Novelty Melon Season

Hurry - before the season ends...novelty melon season that is.  They are those unusual melons snuggled in next to the cantaloupes and honeydew but are neither.  Locally for me, they are at the corner fruit stand and at my local grocers.  But how to choose one...hmmmm.  Give it a sniff - if it smells sweet/perfumey then it’s ready.  Just slice it open, scoop out the seeds, serve it halved or sliced into wedges or cut away from the rind in cubes which is how I serve it so you can have just one bite to top off dinner or tuck in at breakfast for a sweet, juicy morning treat.  See what you think...

Tonights special was a bust... But a chef never gives up and still pours their heart and soul into their art. Alaskan sockey salmon sashimi over a mound of brussel sprouts that were sautéed in compound butter, paired with parsnip puree with sweet baby peppers and a Kandy lemondrop melon chutney with a hint of mint and ginger i think tied this ridiculous and elaborate display together. #cheflife #foodporn #sashimi #brusselsprouts #parsnip #kandy #lemondropmelon #mint #sushi

So this is a lemon drop melon. Wtf is that, you ask? That’s what I wanted to know when I saw it in @tonysmarket . It’s about the size of a cantaloupe with a really beautiful skin. Inside, it looks like extremely juicy honeydew. . The taste is peculiar. Nothing like the crisp honeydew, far from the sweet cantaloupe, it’s as if a honeydew said, “How YOU doin?” to an ordinary lemon, took her to bed immediately, and produced a child that is in almost every way honeydew but for the blue eyes and the weird feet. A tinge of something citrus, but there’s no doubt who it should call daddy. .
