considering that raphael was familiar with durge’s handiwork and tells them that when they first meet, can’t help but think of the potential that mizora is familiar with durge too or at the very least has heard their name mentioned in her circles. and in a wyll romance context, imagine mizora being vaguely familiar of durge meanwhile he doesn’t know anything about her past, so it’s a surprise for her at first when she realises that the oh so gallant blades of frontiers is falling for someone that’s such a sinner. then the realisation that he doesn’t know anything abt them and they’re also not telling him anything ..??? that’s too entertaining for her maybe she’ll stick around and wait to see what happens. mizora whispering in his ear telling wyll that durge isn’t what they seem, and he’s gonna be so sooo disappointed later on when he finds out the truth about their sweet little love and because she’s such a generous and wonderful patron she can tell him the truth for the very small price of adding more shit in his contract - nothing is for free after all. like mizora giving him small warnings early on so she can say I told you so! later, and when he’s not budging she’ll just remind him that he sold his soul to a devil anyway so maybe they really are perfect together. like just the concept of mizora meddling in wyll’s business and being so so annoying in the romance (which doesn’t even have to be durge romance tbh but I’m thinking of it in the wyves (wyll/yves) context lol) is such a missed opportunity imo. like she literally has a tracker on him she’s very aware of what’s going on and I refuse to accept that she won’t at least try to ruin the moment when there’s something romantic happening between wyll and durge.
and then you have wyll who chooses to believe their partner than to listen to the devil buzzing in his ear, the slow dread when he realises what mizora was hinting about durge was true when the act 3 reveal happens, and how proud he would have felt when he watched them deny bhaal and reclaim their own freedom because mizora had been so wrong about them.
also just because wyll is in a constant surveillance 24/7 imagine how uncomfortable it would’ve been for him trying to show his affections towards his partner when there’s a voice planting doubts in his ear whether it’s about his partner or himself. it’s an active effort from him to block her voice out and sometimes it won’t always work. so his affection comes out a bit restrained sometimes, a little held back, but then he doesn’t want his partner to worry so he puts a bit more performance but it pains him bc he knows that they deserved to be loved better than what he’s showing right now and he wants to love them better but he just can’t in that moment …

P1 P2 P3
Days like today suck.
She can’t get out of bed, she’s so hungry her stomach is swirling and screaming and there’s a pain in her intestines that feels like someone is eating her from the inside out but she can’t move… and she has to pee but her legs hurt and her head is pounding from the light. It’s 6 am according to the alarm clock, Spencer hasn’t left for work yet and she’s already missing him.
She manages to make it to the bathroom, sitting there for too long after because she can’t find the courage to stand back up.
“Why?” She whispers to herself before the tears start.
Covering her face as she cries, she’s still sitting on the toilet with her underwear around her ankles, sobbing as Spencer walks in.
He helps her up without asking, he’s seen too many bad mornings now to ask if she needs help, he just knows she wants to go back to bed, so he fixes her underwear and picks her up.
When he finally lays her down with all her pillows, he lowers the temperature in the room to relax her bones and gets her a ginger ale to help with the nausea from the pain she’s in. It is a regular occurrence for her to wake up and feel like she’s dying, but Spencer was wonderful when dealing with it.
He’s in the kitchen for a while, she’s worried he’s making something for her to eat that she’ll have to lovingly turn away because she can’t do it right now. Her throat is too tight and it hurts to swallow or talk.
She can hear him talking… he’s on the phone with someone.
When he comes back in, he cuddles into her the way he knows she likes. Soothing his hands over her back in a way that helps the pain while also helping her feel like she’s not alone in all of this. He’ll never understand; but he loves her, so a part of him feels it too.
“You called out?” She whispers against his chest.
He nods, his cheek resting on the top of her head as she feels the friction. “I don’t feel good when you don’t feel good.”
“I’m sorry you had to help.”
He’s told her time and time again that he doesn’t mind.
He would kill for her, he’d clean up the mess if she killed someone. He’d even dig the fucking grave if she needed him too… he wasn’t opposed to being there for her no matter what that entailed.
She just hated the fact he had to, he knew her apology came from her hatred of herself and not the fact she felt sorry for him. She loved the help, it made her feel loved until she felt disappointed in herself for needing it.
“Do you want your medicine?”
She smiles finally, “if you mean my secret joint stash— yes, but if you can’t handle being around me like that, then I don’t need it today.”
“I think I’d like to try it,” Spencer whispers. “If you can smoke weed and not relapse then I think I can too?”
“Probably, but if you can’t, I’ll support you however you need me to?” She smiles up at him, he kisses the tip of her nose as she kisses his chin.
Getting high with Spencer is… interesting to say the least. He doesn’t want a full hit, he just wants a taste and so she takes a drag and blows the smoke from her lungs to his. Sharing a part of themselves in a way they never expected before, this is his most vulnerable moment and he was trusting her with it.
The sunshine hits his face in such a perfect way that as they lay side by side, she can watch his pupil devour his iris as he gets high. Their breathing is steady and their fingers are interlocked. They’re content just blinking together, in the sunshine, quiet. In love.
Her body is so calm, and her mind is slow as she takes it all in and he looks so relaxed. He’s not jittery or caffeine-deprived like most mornings; he’s not anxious or stressed or trying to find a way to pretend he’s fine before leaving for work again, only to come home sad.
