter manages to mumble, blinking a few times.
“The one and only,” Tony replies, his camera still trained on the kid. “Any dental conspiracy theories you wanna share with the audience? Declarations of affection you care to make?”
Peter’s face screws up into a weak sort of frown. “Wha…?”
Tony shakes his head slowly, chuckling to himself. “See, what’d I tell you, kid? Anesthesia just isn’t that exciting.”
“Uhhgg…” Peter groans, blinking again. The kid’s expression of utter confusion coupled with his already swelling cheeks is honestly adorable. “I-I don’t… I feel weird, I…”
Smirking, Tony focuses the camera a little closer on Peter’s face, ready to film whatever drug-induced ramblings pour forth from the kid’s lips.
But then all of a sudden, he’s watching tears well up in Peter’s eyes.
Tony’s grin falters. “Pete?”
“Oh god…” Peter draws in a shuddering breath, which comes back out in a choked sob. “I-I didn’... I can’t… I don’ like this...”
All traces of humor immediately dissolve from Tony. “Whoa, hey, you’re alright,” he says. As Peter continues to cry, Tony turns off the camera and shoves the phone back into his jacket pocket. Scooting closer to the bed, he takes the kid’s hand. “You’re fine, you’re okay.”
“I-I don’ feel... I, uh...” Peter chokes out between sobs. A bloody wad of cotton falls out of his mouth, which only causes him to cry harder. “Wh-Why ’m I bleedin’?” he cries.
“You just had a few teeth out, no biggie,” Tony assures. He grabs a fresh cotton roll from the table and sticks it in the kid’s mouth. “You’re fine, bud, I promise.”
Still crying, Peter manages to spit out, “Am I... is this… real?”
Tony’s heart clenches, going back to Titan, back to Peter being trapped for five years in some kind of altered state of consciousness. He’s kicking himself for not having realized sooner that something like this might freak him out.
“Ah, kid…” Tony sighs. “Yes, this is real. You’re real. You’re right here with me,” he promises, rubbing his hand up and down over the kid’s arm.
Suddenly Peter’s breath hitches in his throat. “‘m gonna throw up,” he chokes out.
The warning is immediately followed by an unproductive gag. Tony mutters a curse, jumping up and grabbing a plastic emesis basin from the counter. He barely manages to get it under Peter’s chin before the kid makes good on his threat.
“Hey, hey, easy, easy...” Tony says, switching to hold the bin with one hand and place the other on Peter’s back. He winces in sympathy at the bloody cotton and red-tinged strings of bile Peter is spitting out between sobs; he can only imagine how much that has to hurt. “FRIDAY, can you get the doc back in here?” he asks in a low voice.
Pulling in a shuddering breath, Peter glances up from the basin, eyes wide and fearful. “I th-threw up b-blood,” he whimpers, horrified. “...’m I dyin’?”
Aw fuck. “No, no of course not. It’s just from your mouth,” Tony explains, much more calmly than he feels.
The door reopens and Megan is the first to enter. She gives Peter a sympathetic smile as she steps into the room. The surgeon appears a few steps behind, looking totally unfazed by the teary, vomiting teen in the chair before him.
“Ah,” he says with a nod. His tone is factual, though not unkind. “We have a crier.”
“This just happens sometimes, nothing to worry about,” Megan quickly assures. She takes the bin from Tony and hands him an empty one before carefully wiping the tears and vomit off Peter’s face with a paper towel. “Anesthesia can have all kinds of different effects on people.”
Jacobson hums in agreement as he checks Peter’s mouth to ensure his stitches are still holding before giving him fresh gauze to stem the bleeding. The tears have stopped now and embarrassment seems to be rapidly replacing fear as the kid’s primary emotion. Unsure of what else to do, Tony just continues rubbing Peter’s back.
“Everything looks fine,” Jacobson concludes after a moment of looking him over. “You can take him back upstairs now. He’ll probably feel calmer once he’s in a familiar setting.”
Tony doesn’t need to be told twice. “Sounds good,” he says, grabbing the paper Megan hands him with the discharge instructions as he helps Peter to his feet. “Alright bud,” he says quietly. “Let’s blow this popsicle stand.”
X
After getting Peter situated on the couch in the common area, Tony heads to the kitchen and returns with a tray of soft food selections to offer the kid.
“What are you feeling?” he asks, pointing to each food in turn. “Yogurt? Ice cream? Applesauce? Pudding?”
Peter blinks twice at him. “...Butterscotch puddin’?” he asks hopefully.
Tony scoffs. “No, because I’m not eighty. I’ve got chocolate or vanilla.”
“Oh.” Peter’s face falls. “Don’ want anythin’ then…”
“Nope, not an option,” Tony declares. “You have to take your super spidey-kid painkillers soon and I don’t want them to make you sick.”
“But I ‘ready got sick…” Peter moans.
“And it wasn’t fun, was it?” Tony reasons. “Which is why we’re trying to avoid that.”
“But ‘m not hungry…” Peter whines, turning his head away from his mentor to face the cushion, causing the ice pack to side down from his cheek. “Jus’ wanna sleep…”
Tony peels the lid off one of the vanilla pudding cups and scoops up a spoonful. “C’mon, Pete.” He says, holding it in front of the kid’s closed mouth. “You’re not gonna make me do the airplane thing, are you? Because I will definitely be filming that.”
“Uhhh… no...” Peter groans, finally taking the spoon from him. “No more internet…”
X
It’s been several hours now since Tony managed to bully the kid into choking down enough pudding to take his meds before letting him fall asleep. Aside from the obvious swelling, Peter’s looking far better for having had the nap.
“How are you feeling now?” Tony asks, handing Peter a fresh ice pack.
Peter accepts it from him and presses it to his comically large cheek. “Mortified,” he mumbles. “This is so not going on Instagram…”
Tony huffs out a laugh. “I don’t know, maybe it should. Like a PSA of sorts for all the kids out there looking to be the next viral sensation.”
“Wonderful,” Peter mutters, rolling his eyes.
Tony pats him on the shoulder. “You know, while you were out, I was looking up some of those videos you mentioned. I see the attraction. Did you watch the one where the black med student called pickled eggs a ‘hood snack’?”
Peter nods.
“Or the red-haired teenager who woke up thinking he was a gangster in Dubai?” Tony goes on.
“Classic,” Peter mutters.
“Or the girl who wanted to go swimming in the painting on the office wall so she could see the fishes?”
Peter waves a hand dismissively. “Yeah, yeah…”
“I’m telling you kid, I think there’s a market here…”
X
It’s two days later that Tony finally breaks down and shows the kid the video Rhodey took of him back in ‘87, burned directly off the VHS into FRIDAY’s archives:
A teenage Tony Stark sits on the floor of his dorm room, slumped against a twin-sized mattress. His cheeks are swollen to twice their usual size and drool is running down his chin onto the graph paper notebook he’s scribbling feverishly into.
“Tony, you gotta eat something so you can take your meds, dude,” Rhodey’s voice comes over the recording from off-screen.
“Go ‘way…” Tony groans, waving him off irritably. “‘m busy solvin’ th’… prob’em…”
Rhodey breathes out a heavy sigh. “Okay, for the last time, you can’t ‘solve’ the second law of thermodynamics.” He pauses for a beat. “Especially with a purple crayon.”
