what's a language you like but don't speak?
(Also, how many do you speak? Ik Dutch and English but anything else?)
ohhh many! i always love the sound of arabic, I think it sounds really... melodic, I think is the way to describe it??? in a way that dutch and english don't. also italian and spanish jump to mind, I am not immune to romance languages <3
i only speak dutch and english! I took 6 years' worth of french in secondary school but I always struggled with it (bc dyslexia) and eventually my teachers decided I was hopeless enough that I could switch out french for another subject (business economics) at the very last minute to at least give me a shot at passing all my final exams. (I still didn't, on account of having missed a year's worth of business economics classes and exams because i'd made the switch at the very last minute)
to this day I can (shockingly) still understand basic french but speaking is wayyy too complex. I truly can barely string together a sentence and always shamefully have to rely on english when I'm in a french-speaking country 😭 je me regrette mes amis.... je suis trying

choosing to give lucy the headcanon of semi-fluency in french (<- language credit in college that she kept actively trying to keep useful) solely so that she can speak to ezio when he bleeds over through desmond. he is also only technically fluent, and his french is like six hundred years older than hers. something about the two of them being able to communicate but neither in their first language…

like my spanish knowledge or lack thereof is rly funny coz i never learned it formally i just picked it up from a tv show i binged but my brain sectioned off a whole new corner just for spanish so i CAN switch to spanish like i would for other languages (in fact after the whole tv show debacle i spent days not being able to switch away from spanish mode and thus not understanding what ppl were saying coz my brain kept interpreting both english and hungarian as spanish and refused to process it any other way) but my vocab is like nonexistent so the grammar and the will is there but the knowledge is not. EXCEPT that the show was la casa de papel aka a show about bank robberies so most of the vocab i do know is related to that. so like i can say robber or hostage or gold or kill her or shut the fuck up but until i got here i didnt know how to like, say good evening

every day i think abt this tumblr post in which a us-american was incredibly fascinated by two girls they saw who were speaking english & japanese interchangably. because, like, i speak three languages interchangably on the daily. that’s normal to me. i’m not even fluent in french (been learning it at school for 10 years now tho lmao) but there’s enough french words & phrases i use on the daily. if i can’t remember a (swiss) german word/saying/etc while talking in german i just substitude with english because most people i talk to are fluent in both anyways. i greet my little brother in french and then go on to ask if he wants to go and by ramunae with me sometime, in swiss german, in the same breath, and i answer overmorrow when he asks me when because i think it’s a funkier word than übermorn.
i think about that post every day and i genuinly wonder how someone can grow up and never learn another language. how do you live without this? without the pressure to speak at least two of your country’s four official languages? without the pressure of learning the world’s language as a second/third? without ever seeing all the beauty in knowing more than one language, and being able to understand so much more of the world?
#idk#only speaking one language is strange to me in the way speaking more than one is strange to people who only speak one#i love languages and while i hate (learning) french i am also somewhat grateful i’m forced to tbh#i can read french stuff and understand!! isn’t that amazing? that i am fluent in swiss german german english AND understand basic french?#maybe this is also abt growing up speaking a language with no written rules. simply grouped into german with a hundered dialects more#i am aware it’s hard to classify but german will never be my language the way swiss german is#or they way i made english mine#and sometimes it’s hard to have a mother tongue under a false name bc yes. i do speak german. but german will never be my mother tongue#even if i’m forced to call it that#and yeah i’m aware of the insane privilege i have over ppl speaking forbidden languages etc#but sometimes. sometimes i mourn that my mother tongue will never be a ‘real’ language because it lacks written rules and formality#even if it’s the language i speak with my family & my friends & my teachers during breaks & it’s the first language i ever spoke#but that doesn’t make it real enough for people classificating it. because my family & my friends & my teachers all speak their own+#personal variant of it & i know no 2 people speaking the exact same swiss german even if they are twins+#& you cannot classify a million swiss germans for every swiss german speaker there is#and i think that is beautiful but i also think that is sad because i will never have a ‘real’language to call mine except english.#& english is my third.#☆—`elys rambles

ok but leo is hands down my favorite language learning tool yet
like not duolingo not deutche-welle not anything else. what i need is a good handy dictionary which can later become a flashcard. gamechanger. always has my back.

Having mutuals who speak multiple languages is so funny to me because they’ll talk in something other than English and I’ll be like. Go off king/queen in absolute confusion 👯‍♂️💫

hey angels, does anyone here who writes in 3 or 4 languages have any tips on how not to get everything mixed and tangled up in your head as you expand your vocabulary and start writing more complex sentences?

we think we've successfully given ourselves a habit that we can actually fulfill cuz like. we forget to do our german vocab stuff right. like normally. and then the next day it says we need to memorize 100 different cards because we performed sin. (normally its 30-40 which is annoying but can be done in 15 mins). and you know we think if we saw 100 cards to review normally we simply wouldn't but alas when we actually remember it we do it. and then it only takes 5 minutes more than 30 card reviews! maybe learning german isn't a losing battle maybe we can do it

A few times a year I get the urge to learn basically every language ever and then I give up because I get too ambitious. So my new rule is I’m never allowed to not be learning a language. I have to do at least one language lesson per day for the rest of my life
#i’ve been learning italian since december#i feel like i know greetings and pleasantries really well and i have a decent grasp of pronunciation#(i know a little french and spanish so the sounds aren’t unfamiliar to me)#i can string together basic sentences on a few everyday subjects and would feel confident ordering food or doing basic shopping in italian#i don’t think i could do more than that and would probably fall to pieces if someone said a word i didn’t know#definitely i have no business picking up another language when i’m still so far of where i want to be in italian since i’m not understandin#media i consume in the language; wouldn’t feel able to converse at length in the language etc#so tell me why i picked up greek this past week#i’m trying to prioritise italian so right now i’m just focusing on the greek alphabet and learning to read greek#since i have a really hard time learning new alphabets and i don’t feel comfortable proceeding until i can break down a word and read it#i would say i can recognise the entire greek alphabet but i don’t have all the sounds and names memorised and can’t really read yet#so tell me why i want to pick up welsh#i know bore da. prynhawn da. ellen dw i. draig#i’m 1/4 welsh so i would like to learn at some point#my levels of french and spanish are about the same as my italian but rustier since it’s been a while#i have vague plans of improving them but not any time in the near future#so what i’m thinking is i try to learn 3 languages at once. i mean why not right#people do this. i think?#i saw about this kid whose dad is trying to teach him about a hundred languages and he did a video in some of them#and people were saying most of them were pretty terrible but there were a few (german; japanese; native language of tamil) were pretty good#so that proves you can maybe do this?#idk. girl i’m really high don’t ask me#personal