He’s okay.
She’s okay.
“It's nice,” he whispers, “but it’s not as good as you.”
She smiles, trying not to laugh at how his thoughts are going to be all jumbled for the next few hours. He’s going to be smart yet stupid at the same time and she couldn’t fucking wait to hear all the things he thinks of.
“I know what you mean,” she agrees.
“This is like a tidal wave..." his ramble starts and she is so excited to see where it takes them. "A tsunami that rushes and relieves just as quickly." His eyes are closed as he talks, visualizing his feelings and it makes her giddy.
"You’re like a volcano; there are so many stages before mass destruction, and even then there’s still the ash cloud and the debris and the lava dries like rocks… the destruction is total and the cleanup will be brutal.”
“I’m addicted to you," his eyes are closed as he talks, visualizing his feelings and it makes her giddy. "Drugs are boring and you’re not,” Simplifying his meaning as his eyes open again.
“I love you,” he says with the same certainty as the first time.
“I love you, too, Spencer,” she didn’t think they’d go down this path when she was blowing into his mouth, she expected him to panic or get horny.
“I don’t think I’ve ever really told you how much.”
He shakes his head lightly, “I wouldn’t be opposed to knowing.”
If she thinks it over, she’ll abandon ship before she can tell him, so she just jumps into it.
“I was a little scared to ask you to help me lock my door that first day because I thought you’d think I was just some junky who couldn’t get their shit together. But the second you asked if I had a local group and you helped me; that was the moment I knew I wanted you in my life for forever.”
He smiles, silent so she can keep going. He’ll take his turn when she’s really done.
“And then when we got to talking it was like I knew you already. Like I had your memories in my mind and as you told me things I was like well duh! Yeah, that’s my Spencer! I don’t know how it happened so fast. One minute you’re a stranger and the next you’re the only person I ever want to see for the rest of my entire fucking life,” it’s more passionate than she expected as she rambles on.
“I can’t get married on paper without losing my disability, but I don’t give a fuck about a piece of paper or someone officially giving us that title one day, I’m content just staying in this bed with you for the rest of time and never moving again.”
He looks like he’s about to explode with love as he presses his lips together in the softest smile. He can’t keep quiet any longer, “are you asking me to spend the rest of my life with you but not marry you?”
She laughs at the realization, “I think so?”
They’re trying to kiss but it ends up more like laughing with their mouths touching and teeth occasionally clashing. It’s hysterical because of the marijuana, sure, but they’re high on each other. It’s everything they’ve ever wanted.
To find something better than drugs; that little purpose in life comes back, that drive to see tomorrow because there are good memories to be made with their favourite person. She’s not afraid of the darkness or the unknowing anymore, Spencer’s her guiding light.
He's holding her close to his chest after a while, "are you feeling better?"
"Of course," she smiles, "I've got my weed and my reid."
His laugh is everything as it fills their space again. This was how the rest of her life was going to feel, and it made her excited for tomorrow.
She’s feeling a lot better later and they need Spencer to help Penelope back at work, but he doesn’t want to leave her. She’s in sweats with a blanket on her lap in the corner of Penelope’s office, a book in her hand and a coffee on the table beside her as she listens to them bicker back and forth.
“If you hack the NSA we can no longer use all this as evidence if he’s brought in alive, Penelope!” Spencer whisper shouts at her, afraid to raise his voice at her but wanting to get his point across.
“Hotch needs the aerial shots like yesterday, and the NSA won't get them to us in time for this kid!” She yells back.
“Call google…” Y/N suggests, flipping through her book.
“What?” Spencer looks at her like she just said the dumbest thing ever.
“They’re taking photos constantly for their maps program, my mom was saying our new roof is now on the updated map. They might have all the photos saved up, if the FBI asks nicely they might work with you…” she explains, pressing her lips together in a tight smile.
“You’re a genius!” Penelope shouts, dialling the phone and getting JJ to work his media magic for contact at google.
Spencer's smile is one she hasn’t seen before, he’s not only proud of her; he looks a little turned on. She just cracked the case by knowing all the little hacks about the internet as part of her day job. She lived online, and now she was saving lives because of it.
It was a good case to help on, she got to see 3 kids go home to their parents and know a terrible man was going to rot in prison for the rest of his sad and pathetic life. The hard part was seeing them go through months of footage of this guy's yard, seeing the child-sized holes he dug up. The disrupted earth and the knowledge of what happened when there wasn’t picture proof.
They go to a meeting after work.
They sit side by side, her leg is crossed and resting over his knee as their arms are linked and fingers interlocked. They really couldn’t be any closer if they tried. They just wanted to listen today, to know they were in a room of people who were trying, people who understood and battled every bad feeling they did.
“Y/N,” the group leader calls her out just before the end of the meeting, “it’s nice to see you back here with Spencer, we heard you found another group but it’s nice to see you here for the support.”
“Thank you,” she smiled. “I’m sorry I couldn’t stay, but as you can see he is distracting.” She gestured to how they were sitting with a small giggle. “I like coming here if you guys don’t mind me occasionally dropping by?”
“By all means,” another member, carol, spoke up. “Spencer is a great sponsor, it’s nice to see him happy.”
She didn’t know he was a sponsor but he thanks her for the compliment, it turns out almost everyone in his group turned to Spencer for support. It was comforting to everyone there to know the real, chemical and biological reasoning behind their addictions. Spencer provided a sense of calm for all of them, like a younger brother; they all loved him dearly.