Tony looks up at him, eyes unfocused, and gives an almost evil grin. “Maybe you can’t but… I’m… ‘m’ really smart…” He blinks twice, then giggles. “m’ Tony Fuckin’ Stark…”
“Yeah, yeah, and Tony Fucking Stark needs to take his meds...” Rhodey mutters. “So what’s it gonna be, dude? Yogurt or applesauce?”
Tony’s face screws up in apparent thought before he mumbles, “A cheese’urger,” he decides. “Then I solve… gravity.”

This post is actually a lot later than I originally wanted, but I guess it’s good that I waited just to be 100% sure that everything was alright. This is going to hopefully be my last dental post until sometime next year when I decide to get my implant placed.
So in my last post, I spoke about how one of my crown preps and temps were giving me trouble. It never settled while I had it in. I ended up calling the dentist again, but on that same day my permanent crowns came in. So instead of making two separate trips, I scheduled to be seen the next day. I actually went into the back by myself, which I was proud of. The assistant began by asking me a few questions, especially about the tooth that was bothering me. She did removed the temps and would you know the one that was bothering me was barely glued on to the tooth. It literally popped off with her just touching it. She said it was probably rocking back and forth each time I would chew and would cause discomfort. She cleaned off some of the temporary cement and took some x-ray while we waited for the dentist to come in.
The next part was probably the most uncomfortable. I was told I could be numbed if I wanted, but I took some Tylenol before I went, so I decided to tough it out. My dentist took this time to examine my teeth (which he assured me there was nothing wrong and my permanents would resolve the issue), make sure everything was cleaned off of them, and took many many bite adjustments for each side and then both together. After that, one final cleanup happened to make sure my teeth were free of debris. The cool air and water touching my “naked” teeth gave me some shivers, but I powered through. He then packed my mouth with these long cotton pieces which kept my tongue out of the way and prevented me from producing saliva. The next part went really fast as I was told because the cement sets quickly. They put on the permanent crowns with the cement, cleaned off the excess around my gums, and made me bite down on some cotton.
You know what? He was right. No more biting pain! I felt this wave of instant relief wash over me. My dentist inspected me once more and told me if I had ANY discomfort or concerns to call the next day because he’d want to see me. The remainder of my time there was spent with the hygienist who cleaned out the remainder of the cement between my teeth and made sure my margins looked good (the part where your tooth meets your gums). We talked about TV shows and I found out her and her husband are huge fans of The Office. I told her she motivated me to watch it, so I think it will be a good nighttime show to watch. After that, I was able to inspect my crowns, which I was shocked at how amazing they look. They look super natural and so much better than those large silver fillings I once had. I honestly don’t feel a difference between my real teeth and the crowns which are nice. To celebrate, that night I ate… yes… chicken tenders. I know, I probably should have, BUT I was so excited to be able to eat solid foods again that I couldn’t contain my excitement.
So far it’s been weeks since they were placed, and I’m very happy with them. If you need a crown, definitely don’t be scared about it. Yes they are expensive, but I think they are definitely worth it to protect your tooth. There are a few different types of materials, but mine are made of ceramic/porcelain. Every once in a while my mouth still gets a little tender, so I take some ibuprofen, but nothing has been super painful. I have to remember, this was all done in a few months, so of course I’m still in an adjustment and healing phase. So I thought you might like to see the final tally of things. This was no means cheap, and I do have a dental plan through Cigna. Without it, it would have been almost 2-3k more.

Missing Pieces, part 4
Welcome back. When last you were here, Evain crashed Pam’s birthday and Yova tried to kiss a ghost. Onward.
A few days after we dealt with the Shepherd of Lonely Roads and felt secure in Pam’s daughter not being at any risk, we all managed to stumble into our next bit of trouble. Yova wasn’t there, but I’m going to blame her for it anyway. You see, it all started on the day she was going to take Marigold out to lunch for their first date. Day had been trying to get a private investigator business up and running and was off doing something for that, but Pam, Bella, and I were all extremely interested in what Yova was getting up to. So we decided to spy on her date. Clearly, it was all her fault for going out when nothing was on TV.
Also, around the time I knew she was getting ready to leave for her date, I sent Paisley flying up to Yova’s balcony with a dental dam. She sent Paisley back with an elegantly written scorcher of a note thanking me for my concern about her health and promising to return the favor and I laughed and laughed and laughed and felt my insides burn with the kind of glee that can come only from Satan.
I knew Yova was planning to take Marigold to a classy bistro maybe fifteen minutes’ walk from our apartment building. So beforehand, Pam, Bella, and I showed up and grabbed a table in the corner nearest the door. We were all very subtly wearing giant sunglasses and scarves and hiding behind menus. Amazingly, Yova and Marigold didn’t seem to notice us and were taken to a table more in the back, where Yova immediately started turning on the charm and Marigold was looking delighted at how Yova was sweeping her off her feet.
Unfortunately, that’s about when the trouble started. Bella was the one who first noticed the guy – a man standing across the street, staring very intently at our table. She wasn’t able to place her finger on where she’d seen his face before, but when she pointed him out to us, I had a moment of horrible recollection: the skin tone was slightly different and he didn’t have a mohawk, but otherwise he looked exactly like Buck, one of the loyalists who’d captured us and taken us to Arcadia in the first place.
I was confused for a second, because we should easily have been able to see through his mask to what his mien was. Pam reminded me that it was possible to spend Glamour to hid your mien, which we figured he was doing so he could remain incognito. Our attention was completely distracted from Marigold and Yova and we started trying to figure out what he was doing and why he would be staring at us. We saw him taking down a lot of notes, then shutting his notebook in a huff, stretching, and starting to walk down toward a bus stop.
We sprang into action. I paid the waitress for our drinks and Pam and Bella headed out to intercept him. Pam managed to distract him by talking to him and asking for directions (leaning very heavily on the Minnesota accent), while Bella slipped into invisibility to try and lift his notes. Since Buck was responsible for me getting captured, I decided to hang out on the patio of the bistro and run after him, if need be. Pam was able to keep him awkwardly engaged where he wasn’t able to end the conversation and leave while Bella slipped up behind him to grab his notepad. And continued being the least stealthy Darkling that has ever walked the face of the planet, as she missed and he felt the pull on his bag. He turned and started looking at Bella, who was materializing out of nowhere. Thankfully, as he adjusted his bag, she was able to grab the notebook and run. He took off running in the opposite direction, which is when I sprang into action.
Bella had a lot of people staring at her because she suddenly appeared out of nowhere. As she ran in the opposite direction of Buck, she started screaming, “Student film! Don’t worry! Everything’s fine!” Pam managed to save the day by starting to clap and getting others clapping, even though they were confused. Once Bella found a place to hide, she read through the notes and saw it was mostly a list of places and times. It didn’t take her long to realize they were places she’d specifically been, as well as notes on her preferred forms of transportation. Tucked in the back was an envelope with a red wax seal that had a skull with no eye sockets and a dagger slicing through the side of the skull. (Yeah, real subtle.) After struggling with the seal mightily for a few minutes, she managed to use all her rock-extracting force to get it open. The letter was complete gibberish that she couldn’t make heads or tails of.
In the other direction, I kept hot pursuit of Buck, who was looking really weirded out at me chasing him. He rounded a corner into an alley and I followed him, cornering him. “Hey, buddy, how’s it going?” I asked him. He looked like he wanted to retort something but was at a complete loss for words. I asked if he was Buck and he scoffed, “Well, if you already know it, there’s no point in denying it.” I asked if he recognized me and he squinted at me, saying maybe, but that he couldn’t place me. As he was doing this, I spotted him eyeing a window that had a dim reflection in it. He bit the inside of his cheek, winced, and spat blood in his hand. I realized at the last second what he was about to do and as he jumped forward, reaching out with his hand, I leapt and kicked out the window, shattering it. I have literally never felt more badass in my whole entire life.
