bubba's father helps open casinos all over the united states, her mother is best selling author.

luke coins her the nickname "bubba" as she chews hubba bubba gum all. the. time.

she lived in des moines, iowa until she was ten, because her father was promoted to the position he is in now.

she has lived in new york, san diego, tampa, and most recently, las vegas.

her mother is a stay at home mom, spending her free time writing mystery & horror novels.

although bubba is loved dearly by her parents, they weren't always around and when they were, they were busy with work or stressed out.

bubba took to horseback riding in her free time, which she had a lot of.

bubba wasn't the happiest about moving to michigan, but her mind quickly changed when she saw the house and the view.

Friendship bracelets & fan-cams - The 'fangirlification' of Motorsports

It’s no secret that motorsports and sports in general are seeing a surge in popularity. Formula One enjoyed a crowd of 1.3 million watching the Las Vegas Grand Prix, a brand new track with no history. But is this due to organic interest in the sport? Out of these 1.3 million, how many turned the race on for the first time with no expectations except to see fast cars zip through a street circuit? Or did they watch with an expectation, with the basic knowledge that can only come from consuming content on social media? 

Shows like Drive to Survive (Formula One) and There Can Only Be One (MotoGP) have a reputation to be dramatized, fans of the shows labeled as ‘DTS fans’ and not true fans of the sport. This, unfortunately, is a common occurrence in many fan circles, affecting mainly women and younger fans, pushing them away from the sport. Mention your interest in Formula one or MotoGP around a certain group and expect to be quizzed on what DRS stands for or on what happened in Sepang between Valentino Rossi and Marc Marquez. Name a popular driver and brace yourself to be accused of liking them for their looks.

But there has been a change, not a sudden one, but a change that has been long coming.

The online fan-spaces of sports have slowly filled by more women, sharing their opinions, ‘live-tweeting’ and ‘live-blogging’ their reactions. It’s become a trend to make races an event with bracelet trading and painted shirts. This isn’t anything new, Japanese fans are known to flood Suzuka with intricate hats, each bigger than the last. The Tifosi (fans of historic team Ferrari) are known to come dressed in elaborate costumes. Popes, Priests and many more religious figures flock to Imola and Monza to bless the Ferrari Drivers. You can joke that Charles Leclerc enjoys a fan-base of mostly younger women, but the dedication Italian men show to him cannot be topped.

Even the teams and the sport itself are embracing the new attention from their fan circles. Duracell, battery manufacturers and sponsors of the Williams F1 team, have jumped in head first, posting ‘fan-cam Fridays’ of drivers Alex Albon and Logan Sargent. Ferrari has even joined in, fans joking that the team posts ‘thirst traps’ of the drivers when they don't live up to standards. MotoGP takes a more subtle route, their latest campaign ‘under the skin’ an intimate look into the scars and tattoos of the riders. But the upturned eyes and soft lighting feels less than educational.

But is this a healthy path for the sport to go down? Should the sport rely on their drivers' looks and marketability to gain fans instead of pushing innovation and talent? It's a gray area at best. The days of proclaimed playboy Jenson Button prove that looks and talent can be balanced. But BrawnGP wasn't posting Jenson in an ice bath after a tough race. 

If we are exploring the marketability of teams and its pitfalls we have to discuss Haas and Guenther Steiner. Moneygram Haas Formula One was once a pool of potential, the only American team on the grid. Haas could have been the envy of the grid, pride of the American fans. But Haas sits comfortably towards the back of the grid, known for Lego brick cars, the phoenix called Romain Grosjean and their Ex-team principal Guenther Steiner. Driver to Survive captured Guenther as a character in the paddock, with his colourful language and quotable sentences. Newer fans were swayed by his portrayal and then ultimately disappointed when their underdog lost to the dominant Max. 

In the end, none of it matters. The sport is ever evolving and will always be evolving. The beloved Halo, saviour of many, was once seen as a curse. Only time will tell if the ‘fangirlification’ will bring the sport down or uplift it. It's not about the race to create the perfect sport, but more about the history and community built from it.