They’re still holding hands as they walk home, the sun is still setting and it's barely even 7 pm. All the lights on the street are on, shops are closing and the sidewalks are bare. One store is still open however, across the street, she can see the big storefront window, illuminated with the brightest lights to show off a new collection of rings.
“Do you want one?” He notices her eyes darting to the light like a moth to a flame.
“What?” She zones back in when he stops walking.
“A ring, do you want to get one?” He clarifies with the softest voice.
She nods softly, “you should get one too though, seeing as I asked you and everything.”
He grips her hand tighter and they dart across the street. Giggling like children running to the playground, they’re almost out of breath from laughing as they open the shop door with a ding. Smiles on their faces, joy in their hearts, it makes the shop owner swoon as she sees them.
“Did you just get engaged?” She pries with a knowing smile.
They nod, “we just need some rings,” Y/N adds.
She waves them over, “well I’m going to need our sizes first, here try these on.” She hands them what looks like a thin ruler with holes spaces out.
Y/N attempts to find the right one, fitting the best into the 9 and a half. Spencer fits into the 11 on the first try like he knew already and the woman just laughs at the way Y/N glares at him with love.
“What kind of rings are we thinking? Do you have a preferred cut, style, size, or colour?”
It’s a lot all at once and she’s never really thought about it, “I love my grandma's ring, do you have any vintage styles?”
“I have vintage-style rings as well as some restored rings from the '20s and '30s,” she brings out a jewellery box from under the counter. “These are all appraised and unique.”
When she takes the lid off, Y/N’s eyes widen at the view. There are at least 50 rings in their velvet beds as they wait patiently to be tried on; all different shapes sizes and colours like she said. It feels a little overwhelming at first but then her eyes land on a green one. She takes it out slowly and slides it over her ring finger.
It’s perfect.
Spencer picks out a nice gold band to match, he pays and the lady is so happy to watch them leave hand in hand with their new rings. Dedicated to each other forever and ever, he was her person for the rest of time because he said so and that’s as good as a piece of paper.
She’s a completely different person from who she was when she woke up; twirling down the street with the love of her life, high on loving him as he makes her laugh and holds her hand. He stops in the middle of the street and places his hands on her cheeks, drawing her in closer.
“Loving you is so much fun.”
“Ain’t it fun?” She agrees with a smile before pressing their lips together.

Kidnapped: Part 3 of 3
********WARNING!!!!!!!********* Potentially Triggering Material/Threat of Rape/Forced Sexual Contact/NSFW****************** **********************************
We learned that Mikasa had figured out where Kenny was keeping the Captain and me, and staged our rescue. Afterwards, the Captain was relentless in striking a deal with Dimo Reeves for the Interior Police that had hired him for the failed abduction. Which was how I found myself on a horse, riding out to an abandoned house to meet Reeves, with the rest of my squad.
No one would look at me. It could be because they are embarrassed due to the fact that I’m bare except for a cloak and shoes. The other reason could be that the Captain insisted that I ride with him. He didn’t look at me or talk to me, just got on the horse and pulled me up with him, settling me sideways on his lap. Glancing behind us, I saw the looks exchanged between the rest of the squad. They want to know what happened. Even more than what I’m sure Jean told them.
After reaching the house, the wagon with Sannes showed up. After quickly securing the prisoners, Levi orders the boys to find me some clothes and the girls to help me clean up. He pauses and looks at me for a moment, his expression blank but his eyes dark, before walking off to interrogate Sannes.
After finding a pair of trousers and a shirt, Armin, Jean and Connie leave me Sasha and Mikasa in a bedroom. Sasha nervously looks at me like I’m about to break. I honestly prefer Mikasa’s cold, indifferent gaze. Pulling off the cloak, I hear Sasha gasp.
“I didn’t know you were completely naked Y/N!” Turning I see her eyes are wide with shock.
“That bastard Kenny cut my clothes off of me.” I shrugged and walked over to the basin of water. Picking up the rag and the soap, I quickly clean up, not noticing the tears in the brunettes eyes. I did see Mikasa’s eyes narrow in rage when she noticing where I was having to clean up. After dressing in the clothes brought to me, we make our way back to the room where the boys are sitting, listening to Sannes scream.
“Damn, the Captain is angry. He hasn’t let up yet.” Connie observes.
“Good. If he associates with those bastards that took us, he deserves it.” I answer, looking at the flame of the candle on the table.
Jean shifts next to me, catching my attention. Looking at him, I see him blush when I make eye contact, and he looks away as he questions. “Ummmm........Y/N? I hate to ask, but what exactly happened back there?”
Mikasa scolds Jean for asking such an insensitive question, while Sasha assures me that I don’t have to talk about it unless I want to. Armin and Connie just look away, uncomfortable.
“It’s okay, Mikasa. He was the one who found us. Kenny, the leader of that squad, forced me to make a choice. He left right before you showed up. I’ll just say....I did what I had to do.”
** Time Skip **
We made it through rescuing Historia and Eren, and defeating Rod Reiss’ titan. Levi found Kenny before he died outside of the wreckage of the Reiss chapel. Sending everyone away while he talked to the man, he looked sad and vulnerable when he retuned.
