‘you’re mad.’ is the first thing hyuck had said.
@consilian )
well not the first, but the first thing she could register. what with how ahyeon practically barged in their apartment ( bold on her because she knows the rules about being seen and being discreet ) and how june had mumbled a few things when he answered before whizzing out the warpath she was set on ( bless his heart ). ahyeon was red from her cheeks to the steam practically sizzling from her ears.
which is unusual, unlike her and the demure demeanor she’s adopted for the sake of her team. of her sanity really. she’s upset and it wouldn’t take a scientist to figure it out but it’s something special about the way hyuck calls it. it takes him a minute though, because mine says something and though ahyeon doesn’t fully register it, she’s fuming enough to throw her purse in his direction.
( something about how girls aren’t allowed in the man-cave - he could barely finish before hyuck was jumping in the way of the attack )
jumping in the way of it and jumping to her side, a hand hesitant at her side while ahyeon keeps her fists closed, cheeks puffed, anger simmering.
‘you’re mad.’ he states it again, this time when they’ve escaped to the rooftop. this time when she’s sat on the carpet, something white and soft that they’ve allowed her to add to their little escape. he says it while nursing the beer in his hand, carefully, almost in how he’s addressing her. because ahyeon isn’t like this, she isn’t a firecracker like her sister. she rarely gets mad, and very rarely breaks the character she’s been assigned.
vaguely, she wonders how long she’s had it on. how long it’s been since her looks fashioned an image for her before anyone got to know her. she wonders exactly when she stopped remembering that there were other sides to her, sides that could be upset, that could sit atop a dusty rooftop nursing a beer and rambling about the things that annoy her.
it takes a lot she can admit that. arum was always quicker to emotions than her and ahyeon attributes that to the maturity she’s had to grow into in order to train properly and accept this lifestyle. it was inevitable, but at the time she didn’t think of the sacrifice. maturity and a death of necessary emotions. a loss of the humanity of it by the simple label.
ice doll.
now, with her fingers gripped in the blanket hyuck’s given her, anger and embarrassment causing her body to burn, her nose to flare. she feels anything but, and the look hyuck gives her almost makes her want to shrink back.
“i’m not mad.” said through gritted teeth, whispered as she feels more shame than anger seep in.
‘you threw your purse at minjae.’
true. ahyeon pulls the blanket further up, blocking hyuck’s smug grin and focusing on the skyline that greets her. she had, she’d thrown it and been close to throwing the closest thing after that. that’s areum’s thing. arum’s got enough emotions for the both of them.
“i---” she can’t bring herself to apologize. she can’t bring herself to disagree, not with heck. but she can’t bring herself to admit anything either. the shame burns words from her cheeks back into her chest. it contracts and tightens and she feels all the reasons that she shuts off to everyone starting to seep back in.
‘it’s fine if you are.’
when ahyeon peeks out hyuck’s smiling at her. no smug grin, no brow arched in amusement at her misfortune. just a smile, simple and lacking judgement. he’s smiling that damn goofy grin that makes everything seem okay, that makes her want to close the distance on the carpet and lean against him until she can breathe again. she doesn’t move though, she just watches.
‘it’s fine if you’re mad. minjae probably deserved the shoe.’
“he did.”
‘whoever has you this red, might deserve a shoe too.’
“i’m not red.”
ahyeon’s first mistake was thinking that hyuck wasn’t good at reading her emotions. her second mistake was thinking that he had the same reservations about their distance that she had. because he’s leaning over instantly, eyes only leaving her own to fall on her cheeks and back up.
‘you’re literally red down to your neck.’ that forces ahyeon to pull everything back up. if she’s considering commenting that the anger isn’t the only reason for the god-awful flush on her body she doesn’t hint at it. ‘there’s nothing wrong with being upset. or throwing a tantrum.’
“i know.”
‘do you?’
he’s moved back now, taken his eyes off her as well. ahyeon breathes again, breathes and allows the blanket to fall back down into her lap. allows the flush to simmer and her breathing to even out. she doesn’t move her gaze though, keeps her eyes on the boy who has no trouble slowing down her heart-rate and picking it up whenever he pleases.
‘you want to talk about it?’
she doesn’t. because the thought makes her upset. the very idea of what caused such a rile out of her is still fresh and stung in her mind.
“no.”
because it’s pointless. to discuss how her members are always watching dramas in the living room. and ahyeon, ever the team player agrees to the bonding sessions. she agrees despite how personal they can get. when it’s near midnight and they start opening up about escapades and experiences. when they start talking about simple dreams of dating and romance. when they start questioning each other.
questioning her.