Yes Max Verstappen may be dominating the grid, but off-grid the real winners are the fans, watching history be made, and even be part of it.

Jimin’s bday WeLive v.2022

As I am listening in the first few minutes, I am having difficulty determining if the background sounds I am hearing are a door opening and closing and perhaps someone moving around in the room or is that his feet and shoes under the table? Like maybe it’s the shuffling sound of his shoes/feet? And he does look off to the side every now and then, sometimes just glancing at nothing? but also a few times actually looks as if his eyes focus on something specific...or not. Maybe not.

You know, I have seen the comments about hearing a certain someone whisper “Jjyaman” during a moment but me, being the skeptical asshole I am, just pooh-poohed that... y’all are reaching! don’t be like them! But now.... (listens very very carefully now). Hmmm. 

Jimin putting up his own printed out birthday decor on the wall and he can’t seem to hang them correctly and me over here with my most basic of basic, like SCREAMING basic knowledge of Hangul can tell right away that he is hanging some of them upside down... Jimin, hun.... you are a born-and-educated-in-Korea, Korean... full bleed as we say here. It’s upside-down, babe. 

Ok, Jimin sucks at handling tape. We know its not his first time too... 

Finally he sees his mistakes and corrects the ones hanging upside-down... goodness. But now I am spurred on to get on with it on my Hangul lessons. FIGHTING! Anyway.

OMG him singing Happy Birthday in English, his pronunciation is immaculate. Him reading some of the comments in English! He understands that Army is majority international and I am grateful to him for making the effort to sharpen his English skills. I will do the same with Korean.

I can also hear traffic in the background... that room must be on the ground floor of the building or close to/facing Hangang-Daero (the main thoroughfare that the HYBE building is on). And it’s midnight there and that traffic still sounds like hell.

Ok, I got to the part where everyone swears it’s JK whispering “JJyaman” but I think it’s just Jimin saying “jyah” just like he did 17 seconds prior, only softer the second time. Yep, that’s me, crusher of delusions. Sorry. 

I love how he’s so confident he can make this LEGO flower in no time and immediately can’t find the correct parts.... hahahahah... and his need to prove he can multitask... so cute of him. Relax, Jimin, it’s a LEGO kit, not a 4-minute high impact complex choreography in which you have to sing and hit the high notes on key. We know you got skillz. You don’t need to impress us with a LEGO kit.

Hahahaha! “You should read the instructions first” he says 30 minutes into it... that’s the left side speaking there... if you know, you know. Also, why does he have to pick the most difficult kits to be his first go at it? He’s such a nerd doing this. And I love him 2000% more for that. Then he realizes it took him 45 minutes to make that one flower hahahahahha! 

Something I noticed...remember in the Las Vegas V Live when Jungkook came in at the end and the pillows fell off the back of the couch and Jimin explained to him they were trying to hide that nude picture on the wall and Jungkook looked up at it and went all smirky “oh... ho ho ho ho” ... Remember that? Jimin has done that exact thing twice in this video. Talk about picking up each other’s mannerisms... classic. 

And I guess time will tell what exactly did he mean by this:

in terms of weirdness, my specialty tends to be in macabre history, so I'll bring the stories about body snatching and that time I almost could have gotten Certified Vintage Victorian Smallpox™️ and you can tell me all about the Kennedy assassinations and true crime cases!! and we can bake treats while we do it!! ☺️☺️ honestly sounds like a dream 🥰

this is also a super random story but it's related to being The Weird Kid and really made me laugh: so at the end of the semester I asked my students what was one thing they learned from the class. it didn't have to be like a dry academic fact or anything, just something super cool or shocking or mind-blowing or whatever - something they would remember after the course ends. and in one of my sections I had one student say "I don't think I can ever forget how you told us that the Victorians ate mummies" and another one who said "pretty sure I'm always going to remember that time when you explained how they buried too many bodies in the cemeteries of Edinburgh and when it rained that one time all the decomposing corpses just floated out into the street." like, I am so incredibly proud that this is my legacy 😂😂

I owe you a massive apology, Charlotte, for taking so long to get to this!! I’ve been sick for the last week and this ask just got buried in my notifications and I didn’t see it until recently. That all being said, you talking about your Lego Titanic reminded me of a little memory I have. When I was thirteen and on a trip to Las Vegas, there was this Titanic exhibit at one of the hotels on the Vegas Strip. They had recreations of various rooms from the ship and even a little section of the ship itself?? I’ll include pictures because I swear, it was one of the coolest experiences ever. It was equal parts euphoric because it was a hyperfixation of mine at the time and I was going into such overload but also kind of haunting because of this one detail.