Levi and I haven’t talked about what happened. Not that we have had many opportunities. Through the set up of our strategy in Orvud, I would feel the Captain’s eyes on me. When I would meet his gaze, he immediately turned and walked away, leaving me convinced he was avoiding me. When the smoke cleared and the victory was ours, Levi was involved in the numerous meetings that were held. Our entire government was about to change.
~~ It was done. I had just witnessed Historia being crowned as the rightful Queen in the Walls. The others in the squad have walked off with Historia, headed towards the celebration banquet, but Hanji stops me.
“Hey Y/N. How are you, hon?” Her big brown eyes carefully search my face.
“I’m fine, Hanji. Why does everyone act like I’ve been through a horrible ordeal?”
“Well, I guess it’s because they can only assume what happened. You haven’t told them and you know Levi didn’t. He did talk to me about it, telling me the choice Kenny gave you. No one should have to make that decision.” Hanji rubs my arm as she talks, trying to soothe me.
“Well, I guess I feel guilty. Hanji, I hate that Captain Levi didn’t have a choice. He’s more of a victim than I am. I’m ashamed to say I enjoyed it, Hanji. I’m afraid he hates me now.” Looking down, my cheeks flush as I admit my secret.
Hanji laughs. Shocked, I look up at her. She shakes her head and smiles at me. “You two...I swear.” Patting my head, she walks away, leaving me to wonder at her comment.
Walking back to the guest room I had been given in the palace in solitude, my thoughts turn back to our capture. It’s seemingly at the forefront of my thoughts lately, due to the unresolved issue with Captain Levi. It makes me wonder if he will have me transferred off his squad.
Frowning, I try to ignore the fear in my gut at the idea of being reassigned. Walk closer to my destination, I notice someone waiting for me in the corridor. Pushing away from the column, Levi watches as I approach. “Are you going to punch me too?” He asks.
“Huh???”
“Our new queen just punched me. Just wanted to know if I needed to expect another one.” He drolls, obviously amused at our tiny queen and his previous subordinate, hitting him.
“No. I’m not going to hit you.” I move towards the door to my room. I avoid looking at him while I unlock the door and move to go inside. His slender fingers wraps around my arm, tugging me gently to look back at him. His eyes bore into mine, filled with urgency. “We need to talk, Y/N.”
Nodding, I walk into my room and motion for him to follow. I turn around and wait for him to speak. Closing the door, he leans against it, watching me. I use the opportunity to take in his form, military trench coat fitted to his muscular frame, the cravat perfect tied and his ebony hair shiny. My perusal lingers as I start to blush, remembering how he felt under me, inside me. Wondering how he would look fully undressed and earnest, hovering over me. Breaking away from my traitorous thoughts, I turn and walk to the window overlooking the courtyard. “What do we need to talk about, Captain?”
He sighs. “Sit down with me.” Motioning me over to the settee, he removes his coat and sits down. Following suit, I sit next to him and wait.
“You need to know something. When I talked with Kenny before he died, he....revealed some things.” Levi licks his lips, the normally calm Captain seemingly nervous as he looks down at his hands and continues “You know I’m from the Underground. But no one else knows that when I was 4, my mother died, leaving me alone in the world.”
My heart shatters at the sorrowful image and I gasp, compassionately reaching for his hand. He looks at my hand on his for a moment as if confused and goes on. “Kenny showed up right before I staved to death, sitting in that disgusting room with her corpse. He raised me, as you know, but when I was 10, he left. I was in a fight with a man, when I looked up from beating him, Kenny was walking away. I never saw him again until the day we were kidnapped.”
“Oh God! That BASTARD! How could he do that to you!” I spit out, furious for the boy Levi had been. My grip tightened on his hand as he looked at me, a small curve of his lips flashing for a second.
“What I didn’t know, is that Kenny is, was, my uncle. My mother’s brother. I also found out that my last name is Ackerman.” His grey eyes searched mine, trying to read my reaction.
“You....you didn’t know your last name?” I choked out, tears filling my eyes.
“That doesn’t matter, Y/N. It matters that you know that I am related to that piece of shit. Before we talk about anything......else.” He insists as he removes his hand from mine and brushes away the tears from my face.
“Why does that matter? You aren’t the same as him. No matter if he raised you or not.” At my words, he hums thoughtfully and shifts closer to me. We sit for a few minutes in silence.
“About that day....what happened....are you ashamed of it?” The question is gentle, careful. Completely unlike him.
Bowing my head, I answer truthfully. “Yes.”
Levi sighs heavily. “I see....I’m sorry, Y/N.” He shifts away and goes to stand as I stop him, reaching out to grasp the sleeve of his shirt.
“I’m ashamed, because you had no choice. I’m ashamed, because I enjoyed it, even though it was forced on you. I’m ashamed because I dream about you, us, at night. I’m ashamed because I don’t regret it, regardless of the circumstances.” I whisper, hot tears running down my face.
He pulls me to him, and forces my chin up with his hand. I see a smile on his face, startling me. “I was ashamed that I enjoyed it too. I couldn’t look at you without remembering how it felt to be inside you, remembering every inch of your body. My only regret was not being able to touch you and make sure it was truly what you wanted.”
A small chuckle escapes him. “But it looks like we don’t have to be ashamed.” He pauses, dryly observing, “It’s a unique way to start a relationship, I’ll admit, but I’m abnormal enough to deal with it. How about you?”
