It’s time to talk about ‘Anora’

What. Is. Happening?!
I’ve been following the Academy Awards since the mid 90s and writing about it since the early 2000s. I’ve never seen an Oscar season this crazy.
Things were crazy enough before this weekend, given the various controversies surrounding Emilia Pérez and the AI controversy around The Brutalist. But things reached a new level of chaos this weekend with the Critics Choice, Directors Guild, and Producers Guild Awards.
Sean Baker’s Anora took home the top prize in each of the three ceremonies, something not even the sharpest of award season pundits were predicting.
With many of this year’s big Oscar races wide open and little consensus emerging from the various award shows up to this point, this series of high-profile wins for the small, indie film catapults it into pole position for the Academy Award for Best Picture.
So, how did Anora manage to suddenly become this year’s Oscars’ frontrunner?
I propose that it wasn't so sudden. The support behind Anora has been there throughout award season but was merely veiled by the flurry of fancy toward Emilia Pérez. Jacques Audiard’s attempt at a modern opera was stealing all the attention, particularly around the time of the Golden Globes. It was the kind of movie people thought they should throw their support behind, even if it wasn’t their cup of tea.
Emilia Pérez eventually won Best Comedy/Musical at the Globes over Anora, which had been lauded by critics since May. Anora came away from the night empty-handed. And in a case study of how award shows can sway momentum, when the Oscar nominations were announced two weeks later, Emilia Pérez had amassed an inexplicable 13 nods.
Once the wheels started to come off for Emilia Pérez, though, the love behind Anora was able to shine through. Remember — critics were hailing this movie as the Best Film of the Year all the way back in May when it won the Palme d'Or at Cannes.
This weekend’s results shows that the industry appreciates it more than even Brady Corbet’s The Brutalist, which many hail as a masterpiece akin to The Godfather. But while some may shun The Brutalist’s 3.5-hour runtime, many seem charmed by Anora’s intriguing characters and its whirlwind of a plot.
If we acknowledge that award show results do, in fact, sway the industry, then Anora surely comes out of this weekend with all the momentum heading into some of the season’s most significant ceremonies.
BAFTA voting closes on Tuesday. Anora’s not really a favorite there (that may be Conclave), but who knows how this weekend’s results might influence voters. It might even inject some fuel into Mikey Madison’s chances for Best Actress, if not for Best Director or Best Film.
But the biggest impact may just be on Oscar voting itself. Finals voting opens this Tuesday, with Academy members coming off the weekend feeling all the love for Anora. Any other wins along the way — BAFTA and WGA are both during the voting period — could mean that Anora might just become “the little movie that could.”
