1976: Lee Trevino wins the Colonial Invitational for his 1st victory in his home state of Texas Lee Trevino, shaken and unsteady and with his game on the verge of collapse, parlayed a lucky break into a birdie that turned back Mike Morley and enabled him to win the Colonial national invitation golf tournament today. It was the first victory of his pro career in Texas. Fact: In 1975 there was no Colonial Invitational…Instead Colonial Country Club hosted the 1975 Players Championship eventually won by Al Geiberger. Morley, who had yet to win on the pro tour, came from five shots off the pace, took the lead at one time and was tied with Trevino for the top spot when they went to the tee on the 16th hole, a 200‐yard par three. Trevino hit his tee shot to the right. The ball hit a bank… well off the green, kicked dead left, trickled onto the green and rolled to within 12 feet of the cup. Morley two‐putted for par and the usually joking Trevino, grim‐faced and unsmiling in the building pressure, rammed in the putt for a birdie that gave him the lead. Trevino broke the longest victory drought of his career —14 months—with a closing 73, three over par, and a 72hole total of 273, seven under par. Morley finished second with a 69 and a 274 total. Morley, 29 years old, had to sink a 20‐foot putt for a birdie on the last hole in order to tie Trevino, but he left it inches short. Tom Weiskopf, a former winner at Colonial who played in the last threesome with Trevino and Morley, birdied the last hole from eight feet for a 71 that enabled him to tie 46‐year‐old Don January for third place at 277. Trevino’s victory in his home state was a long‐time goal for the swaggering, happy‐go‐lucky player. The last event he won was the Florida Citrus open on March 9, 1975. At this event, he won $40,000 of the total purse of $200,000. i see this as the TV Dinner era of the web. Sure, we used to have loose food but it was a bother putting it together into a meal each night. Now we have tv dinners. They aren't all that tasty, but they're ok. What'll it be tonight, sara lee or hungry man?

but sometime in the 90s it seemed like everyone realized that tv dinners were actually not all that great. sure, there's still frozen food and prepared microwaveable food, but now we buy that a la carte and assemble our meals piecemeal (unless you drink soylent...). you can look at it another way: the early 20th century sears roebuck company was a power to behold, you could buy everything from it. now it's a bargain anchor store at vanishing malls.

Why did department stores go away? Why have we abandoned tv dinners? You could say that the past 20 years have been exceptional: a time of remarkable choosiness culminating in a world when people had time to make small batch pourover coffees or individually agonize over the preparation of their $8 avocado toasts. Maybe that era was the anomaly.

You can think about soylent in this way too: soylent is the acknowledgement that most time you're eating fancyish food that isn't all that great, but maybe one meal out of ten, you'd like to actually eat something nicely prepared. Are and mass market media news that way? honestly, most of the time i don't want to read 5 minute hot takes (this one excepted, of course) and boring summaries, instead i'd rather spend less time with higher bandwidth media rather than continually gobbling down the drumbeat of cnn, msnbc or twitter. Sometimes i like listening to top40 hits on the radio, though.

i think there's something oddly laudable about breathtaking uniformity: moving everyone's content to your platform and giving them the option of changing the url and banner image. it's democratizng in a way, but it's also (to recall the arguments about the kindle or later instapaper) hard to discern who or what you're reading. was that think piece on free code camp or friendship.js?

the sad truth though is that the restaurant industry is not a profit faucet—many fail and most operate at a loss until you factor in liquor and wine sales. if you're looking to rake in the cash, factoring the recalls, there's probably more money to be made in selling golfball hashbrowns.

On this day, In 1980 Lee Trevino outlasts Ben Crenshaw to win the Players Championship On this day, In 1980 Lee Trevino won the Players Championship at Sawgrass Country Club in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida. He did so by holding off a barrage of the games great players including Jack Nicklaus, Gary Player, and Ben Crenshaw. Trevino was paired with The Golden Bear and the Black Knight in the final round, leading to Trevino to call them the "7 million dollar club" referring to their combined earnings. When asked if Trevino was impressed by his playing partners he replied, "Hell no, I'm one of the biggies, too." -Lee Trevino That's the confidence of a true winner!.... Starting the final round Trevino watched Nicklaus and Payer both birdie the first hole while he bogeyed the second. On the lastl day, it was a "who's who" of the golfing world. You had Trevino leading the pack with Nicklaus, Player, Ben Crenshaw, Tom Watson, and Seve Ballesteros all contending at one point or another. Trevino shot a final round of 70, 2 under par for a total of 278. Crenshaw had the hot putter in the round, turning in a final round of 66, good enough for sole second place.