“So what do we do now?” I ask shyly.
“First, I’m going to kiss you. Then I would like to carry you to that big bed in the corner and have the pleasure of removing your clothes myself. Then, I want to touch you, love you, do everything I have been dreaming of since that night. How does that sounds, Y/N?”
“I choose you again, Levi. Kiss me.”

Davekat Fic Recs [P2]
Continuation of my Davekat fic rec list from ye old 2016. An absolute metric shit ton of Damn Good Fics™ have dropped since then, and it’s criminal I haven’t updated that original list in so long.
As per usual with these things, you won’t find much luck here with smut content. Some stories feature scenes, but for the most part, the fics themselves aren’t exclusively about such.
Cheers!
Tumblr media
[Oneshots]
English is Full of Really Shitty Metaphors: You knew you probably shouldn't stay on a planet mostly inhabited by trolls once you finished your adult pupation and your blood color became more apparent. You also knew that you should learn a couple of other languages so that your weren't floundering around like an idiot when you eventually did move. Talking to random aliens on the internet seemed like a really good way to practice.
Fatalistic Humor, or, Jokes to Make Post-Mortem: ‘Head over heels’ is an appropriate turn of phrase because falling in love is exactly like throwing yourself down an endless staircase of inconvenient emotion.
i’m at the combination dunkin donuts & urgent care: Karkat Vantas is convinced beyond a doubt that his neighbor is some variety of murderer, until they actually meet in person. Highlights include blood at the laundromat, Dave's weird obsession with candles, and a box of shitty swords.
In Which a Loser is Sick: IN WHICH A LOSER IS SICK AND TRIES TO DENY IT, A TROLL IS ALSO A LOSER AND TRIES TO DENY IT, PISSING PANTS IS DISCUSSED IN THE SAME LINE OF CONVERSATION AS CALMING DOWN, VRISKA IS MENTIONED BECAUSE OF COURSE SHE IS, SOUP IS MADE AND SUBSEQUENTLY IGNORED, AND AN ACT OF AFFECTION IS REPAID BY THE WEAKENING OF AN IMMUNE SYSTEM. Dave gets sick and Karkat takes care of him.
Pretty Friggin’ MATRIMONIAL: Karkat is planning the proposal to end all proposals, but a clueless Dave has plans of his own.
Rumination: Dave and Karkat do some thinking, talking, kissing, and cuddling. Not necessarily in that order.
Self Sabotage and Other Symptoms of a Damaged Soul: Ok so everyone knows Dave and Dirk had a long amazing talk that presumably ended with Dave asking him for advice on the Being Not Straight stuff. My problem is, Dave also spent three years with his gloriously gay twin sister on a fucking space rock while he was right in the middle of coming to terms with all this stuff. So I wrote this mostly to reconcile the gap I think exists there, with a bunch of other Dave centric stuff thrown in with it.
Shitty Punchlines are the Purest Form of Self-Deprecation: Laying somewhere solidly post-credits and wondering, when do we start feeling like winners? Or is that not part of the package? Where's our fucking GameFAQs guide to navigating these stupid first steps into an eternity processing whatever the FUCK just happened, here? Going through that door was supposed to fix everything. Wasn't it? What's it going to take to fix ourselves?
Sleepwalk: Dave has unfortunate nocturnal habits. Karkat handles them better than anyone might've expected.
Start at the Beginning: Don't stop until eternity. And even then. (Davekat, meteor to can land to earth c and on. Happy anniversary.)
Sweatertown - Population: Two: Dave's cape gets hijacked, but Karkat knows what to do about it.
Tested: Dave and Karkat want to escape Aperture Science Laboratories.
That Cultural Divide: “Dave,” says Karkat neutrally, “why are they beating him up?” And your mouth runs dry.
Valentine’s Day: Valentine's Day through the three years on the meteor.
What to do When Your Boyfriend is Too Hot: Moving to a new universe and a new paradigm brings a lot of changes. And Dave kind of likes the way things were before, back on the Meteor, when he had Karkat all to himself and didn't spend sleepless nights waiting for the shoe to fall.