“Fuck!” he yelled. “Nah, not right now,” I said. He facepalmed and I told him that he should remember me because of a bark and dried leaf canape. He squinted again and said, “Oh, yeaaaah! You know, that was Aurora’s idea. I thought it was kind of stupid, but it worked!” He swore that he wasn’t working for Scathach anymore, or for any of the Fae. “I’m in new work now, doing surveillance.” But when I asked him who he was working for, he wouldn’t tell me. I decided to take the honey-over-vinegar approach, offering to put in a good word for him with the freehold if he was willing to talk about what he knows. He seemed to consider this for a second, then rejected it, saying that he’d done too much for them to ever take him in.
Pam showed up around this time and I caught her up on what was going on. Faced with the two of us, Buck finally admitted he was working for a group called the Knights of the Widow’s Walk, who aren’t affiliated with the freehold. I asked why they wanted to know about us, and he couldn’t say because the missions weren’t always wordy. He started digging around in his messenger bag and his eyes got wide. After a second, he yelled, “Shit, my envelope! That little goth freak got it!” He looked up at us and told us he’d find us to get it back and stormed off. Pam and I looked at each other with a shrug. As much as we didn’t want to let him go, he at least didn’t seem to be an immediate threat, so we met back up with Bella.
As we were walking down to where Bella ran to, I heard a voice say, “Hey. Hey, you, tall guy. With the pretty lady. I got the good shit,” and a set of pastel-painted fingernails emerged from the shadows, waving the notebook. “Who, me? My mother always told me not to buy anything from disembodied voices,” I said. Bella slipped out of the shadows and showed us the letter. Pam and I looked at it and we quickly realized it was a cypher of some sort, a message where the letters all stand in for another letter. It would take some time to crack, but we would have to do it eventually, so we went back to my apartment to sit down and try to solve it.
As we got home, I saw that Yova’s crappy pickup was in the parking lot, though given how close the bistro was, that wasn’t any guarantee that she and Marigold were there. I woke Paisley up from her nap and asked if she’d be willing to flit up to Yova’s balcony and see if they were there. She gave me the most indignant expression I’ve ever gotten from a gecko and flew over to her box, settling in and closing her eyes. “Paisley. I’ll make you an extra batch of crickers,” I promised. She raised her head slightly, eyeing me. “With extra ground crickets on top, mixed with sea salt?” I asked. She turned her head and settled in, not having anything to do with it. “Paisley. Paisley!” I said. “This is the unkindest cut of all. What have I ever done to you but love you and feed you and clean out your little box?” She flicked her tail dismissively and that was the end of that.
We settled around my table with a bowl of popcorn and some apple cider. I put The Great British Bake Off on in the background and we set to work on trying to crack the cypher. It took us a solid two hours to do so, but we eventually did, getting the following message:
“I am assuming, my knight, that you have successfully captured your quarry. For that I must commend you. Helldivers are a slippery lot, though I trust the manacles I sent along with the first part of this mission made it significantly easier. They should keep our friend from activating her blessing. I do hope you remembered to wear gloves while touching them. It is imperative that you do not speak with the Helldiver on your own. Do not speak with her at all. Your mission is only to capture and keep her until the Larger Threat has been neutralized. Once this has been done, a more seasoned Knight will come to retrieve her. You will know his coming by the phrase, ‘I say three times, your mission is complete.’ You will receive further instructions after the completion of this task. The Courier will meet you at the usual location.”
Bella, understandably enough, was starting to freak out at this and Pam gave her a reassuring hug. After we cracked the code, we looked back through Buck’s notebook to see what we could understand from his notes. We realized that there were specific notes when she was “with the Big Guy” and “not with the Big Guy.” I wondered if it was the creepshow who was trying to distill their essences back in the Goblin Market – it was the two of them who were captured and he did know Bella was a Helldiver from seeing her silver string. I sent Day a text, warning him about it and telling him to get in touch with us when he could.
Bella was definitely shaken, functional but not feeling great. We agreed that she and Pam could stay at my place for the meantime, and she got in touch with Duke Lamington, Mistress Lilly’s second in command, who told her that if she needed to, she could safely stay at a B&B the Spring Court owned. We all agreed that the Courts would want to know about a former loyalist spying on members of the freehold, so I called Stella, who was the most prominent Autumn courtier I’d been in regular contact with. Her voicemail was typically brusque: “You’ve reached Stella. Leave a message, and if it’s important, I’ll return your call.” So I, being the petty bastard I am, decided to leave her a masterclass in passive-aggressive voicemails.
“Hi, Stella, it’s Derek. I don’t know if this is important enough, but we just ran into a former loyalist who’s been watching Bella like a hawk, saying that he works for some group called the Knights of the Widow’s Walk, and I thought the Court would probably want to know about it. Like I said, don’t know if it matters, but if it does, here’s my number so you can call me back. Bye!” About thirty minutes later, I got a call back. When I picked up, before I could even say hello, I just heard her yelling, “COURT HALL NOW,” and disconnecting. I hung up, looked at Pam and Bella, and said, “She thinks it’s important.”
I activated my Mirror Walk contract (after the bathroom mirror incident when I brought the others to the Autumn lodge, I bought a full-length mirror from IKEA for my bedroom) and took Pam and Bella through. This was the first time Bella had been in the Autumn lodge, and she sadly didn’t look too impressed. “I’m glad I didn’t choose Autumn. This doesn’t go with my aesthetic,” she said. Stella was sitting by the giant fireplace in the foyer with ramrod straight posture, and I couldn’t help but notice the other courtiers were giving her a wide berth. She invited us to sit and apologized for her tone on the phone, explaining she was shocked. As we sat, she was staring straight at Bella, causing Bella to squirm. She said, “There’s no nice way of asking this, so I’ll apologize in advance. But if there is anything you have ever said, thought, or communicated that might indicate you are in league with the Gentry, I need to know that now.” Bella told her that she’d never even considered it and when Stella asked me for my opinion, I backed that up.
Stella seemed to relax slightly at that and said, “Then I’ll chalk this up to misinformed prejudice.” She looked at me and said, “As I’m sure you are aware, my – our – court isn’t exactly looking well right now with the incident at the Harvest Fair, so I would appreciate if you handle this matter with some discretion. If the Knights are operating within the freehold, then there is a loyalist somewhere. They believe it’s Bella. You seem to believe it is not and I am willing to risk trusting your judgment this once.” She explained that Helldivers aren’t common outside Arcadia because they’re often spies for the Gentry, easily pulled back by their silver thread. Because we could see that Bella’s thread was broken, we knew she was free from her Keeper, but external eyes might not be able to see that so clearly.
Stella told us that the Knights of the Widow’s Walk are an independent changeling organization dedicated to rooting out and identifying loyalists, so if they were here, then there had to be a loyalist in the freehold. She told us that we really had only three options: either find the loyalist, try to speak with the Knights ourselves, or keep running. She said she was going to conduct her own investigation and asked that we do anything we were interested in subtly. I offered to pass information we found along to her subtly and she excused herself to make the council aware of what was going on.
