part 22 | ao3 | ff.net |
Summary:  He's a easy-going tattoo artist with a love for sunglasses and a talent for drawing skeletons. She's a high-powered finance executive with a neurotic brother and an amazing sportscar. In another universe, they're undead soldiers fighting in a war for the fate of reality. In this one, they're just two doofuses trying to make it to Rukia's tattoo appointment without falling head over heels for one another.
Starring: Rukia, Renji, and an extensive peanut gallery.
Rating: Teen, for language and general, low-grade horniness
This time: Rukia gets her tattoo.
And...that's it! It's a wrap! If you were waiting for it to be finished to read it (or perhaps...leave a kudos?), now is your time!
Bonus small personal story below the cut that contains a minor spoiler for part 21, if you haven't read it yet.
I've told sort of bits and pieces of this story, but I thought I would put it all together for posterity.
I don't use Instagram very much, but what I do use it for is checking out potential tattoo artists when I'm in the market. During the opera subplot of this fanfic, when I was brainstorming for outfit ideas, I discovered the wonderful account lastnightatthemet which provided a lot of inspiration and general register-setting. However, at one point, I had hopped on Instagram to look for opera outfits, and I scrolled past some posts from the artist who did my first tattoo, back in 2018. He has a bunch of flash designs up, including one of a little bluebird that absolutely stole my heart. Despite absolutely not needing a fourth tattoo, I...needed it. So I emailed, and it turned out, he is a busy man, and I managed to snag an appointment for...next March.
I didn't love waiting that long (this was late October), but I figured it would give me a thing to look forward to. But then on a Sunday in the middle of November, I got a phone call-- he'd had a cancellation, could I come in that Tuesday morning? Of course I could.
I need to emphasize that this did not inspire the cancellation that happens in the story. That's been in my outline since, like, last July. But I was basically at the last few chapters of this story, and so I ended up getting my tattoo and then immediately writing the chapter where Rukia gets hers, which is why it is so stupidly detailed.
I am so grateful to my own wonderful tattoo guy, who both put me a fantastic lil birb friend on my shoulder and very cheerfully answered a bunch of stupid questions about the tattooing process. For the record, my tatt has been healing up wonderfully, it never even peeled. That Saniderm is magical stuff.

Hey, you want some bonus content for Chapter 13 of this could be permanent, you know (my Renruki Tattoo Artist AU fanfic)
cut for spoilers and also being exceptionally long
I don’t exactly remember why I felt like I needed to have them go to the opera, I think it was literally all built around the scene where Byakuya walks them through trying to tie a bow tie. In any case, it took me one million years to pick out all the outfits, and I thought you might like to look at some of the pictures.
First, big ups to the lastnightatthemet Instagram account, where you can see what actual people wear to the opera. It is both an inspiration and a delight, and I think you will find that the outfits I came up with are not even all that wild in comparison.
Here’s Renji’s beloved smoking jacket, which Tumblr then proceeded to give me ads for the next month. This is pretty much exactly how it is.
Tumblr media
Here it is as a full outfit. Some of the details here are a little more modern, but this is the general look.
Tumblr media
I spent a ton of time looking for outfit refs for Rukia. I found a lot of things I liked *aspects of* (here are some examples), but then I just ended up smashing them together.
Tumblr media
This is the sketch I finally came up with (left). @fluffnflightillustrations helped me refine it into something that looked actually good (on the right). Thanks, Fluff!
Tumblr media
Rukia’s shoes
Tumblr media
The coat is question is a cocoon coat, or more specifically, a Poiret cocoon coat.
Tumblr media
Here’s Phyrne Fisher, from Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries in something similar. (If you haven’t watched Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries, and you love gasping at outfits, I cannot recommend it highly enough. It’s also a really, really good show on top of have a fantastic aesthetic)
Tumblr media
I never got around to mentioning this in the text because it was too much of a deep dive, but the look I was going for was very specifically an Edward Gorey Mystery! look. You might know Gorey from The Gashlycrumb Tinies, but he was a really cool dude overall. He’s one of my favorite artists (I visited his house on my honeymoon!), and in my mind, he is one of Renji’s major artistic style influences, along with Mike Mignola of Hellboy fame.
Tumblr media
This already very long, but there was one other note I wanted to make about the last chapter:
I’ve mentioned before that the delight of an AU-- especially when you are an author who writes a lot of canon-compliant fic-- is when you tease out some essential difference in character because of the circumstances and hits you like a brick in the face.
I have probably written a literal one million words of fanfiction about Rukia and Renji and Byakuya and the only time I have written Rukia and Byakuya saying “I love you” to one another is in a piece of unpublished, post-TYBW ephemera, where Renji finally beats Byakuya in a spar and asks for his permission to date Rukia, and then Byakuya asks Rukia what she thinks about that. ONE. MILLION. WORDS.
Anyway, there’s an absolutely unremarkable bit in this chapter where Rukia and Byakuya say good-bye to each other on the phone and throw in an “I love you” for good measure and I think this is the first time I have ever teared up while writing.

A charmer ✨ From @lastnightatthemet the style blog I shoot for @metopera ✨ For this ongoing project I'm constantly asking strangers to let me photograph them, which can be a very awkward thing! Even though I'm asking them because I think they have great style, some people turn me down (why?!?). But doing it again and again has transformed the experience and I find myself really enjoying these short - sometimes energetic, sometimes quiet - moments with people. I like to be very quick to get something true before they start to pose ⚡️📸⚡️ #lastnightatthemet #lnatm #metopera (at The Metropolitan Opera)

#HamishBowles @hamishbowles at the @metopera for @lastnightatthemet I was interviewed by @spectacle_arts about shooting the style blog "I think it's important to dress up. It shows respect for the venue, but also to show off the beauty of the evening. I just don't think it has to be a certain way" What catches my eye are the ones who really enjoy dressing and do it their own way 💯 #lastnightatthemet #lnatm #metopera #operastyle @voguemagazine --- Link to article: http://www.spectacle-arts.com/blog/2017/6/3/last-night-at-the-met (at The Metropolitan Opera)

Last Night at the Met
Last night at the Met I sat next to a lady who reeked of mothballs and rosewater. Orchestra seats! I could hardly grab a breath to power my cries of "Brava" for Jamie Barton's Adalgisa. Maybe the ticket takers could offer to bathe these wackos who forget they are going to be sitting next to other humans.