‘i would think you’d be more into prince charming type boys’ mihyeon had said.
‘not quite sure what you see in him, i guess he’s cute?’ sooyoung had chimed.
‘you’re not dating no but he doesn’t show any of these qualities.’ soobin added.
‘it’s just so weird that out of all of them you’ve chosen - well him.’ erin finished.
that was the end of it because by that point ahyeon had excused herself. she heard whispers of ‘she’s mad’ and ‘she's always so sensitive’ before the door closed behind her. with the excuse of a late night run in the air she’d marched here. marched with all the words she didn’t say on her tongue. words that’s now tumbling out as she thinks about it, thinks about whether she does want to talk about it or not.
“it’s just not their business.” who do they think they are? “why does everyone seem so concerned with what i do and who i make company with?” why can’t she be left alone. why can’t people stop trying to understand and label her? “who cares if you’re not prince charming to them?” who cares what they think of him? ahyeon does. she cares a lot. she cares enough to break a character she’s worked so hard to maintain. “it’s nobody’s business.” her business is always their business. “they don’t even know you.”
‘me?’
that’s when ahyeon realizes how much she’s been spilling out loud. that’s when she realizes hyuck is watching her yet again. smug grin is back, but with something softer in his eyes. she drills it into her head that it’s just the flicker of fairy lights behind him. it has to be.
she’s stuck between diving under the blanket and holding her ground. she feels her cheeks reddening again and succeeds in turning her head first.
‘don’t worry about it.’
“it’s nobody’s business.”
‘then don’t entertain it.’
ahyeon huffs. hyuck laughs.
he makes it easy. all of it. skipping over the outburst and the confusion and the anger. skipping over it and coming back to something simple. simple like him watching her, nose turned and on the offense, and still opening his arm for her. simple like ahyeon sliding over despite how her chest thumps it might be a bad idea. she slides close. close enough that hyuck could comment on it but he doesn’t. he sits and lets her whisper about the drama, whisper about the comments that were made and about her own anger. he sits and listens to her, doesn’t comment on how out of character it is, or how silly it might.
he listens, soothes a breath down her back when she gets worked up, and laughs even when he shouldn’t. because she laughs too. and then she’s smiling.
and it’s forgotten.
‘you don’t think i’m prince charming material?’
“i don’t think you need to be.” hyuck shrugs and ahyeon wants to tell him more. wants to tell him that he’s everything he needs to be just by being. that he’s everything she doesn’t need to ask for and everything she didn’t know she would need, or want. he’s all that by being and he doesn’t need to be anything else. she wouldn’t ask for it. wouldn’t ask for him in a fancy suit, a fancy car. wouldn’t ask for stuffy manners and a archetype meant to sell teenage dreams. all she asks for is this, his shoulder beneath her head and his arm around her. his laugh, a little cheeky and deserving of an elbow to the side, his words a little rough and still welcoming.
him, gentle in all the ways that only she understands. just how she’s warm in all the ways the media wouldn’t understand. couldn’t understand.
that’s all she wants.
“why are you grinning?”
‘nothing...just didn’t know you were into bad boys.’
“i - i’m not into - you’re not even - lee donghyuck.”
‘hmm?’
he’s grinning down at her again and ahyeon’s heart stutters, stutters all the way through to her words. her fingers fidget in the blanket and her legs bump against his when they start to kick. his smile, enough to send a shockwave, no grand gestures, not cheesy words, just a smile.
“wipe that smile off your face.”
‘i will when that blush comes off yours.’
this time ahyeon does nudge him. immediately regretting it when he’s pulling her down with him and the blanket topple over them both. when now her back is flush against the carpet and heck’s hovered over, hands planted and preventing him from falling on her. this time with less of a smile and more of an owlish look that reminds her just of that boyish charm he has.
“not very prince charming like.”
‘you’re not complaining.’
she’s not. she couldn’t. because every other word is swallowed in favor of the space between them closing, tightening around her entire body. each brush of the blanket as it covers them sending shivers through her.
“i’m waiting for you to decide what’s happening next.”
‘what do you want to happen?’
i want to stay here forever. she wants to wrap her hands around her neck, pull him and never let go. she wants to block everyone’s words from her mind with a simple tug. but,
“i want hot chocolate.”
ahyeon hears herself breathe when hyuck laughs. she feels the laugh vibrate against her skin, against the air between them and just a tad against her heartstrings.
‘we can get hot chocolate.’
“now?”
‘maybe not now.’
she doesn’t argue. she doesn’t move either but, she’s not about to dwell on that. it’s enough to know that he’s fine with where they are, with what they are.
it’s enough.