Pam and Bella decided to sit down by the fire for a minute and figure out what our next move was. I excused myself, telling them I had an important collaborative research matter to attend to. Which I did. It was collaborative and it did involve research. There were a few Autumn courtiers who had requested certain information from me, and I knew that I could pass that information along and it would get to the right ears. I only found one of them, a man whose skin was made of porcelain and who tended to help fix mechanical issues. Nobody I spoke to ever knew his name, he just showed up when things needed fixing.
So I sidled up next to him discreetly and he looked at me. I leaned in and whispered, “Champagne, strawberries, and oysters were all ordered.” He raised his eyebrows and said, “Niiiiice.” Marigold, as it turns out, was the current baby of the Autumn Court (a title I took soon after), and a few of the courtiers wanted to make sure she had a good time. I told him about delivering the dental dam to Yova via Paisley and he offered me a fist to bump. Yay for making friends!
Back at the fireplace, Bella was actually getting serious for probably the first time since we were all captured and taken to Arcadia. She told Pam that she didn’t want to run any more because that was all we did back there. Pam asked her if she wanted to try and find the real loyalist or talk to the Knights and Bella wasn’t sure. Pam suggested that we try to get in contact with the Knights somehow, though she didn’t want to put Bella at risk. I rejoined them and suggested we go back to the bistro and get something to eat while we planned our next move. They both agreed that sounded good, so I activated my contract again and we went back to my apartment before heading out to get a bite to eat.
Yova and Marigold were long gone by the time we arrived, so we had some time to settle in and enjoy our meal. Bella seemed to feel a trifle better afterward, and we returned back to my apartment. As we were walking up to my front door, I couldn’t help but notice some muddy footprints outside my door. I held up a hand for Pam and Bella to stop and pointed to the footprints. I slipped in to see what was going on. The footprints continued through my kitchen and into the carpeted living room, where Buck was lying on the couch (muddy boots on the pillows, of course), in a serious glaring contest with Paisley. She was perched on the coffee table glaring at him and he was glaring straight back at her.
“I see you met my guard gecko,” I said. “Yeah, I did,” he said dryly, turning to look at me. I saw he had a nasty scorch mark on his cheek and I smiled, telling Paisley, “Good girl.” She fluttered over to me and nestled in my feathers. Pam and Bella came in when they didn’t immediately hear a struggle and Buck asked for his letter back. I told him that if he told us what he was keeping an eye on Day and Bella for, he could have the letter.
“Look, all I have is my mission. I was keeping an eye on the big guy because he seems to like you and I didn’t want him between you and me when I went to get you,” he told Bella. Bella told him that she wanted to scratch his face off. He shrugged and made possibly his biggest mistake, calling her a little girl. She immediately grew her claws out and he flinched back. “Look, we all do what we gotta do to survive,” he said. “So what, they’re gonna kidnap me and Day, interrogate us, only to find out there’s nothing going on?!” Bella snapped.
Tempers were starting to flare, so I cleared my throat and offered a suggestion: that Buck pass a note along to his spymaster from us, asking to meet and discuss what was going on. He shrugged and said he couldn’t promise anything, but that he’d pass it along to a courier. I sat down at my dining table with my journal and started writing a note. As I did, I noticed Buck was still leaning with his boots up on my couch. “You know, there was a mat you could’ve wiped your fucking boots on,” I said. “Whatever. It’s not my house,” he said. The note I wrote and gave to him read as follows:
“Dear Sir and/or Madam Spymaster: We’ve recently become aware of your intention to acquire a member of our motley, whom you appear to suspect of some wrongdoing. We are terribly distressed by this and wish to parlay, if possible, with you or a representative at a time and place that is convenient. We would be more than willing to assist in your investigation if you are willing to cease attempting to capture our associate. Please let us know if this is agreeable. All the best, Derek, pledged courtier of the Autumn Court Greater Freehold of Upstate New York”
Buck took the letter and his envelope and reiterated that he couldn’t promise we’d get the response we wanted, but that he would send it along. He took his leave and I got out the carpet cleaner, starting to scrub the mud off the carpet and grumbling about it all the while. Pam helped me get things cleaned up, but as we were doing so, she spotted another envelope none of us had seen before, leaning up against the closet door.
The envelope had another one of the seals of the skull with no eyes and the dagger in it. It wasn’t sealed as sternly as the one Bella had managed to get open earlier, and inside was a single photo. It looked like it had been taken on the shittiest old cell phone camera available and then printed on a printer that was desperately in need of an ink change. Nevertheless, it was unmistakably a picture of Day, slumped against a wall. A neatly written note underneath it read, “Trade?” with a set of coordinates. I managed to sum up what we all were thinking when I said, “Well, shit.”
That’s probably good for now, so I’ll cut it here. Next time, you’ll get to learn exactly how screwy rescue attempts can go. Until then, may your apartments always have linoleum floors.

Serving the community through Mission of Mercy
Dozens of dental students served at the sixth annual Mission of Mercy in Reading, Pennsylvania (MOM-n-PA). The Santander Arena, normally full of screaming sports fans or concert goers, was transformed into a free dental clinic for those in need. There were 1,900 patients seen May 18-19.
About 927 volunteers made this possible on that rainy weekend. Of the volunteers who served, many were dental students from Temple, Penn and other surrounding schools. Reading native Marko Yacoub, a fourth-year dental student at Temple, says it meant so much to him to give back to his hometown. The District 3 outreach and service consultant believes he has something that “can change a person’s quality of life.” Yacoub says, “My family was in need at one time, so I feel obligated to return the favor, just like strangers had done for us.”
I also was a volunteer in my own hometown, being born and raised in Reading. I served as an oral surgery assistant for the morning. By the time a patient had gotten to us in oral surgery, they already had their health history evaluated and radiographs taken. The oral surgeon simply had to make the final call for the treatment that day and then do the extraction. One mother came to have her molars extracted and to get her son’s teeth cleaned. We saw her at 10:30 a.m. She had stood in the rain since 4:30 a.m. to receive treatment.
The floor of the Santander Arena in Reading, Pennsylvania, transformed into a dental clinic.
Dr. Bernard Dishler is one of the founders of MOM-n-PA, along with chair, Dr. Gary Davis, and facility chair, Dr. Bruce Terry. Dr. Dishler says this year was a huge success and that the event has become even better organized and more efficient, as they continue learning new ways to improve.
This was Yacoub’s second year serving MOM-n-PA. For those of us seeing it for the first time, it was overwhelming and also fascinating — how you could turn over that many instruments and patients so quickly, while keeping such high spirits. Yacoub says, “It’s awesome that we all work together in the arena, and it moves so flawlessly because of everyone’s kind hearts on those days. We will never meet every single person, but when everyone fulfills their task, its smooth sailing ahead.”
Rima Modi, a third-year dental student at Temple, served as an oral surgery assistant as well. “The simple words I heard from patients after an extraction of an infected molar touched my heart: ‘You are a healer. You have magic. Thank you for taking me out of months of pain.’ I did everything without realizing what it would mean to people. Those words made me realize the difference dentists make in society. Those words will always be cherished.”
Anamaria Castillo is a fourth-year at Temple; she assisted in triage as a Spanish translator. This was her third year volunteering, and she says that she leaves changed every time. “[It’s amazing to see] such instantaneous results in such a small amount of time, which end up lasting a lifetime.” She still remembers the first time she volunteered with MOM-n-PA. The first patient was a former model who had been bulimic. They restored her anterior teeth, and she was so happy, she cried. Castillo still tears up when she tells the story.