[Multichap]
About a Time I Failed: A doomed timeline AU. Instead of trolling John, Karkat finds himself scrolling through Dave's entire timeline. He is horrified by what he finds, and ends up in a pseudo-friendship with somewhat reluctant Dave. The story spans the rest of this timeline- Dave and Karkat's budding internet romance, the beta kids becoming friends, the start of SBURB, and, eventually, all of them realizing that Dave and Karkat's diversion from the Alpha Timeline has doomed them all. [Incomplete]
And it’s a Downward Spiral from There: One day, the whole world is going to acknowledge you as that one guy who finally made contact with aliens, but if you had known that getting drunk was going to lead up to abduction, a potential probing, and becoming the worst cult sacrifice this side of the galaxy, you probably would have just stayed at home. [Ongoing]
Astronomy in Reverse: Dave and Karkat are intergalactic pen pals, originally paired together for an extra credit school outreach project. Now, three years of correspondence later, they're best friends... and Karkat is finally immigrating to Earth. [Ongoing]
Breathe: Your name is Dave Strider, and there's nothing good about John and Rose changing schools. Without your twin sister and best friend, you've been left socially crippled at school, and barely coping at home. You're nearly certain that your mental health has been slowly spiraling downhill. You have no clue how you'll last the year to high school graduation. In all this, there's just one single ray of light. Your name is Dave Strider, and there's nothing good about John and Rose changing schools. Except for meeting Karkat Vantas. [Ongoing]
**The Calm is Terrifying When the Storm is All You’ve Known**: There were two kinds of trolls who went to Earth: rich shitheads with too much money and free time, and desperate assholes who couldn’t survive on Alternia, even with the best efforts of the young Condesce. Karkat hated the planet almost immediately, but with his home planet too dangerous for mutants, he really didn’t have any choice but to hide out on this weird little diurnal planet. Nothing Risked, Nothing Lost: Try as he might, Dave remembered nothing from the first four years of his life. There were three signs of imminent upheaval. First, the King of Derse disappeared without a trace. Second, the Queen of Prospit dropped dead. The third sign was the return of long-lost royalty. Not like any of this was Dave's concern. Not the war between Prospit and Derse, not the horrorterrors of the Furthest Ring, not the failings of some dumb monarchs. He was a nobody. Not like Rose, a bona fide Seer of Light. He wasn't sure why she wanted them to go to Derse, but he followed her, anyway. Like he always did. [Hiatus]
Off Court: Your name is Dave Strider, and a hospital wasn’t the setting you had imagined when you thought of seeing your twin again. Your name is Karkat Vantas, and having Terezi drag you around her weird human legislacerator training probably wasn’t the worst way you could spend the rest of your sweeps. And then you meet him. [Ongoing]
Palisades, Palisades: In your memories, you see Dave Strider, fourteen-years-old and made up of lean muscle and awkward limbs that he would still need a few years to grow into fully. Crows surround him, all cawing impatiently, vying for the chicken sandwich in his backpack. He swears loudly as he swings a stick at them, trying to get them to leave him the fuck alone. “Stupid feathery assholes,” he’d always complain once he finally shooed them away. You tear yourself out of the memory. You miss him, and you hate yourself for it. [Complete]
The Red Thing: The first time you ever realised there was something wrong with you, you were two sweeps old. You still remember it like it was just yesterday. You were at the playground in your then-community, which you had long since moved from. You’d been playing ‘tag’ with some of the other young trolls, but had tripped and scraped your knees. One of the other troll’s custodial guardians had noticed what had happened, and wandered over to make sure you were alright. You don’t think you’ll ever forget the look on her face when she picked you up and saw the mutant-red seeping through the knees of your pants. Things spiraled downhill quickly after that. You’d never quite understood what was happening when you were young, but you’d known that you’d become an outcast. Other trolls around you started to avoid you. Sometimes they’d throw things at you – food, stones, anything that might hurt you. Other times, they’d call you names – mistake, mutant, freak. You preferred when they tried to hurt you. At least then you could fight back. [Ongoing]
space cowboy disaster zone: Your name is Karkat Vantas, and these nights you eke out a quiet living on Antoren-3, helping around the Caltira Inn or scavenging out in the rust plains. It’s a simple life, and the only excitement you get for the most part is from the stories of other scavengers, a handful of bar fights, and the occasional salvageable wreck. Fresh wrecks, you’ve only seen a handful of times, and when John spots the telltale streak of light from a distant crash in the middle of a rust storm, you’re eager to get first dibs on whatever it might contain, the elements be damned. You don’t expect a survivor. [Ongoing]
Stepping Stones: A series of vignettes concerning the evolution of the relationship between Karkat Vantas and Dave Strider. Or, the troll title: IN WHICH DAVE AND KARKAT DISCUSS THE VARIOUS DIFFERENCES BETWEEN HUMAN AND TROLL GENITALS, THERE IS AN AWKWARD CONFESSION OF EMOTIONS, DAVE AND DIRK FINISH THEIR CONVERSATION ON THE ROOFTOP, DAVE GETS SOME ADVICE FROM A FEW OF THE LADIES IN HIS LIFE, AND THERE IS A SMUTTY EPILOGUE. [Complete]
The Stories We Tell Ourselves: Dave was silent. YES. YOU. The voice answered him before he even had a chance to speak up and voice his confusion or curiosity with a lack of delicacy only a child was capable of. It had a harsh way of speaking, brash enough to be rude and so loud the sound of his voice practically echoed off his skull. In it he could feel the rich, crimson flow of blood, the drip, drip, of molten lava degrading stone so ancient not even the gods of old would have lived to see it form. A being so old, so vast, that even to speak his name would grant one with immeasurable power. It made him shudder, little hands clenching into fists against rough stone. HUMAN CHILD. In which Dave is alone and Dragons exist. Shenanigans ensue. [Ongoing]
Stow Away: Calm and collected, that's Dave Strider. The docking station around him is chaotic and loud but he is like ice, cool and clear. None of that is true of course, but nobody is looking closely enough to notice the way his hands shake and his eyes dart around underneath the opaque plastic of his vintage sunglasses. Dave Strider sneaks on board an Alternian ship in an attempt to flee his shitty situation on Earth. This is the first of many questionable decisions. [Complete]
Time Displacement: Side A: After the events of the game, Dave wakes up in a universe that is familiarly unfamiliar. Sburb didn't happen, all their guardians are alive, and Bro is...different. [Ongoing]
Transcend: Dave doesn't get troll romance, but that's okay because Karkat is bad at it anyway. A journey through all four quadrants and a bit more. [Complete]

Criminal Minds (tvN), First Impressions
I was very hesitant to watch this in fear of failed expectations, but I gave it a shot. Thank God for class suspensions.
