I find the most interesting difference between Shen Jiu and Shen Yuan isn't "malice" and "kindness" but rather Shen Jiu being a desperate-to-survive sore loser and Shen Yuan being an uncompetitive good sport, and it's interesting to see how their differences kind of flow from those two opposing traits
Both are desperate to survive in their own ways, however I guess you could argue Shen Jiu did everything to secure the life he wanted, meanwhile Shen Yuan idled and idled until fire was put under his ass and he finally had to do something to secure better living standards for himself
You could argue Shen Jiu has a stronger will to survive, but even being alive he didn't seem to enjoy it and be happy all that much. Meanwhile Shen Yuan strives for very little but generally is happy with the bare necessities and choosing to just loudly inflate his complaints about little things instead, which probably endears him to the people around him

Hi! What are your thoughts on Paul's relationship Jane Asher? It seems very not affectionate, and even that Paul didn't care about it at all, Jane a little bit more than him but also not really? So a PR relationship? But if yes, why? It's pretty bizarre to me when I look at it . What do you think?
Hi anon!,
I think there’s a bit of a misconception about their relationship that lingers because neither of them have talked about it and it ended terribly (iconic break-up though Jane just amazing). Linda's illness meant that Jane was also airbrushed from MYFN out of respect for her (Peter Cox keeping a copy of Jane's cookbook to pull out and set Linda off about her own autobiography is both worrying and hilarious). All of that makes it seem like she was a blip.
The reality was that Paul and Jane were sweethearts who were deeply loving and affectionate. There's been a lot of really good compilation of quotes and lovely images which I'll link here and here. In short though, Paul lived with the Asher's for years, took time to spend on just her, alludes to missing her on Sgt Pepper and were remarked on as being a lovely couple by people like Ray Connolly, Cynthia and Patrick Stewart weirdly. I can't remember where I saw it but there was this article after Paul was with Linda where he's says something like 'Jane and I are still in love with each other like you are with exes but hey ho!' (I remember it clearly because it was a huge WHAT moment, please if anyone has it I'd be so grateful.) When they split Paul spent weeks crying on Alistair Taylor's shoulder about how he'd lost his 'closest friend', the one he told everything to and he could be himself around. Jane loved him for him and showed him a whole new world and scene. She was a huge part of his life, to the point he dedicated part of 'Eye of the Storm' decades later to her.
So if they were this big love story, why did they split? Well aside from the tinnnyy little cheating issue, they just weren't suited at that life-stage. They met when she was 17 and he'd just turned 21 and broke up when she was 22 and he was 26. People change a lot as they get older and suddenly life plans get in the way. Jane didn’t want children then and wanted her own career whilst Paul is one of the most instinctively paternal, baby-crazy men I’ve ever heard of and had at the time a view of a ‘traditional’ wife that stayed at home with the children. Those two alone are deal-breakers for any relationship. In the Hunter Davies bio it seems they are trying to work the career thing out but there is no way on gods green earth that Paul would give up on the prospect of children.
Then there were the other problems. According to Ray Connolly, Jane didn't like Paul’s drug taking, the affairs, his preoccupation with the Beatles and that he seemed closer to John than her and prioritised their relationship over her (💀). Jane quite fairly wanted to be number one and Paul did try to prioritise her with weeks alone after India in Scotland. However at the end of the day Paul was too enmeshed with the Beatles and especially John to give her that starring position.
So yeah, Jane played a really important part in Paul's life in the 60s, they had a deep and cherished relationship but ultimately they wanted different things and really no one could come between Paul and John ... except themselves.
(Also ngl if you wrote 'we can work it out' about me I would have throttled you Jane has some patience goood god.)

Blue: A Retelling of "The Blue Castle" by M.J. Rednow
Valancy is not a rebel. Every moment of her day is controlled by the artificial intelligence that monitors her movements, but she doesn't dare to resist strict rules of Stirling Society. Any who object are cast out of their safe city and banished to the toxic, dangerous Wilderness. Yet Valancy dreams of freedom, inspired by the secretly subversive writings of John Foster. His supposedly scientific texts speak of the beauty of nature and spark thoughts of society beyond Stirling control--yet, for Valancy, these can be nothing more than dreams. Then the infallible AI medical doctor informs Valancy that she has less than a year to live. Valancy realizes that she doesn't want to die never having lived, and she begins to push back against the restrictions of her life. She speaks out against the pointless rules, helps an invalid deemed useless to society, and is eventually cast out into the Wilderness, where she marries a mysterious outcast who teaches her to brave the wonders and terrors of nature--and maybe, to bring down the Stirling society once and for all.