Dr. Dishler gets to see moments like this every year. He says, “My pay is the appreciation of the patients.” On Saturday morning when he drove into the parking lot at 5:15 a.m., the attendant said to him, “I don’t know if people are thanking you, but I really appreciate what you are doing.” Dr. Dishler said he was tired, but those words came at the right time.
“People had been thanking us, but that appreciation when I was tired and had to get ready for another busy day put a little snap in my step and [prepared me] for another great day,” he says.

Do you know any life insurance companies that has all of this?
1) Has banding coverage, meaning rates are base on total coverage of the primary and the spouse. 2) Has spouse rider and child rider, so there's only one policy fee 3) Has terminal illness benefit. If you are diagnose to be terminally ill, you can use a portion of the face amount for whatever reasons. 4) Has increasing benefit rider. That means every year up to a certain time, the face amount goes up by a certain percent without having to provide proof of insurability. And the rate of the added coverage is base on the age when the policy was issued to you. 5) Disability waiver of premium. This means when you become disabled, all your premiums will be waivered and the policy will remain enforced until it matures or expires. 6) Guarantees insurability for children. That means when the child becomes an adult, he/she can get life insurance regardless of current health conditions. 7) It has AM Best Rating of A+ or better or Moody Rating of AA or better. The company I work has all these features in all their life insurance policies. I was wondering if any other companies out there has the same features.""

Best Health Insurance For Self Employed?
I really need help finding a good health insurance option. I started my own company in 2009 and have kept it active and grew it slowly ever since. I was, until recently, employed at a large bank where I had good health and dental benefits. I recently left the job to take my business full time and scale it up. I am doing that full time now and it's been about a month since I left my job. I elected to keep my dental insurance through COBRA, because it will only cost me about $23/month. However, to keep my health insurance through COBRA would cost me almost $500/month and I felt that was too much. I have read all the paperwork and believe that I can still elect COBRA for my health insurance for about another month. They give you 60 days from your last day. However, I believe there has to be a better/more affordable option. I am 26 years old and healthy, but God forbid anything ever happened, I want to be covered. Also, if my girlfriend ever got pregnant and I had a child, I would want to be able to sleep at night knowing that I have the health insurance for this. What are my options here? Are there good companies out there that are more affordable than the $450+/month I would have to pay if I kept the United Healthcare plan that I had at my previous job? All advice is appreciated. Why did my health insurance raise 85%?
I work for a school and our healthcare company, Cigna, raised the rates from $20 a month last year, to $130 a month this year! And a family plan through Cigna (which I had hoped to use one day) will cost more than $700 a month!! What?? The best part is, the insurance covers less than last year and has higher copays for everything ($150 for an urgent care visit as opposed to $50 previously). Can anybody explain why this is happening? I'm all for healthcare reform... Companies shouldn't be able to take advantage of hard working citizens, those less fortunate should have access to affordable healthcare, etc. But why this EXTREME hike in price for me? Please keep you anti-Affordable Health Care comments to yourself. I'm looking for a real reason why I'm seeing this huge hike. Auto Insurance forcing me on parents car insurance?
I got my g2 but my parents auto insurance company is forcing me to pay insurance on my moms car even though I will never use it. Why are car insurance quotes on comparison sites so high?
I'm almost 17 and I'm hoping to learn to drive and buy a car, I was looking on some comparison sites to see what the insurance might be on some possible cars (ford KA, fiat sciento, nothing too fancy) but the quotes were ridiculously high? I know being 17 will mean expensive insurance but this was really expensive, they said the cheapest was around 6000 for third party. This is really high because I know loads of people who drive at 17 and their insurance ranges from 1800-3000. So, why is it so high and will it actually be this price when I come to pay the insurance?""

I knocked someones car but he claimed for a lot more and now my insurance has gone from 400 to 900 - help!!?
Back in June I knocked into a stationary vehicle in a car park. I waited for the guy to come back and apologised straight away. (when its your fault in life own up) He was initially annoyed (fair enough) but went on to tell me that someone else had knocked into his car recently and caused 600 worth of damage (the other driver had sped off and hed already had a quote for the work). I cant remember the exact wording of the next bit - but it was understood that I would pay whatever it cost on top of that to fix the area (bumper / side corner area) We exchanged details. I told my insurance company what had happened and the previous damage. There were also photos taken at the time that I forwarded on (not sure if they were actually any help) Next I hear his insurance company has approached mine with a bill for 700. The total amount for fixing his car. I brought up the matter of the previous damage - couple of conversations between insurance companies - his asking him directly if there was any previous damage and him saying no. I told my insurance company that there was a friend with me (we were walking our dogs in the park) who had heard the whole conversation - in fact she was the one that took the pictures. She is a responsible, respectable person who was happy to make a statement. I was told by the insurance company that as it was someone who knew me - they couldnt be seen as an impartial person and they ended up paying the whole amount to his insurance company. I have just received my new insurance quote. Last year it was 437 and now that I have lost my 3 years no claims bonus (I have been driving for much longer but have only owned a small van for 3 years (practicality for my dogs muddy feet) and insurance starts again for vans) but I also have this 700 fault against my name this year. My insurance quote is now 960. Is there anything I can do. Does anyone have advice for any further action I can take? I believe in taking responsibility for your actions - but I am being cheated here out of a lot of money and I dont know what to do. If 100 was down to me then I could have just paid that amount directly and not lost my no claims bonus. But as it stands it will cost me around 500 this year and more again on the consequent years of insurance. Sorry for this being a long one but I really am lost. My insurance is due on 7th Jan.""
Can a car insurance company lower the estimate?
Ok here is my dilemma: I got in a car accident about a week ago, the other driver is at fault. I went for the repair estimate to the agent #1, he was ready to write a check for $1500, but I was wondering how much they would pay if they totaled the car, in a couple of days I got a phone call and the agent#2 said that the vehicle is gonna be a total loss and said they would pay $2300 and take the car. I decided to just take the $1500. Agents #1 and #2 directed me to an agent #3, I explained the whole situation to him and he said he would issue $1800 if I want to keep the car BUT I would have to get a salvage title for the vehicle first due to the state law. The state law requires a person to get a salvage title if the repair cost is 75% or more of the vehicle total value. I do not want to get a salvage title for the vehicle and I told him that the original estimate given by the agent #1 was $1500, not $1800 which is less than 75%, to which he responded I believe we still had some items open when you got that estimate . he will check it and call me back. 1. Can I just lower the estimate to original $1500 so I would not have to get a salvage title for the car? Any law that allows me to lower it? 2. Will the insurance company receive any benefit if they pay me more money but I will have to salvage the car? Why do they wanna do it?""

Is this how liability car insurance works in general and when you grant someone permission to drive your car?
This coverage pays for damage you (or someone driving the car with your permission) may cause to someone else's property. Usually, this means damage to someone else?s car. I called my car insurance and asked them and they said that insurance follows the car rather than a person. So no matter who would be driving it, it would basically be their responsibility. Now, would this also include letting your kid or a family member drive your car? even if they're not in the actual policy? It seems like when that is the case, things get somewhat confusing. I'd love to hear any input from anyone who ever has or currently does work in the car insurance world.""

