Laurits Tuxen (1853 - 1927) was a Danish painter and sculptor who specialised in figure painting and was associated with the Skagen Painters. He first visited Skagen in 1870 and returned there often. Away from Skagen he travelled widely, painting portraits for Europe's royal families including the Danish Royal House, British and Russian royalty. His first wife died in 1901. He remarried the Norwegian, Frederikke Kos Treschow (1856 - 1946) and joined the Skagen colony by buying Madam Bendsen's property there, converting it into a stately summer residence. Away from Skagen he made lively portraits, among them his self-portrait in the Uffizi Gallery in Florence, and images of Peder Severin Krøyer, in the Museum of Fine Arts in Budapest. He also made sculptures, including a portrait group of Krøyer and Michael Peter Ancher. Tuxen mixed painting Skagen landscapes with paintings of his family, friends and garden flowers. In Skagen Tuxen painted mainly landscapes, away from Skagen he painted portraits of European royalty Christian IX of Denmark, Queen Victoria, Czar Nicolas II and others including Greek royalty.

Portrait of a Lady by Laurits Tuxen, 1894
This is the essence of Victorian wedding look of late XIX century, i.e. La Belle Epoque. Puffy sleeves, high neck, modest skirt and incredibly thin waistline - like a dragonfly.

'Self Portrait' as painted in 1911 by Danish painter and sculptor Laurits Tuxen (1853 - 1927). To have lived as a painter when photography was a helpmate to painting and not the dominant means of depicting portraits and landscapes. the way Laurits Tuxen did, must have been a fine time for a talented painter. With hindsight, if painting was thought to be slower than photography and left control in the hands of relatively few painters and dealers, the results were more than worth it.