First things first: Criminal Minds (tvN) reunited Kim Young Chul's Grand Prince Suyang and Moon Chae Won's Lee Se Ryung! (Ahh, The Princess Man.)
Anyway, for a procedural drama, I think this remake will fare well. It wasn't as dark as I was anticipating (Secret Forest set the bar high, you know.), but it was entertaining enough. Being a fan of the original Criminal Minds, I have my expectations (I didn't marathon until season 8 during my undergraduate years for nothing). Even Criminal Minds: Beyond Borders wasn't safe to my scrutiny the first time I watched it, but that version was interesting because of how it integrated psychology and culture in solving its cases. This time, I may find myself endeared to this version because of how it meshes the characters' lives into the case solving, but at the same time, it may limit my love to only the characters involved. Also, the main difference I guess between this in the original is that this version would rather tell you what happens instead of showing you how it happens. I do not want to be left underwhelmed, and would hope for more "oomph" in the next episode/s.
As for the characters, I think it's LJG's Kim Hyun Joon who I easily warmed up to, followed by Son Hyun Joo's Kang Ki Hyung. The latter just nails his role*. I didn't watch SHR, sue me, but this guy is so charismatic he's got me waiting for all his scenes. He definitely is that kind of actor that is so visceral in his interpretation of characters. I am wowed. As for his role, I like how he's cynical of profiling even if he's good at it himself. Kang Ki Hyung, on the other hand, got me because of his emotional baggage and his dedication to his family. I want to nitpick everything about him. As for the other characters, I haven't really warmed up to them yet. (MCW, when she's with LJG, is doing it for me.) Their counterparts (JJ, Penelope, and Spencer my love) are all my babies, and I'm just sad that they're not doing it for me at this point. It doesn't bode well for them on my book, but we'll see.
Other points of interest:
*I like that Lee Joon Gi's Kim Hyun Joon is quite cool with a hint of asshole-ishness on the side. Seriously, he fits being swag and sexy so well. It's so irrelevant to point out how his hips swayed when he turned around at some point while he's retracing the victim's last steps before abduction, but I need to point it out because damn suave man.
Are they selling MCW's Sun Woo and LJG's Hyun Joon? It's working for me. Sassy puppers profiling each other on point. I am amused. I like them.
So Hyun Joon has shit to pick up with Team Leader Kang? Now that will be interesting to see. Apparently, there's a huge misunderstanding because communication lines were broken (Did I interpret it right? Sang Hyun did select "PASS" upon the command of the the higher ranking officer instead of Team Leader Kang’s “BYPASS”.) after Hyun Joon got jittery for sending his friend/mentee to disable the bomb. But still, people died.
P.S. This unsub looks really nice. Inappropriate, I know.

Avengers: Endgame
We finally get a little taste of the next Avengers tale with that Avengers: Endgame trailer. It doesn’t tell us too much and the glimpses we get only ask more questions. It also gives us a quick look at what’s up with the two biggest Marvel Cinematic Universe heroes to skip out on Infinity War in Ant-Man and Hawkeye. Both were described as being under house arrest in the last movie, but now we see Hawkeye’s back in action...albeit not in the most mentally healthy way.
In his scant seconds in the Avengers: Endgame trailer, we see Jeremy Renner as Clint Barton cleaning off a used sword while standing over a handful of goons who are probably dead. Instead of his SHIELD uniform, he’s dressed in an armored ninja costume. He’s no longer Hawkeye, but Ronin.
But who is Ronin, exactly?
Originally, Ronin had little to do with Clint Barton unless you considered him a red herring. Brian Michael Bendis was writing Avengers in the mid-2000s and gave us Avengers: Disassembled, a chaotic storyline that killed off a handful of Avengers members. Hawkeye was one of those victims, getting blown up in a fight against a Kree invasion that was ultimately conjured up by an insane Scarlet Witch.
Shortly after this story, Bendis started up a new Avengers series...New Avengers. Rather than go for a more classic line-up, he got a bit unorthodox. Captain America and Iron Man returned as representatives of the old guard. Spider-Man and Wolverine were brought in due to Bendis’ belief that if the Avengers are Marvel’s Justice League, then they should have the most popular characters. Spider-Woman and Luke Cage acted as Marvel mainstays who needed a day in the sun. Then you had the two wildcards in the Sentry – an X-factor of a hero who had only appeared in a miniseries at that point – and Ronin.
Ronin appeared on many New Avengers covers despite not showing up until the eleventh issue. In the speculation, many felt that Ronin was supposed to be Daredevil in a new disguise for some reason. After all, Bendis was also in the middle of his legendary Daredevil run at the time. Bendis later admitted that that was the original plan, but it wouldn’t have worked out.
Instead, when they finally got around to telling Ronin’s story, they made hints that this mysterious ninja was not just a woman, but Elektra. She was an associate with Daredevil, Captain America said he didn’t approve of her history with the Kingpin, and we got to see what looked like her hair from behind. Also, her mission involved taking on the Hand, which is totally an Elektra thing to do.