Update from Dr. Buck and Lexi: Lexi and I finally arrived at the El Sombrero Ecolodge Saturday night. Around midnight, we find a 4″ tarantula joining us in our room. After a few girly screams, strategizing and throwing everything at the araña that had a chance of killing it, we finally triumphed! We didn’t realize how lucky we were until 3 minutes later when the electricity was cut off for the evening, leaving us searching for our flashlights in the pitch darkness!  We’re going to a small rural schoolhouse today for the first day of the mission. We’re hoping to work very hard and help a lot of people in this impoverished area, where most people earn only $2 per day.
We’re trying to get some photos of their hotel for you. Stay tuned!!
March 15, 2017
UPDATE FROM DR. BUCK AND LEXI! On the first day of the mission, we set up in a schoolhouse in a very small town named Aguadas Nuevas that was about an hour drive from the ecolodge, mostly by unpaved roads. The dentists set up in one classroom, the doctors in the adjacent room and the pharmacy outside the school.
About half of the dental patients were children and half were adults. Decay was the major issue. Just as I saw in Honduras, even though the location is far from any town that would be large enough to be a dot on a map, the school had a freezer full of baggies with flavored sugar water in them. I tried to help some parents understand to not give sugar to children between meals, and my Spanish was poor, but good enough to communicate this.
The morning was busy, and we tried our best to encourage the younger patients to be brave by saying “muy valiente!” and “buen trabajo!” One 7-year-old boy was so afraid that he could not open his mouth, so he and his mother left and came back an hour later. He cried the whole time, even though I was very gentle (of course). He needed 5 rotten baby teeth extracted. His mother said if he doesn’t get them out his father would beat him. His 5-year-old brother came later, and he was much braver than his older brother, and I told him so: “Eres más valiente que tu hermano.”
The afternoon brought more patients, a few notable ones were a man dressed in a whole cowboy getup, boots, hat and all, and a nineteen-year-old girl who needed her two upper front teeth extracted. Toothbrushes were handed out to everyone and little stickers for the kids.
Lexi was such a great help to the whole operation, from assisting to instrument sterilization, to holding patients’ hands. I have met very few people who are so competent, have such a strong work ethic, and with such a giant heart. I asked her where she came from! Then I remembered that Carilyn Froberg was a big part of her life from the moment she was born, and it all made sense (kudos to Lexi’s wonderful parents, too!).
We all loaded into the van back to the ecolodge, not caring that there was no hot water for showering, as a cold one was what we needed after sweating all day in the heat. Maybe we’re the only Yoopers longing for snow in the middle of March!
March 18, 2017
“Chócala!” We learned a new way to say “gimme five!” during the second day of the mission, and Lexi and I had fun practicing with the adorable kids hanging out. We set up in a medical clinic with just bars on the windows (no glass), and the kids and adults hung out watching us all day. There isn’t much for entertainment around here.
As we met more people, Lexi had a good question. She asked if the people here are so poor, why do we see so many overweight people? Someone on our team explained how, just like in the US, the cheap food is the processed and unhealthy food and the healthier foods like produce and meat expensive. Working long hours and lack of education also makes exercise not a top priority for many here in Guatemala. The medical team saw many people with diabetes, and unfortunately, we were only able to give 20-30 days’ worth of medicine to each patient. We did try to educate them about sugar in their diet, but juices and simple carbs are so prevalent here, both seem to be served at every meal.
Working in the field presented many challenges, from back pain due to bending over so far since we had to use any chair available, to the wind blowing our gauze on the ground, rendering it useless, to trying to keep proper infection control procedures. Lexi was a superstar, sterilizing instruments for 3 dentists while also assisting two of them and finding time to give high fives to many of the kids. We started running low on supplies, namely gauze, patient bibs and paper towel, and anesthetic. We could make due with improvising most things, but if we ran out of anesthetic on our next day of the mission, we would not be able to help anyone else…
March 22, 2017
Sorry for the delay in getting this final update to you from when Dr. Buck and Lexi were gone last week. It’s been so busy catching up since they’ve been back! Here’s Dr. Buck’s third and final update from her trip in Guatemala: Las Gaviotas (the Seagulls)
Imagine if this was your elementary school, what would your hopes and dreams be? The third day of the mission was spent at a school in another very poor district. It rained some, so we were concerned that not many people would walk to see us, but we were steady the whole day. The dentist and physicians set up in the two school rooms, and the gynecologist set up in a barn for privacy. Las Gaviotas had a large Mayan population, who could be identified by their slightly different features from other Guatemalans. We were told that it is taboo in the Mayan culture to marry outside of their ethnicity.
There were SO many dental infections. It was especially sad to see so many children with them. Several children had a dozen teeth decayed, so we had to choose only the most urgent area to treat, trying not to imagine the inevitable future problems from all of the other broken-down teeth. We would try to educate the parents on sugar, but felt hopeless that any real change would be made.
We used old school desks as patient chairs, the kind where the top is attached to the chair, so even though I tried to have good posture, my back hurt all day long. I was forming blisters on my left hand, which thankfully did not burst. But I didn’t come on this mission to slack for one second, so I think I would be disappointed if I didn’t feel tired and sore. I want to help these people who have so little, and who have so little opportunity or hope for improvement.
As we worked, hearing the occasional turkey gobble from the home next door, we started to smell burning, just like the black snakes we light during 4th of July week. The local women were making bread in a large clay oven. They called this pan de arroz (rice bread) or quesadilla (not the Mexican kind) because it was made with rice flour and a cheese like sour cream. They shared some at the end of the day and it was fresh and warm and wonderful.
We ended the day with one of the only cleanings I did on this trip, on a man about 25 years old, who had no visible decay in his mouth and all of his teeth, which at this point I was not used to seeing. I tried to encourage him and tell him how well he takes care of his teeth. Thankfully, we didn’t run out of supplies. The town leaders thanked us at the end of the day, with genuine gratitude for helping their communities in need.
Seeing how people live in most parts of Central America makes me feel both fortunate for being American, having all the opportunities, food, entertainment and education we do, and concurrently disappointed with the general attitude that we expect things to be so perfect, so clean, new, and hungry for the next thing that might satiate our desires. Though materialism is not an American concept, it is worldwide and will be as long as humans exist. Although anyone who knows me knows I value ambition, the disparity between the “haves” and the “have-nots” seems not quite right when the “haves” have countless things they do not need while the “have-nots” are working so terribly hard just for basic human needs.
I think often of a quote I read recently, which goes something like this: “Once a person has his or her basic needs met, human development should be about being more, not having more.” The goals which we truly should be working diligently on are Love, Compassion, and Kindness. Although all humans are fallible, I am happy to be surrounded by many friends, family members and team members and patients at Northern Trails Dental Care who understand and live by those principles. Thank you to all of the amazing people who are part of my life!

The temperature starts to change, the days grow shorter, and that means it’s fall subscription box time!
(Actually it was 90 degrees here yesterday. We are having some strange weather this year in the Midwest. But I digress …)
My FabFitFun box arrived this week, and it is jam-packed with fall goodies that I can’t wait to dig into, as well as a few items that can be used year-round.  Here they are in no particular order:
Mer-Sea & Co. Scarf – Blush Ombre
This scarf/wrap is very soft and a lovely color. It is billed as the ultimate companion – from the plane to the city streets and best of all, the washer and dryer. I like the fact that it can be machine washed, although I would use a mesh lingerie bag to protect the fringe.
It is 100% polyester and sells for $98 on the Mer-Sea & Co. web site.