vomits. hang on let me try to get all my repeated thoughts out at once. first time actually speaking to each other in the present day in the entirety of the series and it took 92 chapters. i used to say this was matoba with a look of instinctual hatred which i no longer think but i do love that its an instinctual Reaction that he has to tamp down and that is given beautiful large-real-estate-on-the-page focus and a mirror in natori's.
natori terrified bc he hasnt been around for any of the matoba-natsume interactions that have mostly defanged matoba. but he is the trespasser in this arc so he has to play nice around his ex down the street from their emotionally significant loquat memory he was already thinking about while he panics about his ex trying to kill his teen best friend. and then he [horny redacted] well we'll get to that liveblogging later.
um um what else. they look beautiful here. im gonna throw up.

If they can’t afford CGI tears how are they gonna afford CGI WOLVES 😭 I hope they just hire some big wolf-dogs or something I don’t want bad CGI wolves
I actually had a delightful anon a little while ago who spent some time on the True Blood set and suggested IWTV might use wolf-dogs, which gives me a lot of hope, anon, haha.
I will say though too that I think there are probably better prototypes for wolves that exist for VFX artists to work with than there are for blood tears, so while I do think we're at risk when it comes to bad CGI wolves, I think the blood tear budget isn't necessarily an indication of potential wolf-quality, haha.

✦ 𝐁𝐋𝐀𝐂𝐊𝐒𝐌𝐈𝐓𝐇 '𝐅𝐈𝐋𝐋𝐄𝐑' 𝐀𝐑𝐂 ✧
Supply run reflection & post-Epiphany development? A little bit.
"Don't throw that away."
Spelling momentary inaction in a scene of fire and clangor, sizzling swirls of steam and smoke kissed the ceiling on now fading tufts. Silence settled like sediment as a pale hand halted with its owner's puzzled response, a lick of irritation if one should look closely. Belonging to a figure of obvious distaste against sudden and unreasonable commands; a quirk of one especially strong will.
Still Rafal did as he were told and placed down the ruined blade. "—Why? This sword is misshapen with unseemly dents. It is beyond salvaging."
"Says who?"
The Faerghian blacksmith came over. Far younger than Rafal but wizened by the sheer concentration of years spent in his craft. Even far worldlier than a Fell Dragon in some ways, he shook his head with a chuckle as if long waiting to deliver his wisdom.
"In our field of work, there's a saying: there exist no mistakes."
". . .Explain."
The man's finger ran affectionately down pitted metal. So gentle and forgiving and incomprehensible an act that the dragon's lips twisted with an unconscious frown. Disturbed at how a failure might ever be welcomed.
"Cut lumber too short and it will never grow back. Break yarn too short and you'll need to make more. But bend metal out of shape, and it can be fixed. Just subject it to heat and a botched piece can begin anew. If you grasp how metal works and can be recycled, then this next saying is simple to understand."
He looked up at Rafal, homely and unremarkable, soot-stained and nothing special save that he was just a little kind. Still his words gave the dragon pause.
"There are always second chances. In metal, and in men."
...
Second chances in metal and men.
Where such a saying had ignited something of recognition behind conflicted crimson eyes, it was seed also to a natural and blooming question. One eldritch consideration that feared of all things to be a garden better realized.
"What of dragons?"
"—What was that, lad?"
Concentration shattered on a thoughtless and questioning look from one stranger to another. This was not the same blacksmith nor an identical circumstance; unlike the trip with Altena, Rafal had come here alone; the location a castle-town, not a city.
Silvery white head shook, parting with old and acquainting with new, making room for all in-between. "Nothing of import."
And not what he had come to discuss.
"Have you need for paid hands? I am new to the forge, but not a stranger, and. . .I am seeking for money."

You know that book moment where everything is resolved but there's 100 pages left? Or the opposite, where everything is going wrong but there's 20 pages left?
Yeah those suck don't they? Try reading The Selection trilogy and having those exact scenarios in 2 books back to back
I cannot fathom into words the stress I was under while reading The Elite and The One...