When you started the experience, they’d give you a ticket with the name and information of some random passenger. You’d get to see details of where on the ship they were staying, who they were traveling with, where they were going and everything. Then by the end of the whole experience, they had these massive walls that had the names of who died and who lived through the sinking. And I remember the card I got was for a woman who was traveling with her father and stayed in the servants quarters. And she didn’t make it.

So being like…thirteen years old. It was this haunting experience sitting there and realizing that I now knew the existence of this woman that may have otherwise been inconsequential if she hadn’t died the way she did.

I’ve had a few different little experiences like that with certain museums and they’re certainly very emotionally heavy, but they’re meaningful to me. They fuel this want in me to be more connected with humanity? Which sounds super alien to say lol. But I just…it blows my mind sometimes knowing that as vast as the human experience is, it’s also so unifying to see how people before us experienced it.

Anyhoo, long ramble aside, UGH, I LOVE THAT STORY ABOUT YOUR STUDENTS. Sometimes I think that’s one of the greatest things about being neurodivergent. Just having the largest mental catalogue of absolutely bonkers information like that that almost no one else knows?? Like that’s how you get people interested in learning lmao.

maybe you've heard of it? i've never had the desire to do a vegas trip but the mountains called and it seemed silly to not stay a few extra days to see what all the fuss is about.

driving by fake new york which looked like it was made of lego.

entering into the hidden depths of meow wolf through the freezer of the convenient store.

there was a mystery to be solved but we didn't follow it that closely.

back to the demented groceries.

a return to pool life after a weekend of hiking in utah.

we saw a lot in a short amount of time during our hours on the strip.

mikey took us to best friend, his favorite restaurant there.

we went out to red rock canyon for a scenic drive but not much hiking because we didn't dress right for the part.

a drive through old vegas on the way to dinner and a museum.

we got tacos at container park, a restaurant/playground/stage/shop space that is made out of old shipping containers.

and a quick loop around the neon museum aka the sign graveyard which was a lot smaller than i imagined.

The 27th DICE Awards Nominees Have Been Revealed, Marvel's Spider-Man 2 Leads The Pack

The 27th D.I.C.E. Awards return next month to Las Vegas, where the industry-only event celebrates the best games and achievements in games of 2023. Unlike The Game Awards, which are hosted and produced by Geoff Keighley, with votes from media outlets and the public in some instances, the D.I.C.E Awards are voted on exclusively by game developers. 

Basically, it’s the awards show where the people who made the games you played last year determine their favorite games of last year. It’s an awards show of The Academy of Interactive Arts & Sciences, with D.I.C.E standing for Design, Innovate, Communicate, and Entertain, and amongst the awards, the academy typically inducts someone into the Academy of Arts & Sciences Hall of Fame – we spoke to Mortal Kombat creator Ed Boon about it in 2022.

Like in previous years, Kinda Funny’s Greg Miller and IGN’s Stella Chung will host the show, which will be livestreamed on Thursday, February 15, 2024.

As you might know, 2023 was a great year for games (but an admittedly terrible one for the people who make them with more than 10,000 laid off in the games industry). Leading the pack of the 27th annual D.I.C.E. Awards is Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, developed by Insomniac Games, with nine nominations. Following it is Remedy Entertainment’s Alan Wake 2, with eight nominations. And behind it is Larian Studios’ Baldur’s Gate 3, with seven nominations.