On a side note–I requested the blush-colored Jetset Diaries Cable Knit Beanie to match the scarf ($49 on the Jetset Diaries web site.) You can see from the box photo that I received the black one.  Ah well …  I will be giving it away as a gift.
I received two products from Whish: The Mud Mask came with the original box.  The Almond Lip Scrub was an add-on. Their products are Leaping Bunny certified: Paraben free. Sulfate free. DEA and TEA free. Petrochemical free. Phthalate free. Naturally sourced with organic goodness. Made in the USA. I’m looking forward to trying these out.
The trèStiQue Matte Color & Shiny Balm Lip Crayon is a handy two-in-one product that features a creamy, lightweight lip color crayon with a natural matte finish, and a BB lip balm for added shine and moisture. It retails for $28.
The bright pink seems more like a spring/summer color to me, so I will probably save this until then. I like the fact that it is both a color and balm in one “crayon.” I might order a darker color just to try the formula this fall.
Private Party Gym Bag – Will Workout For Cupcakes: Because we all need motivation to work out.  Although my bag should say “Will workout for coffee!” The bag retails for $49.
My TagAlongs Hot & Cold Gel Pack
This type of hot/cold gel pack is nice to have on hand. Unlike the typical ice-packs I use in a cooler, this is flexible and can be shaped to fit wherever you need it. They do recommend wrapping a towel around the pack before applying it to your skin.
This retails for $15.
Imm Living Coxet Wire Heart Ceramic Jewelry Holder – Retail value $33.  This jewelry organizer is ceramic with a rose gold metal insert that stands and forms a heart-like shape. It measures 5 inches in diameter and it’s about 5 inches tall.
Deco Miami Lavender Cuticle Oil – Retail value $12.50. This is 8-FREE · TPHP-FREE · VEGAN · CRUELTY-FREE according to their web site.  The ingredients as listed: MINERAL OIL • ISOPROPYL MYRISTATE • CARTHAMUS TINCTORIUS (SAFFLOWER) SEED OIL • ARGANIA SPINOSA KERNEL OIL (ARGAN OIL) • BAMBUSA VULGARIS EXTRACT (BAMBOO EXTRACT) • TOCOPHERYL ACETATE (VITAMIN E) • ASCORBIC ACID (VITAMIN C) • FRAGRANCE • VIOLET 2 (C.I. 60725)
It smells like lavender, but does not list lavender oil in the ingredients.
Molr Dental Club Organic Carbon + Coconut Teeth Whitening Powder and Toothbrush: I haven’t tried this product, but it looks interesting. This toothbrush set uses the power of activated charcoal to clean and whiten teeth as it binds teeth-staining pests like wine, coffee, and plaque. It retails for $43.95.
And finally another Add-On–Brazilian Kiss Cupuaçu Lip Butter Doce de Leite.
I have to admit this is the item I am most excited about in the box. I am a fan of the Bum Bum Cream–you can read about that in my post “Battle of the Bum Bum Creams.”
This is a lip butter infused with nourishing Cupuaçu, Açaí and Coconut Oil. It does not have a taste and smells heavenly. (It is so hard to describe but if they bottled this scent I would wear it as perfume.)
Verdict–was it worth it to me? Yes. There are enough items in the box that I will use to make it worth the $49 subscription.  And the items I will not use I will give as gifts.
That’s it for my box. Let me know what you think. Do you get the FabFitFun boxes? How did yours differ? Share your thoughts in the comments below.

I would like to offer you a glimpse into Starter Zone, the first book of my new YA/LitRPG series, The Revelation Chronicles.
PROLOGUE
I was born into a world where silicone still ruled. Where the products of the earth outshone those of the sea. Integrated circuits ran all electronic equipment and scientists strove to make the conducting lines smaller and smaller. Silicon Valley tried, and failed, to make chips fast enough to upload human consciousness.
The Revelation came a few years later from the hydrologists. They designed a system that did not use silicone, but instead worked with water molecules. The hydrologists managed to imprint the consciousness of a human mind on a single drop of water.
The water was to be kept in self-contained, sealed aquariums—pure, undiluted, eternal—where virtual realities were constructed to meet every need and desire. All of human knowledge encoded and stored in literal pools of data and integrated with the drops of human consciousness. It was, the hydrologists claimed, utopia achieved.
The obscenely rich were the hydrologist’s first clients, many taken near the end of their lives. The procedure did not always work, but there were enough successes to spur people’s interest. People suffering from terminal illnesses volunteered to be inscribed, and the hydrologists worked and refined their process. Private companies formed and competition forced price wars. Hundreds of customers grew to thousands, and then to millions. There were landmark court cases arguing whether or not health insurance should cover the cost of the inscription—whether or not this was a medical procedure designed to save lives or a form of physician assisted suicide. The law struggled to decide if life ended when the body was drained to a dry, leathery husk, or if life continued inside those glowing, sealed aquariums.
I was thirteen when the governments seized control of the laboratories, first in the Eastern European countries. Then the labs of Europe and the Middle East were swallowed up. Terrorist attacks soon followed and destroyed most of the civilized world over the next three years. The United States, Canada, and Greece, those bastions of democracy, did not fall until the very end. Of course, by then no one cared whether or not the government or the private companies ran the uploading programs. Many of the aquariums ruptured in the strife and the droplets, imbued with human consciousness, re-entered the water cycle of the planet.
CHAPTER ONE
As the sun hovers near the horizon, ready to dip below and plunge the world into darkness, the weather changes for the worse. Clouds gather. Peeking out my window and over the outline of rooftops in the distance is what looks like thunderheads moving toward me in the invisible polluted gusts of wind.
I try not to think about the coming storm as I methodically pull on my boots and zip up my jacket. It is supposed to be waterproof, but I would not risk going out in anything above a light drizzle. Water has a way of seeping through even the best defenses. There’s also a lining that’s overly warm for a summer evening. I’m already sweating and the discomfort adds to my nerves.
I check the hunting knife strapped to my left leg. It was one of the first weapons purchased for me by my dad back when the sporting goods stores were still open for business. He didn’t think I was ready to handle a handgun at thirteen, but he taught me to shoot a rifle in the open fields by our house, helping me hold the weapon steady until I grew strong enough to support the weight. Now, three years later, I have a handgun, a Ruger semi-automatic, but bullets are scarce and loud noises are problematic. My small ammo stash sits in the bottom of my backpack next to the gun.
Instead of the gun, I carry an extra-light crossbow as my go-to weapon. I can hand-make the bolts so I don’t worry about running out of ammunition and the shot is relatively silent. I carry the spare bolts in a quiver strapped to my right leg. It’s awkward when running, but I can draw the bolts fast when needed.
My little sister, Alby, has loaded her own backpack. I lift it to test the weight and then pull a few things out. I place them in my own pack without comment. I help her position the lighter pack over her shoulders, tightening the straps so that it will stay balanced. She always tries to do more than she should, but I don’t like the way her face has a perpetual pinched, strained look or the deep shadows under her eyes. She looks far older than her seven years. This scares me more than everything else and that fear threatens to register on my face. I force myself to stay calm.
I check her raincoat and boots, making sure everything fits snugly. I help Alby pull up the hood of her coat, tucking in a strand of dark hair that has escaped her ponytail. As frightened as she is, she manages to give me a smile. I smile back, trying to present a brave front. As my dad used to say, “fake it till you make it.”  Over the last few years, I’ve been faking confidence more and more often for Alby’s sake.