But there was a bit of a hint of Ronin’s true identity. An army of ninjas was able to sneak up behind her. Sure, they’re supposed to be stealthy, but there were so many of them that you’d have to be deaf not to notice. Sure enough, by the time the Ronin storyline finished up, she unmasked to reveal she was Echo, otherwise known as Maya Lopez. A former flame of Matt Murdock’s and adopted daughter of Wilson Fisk, Echo was introduced in the Daredevil comic right before Bendis took over (David Mack and Joe Quesada were the creative team at the time, and they created Echo). Much like Daredevil, she had enhanced abilities despite a physical handicap, only it was deafness instead of blindness.
That quick Ronin story was about all there was for Echo’s relevancy, though. It was the hazard of Bendis’ writing. He would write interesting scenarios for the New Avengers, but he’d stretch it out so long that he was too busy catching up with the big Marvel events going on to really explore his ideas. That plot thread would rest for a while as Marvel books dedicated themselves to House of M and Civil War, two other major storylines.

During yet another big Marvel event, House of M, Scarlet Witch rewrote reality so that mutants were in charge. She also magically brought Hawkeye back to life with no memory of the original timeline or his death. He eventually regained those memories and it put him on a dark path that would last for several years, including a couple attempts to straight-up murder Scarlet Witch in the name of revenge. When the world returned to normal (albeit with most mutants depowered), Hawkeye remained alive, but went on his own path.
While they’re a bit more open to it these days, having two superheroes share the same name at the same time in Marvel is something they usually go out of their way to avoid. One of the two has to die, be taken out of commission, or simply change their name. Since Marvel had just introduced a new Hawkeye in Young Avengers (Kate Bishop) and Clint was no longer dead, that meant a new identity.
Clint gave up on his revenge plot, but was less than thrilled to hear that Captain America died in the aftermath of Civil War. Even for a guy who was brought back from the dead, Clint was about to have a string of bad times. Stark offered him the shield as the new Captain America, but Clint refused. It wasn’t for him and he wasn’t exactly pleased with Stark in general.
Meanwhile, Echo’s adventures against the Hand got her captured, killed, and resurrected by their new leader Elektra. The anti-Stark Avengers team went on a mission to rescue her and with them was a new Ronin. We didn’t get many hints on the identity this time other than it not being Matt Murdock.
A flashback showed the truth: Clint visited New Avengers member Doctor Strange and came across the rest of the rebel team, all confused that he was alive. He offered to join them in their Echo rescue mission, but didn’t want to be Hawkeye anymore. Wolverine instead gave him the Ronin costume.

It worked out, though. Yet another flashback revealed that in their early Avengers days, Captain America taught Hawkeye how to fight with more than a bow and arrow. Kicking ass with katanas and martial arts was Clint’s own way of honoring his fallen leader. After Echo was safe, she let Clint keep the identity, seeing as she didn’t need it and she felt that he did, at least for a little while.
Then the bad times really started to kick in.
Secret Invasion was going on and that meant there were heroes all over who were secretly shape-shifting Skrulls meant to take over the planet. This included some that weren’t aware of the truth, such as one posing as Hawkeye's dead wife Mockingbird. She knew some incredibly intimate facts about their relationship, but she was just another fake. Clint, in an act of rage, gunned down the confused alien and ranted about how he was going to go genocidal on the invaders.
He does manage to kill a few Skrulls, and in context, that's kinda good. The end of the invasion means that Norman Osborn is now in charge of everything military and superhero-related in the government and that’s bad. The real Mockingbird turns out to be alive after all and that’s good. She does point out that she divorced him before she was abducted by Skrulls and that’s bad.
Ronin would lead the New Avengers, who were more of a rebel team than ever before because Osborn had his own team of Dark Avengers wearing their identities and every good guy was on their shit list. Osborn being in charge – not to mention mass murderer Bullseye dressing up as the new Hawkeye – drove Clint to wanting to straight-up assassinate the weird-haired dickhead. He went on a one-man mission to just that and failed because Osborn had crazy plot armor back then.
Clint didn’t die either because, come on, they weren’t going to kill a guy so fresh from stepping out of the grave.

Luckily, good things started happening for our man Clint. Steve Rogers came back from the dead and led the team again, including putting an end to Norman Osborn’s reign of terror. The Superhero Registration Act finally died. Clint and Mockingbird started having fun adventures together. He started dating Spider-Woman. Being an Avenger no longer had a scummy stigma to it. Scarlet Witch even chilled out a bit. Things were back to normal enough that Clint could be himself. He was alive and he could live his life.
And so, there would be two Hawkeyes coexisting. The grim, katana-wielding ninja would find his stride as a dopey archer with a sidekick and a one-eyed, pizza-loving dog.
As for “Ronin,” the gimmick got used plenty more in the main Marvel universe and beyond. The Red Guardian and even Blade wore the mask. In the Ultimate Universe, it was just another identity for Moon Knight. Even on the Japanese cartoon Marvel Disk Wars: The Avengers, Ronin ended up being a secret identity for Nozomu Akatsuki, benevolent scientist and father of the protagonists, who was mind-controlled by Loki.

While Ronin is a fun way for Marvel to add mystery to their stories, it truly found the most meaning in its Clint Barton days. He didn’t truly need to wear the black costume. It simply represented that he was going through a very bad time. Experiencing death, having your heart broken, losing a close friend, being vilified for being a good person, and seeing the world go to Hell could break a person.
So could having your beloved family turn to dust because of the acts of a Mad Titan.