Suspect Identified in UNLV Mass Shooting, But Police Aren't Releasing His Name Yet

Las Vegas Police swarmed the campus of the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, yesterday afternoon due to an active shooter situation. UNLV blasted alerts for students and staff to shelter in place. Those who could evacuate were advised to do so. In short, the order was to ‘run-fight-hide’ until the situation was resolved. Police eventually contained the shooter, who was later discovered deceased. There were four victims in the mass shooting. Three died, and another was wounded. We don’t know the identity of the shooter, but this individual was reportedly someone who had applied to teach at UNLV

The man suspected of fatally shooting three people and wounding another at a Las Vegas university Wednesday was a professor who unsuccessfully sought a job at the school, a law enforcement official with direct knowledge of the investigation told The Associated Press. The gunman was killed in a shootout with law enforcement, police said. The attack at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas sent shock waves through a city still scarred by the deaths of 60 people in a 2017 mass shooting.  The suspect previously worked at East Carolina University in North Carolina, according to the official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because they weren’t authorized to release the information publicly.  […]  Students and the community were alerted to the emergency by a university post on X that warned: “This is not a test. RUN-HIDE-FIGHT.”

CBS News also reported that the shooter was an instructor, a white male in his 60s. Police won’t release his name until the families of the victims have been notified. Sheriff Kevin McMahill of the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department said this easily could have been a more tragic and deadly attack if not for law enforcement officers responding and engaging the subject:

McMahill said that, during the attack, there was a gathering outside Beam Hall that included people eating and building Lego sets together. He said there could have been many more deaths if responding officers had not "raced to the campus" within minutes and engaged in armed contact.  […]  UNLV will remain closed for the week, and additional determinations will be made about whether it will reopen on Monday, university police chief Adam Garcia said at the evening news conference.

Fall Break trip to Las Vegas!

The idea of us going to Vegas seems odd and ill-fitting, I will admit. We are not Vegas people. But it’s always a good idea to try something different. In the interest of mixing things up, we ran an experiment with this trip, testing how well we could plan a trip last minute (booked just 3 days in advance), how well John could disconnect from work with someone else holding down the fort, and how well we enjoy traveling in big cities rather than our usual nature based destinations. We chose Vegas on a whim and went for it.

The last minute plans worked well, with the exception of the F1 race that closed down some streets and placed giant grandstands in front of most of the strip. Our flights were super short and straightforward, and travels days went incredibly smoothly. John did very well disconnecting from work. As for whether or not we like big cities…mixed bag.

We managed to see a few of the sights on the strip, but the kids got way overstimulated with all the screens, noise, lights and people everywhere. We spent far less time than I had anticipated wandering through.

The hotel pool got a lot of use (I’m so glad we searched hard for a hotel with an outdoor heated pool in the off season!). These kids do love a pool.

Our room on the 27th floor allowed for many opportunities to use the high speed elevator, which both kids loved, as did Turtly (who accidentally came along for a ride with Kira one morning.). I’m pretty sure they both said “wee!” every time we rode the elevator. Fun elevator aside, it turns out we do still prefer Airbnbs to hotel rooms.

We saw three shows during our stay. The performances all featured very loud music (which increased the overwhelm), but they enjoyed the experience nevertheless. Mystere by Cirque du Soliel easily won first place as the favorite. Blue Man Group took a solid second place, and David Copperfield slid low into third place.

On the last day we left the strip and visited Container Park, a spot downtown where shipping containers have been made into several restaurants with lovely terraces and a huge playground for kids in the middle. The lawn area with extra large legos and a huge checker set kept the kids entertained for hours. They really appreciated the time running around with other kids after all the stimulation. The impromptu dance party and animatronic praying mantis that danced along to music and shot flames from its antenna were icing on the cake.

As the F1 race training began on our last night we ended up having a pretty great view from our hotel room. We could watch the cars zip by, sparks and all. Of course it was a bit loud also…

This trip confirmed our preferences for nature, outdoor play and Airbnbs, and also made it clear that our family isn’t ready to explore bigger cities yet (Paris and Tokyo will have to wait.). Valuable intel. Plus we made some memories and had some fun too - all without any gambling. 😉