“Ready to go?” I ask with all the false cheer I can muster in my voice. I take one last glance over the motel room that had served as a temporary home for the last few days, looking for anything that we might have left behind. The room is swept clean. No trace whatsoever that we had ever been there.
Alby nods. “Ready, Cami.”
“If we get separated, remember to keep going north,” I say. “Follow the road till you get to the park, then take the walking paths. No matter what happens, keep going. Stop when you get to the Stone River. I’ll meet you at the bridge in the center of the park where we used to feed the ducks, okay?”
She nods again, looking up at me with those dark eyes so full of trust. I hug her, because if we do get separated, there isn’t much hope we will ever see each other again. I need to keep up the pretense of hope, though, because that’s all we have to keep us going.
Stone River Park is at the very limits of the city and the area surrounding it is relatively unpopulated. I figure that once we are out of the city, our chances of survival will dramatically increase. After reaching the park, we can follow the Stone River north. There’s bound to be deserted houses in the country and less chance that any of the gangs would be interested in the meager pickings outside of the city. We might even be able to find a place to stay before winter.
I crack open the door of our motel room. It is still light enough to stain everything with graying shades of color. The setting sun casts long shadows between the buildings, so I depend more upon my ears to find signs of other humans. I hear no motorcycle engines and no voices, only the wind, blowing and moaning, and the far-off call of a bird. The coming storm appears to have cleared the streets. They are deserted except for empty, crashed vehicles abandoned in every lane.
Alby and I had been lucky to reach the motel a few days ago. The single-story building is on the outskirts of the main town and catered to big rig truck drivers and other traffic from the interstate. I had found the skeleton key in the motel office after climbing in through the bathroom window. Alby and I spent the nights scouring every room for supplies.
No one had broken into it before we got there. Too many other rich targets to go around. But inside each room was a mini-fridge filled with snacks. Even though the electricity had been turned off, the chocolates and small bags of honey-coated nuts were edible. The tiny bottles of alcoholic beverages in each fridge did not seem useful, but I kept a few. They might be helpful in starting a fire someday when we made it outside the city. We even discovered coffee filters and a small bottle of chlorine bleach—a major score for treating our drinking water.
If I hadn’t spent days secretly peering out the dark windows of the motel, I might believe my sister and I were the last two people left on earth. But I know that out there, behind the ruined buildings and boarded-up windows, there are at least a few pairs of eyes whose owners would kill us without a second thought. My eyes flick toward the two bodies hanging from the traffic lights in the nearby intersection. They hadn’t been moved. Good.
The daytime usually belongs to looter-gangs, each with spray-can marked territories in bright displays of color that start on the buildings and drip down toward the pavement. The gangs wear something marked as well, usually a jacket or bandanna that will stand out from a distance. The snipers hole up in their nests and target anyone who encroaches on their gang’s territory. They particularly looked for members of other factions trying to increase their terrain.
Paint tags don’t show up well after dark, though, so the gangs have started leaving their victims as warnings to others not to encroach on their holding. These bodies have been hanging undisturbed in the intersection for several days, indicating a lack of activity in the area. I can only hope that the gangs have moved inward, toward the center of the city and more supply-rich targets.
No one is ever going to catch the murderers, or the ones who strung up the bodies like macabre trophies, and put them in jail. They’ll just go on and do it again and again. Like animals in the jungle—except that animals are not cruel.
We were lucky to go unmolested by the local gangs. Heaven knows we don’t look like we have much of anything, and we don’t look threatening, but that will only last for so long. Someday someone will try to kill us, possibly for no other reason than wanting to watch us die. The whole world, it seems, is at war, and no one is on my side except Alby. We only have each other.
A streak of lightning splits the sky almost directly overhead, making me wince. It is followed by a heavy clap of thunder. As frightening as it is, the bad weather is to our advantage. No one wants to be caught outside in the rain. Everyone is more afraid of fresh, untreated water and what it can do than they are of each other. But I believe we can make it out of the area and to shelter before the rain poses any danger.
In fact I’m betting our lives on it.

‘We need to remember why we came to this profession’
Busload: Dr. Nayrika Salamati poses for a photo with about two dozen children and their teacher during an international volunteer trip held May 2016 in Hanover Parish, Jamaica. The children had just gotten out of their school bus and lined up to sing before they were seated to receive oral hygiene instructions and to be seen by a dentist.
When Dr. Nayrika Salamati entered a makeshift dental clinic inside a church in Hanover Parish in northwestern Jamaica, it felt humid and dark.
“We brought our own lights and our own fans,” she said. “It wasn’t ideal but it worked well enough.”
By 8:30 a.m., busloads of schoolchildren would arrive ready to receive free dental services from a small team, which included two general dentists, an oral surgeon, two Jamaican dental students, hygienists and dental assistants and Dr. Salamati, a pediatric dental resident.
By the end of the week, the team saw 721 patients, most of whom were children, and provided services ranging from restorations to extractions, cleanings and fluoride treatment. The volunteers also provided oral hygiene instructions and prevention education.
Two months later, Dr. Salamati would be doing the same thing — this time in the Village of Canaries in St. Lucia.
For Dr. Salamati, a 2013 graduate of the University of Washington dental school, doing outreach, especially international volunteer work, has been a longtime goal.
“I believe that as dentists, we’re fortunate to provide needed care,” she said. “We need to remember why we came to this profession.”
For Dr. Salamati, who is currently completing her pediatric residency at Jacobi Medical Center in New York, that passion for volunteer work began at a young age.
She was inspired by the poem “Bani Adam” by Iranian poet Sa’adi that is also inscribed on the United Nations building entrance. The poem calls for compassion, mercy and breaking down barriers between human beings.
“We’re all humans,” said Dr. Salamati, who is from Iran. “During my residency, everybody in the program was encouraged to do outreach.”
Last year, she contacted a coordinator who had given a presentation about international work while Dr. Salamati was in dental school. Dr. Salamati was then put in touch with the Tryall Foundation and Great Shape! Inc., which has an international humanitarian dental project called 1000 Smiles.
Dr. Salamati volunteered in Jamaica from May 14-25, 2016. The volunteers were responsible for the cost of their own flight and were asked to bring their supplies. Dr. Salamati was fortunate that a grant through her residency program sponsored the trip. All other dental equipment and accommodations were provided by Great Shape. Dr. Salamati said that Jamaica has a one dentist per 100,000 patients ratio.
“The trip was intense because we all wanted to do as much as possible,” she said, adding that after a long day, they would come back to their resort to recharge.
“The dental team would have a nice dinner. There’s a pool and fresh coconut water,” she said. “You’ll get tired but it’ll be worth it. Jamaica is beautiful.”
After her return to the United States, Dr. Salamati said she decided to immediately do another volunteer trip.
Working with the same organizations, she went to St. Lucia to volunteer from July 30-Aug. 7. This time, the trip was part of a larger, two-week project. It consisted of a bigger team — up to 50 providers, plus assistants.
However, the work was just as intense, if not more so, than her work in Jamaica.
Dr. Salamati worked on the second week of the project. It took over an hour in minibuses to reach the rural villages where they would set up shop. They saw over 900 patients.
Despite the tough working conditions and hard work, Dr. Salamati said she probably got more out of the trips than what she provided.
“I came out of this a different person,” she said. “You become a more well-rounded health care provider. You get to meet beautiful people and work with a team who share your passion. Once you go, you’ll want to go again and again.”
